S2 Episode 27: Embrace the Season: 4 Ways to Actively Accept the Season You Are In
Welcome to today's episode on Embrace the Season: 4 Ways to Actively Accept the Season You Are In. Have you ever just kept pushing forward no matter what? Maybe you are like us and prefer the warmer seasons of life - literally and metaphorically - so even in the colder and harder months you keep pushing through? We know that sometimes it feels like we are wearing this invisible badge that says “I am a teacher. I can do anything. Watch out!” We definitely know that feeling of pushing through all the seasons and not taking enough time to adapt, rest and slow down. Today, we will be talking about embracing the season. The beautiful. The hard. The lonely. The stressful. The productive. The peaceful. All of the seasons! The inspiration for this episode comes from Katherine May’s recent book Wintering but as always we will put our Marigold Force twist on things by sharing our stories around accepting life’s seasons and why we had to learn these important lessons. BONUS: Joel and Jessie have created a Free Guide just for you! - 6 Steps To A Killer Workflow. These steps have completely transformed our experience as educators over the years. With this guide, you’ll work through 6 key aspects we’ve identified in our own workflow and what we do to actually feel done working. Yes, it’s possible to feel “done!” (And taking your work home over the weekend is NOT in that guide!) Check out the Free Guide in the podcast link below! You’re going to be just fine. All you have to do is keep doing your best. And you’re already doing your best.” Or what about these? “Well, at least we are so lucky to be doing what we are doing. We are doing one of the hardest jobs during one of the hardest times. So lucky!” Or what about these classic phrases? “Just look on the bright side. You’ll get over it. Just think happy thoughts. Well, It could be worse!” Those phrases ring so true for us at the Marigold Force. S2 Episode 23: Stop Reinventing The Wheel: 3 Things You Should Start Copying
Welcome to Stop Reinventing The Wheel: 3 Things You Should Start Copying. We are the Marigold Force. Are you tired of creating all the time? Coming up with systems, engaging lessons, and creative solutions to a zillion different problems is exhausting. We have a little secret for you. It’s OKAY to copy from the greats. There’s a reason we hear the phrase, “don’t reinvent the wheel” all the time. We’re not talking about copying the lesson plans of your colleagues. We’re talking about three areas that will impact your day in an even deeper way - the flow, habits, and mindset of “great teachers.” Having a strong flow, habits, and mindset allows the real magic to happen.  PODCAST: www.themarigoldforce.com/podcast BLOG: www.themarigoldforce.com/blog FACEBOOK: www.facebook.com/themarigoldforce INSTAGRAM: www.instagram.com/themarigoldforce TWITTER: twitter.com/marigoldforce

S2 Episode 22: 3 Boundaries To Protect Your Workflow
Welcome to 3 Boundaries To Protect Your Workflow. We are the Marigold Force. What tends to get in the way of your workflow? As you're moving through your day, what pulls your attention away from whatever you’re working on? Is it your colleagues? Maybe it’s your administration? Could it be yourself? In today’s episode, we’ll be looking at three boundaries through a different lens and proactively tackling some of those distractions.  Self: Stay committed to the schedule you created. We all have tasks we do to avoid work that truly needs to be done. Catch yourself when you feel yourself getting sucked in. Colleagues: How can you avoid scheduling meetings or socializing during those times you have slotted for various things? Leadership: Advocate for your needs when meeting times are being decided. If other tasks are being added to your plate get clarity on what needs to come off. S2 Episode 21: 6 Steps To A Killer Workflow (Pt. 3)
Welcome to 6 Steps To A Killer Workflow - Part 3. We are the Marigold Force. Do you ever fantasize about having a 2-hour long prep every day? Or just one full day without students or meetings to get caught up on your giant to-do list? Well, we don’t have a magic wand that can grant more time in the day, but we do have a framework for creating a workflow that may help you feel “done.”  We have been crafting and refining our own workflows for years. Our goal has always been to fill our day with the most important things and drop all the unnecessary baggage. Today we’re working through the final two steps.  If you’re joining us for the first time, you’ll want to go back to part one in S2E19. Remember, this isn’t a quick fix or something that will completely transform your teaching experience tomorrow. With all Marigold Force frameworks and strategies - the intentional effort is necessary. We will break it down into extremely manageable pieces and give lots of examples. However, the action steps are on you. You’ll only get out what you put in. Let’s jump into Steps 5 and 6 - batching your tasks (with templates when necessary!) and reflecting/refining as you go. Welcome to 6 Steps To A Killer Workflow - Part 2. We are the Marigold Force. Teachers- Do you wish you could feel “done” working for the day? With all Marigold Force frameworks and strategies - the intentional effort is necessary. We will break it down into extremely manageable pieces, but you need to put in the work. S2 Episode 18: 5 Things Teachers Have Permission For
