Ian Gilligan creates profoundly resilient humans. 

We get into it with another Enlifted pirate gangster colleague of mine. 

I first learned of Ian by watching this ridiculous homie talking in an Irish accent on Instagram about all the ways we can use words to our advantage. I later learned this homie was an American and one of the top Enlifted coaches in the field. Ian uses his breath work and language ninja skills for good in the Kettlebell Collective, teaching folks how to swing a kettlebell and integrate proper breathing into their practice. 

They go all around the country and host digital courses as well so you can keep fit and learn the proper technique to crush the fitness game like a true gangster. Crazy thought - what if we took the time to properly prepare for a tour? Get a proper biomechanical assessment before hopping on board a 20 date tour, or even for just a few shows over the weekend... What could possibly happen with our performance if we took a proactive approach instead of treating solely when there was a problem that could cost a tour? That's what our conversation with Jamie Camp (MSc. PT Medical Acupuncture, SFMA, AiM, NKT & Adjunct Lecturer University of Toronto Dept of Physical Therapy) detailed. 

If you're wondering why your back hurts, or why your hip is shot or why that neck pain is starting to come back again even after the massage... save this show and take some notes!

 What's your "walk up" song?

  • "Wake Up" - Arcade Fire

What’s one thing you'd change about your industry?

  • Moving from Local “bandaids” to global treatment of the entire system - viewing the body as a whole, where the nervous system runs the show to keep our eyes level and feeling safe... and takes into consideration motor compensation, past medical history etc. I can often trace current back pain/neck injury to 25 year old ankle injuries through the biomechanics.

Jamie's Message 

  • Bands don’t always know what they need - they default to massage, (and I love my RMTs, I co-treat really closely with them) But there are solutions rooted in nervous system reprogramming and biomechanics/movement that could actually save tours. When someone’s injured, the tour is in jeopardy… Whether it’s a catastrophic ankle sprain or chronic overuse, and it doesn’t have to be that way.
    Most people get into physio to work with elite athletes... Very fun, but the more I worked with Musicians, I learned they’re elite athletes with no off season, and a much smaller court (and smaller movement repertoire ie more overuse injury), and they don’t even know it …… the music industry is just catching up to the idea of treatment, tune-ups, etc.

As a Kinesiology graduate, Gavin McHale followed all the rules. He got himself a good job, gained experience and launched his own personal training business in 2012. He quickly realized that following the traditional business model would lead to trading more time for more money.

So, he struck out to find a better way. Over the course of 4 years and tens of thousands of dollars invested, Gavin was able to build a 6-figure hybrid training business before founding the Maverick Coaching Academy in fall of 2019. In 2020, Gavin left the gym and went all in helping other personal trainers build their hybrid businesses.

In just over 12 months, he went from ZERO to $150k and helped several of his students surpass the 6-figure mark. He is on a mission to fix the broken fitness industry and strives to help his students build their best life.

That idea was nurtured, shared among a few other people that we knew were excited about it and over the past year that idea has grown into a movement. We are reinventing the game and rewriting the rules when it comes to the music industry and health and wellness. Los Cabos Artist, Dan Todd and his lovely wife, Natalie Belmont were two of those people that just got it. Today's show is all about the behind the scenes steps it takes to craft something bigger than you. Natalie is a Host on The Shopping Channel, and together with Dan is very committed to living well through food, exercise and fostering healthy relationships. This power couple was a blast to chat with as they were amidst home renovations and a fairly active season in the fall, which just goes to show that whatever comes up can be navigated with the right tools, some effort and the willingness and discipline to do so.

Everyone always being “on” all the time. There’s a workaholic nature of our industry and I burned myself out by being connected and working 24/7. Sometimes now I will text my producer or other people I am working on a project with and just be like “yo I need the night off from this on some mental health shit” and it’s understood and encouraged. I feel like I would have snapped at someone for saying something like that to me when I was in my most workaholic state but now I believe in finding time to recharge to ensure I find peace and can allow my brain to create and dream rather than always on business mode.

What the eff does "be well" mean anyway? It seems like this past year has carved out two camps, those who lead and those who don't. Those who lead are free from interruption and the rest are still waiting for someone else to give them permission to do something. 

We got to sit down with Matthew Cataldo of Montreal's Sombra, a band that makes music to turn off the lights to. They've been tearing it up this past year, and Matthew shares some of his experiences that lead to the production of "Free From Interruption". We get into how mental wellbeing and health in general plays a critical part in the rock star lifestyle. He's shown the way for others to follow and invest their time into themselves, get all weird and introspective and come out the other side with a laundry list of lessons learned. Alliteration aside, this was an awesome conversation and we're excited to share this as the pilot episode of the brand, spanking new Music Fit Podcast.

We spend a lot of time being told it's all about affirmations. You'll get everything you want if you just affirm it. I'm going to challenge that. I wanna introduce a concept called Interrogative Self-Talk - getting a conversation with ourselves going. It's super cool. Here's why: Our brain is wired to believe. So, how do we get to the place where we can believe in order to achieve? We gotta actually challenge ourselves. Rationally we then put into order and make sense of things and then work out a way to believe and therefore achieve. Try it out. Boom.

That's your Reticular Activating System (RAS) in action; the automatic filter you have in you to help you focus on what's important. That said, focus on the things you want and you'll get them.
