Why did an ardent anti-communist decide he needed visit a hardline communist country? He felt the US and his administration needed a foreign policy win.

Richard Nixon is famous for a lot of things, but his visit to China is definitely one of his most important, because it altered the trajectory of relations between the US and China for the next 50 years. The story of his visit was not a straightforward one. It required some backdoor channels and a secret visit under the auspices of food poisoning in order to make the necessary arrangements. Listen as we detail the visit and the events surrounding it, and discuss whether or not Nixon and his administration were doing the right thing.

The Cultural Revolution, Part 1

The Cultural Revolution, Part 1

The most transformative and significant event in modern Chinese history was the Cultural Revolution. Imagine chaos, betrayal, and epic power struggle on a scale that makes Game of Thrones look like an episode of Barney and Friends.

After Mao lost face from the debacle of the Great Leap Forward, he unleashed the most radical communists in China in order to secure power back from the moderates. The deets are in the episode, but long story short, millions died and Chinese society has never been the same. This week we take you from the beginning in 1966 to around 1968, the bloodiest phase of the Revolution. Next week we’ll bring in Nixon and Kissinger talk about how the US bumbled its way into this one.

The Precursor to Revolution

The Precursor to Revolution

How do you ignite the fire of Revolution? First you must lay the kindling.

After the Great Leap Forward the Chinese economy was in shambles, corruption was rampant and dissent was spreading in the ranks, the CCP needed to act in order to re-invigorate the socialist revolution. Liu Shaoqi was the Vice Chairman of the CCP and the heir apparent to Mao, he took to rebuilding the Chinese economy and then implemented campaigns called the "Socialist Education Movement". These movements were based on "The Four Cleanups" to rebuild the CCP's own party. Even though Mao had taken a step back from the administrative decisions he watched closely to determine the success of these campaigns and regained his own internal political power.

But what did these campaigns look like? And where they successful? Join us as we discuss the precursor to the Cultural Revolution.

China in the Vietnam War and a Border War with the Soviet Union S5 ep15

China in the Vietnam War and a Border War with the Soviet Union S5 ep15

After the failure of the Great Leap forward, Mao needed to divert attention from his internal failings to external threats. So, what did Mao do? Well, he pretty much ticked every one of his neighbors off and very nearly got into a nuclear war.

The 60's were a period of geo-political conflict for the Chinese, they had a border war with India, had relations with Vietnam rapidly deteriorate and nearly get into a nuclear conflict with the USSR. On this week's episode we discuss these events, why they occurred and how they ended up forcing China to make a sharp diplomatic pivot to a more Pro-US stance.

China’s Great Leap Forward S5 ep14

China’s Great Leap Forward S5 ep14

Did you know that as early as 1950 a rift began to form between the CCP and USSR? And that rift continued to grow while Khrushchev led the USSR, never to be mended.
What did this have to do with Chinese and US relations and how did this set up one of the most devasting famines in human history? In 1956 Khrushchev delivered his "Secret Speech", in it he railed against Stalin and his policies. Mao took this speech as a direct attack on him and the cult of personality that surrounded him. Tensions eroded and Mao was determined to pass the USSR in production, thus the PRC initiated its "Great Leap Forward" to rapidly industrialize and pass the UK (also the USSR). In this Episode we will dive into the causes of the Sino-Soviet split and the root of Mao's distrust of the USSR. We will also examine why the Great Leap forward was such an abysmal disaster that led to the death of Millions and very nearly cost Mao his position as leader of the CCP.

S5 ep13 Crises in the Taiwan Strait

S5 ep13 Crises in the Taiwan Strait

Did you know the Cuban Missile Crisis wasn't the only time the US was on the verge of Nuclear War? In 1954 the US came very close to using tactical nuclear weapons to fight the People's Republic of China.

Shortly after the Korean War ended, the PRC attempted to invade the island of Formosa now known as Taiwan. The remnants of the KMT had fled to Taiwan at the end of the Chinese Civil War, and the PRC wanted to re-unify China. In 1954, the US sent the 7th fleet due to fears of a "Domino Effect" and to enforce its policy of containment.  Because of these actions, the US successfully prevented the PRC from invading Taiwan. This was one of two crises that occurred in the strait that nearly saw the use of nuclear warheads and a conflict with China.