Welcome to 5 Things Teachers Have Permission For. We are the Marigold Force. I can’t believe you did all that. You’re a superhero! My child is bored. I could definitely do your job better and this wouldn’t happen. Can you talk to my child about cleaning their room today? I tried, but they only listen to you. We appreciate all your hard work to make this crazy first week happen! Can you also draft up an email about all these changes and email all your families in the next hour before you go home for the night? I know you’re teaching math, reading, science, social studies, Pandemic health & safety, and social and emotional skills... but there was a major crisis last night so can you figure out a way to cover this in a way that feels authentic. Also make sure everyone feels safe, heard, seen, but not obligated to share. How teachers are seen by society can shift in the blink of an eye. We can be viewed as superheroes doing the impossible. Other times we’re viewed as the root cause of all the problems in the world. Many seem to think, we hold all the power and make all the decisions, and when bad things happen it’s on us. In reality, the majority of decisions are thrust upon us with little to no input from teachers, but we’re on the front lines taking the punches for these decisions. Unfortunately, society’s expectations of us aren’t going away. The same demands will continue to knock at our door- although we would all love a shift in our education system. What we do with those expectations and demands we can control. In this episode, Jessie and Joel compiled a list we all need to hear and come back to again and again. Dear teachers, here are: 5 Things You Have Permission For. Let’s do this! Teachers, you have permission... S2 Episode 3: Create a Curiosity Board
Welcome to Reclaiming Your Curiosity - Part 3. This is the third episode of our second season! We are the Marigold Force. Often, people - especially Changemakers like you, me, and our Marigolds - feel stressed about finding their passion, and when they can’t unlock it, it causes tons of anxiety. Elizabeth Gilbert changed her stance on the whole "Find your passion!" narrative. Instead, she now says:  "Stop trying to follow your passion. Instead, explore your curiosity." In this episode, we will take the time to explore our curiosities with what is going on around us and why that might be. We will ask the simple question: If you had zero preparation for a 30-minute assessment in which all you had to do was talk about one topic, what topic would you choose? Our bonus strategy this week is to create a Curiosity Board. (Like a vision board but better!)  Make sure to click the podcast link below to get all the links to what we talked about in this episode - including Jessie and Joel's Curiosity Boards! Riff 1: Stop Comparing Yourself to Others!
Enjoy a brief "riff episode" from Jessie on the detriment of comparing yourself to others. Yup, we hear this all the time, but here's another example that is true to Jessie on the regular. Welcome to our seventh bonus episode of the summer on one of our Marigold Force Essentials: The Four Questions & The Turnaround How do you do the Four Questions & the Turnaround? You write down your stressful thoughts, and then ask yourself the following four questions: Question 1: Is it true? Question 2: Can you absolutely know it's true? Question 3: How do you react—what happens—when you believe that thought? Question 4: Who would you be without the thought? And then finally, Turn the thought around: The "turnaround" gives you an opportunity to experience the opposite of what you believe. Once you have found one or more turnarounds to your original statement, you are invited to find at least three specific, genuine examples of how each turnaround is true in your life. Who is our special guest?  Tom Parks! Tom Parks is an incredible husband, father, son, advocate, listener, and human being who lives in Minneapolis. Summer Bonus 5: The Four Questions & The Turnaround | Quick Dive
Welcome to our fifth bonus episode of the summer on one of our Marigold Force Essentials: The Four Questions & The Turnaround At the Marigold Force, we always come back to Byron Katie's Four Questions & The Turnaround. We believe that you can’t be a strong, vital Marigold, educator, or human being without doing the work of inquiry. Byron Katie puts it like this: “All the suffering that goes on inside our minds is not reality, It's just a story we torture ourselves with.” How do you do the Four Questions & the Turnaround? You write down your stressful thoughts, and then ask yourself the following four questions: Question 1: Is it true? Question 2: Can you absolutely know it's true? Question 3: How do you react—what happens—when you believe that thought? Question 4: Who would you be without the thought? Question 5: How can you turn that thought around? It means putting yourself first so that you can show up fully for yourself and others. You cannot pour from an empty cup! Clear & Healthy Boundaries help keep your cup full! Who is our special guest? Daniel Loudenback! Daniel is a good friend of Jessie's husband, Ross, and she's been so lucky to get to know him even better over the last few years. Summer Bonus 3: Clear & Healthy Boundaries | Quick Dive
