Why I Am Trying to Be Less Productive
Have you ever got a tension headache because you were too productive? Me too. These days, it can be hard to put on the brakes. After one too many headaches this year, I did something about it, and I want to share it with you. By doing this little productivity trick, you can say goodbye to those overfunctioning stress headaches. You will also be pleasantly surprised by how simple it is.
Over the past two years, it’s been harder to get going which also means it can be harder to stop once I do get going. If you want to find some good enough balance in your work life, you came to the right place.
Here’s what we’re getting into:
- Why it is important to get ahead of overfunctioning
- What I do to ensure that Fridays and Mondays are extra stressfree
- Why teaching can’t be a marathon anymore
If you have ever had a stress headache from all the work you’re doing and want to still get things done but not overfunction, you need to listen to this episode. Let’s do it!

How I Stop Trying to Be Right All the Time
Are you tired of trying to convince people that you’re right? Be honest. I will. I for sure am. Trying to convince people of my valid (ahem...right) reasons for doing what I do is exhausting and rarely works. I am going to share a little inspiration that will help you profoundly. You will stop trying to be right and realize how to think again and be okay with even (deep breath) being wrong.
I have recently embraced this practice of what Adam Grant calls “thinking like a scientist” and I want to share it with you. If you are willing to stop being so exhausted from convincing people of your rightness, this one is for you.
Here’s what we’re getting into:
- Noticing the traps we tend to fall into
- Naming when we are using way too much energy to be right instead of getting it right
- Why even just being willing to think again makes a big difference
If you’re exhausted from trying to convince others of your rightness and awesomeness but don’t know what to do about it, you need to listen to this episode. Let’s do it!

Why I Suck at Gentleness and What I'm Doing About It
If I hear one more person (myself included) say “Maybe you just need to be a little more gentle on yourself.” I am going to lose it. I suck at gentleness. Maybe you’re like me and you know that gentleness with yourself and others is so important, but it’s been a struggle lately, I’ve got the episode for you. By doing this one little shift, I have been rocking at being more gentle.
I’ve been working on the whole gentleness thing officially for nine years. I will share with you what I am doing now to make it stick.
Here’s what we’re getting into:
- What I’ve realized about gentleness
- What one little shift I’ve made to make gentleness towards myself actually doable and fun
- Why it was so important for me to stop sucking so much at gentleness (and feeling bad about sucking so much!)
If you struggle to be gentle with yourself and are unsure what to do to make gentleness actually happen, you need to listen to this episode. Let’s do it!

The 1 Mindset Hack That Changed My Life
I hate talking about mindsets. I needed to say that. I just needed to put it out there. Okay, now that I’ve said that, there is one mindset hack that legit changed my life. I wish I knew this earlier but I am so excited to share it with you now.
I’ve been swimming in mindsets. But honestly, nothing stuck. It all just seemed too basic. It was obvious the people who had a more open mindset and those who didn’t. But upon entering my fourth year of coaching teachers, I had a big ah-ha moment.
Here’s what we’re getting into:
- Understanding that mindsets don’t matter if you do not know your bigger why (just cause, purpose, etc.)
- Recognizing that teaching is all about the long game. You can’t win or lose. You can only keep playing.
- Realizing why it doesn’t matter if I have my bigger why completely figured out.
If you’re tired of figuring out how to improve your mindset and support others with theirs, you need to listen to the 1 mindset hack that changed my life. Let’s do it!

Boundaries with Your Students are a Must
Not having enough time to do our jobs is one of the burdens of being a teacher. Consequently, it’s essential to guard our limited time and energy with our lives. This is why boundaries with our students are a must.
Boundaries might not be what you think they are, and they may look different with students versus with other adults. Embracing boundaries has been a learning process for me, so I’m excited to share some of my own stories so you can hopefully learn from my mistakes.

Simple Trick to Reduce Stress During the Work Day
How do you spend the tiny pockets of time waiting for a meeting to begin? How about the time when your students are transitioning back from lunch or recess and you’re waiting for them in the classroom? What you’re choosing to do can impact your overall stress quite a bit.
Confetti time is a term I learned to name these little moments. I used to spend my confetti time “catching up” on email until I learned how impactful these moments can be if I spend them in a different way. Impactful is also an understatement. Let’s dig into the magic of confetti time and how to use it to your advantage!