This week J and Collin discuss the significance of these events and why it is relevant to US and Chinese relations today.

S5 Ep12 US and Chinese Relations Through the Korean War

S5 Ep12 US and Chinese Relations Through the Korean War

After the US and Allies defeated Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan in World War II, only one enemy remained, commies. From 1945 to 1950 the western and communist worlds became increasingly hostile to one another, until Communist North Korea and Kim Il Sung launched a surprise attack on South Korea and drug both the United States and Communist China into war.

This week we continue our series on Chinese and US relations by looking at the Korean War, examining the US policy of containment, and analyzing if it was successful. We also ask questions like, why didn’t the United States better prepare for the Chinese entry into the war, and what lessons did Mao and the Communist Chinese Party take away from fighting a war with the US?

S5 Ep 11 The "Loss of China" Debate and How Americans Viewed the Communist Takeover of China

S5 Ep 11 The "Loss of China" Debate and How Americans Viewed the Communist Takeover of China

After Mao proclaimed the People's Republic of China in 1949 Republicans and Democrats immediately began pointing a finger at one another. The debate that ensued is known as the "Loss of China", with Republicans like Senator Joe McCarthy and later General Douglas MacArthur blaming the Truman Administration for losing China to the Communists, but Democrats like Dean Acheson and Truman blamed it on the incompetence of Chaing Kai-Shek and the Kuomintang. Still others, like Chinese scholars more recently, claim that America never lost China because it never had it in the first place, and that the Chinese people wanted communism.

This week we break down this debate and examine it from its many sides. How could the United States prevented the Chinese Communist Party from winning the Chinese Civil War? Had communist spies infiltrated the US government and tipped the balance in Mao Zedong's favor? What role did the Soviet Union play? Was Senator Joseph McCarthy right in claiming that insidious forces were at work? Listen to this episode and find out.

S5 Ep 10 Comparing 2nd Sino-Japanese War to Russia/Ukraine and More

S5 Ep 10 Comparing 2nd Sino-Japanese War to Russia/Ukraine and More

Japan invaded China in 1937 due to the belief that the benefits of escalation, war, and further expansion in China outweighed the consequences that could be levied by the Chinese and international community. Likewise, Russia escalated its war in Ukraine in 2022 due to its belief that it could weather economic sanctions and diplomatic isolation placed on it by Europe and the US. In both situations, Japan and Russia correctly assumed that foreign military intervention would not happen, and therefore placed their nations on the path of war.

This week we continue looking at the 2nd Sino-Japanese War (1937-1945), how it impacted WWII, and what the implications are for today. We also discuss the question of 'Who deserves credit for winning WWII?' by looking at the historical lack of emphasis placed on Chinese and Russian contributions. We hope this episode leaves you with a better understanding of how China and the US view WWII and the lessons learned from it.

S5 Ep 9 2nd Sino-Japanese War: Japan Attacks America Because of China

S5 Ep 9 2nd Sino-Japanese War: Japan Attacks America Because of China

Did you know that Japan attacked Pearl Harbor in WWII because of America's China policy?

This week we discuss the beginning of the 2nd Sino-Japanese War and how it relates to the story of US-Chinese relations. Prior to 1937 the Open Door Policy was just a statement of intentions, but President Franklin Delano Roosevelt took it to the next level after Japan attacked China after the Marco Polo Bridge Incident. From 1937 to 1941 the US continued to sanction Japan, trying to pressure them to withdraw their military from China, until FDR signed an executive order that froze all Japanese assets in the US, preventing Japan from buying US oil and threatening to grind their war machine in China to a halt. Admiral Yamamoto knew that the only way Japan had a hope of victory was to wipe out the American Pacific Fleet out at Pearl Harbor.

As always, there's also some interesting anecdotes about why no war ends quickly, how history can be used to prevent future wars, and why the Rape of Nanking is still a touchy subject today.

