Sarah Moule Interview with music

Sarah Moule Interview with music

Over the past few years singer Sarah Moule has established a rapidly growing reputation as one of Britain’s most exciting new jazz talents. Her highly acclaimed debut album It’s A Nice Thought, released in 2002, showed that in lyricist Fran Landesman and composer Simon Wallace (“one of the finest songwriting partnerships alive” The Observer) she has found a source of contemporary songs which are melodic, thought-provoking, literate and witty, and lend themselves perfectly to Sarah’s classic vocal interpretation. Sarah grew up in Bexhill-on-Sea on the East Sussex coast where her passion for singing was sparked by singing English folk songs with her large musical family. She spent the 1980s working and travelling in South America, Asia, China, Australia, Europe and the USA. On returning to London in the early 1990s she met jazz singers Ian Shaw and Claire Martin who introduced her to the song-writing team of veteran American lyricist Fran Landesman and Welsh pianist and composer Simon Wallace.

Ian Freeman talks about his Passions

Ian Freeman talks about his Passions

Businessman, television consultant and former theatrical agent Ian Freeman was born into what was then considered the most powerful dynasty in entertainment. Lew Grade, a former Russian Charleston dancer, secured the rights for Britain’s first commercial television network in 1955 and together with London Palladium manager Val Parnell established Associated Television (ATV). This wasn’t the only Grade family business that was thriving as during the early 1930’s Lew and his brother Leslie had created The Grade Organisation which would become one of the most prolific talent agencies in the world. Ian promptly joined the organisation as a junior theatrical agent in 1968 working under the formidable entertainment agent Cyril Berlin who was specifically responsible for such stars as Des O’Connor, Lonnie Donnagan and Ted Rogers. This was a true powerhouse of entertainment and anyone who was anyone wanted to be associated with the Grade’s. It was a great grounding for Ian and there’s not a day that goes by where he doesn’t use a piece of knowledge that he learned during these four glorious years. Surrounded by significant figures within the development of British Light Entertainment who are somewhat sadly forgotten about today including Billy Marsh, Kenneth Earle and Peter Prichard, Ian was in the perfect environment to learn about the fine workings of theatrical representation.     After four years at the Grade Organisation, Ian made a significant move into the Leisure industry with his cousin Michael Grade. To Ian, Leisure and entertainment go hand in hand as you’re essentially providing a service and everyone is constantly on show. Their company First Leisure was founded in 1986 and quickly expanded to music bars and seaside attractions. As Ian explains, running a nightclub can be compared with being the director of a big budget variety show for the simple reason that the aim is for everyone to have the best possible time and every member of the production company knows their role. Providing entertainment is what the Grade’s have been bred on so Ian found it easy to adapt and customise the execution of the entertainment performance to cater for different audiences. Such a formula proved lucrative and for over a decade First Leisure was one of the most popular entertainment outlets in Britain. Yet the stars kept calling him back into the spotlight…     Having enjoyed a long association with the Entertainment Artistes’ Benevolent Fund ever since his uncle; Bernard Delfont was made life president in 1962, Ian has always felt close to the charity. In 2007 he was honoured when he was asked to become the honorary treasurer of the EABF, now the Royal Variety Charity, raising money for unfortunate people throughout the UK. Primarily established to help and support entertainers who had fallen on hard times, the Royal Variety Charity has a responsibility to look after those who might be down on their luck and in need of a helping hand. The theatrical residential home; Brinsworth House in Twickenham is funded through profits from the Royal Variety Performance and other charity events throughout the year. This is something that Ian remains extremely proud of and the emotional attachment to the charity makes it so much more than a job.

Ian Redmond is a tropical field biologist and conservationist, renowned for his work with great apes and elephants. For more than 35 years he has been associated with Mountain Gorillas, through research, filming, tourism and conservation work.  He has served as Ambassador for the UN Year of the Gorilla in 2009 and for the UNEP Convention on Migratory Species since 2010. He says, “I am a naturalist by birth, a biologist by training, and a conservationist by necessity. But conservation for me isn’t just about saving species. On a larger scale, the planet needs us to save functioning eco-systems; on a smaller scale, we must also recognise that species are made up of individual animals. For me, it became personal when I had the privilege of getting to know individual wild animals in the wild... I can truthfully say that some of my best friends are gorillas, and I care passionately about them and the future of all life on Earth."

Rugby legend AND Strictly star Austin Healey joins us for a Passions chat.

Rugby legend AND Strictly star Austin Healey joins us for a Passions chat.