How to Batch Work (And Save Yourself Hours)
DrafBatch working might be my favorite productivity hack that I've ever learned. I share it whenever I can. Batch working will help you get twice as much done in a fraction of the time. This strategy gives your brain an advantage by focusing on similar tasks while also eliminating transitions.
Today, I'm going to dig into what batch working is, how to start batch working right away, and what's most important to remember as you move forward. I also use the term batching in this article. They’re the same concept. Here we go!t

Think Like an Essentialist: Why it's Crucial for Teachers
It is impossible to do it all. I'm starting with that statement because it is a brand-spankin' new school year. And I know I tend to approach the end of August extremely, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. All of the fun, creative ideas that I've seen other teachers doing are dangling in front of me like a Reese’s peanut butter cup. As I’m about to put a zillion different things in action, I need to come back and remind myself that it is impossible to do at all.
This episode of the Marigold Force Podcast is all about thinking like an essentialist, and getting really clear on what essential things you want to be focusing your energy on. Letting go of everything else is also part of this episode. Grab your notebooks because I’ll be going through this process with you, and I have a story that may help give you even more clarity. Let’s jump in!

Don't Start Working Until You Do This!
Stop! Don't waste your time on that. I'm screaming this from the rooftop because I need to hear it too. Just today, I caught myself reorganizing file names in Google Drive. This little stint is a red flag of mine. Usually, I’m avoiding something that's mentally challenging. When this happens I try to check myself by asking, “Is this the most important thing you should be doing right now, Jessie?”
Learn from my mistakes friend, and get really clear on what tasks deserve your limited time and energy before jumping into action mode. Eisenhower’s Urgent and Important Matrix has been an incredible tool to clarify what is most important, and how I should consider dishing out my time. If you’ve used Eisenhower’s matrix before, I urge you to still write down your items. Pen to paper is much more powerful than simply going through your to-do list in your head.

Make These 4 Things Habitual Now
Welcome to today's episode on Nonnegotiables: 4 Things All Teachers Need to Make Habitual Now.
What are your nonnegotiables each day at home and at work? You know, the things you do no matter what to keep yourself strong and vital, so you can keep tackling whatever comes up. Do these daily habits look way different than they did a year ago? Has it been difficult to keep up these habits or even figure out what they need to look like right now?
We get it. The daily habits turn into “every other day” habits that turn into “once a week” habits that soon make you question whether or not you even have anything in place since you don’t do them enough to even call them habits! We really get it.
Today is all about nonnegotiables. We will be talking about the rests, resets, reflections, and celebrations that you are missing and why it is time to bring them back, reimagine them, and make them more habitual.

Master of None: 3 Truths You Need to Hear to Embrace the Teaching Journey
Welcome to today's episode on Master of None: 3 Truths You Need to Hear to Embrace the Teaching Journey.
Have you found yourself going down the “if only” path lately? “If only my students and colleagues respected my expertise and ideas more, then I would feel so much better about my job!” “If only this was more fun, then I could enjoy what I am doing more.” “If only my school would do this, this, and that, then it would be so much better.” “If only we did it here more like they do over there, then we wouldn’t be in this mess!”
We are right there with you. We have definitely been going down that “if only” path. “If only our teachers saw how much is happening behind the scenes, then they wouldn’t have so many worries!” “If only everyone brought some more joy, then we could make the most of this reality.” “If only our district would do this, this, and that, then it would be so much better.” You are not alone with these “if only” thoughts. Today, we will be talking about the 3 Truths You Need to Hear to Embrace the Teaching Journey.
Depending on where you are at right now at this moment, these truths might seem a little too truth-y. We are doing that on purpose. Today is all about hearing the truths that we actually need to hear not the ones we might want to hear.