Welcome to our third bonus episode of the summer on one of our Marigold Force Essentials: Clear & Healthy Boundaries. At the Marigold Force, we always come back to Boundaries. We believe that you can’t be a strong, vital Marigold, educator, or human being without super resilient boundaries. It means putting yourself first so that you can show up fully for yourself and others. You cannot pour from an empty cup! Clear & Healthy Boundaries help keep your cup full! The basic definition of a boundary that we always come back to is: Here is what I can do. Here is what I can’t do. You want to start with that easy-to-remember phrase of “Here’s what I can do” and “Here’s what I can’t do” AND you also want to connect it to your personal why. You always want to know your personal why. It is impossible to communicate your boundaries unless you understand why you need them. Summer Bonus 2: Urgent & Important Matrix | Deep Dive with Kaitlyn Wahldick
Welcome to our second bonus episode of the summer on one of our Marigold Force Essentials: the Urgent & Important Matrix. The Urgent & Important Matrix is a simple but effective tool for prioritizing your to-do list based on the level of urgency and importance of each task. Today, we will get specific around the four quadrants - the four sections - of the Urgent & Important Matrix. We will share what our matrices look like. And we will even have a bonus guest on this episode a little later to see what is on their Urgent & Important Matrix - and listen to how this matrix is impacting their life. Who is our special guest? Kaitlyn Wahldick! Kaitlyn is a good friend of Jessie from college. They met more than a decade ago and bonded quickly over their love for travel, biking, and exploring Minneapolis. Kaitlyn loves traveling and exploring especially if it takes her off the beaten touristic path. As a self-proclaimed self-development junkie, you can't get her to stop talking about personality types, the latest non-fiction book she's reading, and spirituality. She also loves bringing people together and is an exceptional hostess. Kaitlyn is currently working at Target as a digital designer and living in Minneapolis with her 2-year-old pup, Bowie. Summer Bonus 1: Urgent & Important Matrix | Quick Dive
Welcome to our first bonus episode of the summer on one of our Marigold Force Essentials: the Urgent & Important Matrix.  The Urgent & Important Matrix is a simple but effective tool for prioritizing your to-do list based on the level of urgency and importance of each task. It’s sometimes referred to as the ‘Eisenhower Matrix’ or ‘Eisenhower Decision Matrix’ and is one of the easiest time management strategies to implement.  An Urgent & Important Analysis helps you to rapidly identify the activities that you should focus on, along with the ones you should ignore. It challenges the role of habitual activities and allows you to regain control of your environment and external demands, rather than allow them to control you. By filtering out “busy” activities that provide minimal value to long term goals, you free up time for things that matter. Preview of the Marigold Force Podcast!
Get ready, Marigolds! We will see you on Sunday, March 1st, with our first episode! Welcome to the Marigold Force Podcast Preview episode! Inspired by Jennifer Gonzalez, we believe that everyone - especially teachers - needs to find their Marigolds. "If you can find at least one marigold in your school and stay close to them, you will grow. Find more than one and you will positively thrive." Hence, we created the Marigold Force as a rebel hybrid community that brings changemaking educators together - in person and now in this podcast - to share fresh perspectives, make true personal and professional change, and have fun doing it. Keep holding on, dear Marigolds! A break is near, but hang in there! This month, we will gather four times in our Marigold Force Podcast to focus on Perseverance all the way through the long stretch until the break. In each podcast, we will take you through our Marigold Force Workshop Flow. Whenever we meet - in person or in the podcast - we will take you through these elements. We start with a Cleanse - noticing where we are at and what is going on around us. Then we move on to a Guided Meditation that I will take us through. After the Guided Mediation, Joel will take us through 3 strategies we are working on at the Marigold Force this month. He will always share a strategy for Personal Growth, Professional Growth, and lastly, one we call the Community Maker. We finish out our Marigold Force Workshop with time to declare one Commitment for the week. We want you to be able to start your week with us - in our small yet mighty Marigold Force Community. At the Marigold Force, we believe that you can’t separate the three. Think of it as a simple math problem. Personal Growth + Professional Growth + Changemaker Community = The Marigold Force.
