Master of None: 3 Truths You Need to Hear to Embrace the Teaching Journey

Master of None: 3 Truths You Need to Hear to Embrace the Teaching Journey

Welcome to today's episode on Master of None: 3 Truths You Need to Hear to Embrace the Teaching Journey.

Have you found yourself going down the “if only” path lately? “If only my students and colleagues respected my expertise and ideas more, then I would feel so much better about my job!” “If only this was more fun, then I could enjoy what I am doing more.” “If only my school would do this, this, and that, then it would be so much better.” “If only we did it here more like they do over there, then we wouldn’t be in this mess!”

We are right there with you. We have definitely been going down that “if only” path. “If only our teachers saw how much is happening behind the scenes, then they wouldn’t have so many worries!” “If only everyone brought some more joy, then we could make the most of this reality.” “If only our district would do this, this, and that, then it would be so much better.” You are not alone with these “if only” thoughts. Today, we will be talking about the 3 Truths You Need to Hear to Embrace the Teaching Journey.

Depending on where you are at right now at this moment, these truths might seem a little too truth-y. We are doing that on purpose. Today is all about hearing the truths that we actually need to hear not the ones we might want to hear.

Get a Life: 4 Opportunities to Expand Beyond Being "Just a Teacher"

Get a Life: 4 Opportunities to Expand Beyond Being "Just a Teacher"

Welcome to today's episode on Get a Life: 4 Opportunities to Expand Beyond Being "Just a Teacher".

My guess is that over the past year, you have heard the word “resilience” and “resilient”. We're also guessing that you have heard about the importance of being resilient and building resilience in yourself and in your students. And when Iwesay resilience we mean being stronger in the face of adversity, being more determined, courageous, creative, and optimistic. All of which have been super easy this year! (Awkward laugh :) ) Nope. Not at all. Even the thought of resilience can seem impossible.

As hard as it might be to even think about building resilience or being a resilient human being right now, building resilience is actually one of the primary keys to getting a life that expands beyond being “just a teacher.” Today, we are talking about building all forms of resilience - mental, emotional, social, and physical. All of which we need to cultivate not only inside of our school building but also outside in our day-to-day life.

Marigolds, before you convince yourself that it is way too much work to build resilience, don’t worry. We’ve got you. Today, you will hear about how simple it can be to build mental, emotional, social, and physical resilience and how it is scientifically proven that you can do very little and still build tons of resilience.

Be Your Own Coach: 3 Ways to Turnaround Your Mindset and Suffer Less

Be Your Own Coach: 3 Ways to Turnaround Your Mindset and Suffer Less

Welcome to today's episode on Be Your Own Coach: 3 Ways to Turnaround Your Mindset and Suffer Less.

Have you ever thought to yourself, "They (student) just need to try harder! She (parent) needs to be a better parent. He (colleague) isn't doing his job." You know these thoughts aren't doing anyone any good, but you don't know how to get them out of your head.

We get it. All of those shoulds and superlatives can cloud our thinking. We might even do the work of questioning our thoughts and accepting them, but we still feel stuck and don’t know how to turn our mindset around. If you’re also realizing that thought like, “My colleague never listens to me!” is affecting you,  but you don’t know what to do about it, we’ve got you! Today, we have 3 specific ways to turn around your mindset and suffer less.

If you haven't listened to our last episode on the Life-Changing Magic of Questioning Your Thoughts (S2E29), make sure you do that first. This episode can be listened to on its own, but it will be more powerful if built upon the learning and action from last week. We will be sharing, practicing, and giving story-filled examples around the ways we coach ourselves to turn our mindsets around.

The inspiration for this episode comes from Bryon Katie’s process called The Work but again, we will put our Marigold Force twist on things through the lens of educators.

The Life-Changing Magic of Questioning Yourself: The 4 Questions That Forever Changed Our Teaching

The Life-Changing Magic of Questioning Yourself: The 4 Questions That Forever Changed Our Teaching

Welcome to today's episode on The Life-Changing Magic of Questioning Yourself: The 4 Questions That Forever Changed Our Teaching.

Have you ever had thoughts filled with “should”s? “They should be doing their job. My students should just listen the first time. These families should realize that I’m exhausted and that I don’t need to get 100 emails about the same thing!”

What about our superlative thoughts? “ I never can get this done on time. My students never listen to the feedback I give them. My colleagues always are late to our meetings!” You are not alone with these feelings. Today, we will be talking about the magical power of questioning yourself.

The inspiration for this episode comes from Bryon Katie’s process called The Work but as always we will put our Marigold Force twist on things through the lens of educators.

BONUS: Joel and Jessie have created a Free Guide just for you! - 6 Steps To A Killer Workflow. These steps have completely transformed our experience as educators over the years. With this guide, you’ll work through 6 key aspects we’ve identified in our own workflow and what we do to actually feel done working. Yes, it’s possible to feel “done!” (And taking your work home over the weekend is NOT in that guide!)

