Episode 343; Age restrictions on politicians and encouraging our nations youth to be leaders.
Episode 343; Age restrictions on politicians and encouraging our nations youth to be leaders.
In this episode I make a case for establishing restrictions on the upper age for our politicians and advocate for the youth of our country to take a greater leadership role. On the old man's tip I have some observations related to how effective our society has become in communicating. On mindset for happiness, we're going to talk about determination and what to focus on in order to meet the goals that we set. And a funny thought crossed my mind, it goes a little bit like this, something ain't right if the medicine tastes good.

Episode 215; Following up and a "Big Reveal"
On this episode, there's a theme of "follow-up".  I have found some research on and heard a story about an individual that leads me to following up on my stories of "people are getting worse at driving" and there's no such thing as social media research.  Of course there will be a thought provoking pep talk and we will certainly play some trivia.  But last, I'm ending up with a Big Reveal.

Episode 342; Mental toughness, is it essential for our success and do today's youth have it?
Episode 342; Mental toughness, is it essential for our success and do today's youth have it?
We all have a point at which we will quit… give up on the task we are trying to accomplish.  That task can be mental, emotional, or as this old coach is accustomed to… physical.  Getting my athletes to that quitting point was absolutely essential to the training I put them through. Not only do I believe it is important for us to give it our all, to the point that we can go any longer, I also believe that the willingness to get there has diminished significantly over the last 4 decades. And I have reasons why I believe that is happening I quickly learned as a young coach, all those years ago,  what is probably the most important part of coaching…. And it translates exceptionally from athletics to life.  My objective was developing developing superior mental toughness. To make my guys quitting point outlast their opponent. The mind I find gives up long before the body, mental toughness is more difficult to achieve than physical strength conditioning toughness. This mental toughness level, separates out people. I’ve noticed that through the years, that the bar, for what a persons top level of mental toughness is, has lowered. The kid of the '80's and '90's understood that and they realized that they needed it and bought wholeheartedly into it.  As we moved into the 2000's kids changed. Many kids believed me and thought they bought into what I was doing. They thought they were already there….. I saw more and more examples of how mental toughness training was ineffective…. It didn’t work on the contemporary athlete. Why??? I believe it was because of all the positive reinforcement and the way that they were raised. Many of them, certainly not all, but many. And now, two decades into the new century, I see the mental toughness of young people continue to evolve.  Kids now, pretty much doesn't feel that that mental toughness is important. They are more concerned about technique….. Which is really the easy part. Not saying they are lazy…. They’ll spend enormous amounts of time practicing. Mental toughness doesn't really concern the current athlete because they think they've already got it Parents tell them they already have it, Their youth coach is telling them have it. From where I sit the world looks to be moving to be less tough because society is less interested in toughness.  Kids are nicer…. just as dedicated….. Noticeably more talented…… but adverse to failure… adverse to risk taking really…. Not all that interested in trying new things or taking a chance on anything that may lead to failure. Failure is such a horrible concept they will do anything to avoid it. And that will be less lessons learned… because nothing good can come out of taking the easy road. Not all kids, but certainly most……. It’s what our society is teaching and expecting of them.    I remember when paying for things was much different. I Wrote a check the other day and nearly forgot how to do that. I’ve recently started using my phone to pay for things at stores. I don’t have to even have my wallet with me when I go shopping….. All I need is that all important phone.  I wonder about the affect of overspending… when it’s so easy. When I pay cash, I watch it go…. Really feel it go so I’m likely more cautious with my spending habits. On "Mindset for Happiness" I discuss the importance of goal setting.  Goals both illuminate our path so we know where we are going, and accomplishing goals motivates us to continue on towards higher and higher achievement.