Get a Life: 4 Opportunities to Expand Beyond Being "Just a Teacher"
Welcome to today's episode on Get a Life: 4 Opportunities to Expand Beyond Being "Just a Teacher".
My guess is that over the past year, you have heard the word “resilience” and “resilient”. We're also guessing that you have heard about the importance of being resilient and building resilience in yourself and in your students. And when Iwesay resilience we mean being stronger in the face of adversity, being more determined, courageous, creative, and optimistic. All of which have been super easy this year! (Awkward laugh :) ) Nope. Not at all. Even the thought of resilience can seem impossible.
As hard as it might be to even think about building resilience or being a resilient human being right now, building resilience is actually one of the primary keys to getting a life that expands beyond being “just a teacher.” Today, we are talking about building all forms of resilience - mental, emotional, social, and physical. All of which we need to cultivate not only inside of our school building but also outside in our day-to-day life.
Marigolds, before you convince yourself that it is way too much work to build resilience, don’t worry. We’ve got you. Today, you will hear about how simple it can be to build mental, emotional, social, and physical resilience and how it is scientifically proven that you can do very little and still build tons of resilience.

Be Your Own Coach: 3 Ways to Turnaround Your Mindset and Suffer Less
Welcome to today's episode on Be Your Own Coach: 3 Ways to Turnaround Your Mindset and Suffer Less.
Have you ever thought to yourself, "They (student) just need to try harder! She (parent) needs to be a better parent. He (colleague) isn't doing his job." You know these thoughts aren't doing anyone any good, but you don't know how to get them out of your head.
We get it. All of those shoulds and superlatives can cloud our thinking. We might even do the work of questioning our thoughts and accepting them, but we still feel stuck and don’t know how to turn our mindset around. If you’re also realizing that thought like, “My colleague never listens to me!” is affecting you, but you don’t know what to do about it, we’ve got you! Today, we have 3 specific ways to turn around your mindset and suffer less.
If you haven't listened to our last episode on the Life-Changing Magic of Questioning Your Thoughts (S2E29), make sure you do that first. This episode can be listened to on its own, but it will be more powerful if built upon the learning and action from last week. We will be sharing, practicing, and giving story-filled examples around the ways we coach ourselves to turn our mindsets around.
The inspiration for this episode comes from Bryon Katie’s process called The Work but again, we will put our Marigold Force twist on things through the lens of educators.

The Life-Changing Magic of Questioning Yourself: The 4 Questions That Forever Changed Our Teaching
Welcome to today's episode on The Life-Changing Magic of Questioning Yourself: The 4 Questions That Forever Changed Our Teaching.
Have you ever had thoughts filled with “should”s? “They should be doing their job. My students should just listen the first time. These families should realize that I’m exhausted and that I don’t need to get 100 emails about the same thing!”
What about our superlative thoughts? “ I never can get this done on time. My students never listen to the feedback I give them. My colleagues always are late to our meetings!” You are not alone with these feelings. Today, we will be talking about the magical power of questioning yourself.
The inspiration for this episode comes from Bryon Katie’s process called The Work but as always we will put our Marigold Force twist on things through the lens of educators.

Beginner's Mind: 4 Simple Approaches to Free Yourself from Impossible Expectations
Welcome to today's episode on Beginner's Mind: 4 Simple Approaches to Free Yourself from Impossible Expectations.
Teachers! Have you ever been stuck in a professional learning or development and told yourself “I already know this! Why am I here? This is not only boring but a waste of my time!” Or what about when an administrator gave you some feedback and you thought to yourself “Okay! Whatever! Next! I am the one who is doing this every day! I am the expert on what I need!”
When those thoughts and feelings come up, that is the perfect moment to practice having a Beginner’s Mind. We will be sharing so many stories of when we did NOT practice Beginner’s Mind and how we had to learn the hard way how to get curious and free ourselves from all the expectations around us and inside of us. Being an expert isn’t a bad thing. But using Beginner’s Mind will help you take one step at a time, let go of prejudgments, and find a sense of inquiry where you welcome and focus the questions not just the answers.