Beginner's Mind: 4 Simple Approaches to Free Yourself from Impossible Expectations

Beginner's Mind: 4 Simple Approaches to Free Yourself from Impossible Expectations

Welcome to today's episode on Beginner's Mind: 4 Simple Approaches to Free Yourself from Impossible Expectations.

Teachers! Have you ever been stuck in a professional learning or development and told yourself “I already know this! Why am I here? This is not only boring but a waste of my time!” Or what about when an administrator gave you some feedback and you thought to yourself “Okay! Whatever! Next! I am the one who is doing this every day! I am the expert on what I need!”

When those thoughts and feelings come up, that is the perfect moment to practice having a Beginner’s Mind. We will be sharing so many stories of when we did NOT practice Beginner’s Mind and how we had to learn the hard way how to get curious and free ourselves from all the expectations around us and inside of us. Being an expert isn’t a bad thing. But using Beginner’s Mind will help you take one step at a time, let go of prejudgments, and find a sense of inquiry where you welcome and focus the questions not just the answers.

BONUS: Joel and Jessie have created a Free Guide just for you! - 6 Steps To A Killer Workflow. These steps have completely transformed our experience as educators over the years. Embrace the Season: 4 Ways to Actively Accept the Season You Are In

Welcome to today's episode on Embrace the Season: 4 Ways to Actively Accept the Season You Are In.

Have you ever just kept pushing forward no matter what? Maybe you are like us and prefer the warmer seasons of life - literally and metaphorically - so even in the colder and harder months you keep pushing through? We know that sometimes it feels like we are wearing this invisible badge that says “I am a teacher. I can do anything. Watch out!”

We definitely know that feeling of pushing through all the seasons and not taking enough time to adapt, rest and slow down. Today, we will be talking about embracing the season. The beautiful. The hard. The lonely. The stressful. The productive. The peaceful. All of the seasons! The inspiration for this episode comes from Katherine May’s recent book Wintering but as always we will put our Marigold Force twist on things by sharing our stories around accepting life’s seasons and why we had to learn these important lessons.

BONUS: Joel and Jessie have created a Free Guide just for you! - 6 Steps To A Killer Workflow. These steps have completely transformed our experience as educators over the years. This Isn’t Working! 4 Steps To Effectively Advocate For Yourself

Welcome to our episode on This Isn’t Working! 4 Steps To Effectively Advocate For Yourself. We are the Marigold Force.

This. Just. Isn’t. Working. No, today we are not talking about that classic breakup line. We are realizing when in our teaching professions we hit those real moments when we need to name that it’s not working and figure out how to advocate for ourselves.

We will be showing you 4 Steps to Effectively Advocate for Yourself so that you can have radically candid conversations with your colleagues, your administrators, yourself, or really anyone. It’s all about being effective and not getting or staying stuck in the It’s-Not-Working death trot.

Oh, the It’s-Not-Working death trot! We’ve been there. You know the feeling when you’re technically moving, but you know you are going nowhere! Well Marigolds, no more. Let’s get to the podcast and the action!

5 Things Teachers Have Permission For

5 Things Teachers Have Permission For

Welcome to 5 Things Teachers Have Permission For. We are the Marigold Force.

  • I can’t believe you did all that. You’re a superhero!
  • My child is bored. I could definitely do your job better and this wouldn’t happen.
  • Can you talk to my child about cleaning their room today? I tried, but they only listen to you.
  • We appreciate all your hard work to make this crazy first week happen! Can you also draft up an email about all these changes and email all your families in the next hour before you go home for the night?
  • I know you’re teaching math, reading, science, social studies, Pandemic health & safety, and social and emotional skills... but there was a major crisis last night so can you figure out a way to cover this in a way that feels authentic. Also make sure everyone feels safe, heard, seen, but not obligated to share.

How teachers are seen by society can shift in the blink of an eye. We can be viewed as superheroes doing the impossible. Other times we’re viewed as the root cause of all the problems in the world. Many seem to think, we hold all the power and make all the decisions, and when bad things happen it’s on us. In reality, the majority of decisions are thrust upon us with little to no input from teachers, but we’re on the front lines taking the punches for these decisions.

Unfortunately, society’s expectations of us aren’t going away. The same demands will continue to knock at our door- although we would all love a shift in our education system. What we do with those expectations and demands we can control. In this episode, Jessie and Joel compiled a list we all need to hear and come back to again and again. Dear teachers, here are: 5 Things You Have Permission For. Let’s do this!

Teachers, you have permission...

  1. To Not Be Okay
  2. To Make Mistakes
  3. To Not Have All The Answers
  4. To Not Enjoy Teaching
  5. To Have A Life