Episode 341; For better or worse, what changes has the pandemic made to our lives?
Episode 341; For better or worse, what changes has the pandemic made to our lives?
The world has changed in many ways since the pandemic, some good and some bad.  We are a cleaner people that are much more concerned about germ passing behaviors.  Do you remember bellying up to the bar and there would be a bowl with some pretzels or nuts out.  Everybody would be diving into it and you had no idea if the guy next to your had a cold or anything.  Or, how about if the guy next to you goes to the bathroom?  You would never know if he washed his hands or not. The way we communicate and interact changed.... think ZOOM.  As a society we trust a LOT less.  We don’t trust BIG med, Big Pharma,  BIG Government.... BIG anyone.  We have, understandably, allowed fear to affect the way we live our life.  It seems like it will be for ever that masks will be worn. On “Mindset for Happiness” the topic is desire.  How determination and dedication are needed to push us to the happy life we want. I have a cooking tip about getting a meal done with all the parts coming across the finish line at the same time. And I heard, what I consider a funny thing,  a virtual romance… I’ll explain and we can both scratch our heads.

Episode 339; How could we tell if the government is overreaching into public education?
In this episode Tim and I discuss the state of public education.  The federal government, has for more than a century, been using public education to affect change in our society.  That's been accelerating over the decades, and now we question if that influence hasn't become over-reaching.  How has government influence affected public education?  What does the future of public education look like?  Is education really at a place that we want it to be?  Public education, so many questions!!

Episode 338; Discussing how time shapes our life when creating a lifetime
Lifetime, one word that comes from two others.  Life and time.  One of those words, life, we have some measure of control over.  The other word we do not have any control over.  The come together to make create our lifetime. People tend to think and discuss a lot about time… and life.  The challenge is to Live in the present, Live for the future, Live from (what we learned in) the past.

Episode 337; The one thing we all leave behind, a Legacy.
Episode 337; The one thing we all leave behind, a Legacy.
On My Mind- Legacy  A phone call from my old High School Coach  I quickly recalled a conversation with a kid last year when I was coaching  He noticed I was showing a technique he was familiar with, but with a different twist… or emphasis on some finer points  Asked me where I got that?  I told him my high school coach taught this in the 70’s  And I bet he got it from his legendary coach when he was in school in the 60’s and I wouldn’t be surprised if it went back into the 50’s  It occurred to me that I was teaching something that had been handed down for at least 3 generations.    My old guys who are coaching, are probably passing some of that along as well  Red Schmidt technique is being taught by people he never knew or who never even knew he existed  That’s actually pretty cool when you think about it  It’s been done through all of human history  That’s legacy, what you leave behind weather you did it intentionally or not  In both your professional and personal life you interact with other people and develop many, many relationships of various kinds  Those people remember you, and oftentimes will carry on the lessons, the techniques, the ideas or philosophies you shared with them  And it just keeps on passing forward  Eventually, the who of where these things come from no longer matter  They are just added to that great database we know as the human race  Some legacies last longer than others, before they dilute into our society and become indistinguishable from all the others, take Shakespeare for example.    But make no mistake, every living soul leaves some legacy behind when that person moves on  So an unknown 1400’s era sheepherder in the Scottish highlands is no less valuable to our society overall than William Shakespeare was.    So, what do you do with this knowledge now… should you be careful of every move you make?  Of course not, be aware, embrace the awesome responsibility of your legacy  At work, at home…. Everywhere you are, impart the knowledge you have gained from all of your experiences  The world really is a better place because of all our legacies.   I remember when mailers used to be an annoying intrusion into my life.  Now it’s the robo callers and texters  Junk mail decreased with the advent of email and it didn’t take long for junk email  Pretty easy to take care of  Now, the proliferation on robo calls and robo texts has me missing the good old day’s of junk mail  On “Mindset for Happiness” The topic is “Stand for Something and I use a quote from Howard Cosell.  Do you know who that is? And on a Funny Thing Happened- I got a pimple… and it made me feel like a kid again!