This. Just. Isn’t. Working. No, today we are not talking about that classic breakup line. We are realizing when in our teaching professions we hit those real moments when we need to name that it’s not working and figure out how to advocate for ourselves.
We will be showing you 4 Steps to Effectively Advocate for Yourself so that you can have radically candid conversations with your colleagues, your administrators, yourself, or really anyone. It’s all about being effective and not getting or staying stuck in the It’s-Not-Working death trot.
Oh, the It’s-Not-Working death trot! We’ve been there. You know the feeling when you’re technically moving, but you know you are going nowhere! Well Marigolds, no more. Let’s get to the podcast and the action!
BONUS: Joel and Jessie have created a Free Guide just for you! - 6 Steps To A Killer Workflow. These steps have completely transformed our experience as educators over the years. With this guide, you’ll work through 6 key aspects we’ve identified in our own workflow and what we do to actually feel done working. Yes, it’s possible to feel “done!” (And taking your work home over the weekend is NOT in that guide!)

Have you ever struggled to get what you want? Is it difficult to ask for what you need? Have you ever written and rewritten an email all while not knowing if it’s getting to what you actually want? Stop Reinventing The Wheel: 3 Things You Should Start Copying
Welcome to Stop Reinventing The Wheel: 3 Things You Should Start Copying. We are the Marigold Force.
Are you tired of creating all the time? Coming up with systems, engaging lessons, and creative solutions to a zillion different problems is exhausting. We have a little secret for you. It’s OKAY to copy from the greats. There’s a reason we hear the phrase, “don’t reinvent the wheel” all the time.
We’re not talking about copying the lesson plans of your colleagues. We’re talking about three areas that will impact your day in an even deeper way - the flow, habits, and mindset of “great teachers.” Having a strong flow, habits, and mindset allows the real magic to happen.

3 Boundaries To Protect Your Workflow
Welcome to 3 Boundaries To Protect Your Workflow. We are the Marigold Force.
What tends to get in the way of your workflow? As you're moving through your day, what pulls your attention away from whatever you’re working on? Is it your colleagues? Maybe it’s your administration? Could it be yourself?
In today’s episode, we’ll be looking at three boundaries through a different lens and proactively tackling some of those distractions.
- Self: Stay committed to the schedule you created. We all have tasks we do to avoid work that truly needs to be done. Catch yourself when you feel yourself getting sucked in.
- Colleagues: How can you avoid scheduling meetings or socializing during those times you have slotted for various things?
- Leadership: Advocate for your needs when meeting times are being decided. If other tasks are being added to your plate get clarity on what needs to come off.

6 Steps To A Killer Workflow (Pt. 3)
Welcome to 6 Steps To A Killer Workflow - Part 3. We are the Marigold Force.
Do you ever fantasize about having a 2-hour long prep every day? Or just one full day without students or meetings to get caught up on your giant to-do list? Well, we don’t have a magic wand that can grant more time in the day, but we do have a framework for creating a workflow that may help you feel “done.”
We have been crafting and refining our own workflows for years. Our goal has always been to fill our day with the most important things and drop all the unnecessary baggage. Today we’re working through the final two steps. If you’re joining us for the first time, you’ll want to go back to part one in S2E19.
Remember, this isn’t a quick fix or something that will completely transform your teaching experience tomorrow. With all Marigold Force frameworks and strategies - the intentional effort is necessary. We will break it down into extremely manageable pieces and give lots of examples. However, the action steps are on you. You’ll only get out what you put in.
Let’s jump into Steps 5 and 6 - batching your tasks (with templates when necessary!) and reflecting/refining as you go.

6 Steps To A Killer Workflow (Pt. 2)
Welcome to 6 Steps To A Killer Workflow - Part 2. We are the Marigold Force.
Teachers- Do you wish you could feel “done” working for the day? You know... empty inbox, lessons prepared for tomorrow, student work graded, and the duty day hasn’t officially ended yet. That dreamy scenario is possible.
Today we’re working through “6 Steps To A Killer Workflow” - steps 3 and 4. Last week we covered steps 1 & 2, so if you’re a newbie to the podcast you should go back to S2E19. You don’t want to get started on step 3 if you don’t have the solid foundation of steps 1 and 2.
This isn’t a quick fix or something that will completely transform your teaching experience tomorrow. With all Marigold Force frameworks and strategies - the intentional effort is necessary. We will break it down into extremely manageable pieces, but you need to put in the work. It’s incredibly worth it if you do.
Let’s jump into Steps 3 and 4 - mapping out your day and focusing on one thing at a time.

