The Coaching Industrial Complex puts so much pressure on new coaches to be GOOD and SUCCESSFUL right away, and subtly (or not so subtly) reinforces the idea that if we're not "succeeding" it must be because there's something wrong with US, not with the industry we're swimming in.
But what if you were willing to let it be messy, imperfect, and to make a lot of mistakes on your way towards figuring out who you are as a coach and what your work is going to look like over the long haul? What if the path towards mastery involves a ton of practice, "failure", and learning along the way?
Are you willing to be a beginner for as long as it takes until you're not? Are you willing to prioritize learning over any particular result, to be bad at something until you're good at it? What would it be like if you stopped punishing yourself for not having it all figured out? All of this, plus what coaching has to do with Poker, in today's episode.
The Biggest Bluff

I see amazing coaches describing their work using coach speak all the time. I think every coach has done this, myself included. The way to reach your people, though, is to use THEIR words (coffee talk speak!), not yours.

Coach Penny Gambill joins me today to talk about her work supporting women who are ready to reclaim control over their lingering drinking habits and reach their health goals. She shares not only the various ways understanding her YouMap helped her build confidence in and communicate her unique coaching gifts, but also the unique way she chose to start shining her light and working with clients WITHOUT having to build a website.

Unless coaches are your target market, stop asking them what they think of your offfer/website/freebie. Ask the people that you want to help DIRECTLY. A Conversation Project will give you help you do this.
I challenge you to have 30 coaching conversations with 30 different people (within whatever market you might be considering!) to learn more about what they need, want, dream about, what problems they have and how they explain their lives in their own words. Notice what you're inspired by, drawn to, and what you can create with your coaching tools in response to what you learn.
You can say yes, no, or renegotiate.

Sharing a bit of my philosophy and approach to Discovery Calls through 5 "tips". This is by no means a rulebook or set of steps for everyone to follow - take what feels right, leave on the table what you know isn't meant for you.
1. Explore Fit
2. Be of service
3. Let them talk.
4. Assess alignment.
5. Leave details until the end.
Bonus #6. Test the Yes.

The more I listen to other teachers try to tell you how to build a coaching practice, the more I realize, "but that's just the right way for how THEY like to work - it won't be a fit for everyone!!" I hope today's episode helps you relax a bit in to the possibility that there IS no one right way to be on this journey, but there is a right way for YOU. Get clear on how you like to work, and everything becomes easier and more aligned.

In today's episode I'm sharing a simple metaphor that has helped both me and my fellow coaches get more clear about how to describe our work in a way makes sense to our dream clients. This episode is for any coach out there who needs a bit of a pep talk and who may be tired of going down paths that simply aren't the right fit. Do not worry: There is no one right to build a practice or be a coach, but there is a right way for YOU.
I think if you can figure out some combo of You, Who and How you're on your way to growing your practice. And if your Who and your How are still a work in progress, knowing and shining a light on who YOU are as a human and a coach is totally accessible, right here and now.
Your coaching identity is uncovered by focusing on two simple things: Self-awareness around how you like to work and direct, pure coaching experience. This is where the rubber meets the road. Learn more in today's episode!

Your unique role in this wide landscape of coaching is as much about who you are and HOW you do your work as it is about who you want to help. In today's episode I share what I believe are some missing pieces of the definition of "niche" for coaches and invite you to consider that you can build a practice aligned to your gifts and your lifestyle.
It can sometimes feel like being a coach and building a practice is like being in the Wild West - so many options, so much potential, and high chance of struggling with overwhelm or going down paths that end up being a misfit. Through it all we're paving a two-lane highway through it all.