Episode 336; According to many people, "there are two kinds of people"
Episode 336; According to many people, "there are two kinds of people"
You’ve heard the old line “there’s two kinds of people”... and then the philosopher expounding this knowledge inserts his or her own saying, which is based on personal observations, that will fit into the framework that person is pontificating on. It might be cutting sandwiches, putting Toilet Paper on the roll, or any other number of quirky things people do.  AND OF COURSE I have a take on this as well.  BUT, you will never have heard this one before.  Furthermore, you’ll see yourself in this metaphor as well as the people you know best. Don’t worry, I got this…. Even without your help I’m more of the got this guy…… way more In fact, I can’t actually recall a time right now where I’ve asked for help So, naturally…. I admire the got this person I’ve always been at odds with the help, help, help person…. Especially as an employee.  I feel like if I’m helping you do your job I’m doing your job.  And sometimes I find it easier to just do it myself The big difference is if I’ve put that person into a difficult situation…. Then you better believe I’m there to help Being an I’ve got this person, I’m torn with the help, help, help people.  Emotionally, well frankly, you annoy me.  Can’t you do anything on your own. Intellectually, I admire you for being able to admit you need help. Pride is in my way and it should be like that Help, help, helps are more in tune with themselves and further along in emotional development than us knuckle dragging we got this people It’s a sliding scale depending on the topic, I’m more one way or the other and so is everyone else Home repair- inclination is I got this, but real soon I realize it help, help, help I constantly fight with myself along this continuum about what is the right place to be…. how much harm is my attitude, I got this or help, help, help going to do to me or someone else? And I want to be less I’ve got this and more help, help, help…. kind of a personal improvement thing HOWEVER… know thyself…… IF I wasn’t an I got this there would never be an Old Man’s Podcast…… I’d probably still be waiting for someone to help me set it all up How about you??? Properly aligned with I’ve got this and help, help, help? Move from one end of the scale to the other, depending on the task, well enough Do you know thyself?? I’ll actually take some help on this note…  Please Subscribe and/or Leave a review and pass it on

Episode 335: How traditions lead to success, I remember the newspaper and getting their attention
Episode 335: How traditions lead to success, I remember the newspaper and getting their attention
People want to be the best at whatever it is they do.  That’s a good thing.  We all feel that we are “pretty good” at what we do, or we wouldn’t be doing it, would we.  But we want, strive, and work to be great at what we do.  So the natural inclination of most people is to ask “what separates the good from the great”.  Sports, business, corporations, any organization really.  Why are some just so much better ergo, so much more successful? In a word, I’d say tradition.  And where does that come from?  If the answer was that easy, you probably would not need me to tell you about it.  I’m Coach Streb and on this episode of The Old Man’s Podcast, I will tell you more about successful organizations and the characteristic they posses we call tradition.