Austin Healey, also known as the Leicester Lip, was a hugely versatile player, gaining international caps for England at scrum-half, fly-half and wing.  Healey began his career with Orrell and Waterloo at wing or outside centre before switching to scrum-half when he signed for Leicester Tigers in 1996. It was this admirable versatility that proved to be Healey's greatest success and disadvantage in the game leading to him often, unfairly, being labelled as a "jack of all trades, master of none".  In reality Healey was at times a fiercely intelligent scrum-half, full of snap and niggle and always aware of the chance for a sniping break. On the wing, his pace and tactical awareness allowed him opportunities at club and international level following the arrival of Fijian Waisale Serevi at Leicester. His desire to play at fly-half was granted at Leicester at the expense of Andy Goode, but Healey never reached the heights expected of him in the position. Indeed, he only won a single England cap at 10.  Healey was an often outspoken member of the rugby fraternity, having spats with coaches Graham Henry, Andy Robinson and Pat Howard during his eventful career.  He received his full England debut against Ireland in the 1997 Five Nations, and went on to amass 51 England caps. During his career he was a Lions tourist in 1997 on the victorious tour of South Africa and again in 2001 during the series loss to Australia. His only Test caps came as a replacement in the second and third Tests in 1997.  Healey's finest moments on a rugby pitch came in the green and red of Leicester however. In the 2001 an 2002 Heineken Cup finals Healey was instrumental in bringing the silverware to Welford Road. He provided the break that led to the winning score against Stade Francais in 2001, and he scored the decisive try himself against Munster in 2002.  Following the high of the 2002 Heineken Cup win, it was back down to earth when Healey was left out of England's World Cup-winning squad in 2003. This event would gnaw at Healey to the end of his career, and he never played for England again following the World Cup warm-up with France in August 2003.  His retirement came at the end of the 2005-06 season following several damaging injuries. Healey then worked for Credit Suisse and served as an analyst for the BBC and Sky. In 2008 Healey took part in the sixth series of Strictly Come Dancing, following in the footsteps of Matt Dawson and Kenny Logan. In 2010, Healey was confirmed as ESPN's lead analyst prior to the UK channel's first season of Aviva Premiership rugby.

He has literally hundreds of television appearances to his name including three top-rating hour-long one-man specials on Channel 4 and one on ITV. Paul is probably the UK’s busiest stand-up corporate entertainer, performing after-dinner entertainment, link-presenting and hosting awards ceremonies at events worldwide. In the last year alone he has appeared in Paris, Cannes, Nice, Monte Carlo, Dubai, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Manila, Mauritius and Tokyo. We are truly honoured to have him on the show .

Rocco Buonvino, artist, concert impresario and event organiser talks to Passions.

Rocco Buonvino, artist, concert impresario and event organiser talks to Passions. With over 20 years in the music industry, artist and concert impresario, Rocco Buonvino has been at the forefront of staging some of the biggest entertainment events, from sold-out concerts to musical theatre productions and bespoke events with world superstars. Over two years until his untimely death in May 2012, Rocco looked after some of Robin Gibb's activities including the completion of his first classical work "The Requiem for Titanic 2012 Concert", with The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at Westminster Central Hall. Early in 2010 Rocco staged his own very first classical production, The Beatles Philharmonic Concert at the Royal Albert Hall, a spectacular orchestral concert of pure classical interpretations to celebrate the music of the World's Greatest Legendary Band, The Beatles. Special star performers included Dame Shirley Bassey, Beverly Knight, Tony Christie, Susan Black to name a few. Again, with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Alan Chircop and orchestral arrangements by Wayne Grima. Other musical credits include The Soldiers Charity Concert at the London Palladium, promoting and staging of shows for world-renowned artists such as Sir Cliff Richard, Rod Stewart, The Chemical Brothers, Duran Duran. Each year Rocco co-stages the Malta Music Awards where he brought and orchestrated Peter Andre and his ITV team in 2013, Peter receiving several awards. Rocco did the same with Robin Gibb and Billy Ocean to name but a few. Rocco produced and directed his first live TV show, called Let's Talk Music, a highly successful award winning weekly music debate show on ONE TV in Malta. In June 2013 Rocco brought Hollywood icon Al Pacino with his acclaimed event, An Evening with Pacino to the UK for the very first time, for one unmissable night at the London Palladium. A unique event, a once in a lifetime opportunity to get up close and personal and share private moments with one of the greatest actors of his generation. The evening included an on-stage interview projected on large screen as well as giving audience members a rare chance to speak to Pacino in an audience Q&A session.  More recently Rocco has been active in the world of TV producing a range of programmes broadcasting on the Sky TV platform.
