014 | Transition from YOLO to Financial Independence

014 | Transition from YOLO to Financial Independence

When Geodel first arrived in the U.S., it was like a completely different world to him. He earned much more than his salary in the Philippines. Money was not a problem anymore. He could buy anything he wanted by just working a little bit more. He splurged on the things that he believed could give him true happiness and contentment. Strangely, when he thought that he had it all, it seemed that something is missing.

Compared to most of our guests’ stories, this would be quite different. In this episode we will talk about the things Geodel did, that you shouldn’t do to achieve financial freedom. His life greatly resonates to most of us, sometimes, life just gets overwhelming enough that you just want to tame that little child inside you to make everything simpler… until it’s not!

Geodel is a physical therapist working in US, he is a husband to Dana and a brand-new father to their precious daughter, Olivia. Also, he is now a real estate investor. He started from living a carefree/ YOLO life and now on the path to financial independence.

We would like to thank Geods for bravely sharing his story with us. Truly, the path to financial freedom is diverse, it’s not a one size fits all. You will forge your own to make it all worthwhile.

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” -Philippians 4:13

This is the bible verse that our guest lives by. Rachelle is an overseas Filipino worker who faced numerous struggles when she first moved to the United States. Amidst the challenges, she was still able to save enough to buy a property in the Philippines in her first year, and a lot more thereafter!

People could easily dismiss her success by saying, “She lives in the US, of course she can do that!” I will tell you though, that she lives in New York city, where the cost of living is crazy high and the temptation to purchase branded goods, dine in expensive restaurants, and a lot more money-burning activity persist.

This episode is relatable to OFWs all over the world as she will discuss her hacks, side hustles and strategies of earning and saving more as an OFW to reach financial independence.

Dr. Rachelle Mae Ayonayon is working as a fulltime Doctor of Physiotherapist in US but aside from that, she also has other side hustles like modeling, hosting, yoga instructor, managing properties and many more!

“Falling is easy

Staying in love is hard

Hard to be honest

And keep your heart open

To be who we truly are

Without the excuses

Without the façade

There’s no pretending

Here in your love.”

-Sails (Pat Barrett)

Most guest in the F.I. podcasts that we listen to mentions that the greatest hack you can do to achieve financial independence is to choose the right partner

For our SEASON 1 FINALE, we invited two of our “FloriFriends” and life mentors, Angela and Chris Pempsell. Angela is one of the founders and admins of @Minimalist Philippines and Chris have been pursuing financial independence way before it was even popular.  They will share with us why they started the Minimalist Ph group, their struggles, and strategies as they venture in their financial independence journey as a couple.

Aside from debonaire looks and good moral character, having same interests, values and dreams in life are some of the most common things to look for a partner. As the song says, falling in love is easy but keeping that FIRE burning is quite difficult.

Let’s be honest, one of the most common points of conflict in marriage is money. A third of people say they argue about money with their spouse, hide purchases that would not be approved leading to separation and divorce. Setting clear boundaries before entering this sacred union could be helpful in the long run, especially if one is trying to reach financial freedom.

The effort each should bring in the marriage is never 50/50, but 100/0 to make the marriage work. We are no expert in this as we just started our married life and FI journey, but what we do know is that… money will never be an issue between us.

008 | Choosing to Hire (Or Not) a Financial Advisor

Have you ever been scammed by a financial advisor? We understand how losing blood, sweat and tears of hard work in an instant could make you lose faith in financial advisors altogether.

There are bad apples out there but not all financial advisors are created equal. There are those who will understand, support, and look at you as a person and not just another number to meet their quota.

In this episode, we invited Charmayne Galang, one of the top personal financial advisors of Sun Life Philippines. She will debunk the myths, give insider advice, and clear doubts in choosing to hire (or not) a financial advisor—especially for those who want to be financially independent

007 | Striving to be Better Stewards of Success

Do you think that Financial Independence is NOT the path for you? This is because you bear the responsibility of taking care of yourself and helping your family. As Filipinos, it is our second nature to be there for our family when given the opportunity to do so. For this reason, we left them back home in search for a better life. Now in another country, we receive plentiful resources that we could deploy as we see fit.

Taking responsibility for the gifts and resources we’ve been given is no easy task. You wish to take your family with you as you climb the success ladder, but it’s not as easy as it looks. How do you manage your financial life without forsaking your responsibilities? How can you provide for them and not neglect your personal needs in the process? How do you become a better steward of success?

In our 7th episode (We cannot believe this is the 7th already!!!), we invited our first ever female guest, Almira Rabaca. In this episode we will talk about her beginnings, struggles, and wins as she walks the unconventional path to Financial Independence.

003 | Building an Accountability Community

Do you sometimes feel afraid to share insights you have just learned because of fear that people will mock you for even trying? You know that they make sense and could help even one person, but the possible rejection wears you down that you keep it to yourself.

This is the importance of having a community, having like-minded people who believes in you, and picks you up because they go through the same challenges as you are. The community is your accountability system. They motivate you to achieve your goals beyond a difficult threshold and celebrate with you in the finish line.

In an online sphere filled with people who only care about personal gains, we still have some people like our guest, Mr. Kenneth Reyes-Lao who passionately started a Pinoy community in hopes of spreading financial literacy, good vibes, and support to those pursuing the unconventional path.

He built a community, a safe zone for people to share their ideas and experiences without being judged nor shamed. You will feel comfortable enough to share your knowledge and challenges, so others may learn and maybe you could learn from them too.