Episode 334; It’s Beginning to Look A LOT like Christmas
Episode 334; It’s Beginning to Look A LOT like Christmas
Christmas is a time for children, it’s a time we all become kids again.  Memories and hope for the future.  BUT, let’s not forget to live in the moment… and that’s living like a kid.  What we need to get into that frame of mood is a 9 year old… that’s the vibe we should be looking for.  And who would be better fitted to do that for us, than our Old Man’s Podcast contributor, 9 year old James.  He was a huge hit for Halloween, and he’ll be again for Christmas. The topic is Christmas for this episode And with Christmas on My Mind, we’re starting off with that.  Once a year I feel like a kid again, how about you???? 9 year old James, who help us enjoy Halloween is here to spread Christmas cheers to all the kids, young and old, who enjoy the Old Man’s Podcast.  On  “Mindset for Happiness” I’m continuing the discussion on Character, focusing in on RESPECT specifically.  I have a fun fact to share with you about Native Americans and on a funny thing, a little back story on the Rudolf the Red Nose reindeer show.  And, of course, we play some trivia ourselves, Christmas is the topic. Nine years old is the perfect age to really enjoy Christmas… For that matter, looking back from where I am now, I think enjoying life really peaks around that age.  But this episode, we’re focusing on Christmas. Like the 9 year old Ralphie in Christmas story, the lens a kid that age see’s the world through is special… and the magical time of Christmas viewed through that lens makes for an overwhelming spectacle.  What we, well old people, need in order to get a glimpse of that spectacle is to be led there by The Old Man’s Podcast contributor, 9 year old James.  He’ll help instill the spirit of Christmas into anyone! “Mindset For Happiness” To be happy…. With our lot in life… our personal circumstances….. We have to be happy with ourselves first and foremost.  On that premise, character matters….. It matters A LOT. Maybe it’s Karma, maybe it’s the almost magnetic attraction to people of high character….. I can’t exactly put my finger on it, but focusing on our own character makes us happy.  Last episode I discussed honesty as a pillar to our character and this episode the subtopic is loyalty.  Today the topic is “Respect”.. A truly defining element of our character.  We don’t always agree with everyone.  BUT we need to respect what they are, what they stand for, what they believe in.  Don’t expect to get respect if you refuse or are even reluctant to give it.  Respect other peoples ideas, their property, even your opponents when in a competitive situation.  Respect, don’t fear though.  To be respectful of your opposition in any competition is a wise move.  To NOT respect you competition is to be arrogant, and arrogance is a fools errand, often the apex of mistakes and can’t easily be rectified.  I like what NFL legend Jim Brown had to say about Respect.  “One thing I learned in football is that you must have respect.  It is not so important that people like you, but it is an absolute must that you have their respect”.  Well said Jim Brown… and something we all have to pay attention to on our own accord.  It seems these days that we are a polarized society that has completely thrown out even the desire to be respectful.  Maybe we can win back civil society through one respectful act at a time.  It’ll take all of us to do that, and let’s start right here on The Old Man’s Podcast.  That sure seems like a Mindset for Happiness to me

Episode 333; Retired people, Loyalty, and Toilet Trivia
Episode 333; Retired people, Loyalty, and Toilet Trivia
When I see a friend or acquaintance these days, I most often get a question from them that goes something like this “so how’s retirement going?”  Believe it or not, it’s kind of a tough question to answer. In this episode, I try to answer that question with another recent retiree, Sandy.  I think together, we can make sense of this for all you curious people out there. On  “Mindset for Happiness” I’m continuing the discussion on Character, focusing in on Loyalty specifically. And I have a funny list of Toilet Trivia you’re going to chuckle at.  Of course, we play some trivia ourselves Some observations of a retired person;   1) I don't know what day it is and I don't care  2) As a young person, I always wondered why old people seemed so cheap.  Now I get why old, when you aren't working you seem to have less control over your INCOME so you feel like you need to control your EXPENSES.  As a result, I want to save every penny possible and seem to be always looking for a deal, happy hour, senior discounts that sort of stuff.  When I travel, people refer to me as "being on vacation"... I’m NOT on vacation, I’m retired.  Vacations are when you take off from work, I don’t work.  My wardrobe has completely changed.  Work clothes out, sweat pants in… In that sense, retirement feels a little like I gave up. “Mindset For Happiness" To be happy…. With our lot in life… our personal circumstances….. We have to be happy with ourselves first and foremost. On that premise, character matters….. It matters A LOT. Maybe it’s Karma, maybe it’s the almost magnetic attraction to people of high character….. I can’t exactly put my finger on it, but focusing on our own character makes us happy Last episode I discussed honesty as a pillar to our character and this episode the subtopic is loyalty Former US president Woodrow Wilson had a great quote on loyalty.  He pointed out that “loyalty means nothing unless it has at its heart the absolute principle of self-sacrifice. Love that quote, and it really brings to a sharp focus how our happiness is affected by our own sacrifices. Exactly how’s thas??? Wouldn’t I be most happy with other people were making sacrifices for me?  Sure, maybe initially…. But that isn’t the foundation of true happiness…. Being the recipient of sacrifices is a hollow kind of happiness, it doesn’t last and it’s not genuine When we are loyal to a cause, a person, and organization… others see that and want to emulate or be like us.  That’s really the first step in effective leadership.  Sacrificing for others, is a demonstration of loyalty, a quality that all effective leaders have Loyalty is the first quality an employer, boss or coach looks for in an employee or player.  Heck it’s the premier quality we all look for in relationships.  And the number one reason a relationship fails, is most often a lack of loyalty You can have a LOT of talent and even luck…. But without demonstrated loyalty, people aren’t going to want you around for very long And that’s something that can make even the grumpiest of people happy.  Lot’s of friends, many solid relationships, and people that really genuinely care about you And they will, when you have demonstrate how loyal you are to them A mindset for happiness really requires us to make the kind of sacrifices for others that demonstrates our loyalty