The Chinese Civil War: Shanghai Massacre to the Long March

You may have heard about the Chinese Civil War, but do you know why it happened and its historical context? Continuing our series on US-Chinese relations, this week we tell the story of the Chinese Civil War between the Kuomintang and the Communists, but we also discuss how foreign actors, primarily the Soviets and Japanese, tried to influence each side. The Chinese Civil War is to China what the American Revolution is to the United States, so if you want to understand China you have to know about the key event that brought Mao Zedong to power and set the stage for WWII.

S5 Ep 6 The Rise of Mao and Chang: The Warlord Era

S5 Ep 6 The Rise of Mao and Chang: The Warlord Era

Why did the US not support democratic leaders in China after the fall of the Qing?

When the last Qing Emperor Pu Yi abdicated in 1912, strongman Yuan Shi-Kai became military dictator in Beijing, but after his death in 1916 the country fractured under his successor generals, similar to Alexander the Great. This began the Warlord Era of modern China, and in this episode we talk about how the US largely stayed out of the internal Chinese conflict, choosing to focus more on the conflagration engulfing Europe (WWI) and managing the rise of Imperial Japan. Did the US miss a key opportunity to prevent the Communists to coming to power? Or was the US longstanding policy of isolationism to blame?

Sun Yat-Sen is claimed by both Taiwan and Communist China as the Father of the Nation and the First Revolutionary. His persistent scheming and leadership played a major role in overthrowing the Qing Dynasty and establishing a parliamentary republic in 1911.

This week we discuss how Sun was influenced by the United States by telling the story of his conversion to Christianity, how he ironically became a US citizen, and more. S5 Ep 3 Besieged in Beijing: The Boxer Rebellion, the Qing, and the 8 Nations that Fought Them

Wanna know how the last Chinese imperial dynasty fell?

Continuing our series on the history of US and Chinese Relations, this week we cover the Boxer Rebellion and how it contributed to the fall of the Qing Dynasty. In the last decade of Qing rule, Western powers plus Japan had carved up China into ‘spheres of influence’, except for the United States. With the growth of foreign influence, the Chinese people began to push back. Once such group, known by westerners as the Boxers, began to burn churches and murder Chinese converts. Things came to a head when the Boxers attacked the foreign embassies in Beijing. Unfortunately for them, they decided to mess around and found out that the US legation was defended by the US Marines…

S5 Ep 2. God & Rebellion: American Influence and the Fall of the Qing Dynasty

S5 Ep 2. God & Rebellion: American Influence and the Fall of the Qing Dynasty

China and the US began their official relationship on `bad terms with the "Unequal Treaties", and things only got worse from then on. Many Chinese look back on these decades as the beginning of a spiritual and cultural conflict between the Chinese and Americans, while many Americans simply viewed it as a business transaction.

Once the U.S gained official access to China, missionaries penetrated deep into the heartland of China along with American officials, from there they began to have an influence on the people of China. This influence was often good and gave rise to universal education and tried to end practices like foot binding, but this influence eroded the power of the Qing. With an impotent Qing dynasty, already festering ethnic conflict, plus underlying class conflict, the country was ripe for a rebellion. That rebellion was the Taiping Rebellion, which led to the death of 20 million Chinese people. So was the U.S really responsible? What was the impact of such a catastrophic event? And were Chinese immigrants given the same respect that Americans expected of the Chinese when they were in China? All of these questions will be answered on our latest episode.

S5 Ep 1. How the Opium Wars began US and Qing Dynasty Relations

S5 Ep 1. How the Opium Wars began US and Qing Dynasty Relations

China and the US have a complicated history as it relates to one another, and that relationship has felt significant strain over the past few years with COVID, contentious trade negotiations and now economic concerns. This leaves the question; how did these countries get here?