6 Steps To A Killer Workflow (Pt. 1)
Welcome to 6 Steps To A Killer Workflow - Part 1. We are the Marigold Force.
What are the top 3 things you wish you could change about your teaching job? We would bet some serious money that more time is somewhere on your list. If it was, you’re in the right place.
We have been crafting and refining our own workflows for years. Workflows packed with the most important things and workflows that drop the unnecessary baggage. We put together a framework to help you create your own and hopefully stop all that sprinting around. Heck, you may even feel “done” with work at the end of the day. Imagine that!
Welcome to today’s episode! 6 Steps To A Killer Workflow. This is part 1 of a 3-part series. Today we’ll be focusing on the first 2 steps - knowing what is important to you (and why!) and listing out all your work tasks (and how long they take!). We’ll be going nice and slow with lots of examples, so you can intentionally put each step into place without feeling overwhelmed.

5 Things Teachers Have Permission For
Welcome to 5 Things Teachers Have Permission For. We are the Marigold Force.
- I can’t believe you did all that. You’re a superhero!
- My child is bored. I could definitely do your job better and this wouldn’t happen.
- Can you talk to my child about cleaning their room today? I tried, but they only listen to you.
- We appreciate all your hard work to make this crazy first week happen! Can you also draft up an email about all these changes and email all your families in the next hour before you go home for the night?
- I know you’re teaching math, reading, science, social studies, Pandemic health & safety, and social and emotional skills... but there was a major crisis last night so can you figure out a way to cover this in a way that feels authentic. Also make sure everyone feels safe, heard, seen, but not obligated to share.
How teachers are seen by society can shift in the blink of an eye. We can be viewed as superheroes doing the impossible. Other times we’re viewed as the root cause of all the problems in the world. Many seem to think, we hold all the power and make all the decisions, and when bad things happen it’s on us. In reality, the majority of decisions are thrust upon us with little to no input from teachers, but we’re on the front lines taking the punches for these decisions.
Unfortunately, society’s expectations of us aren’t going away. The same demands will continue to knock at our door- although we would all love a shift in our education system. What we do with those expectations and demands we can control. In this episode, Jessie and Joel compiled a list we all need to hear and come back to again and again. Dear teachers, here are: 5 Things You Have Permission For. Let’s do this!
Teachers, you have permission...
- To Not Be Okay
- To Make Mistakes
- To Not Have All The Answers
- To Not Enjoy Teaching
- To Have A Life

When you hear someone talking about “habits” does your stomach drop and you get ready to run in the other direction? You are not alone, my friend!

Three Simple Ways for Teachers to Crush New Habits (Pt. 1)
Welcome to 3 Simple Ways for Teachers to Crush New Habits (Pt. 1). We are the Marigold Force.
We’ve recognized that we need a change. We’ve set the goal and made a commitment to start building this new habit. For a few days, maybe even a week we do really well! But then something always gets in the way. Life gets busy. We mess up and never start again. It seems like an impossible task to actually make this thing a habit, and we give up and move on. Sound familiar? Well, you’re in good company because everyone has struggled with kicking bad habits or starting new habits at some point.
Teachers, let’s start crushing some new habits - or putting into practice the habits that we have been wanting to put into practice.
Today, we are talking about essential lesson #1: Start incredibly small with new habits - so small that it’s near impossible not to do it.
In this episode, Jessie and Joel share their stories around crushing new habits and what BJ Fogg, Ph.D. calls the Anatomy of Tiny Habits®.

Create a Curiosity Board
Welcome to Reclaiming Your Curiosity - Part 3. This is the third episode of our second season! We are the Marigold Force.
Often, people - especially Changemakers like you, me, and our Marigolds - feel stressed about finding their passion, and when they can’t unlock it, it causes tons of anxiety. Elizabeth Gilbert changed her stance on the whole "Find your passion!" narrative. Instead, she now says: "Stop trying to follow your passion. Instead, explore your curiosity."
In this episode, we will take the time to explore our curiosities with what is going on around us and why that might be. We will ask the simple question: If you had zero preparation for a 30-minute assessment in which all you had to do was talk about one topic, what topic would you choose? Our bonus strategy this week is to create a Curiosity Board. (Like a vision board but better!)