This episode starts off with a discussion on "people just don't wear hats anymore"! Once fashionable, hat wearing is now ancient history, other than for a practical reason. The term plant-based chicken is a farce, and for a couple of different reasons. You're going to learn why. On Pep Talk I ask that we "Take a Close Look at Ourselves" Finally, MORE evidence that "the phone is always listening".

Episode 315; A "Little Bit of Hell and a Little Bit of Heaven, We're the Class of '77" reunion recap
Although the general topic is High School Reunions, this episode is born from my own personal experience at the Riverview Gardens Class of 1977 45th reunion. Don't worry if you aren't interested in that particular class, I work this episode on the concept of high school reunions in general. Pep Talk is devoted to the idea all High School graduates strive for, to change the world. And on Engage Your Brain, where we play trivia, the questions are all centered around the year 1977.

Episode 314; Stories of an Oklahoma hitchhiker, Phone trees and a "cheater" confesses
A recent trip through Oklahoma burdened me with an unwanted hitchhiker. I remember when a telephone tree was used, quite effectively, for mass communication, and that would never work now. How going to a different grocery store feels like cheating. And a pep talk on "paying attention".

Episode 312; Somebody has got to tell me the rules for our culturally sensitive world.
On this episode I ask a common question, especially from many of us older people, what are the rules? Somebody has got to explain to us what is acceptable and what is not acceptable in our culturally sensitive, politically correct world. I'm just looking for a little clarity here. I miss homecoming parades and I want to complain about that. I have a little bit on happiness and what one of the most positive people you could ever hear from, Michael J. Fox, has to say about that. And a funny thing happened to me which has led to some humility on my part.

Especially if it has a date printed on it.  Have you ever heard the phrase "Will that get me a first down?"  Well you will now, and it will help you with your decision making process.  You likely have heard the quote "The truth will set you free"... well on pep talk, let's flesh that out to the next step in being truthful.  Of course we play Trivia on "Engage Your Brain", and I will throw in a tech tip for you to enhance your Television viewing and streaming pleasure.

Episode 201; The Old Man's Podcast "Best of Series"- What's Wrong with Kids These Days?!?!
If you’ve ever wondered to yourself, or aloud, “what’s wrong with kids these days?”, you aren’t alone.  One elder gentleman, that I bet you are familiar with, lamented on the younger generation; "the children now love luxury, they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders. Children contradict their parents and tyrannize their teachers". Now that’s a guy that feels there’s something wrong with kids these day’s? Find out who that famous person is on this episode of the Old Man's Podcast.

Episode 202; The Old Man's Podcast "Best of Series" Is it possible parenting is the reason why we wonder "what's wrong with kids these days"
From the Old Man's Podcast "Best of Series".  So, "What's wrong with kids these days?". I can answer that question but it will be with more questions. Is there something about the way we raise kids that creates what we think are problems with kids? Are we raising children to be afraid to take risks? I contend that current parenting strategies are creating an entire generation, the "Participation Trophy" generation, adverse to risk taking and addicted to receiving praise. Could it be that is what is wrong with kids these days is actually their parents?