To answer that we will need to go back about 183 years to the Opium Wars and the beginning of the "100 years of Humiliation".  In 1839 Western powers needed a means to gain an advantage in trade over the Qing Dynasty, and opium was that advantage. The Qing resisted the Opium trade from the British initially and even confiscated, and destroyed much of the British supply, but the British retaliated. The British crushed the Qing in a series of battles and began "trading" opium to the Chinese. The British and other western powers began negotiating what the Chinese referred to as "Unequal Treaties" that gave the western powers (Great Britan, France, Portugal, Germany etc) highly favorable terms, special privileges and the ability to annex land along the coast of mainland China. The US under the Tyler administration didn't want to be left out and gained their own trade agreement. Though the Americans did not coerce the Qing into this agreement like the other western countries, the Chinese perception of the US was still negative. This humiliating experience would define Chinese motivation and actions for the next 183 years.

If you want to understand China and its policies regarding the US you have to go back to the beginning....

S4 Ep 9 Is America Capitalist or Socialist?

S4 Ep 9 Is America Capitalist or Socialist?

Let’s be honest, politicians make up economic policy as they go along. And this is especially the case in the United States. With the final episode in our series on Capitalism and Socialism in America, we discuss the economics of the 1990s, through the Great Recession, and end with some observations on the nature of Capitalism and Socialism and which is better for the economy. See, the truth is, America is technically capitalist, but we’ve got more socialist in our system than Elizabeth Warren has Native American in hers. Thanks to John Maynard Keynes and FDR, we’re all a little socialist now…

S4 Ep 8 Gold, Oil and Supply Side Economics

S4 Ep 8 Gold, Oil and Supply Side Economics

After the Second World War, the American dream was alive and well. People had jobs, money and were living in a golden age of the economy, what could go wrong?

Well, a lot actually, increases in government spending, leaving the gold standard and two major energy crises in the 70s led to economic stalemate. This slowdown in growth combined with high interest rates and high inflation led to what we call "stagflation". So President Reagan worked with the chairman of the Federal Reserve Paul Volker to kick start the American economy, listen to this weeks episode to see if they were successful..

S4 Ep 7 Did the New Deal Work?

S4 Ep 7 Did the New Deal Work?

You were probably taught in your high school history class that President Roosevelt’s ‘New Deal’ is what got us out of the Great Depression. We have some news for you. Not only did the New Deal not get us out of the Great Depression, but it also probably made things worse.

This week on The Loins of History we talk about the impacts of the New Deal and World War II on the American economy, for weal and for woe. Even though these events were nearly 100 years ago, they have far ranging impacts on economic policy and were key events for how Democrats and Republicans interpret the economy today.

If you want to understand American economics, you’ll need to know its history.

S4 Ep 6 When The Medicine Is Worse Than The Disease, Are We Headed for Another Great Depression?

S4 Ep 6 When The Medicine Is Worse Than The Disease, Are We Headed for Another Great Depression?

Economic downturns suck, but they suck even more if economists and policymakers draw the wrong conclusions from them.

Continuing our series on a history of capitalism and socialism in America, this week we focus on the Great Depression. We discuss what happened, and compare the two main schools of thought on why it happened. Chances are you were taught that the stock market collapse caused massive unemployment for almost 10 years. But what if we told you that unemployment didn’t hit double digits until 4 years AFTER the stock market collapse? What if the government response to the collapse was worse than the collapse itself? Sound familiar? That’s right. Looking at you post-COVID Fed…Listen in to find out how today came from The Loins of History.

S4 Ep 5 The Woman Who Brought Down America’s Largest Business Empire

S4 Ep 5 The Woman Who Brought Down America’s Largest Business Empire

Before investigative journalism was cool, Ida Tarbell had a score to settle. Standard Oil, arguably the largest monopoly in American history, had shut down many local businesses as it expanded its ever growing corporate web. In 1904 she published The History of the Standard Oil Company, which payed a key role in hastening that company’s demise.

This week we continue our series on the history of Capitalism and Socialism in America by looking at Teddy Roosevelt and the rise of “trust busting” or government intervention in the splitting of monopolies. We explore the ethical, economic, and political implications of forcibly disbanding profitable businesses, while discussing how this informs our view on companies like Meta and Apple.
