Episode 11: Systems of Support

Episode 11: Systems of Support

It takes a village to raise a child- is a phrase everyone knows and agrees upon when hearing.  However, systems of support always seems hard to swallow.  Listen to me as I relate the "village" image to systems of support.  An adult needs to stay sane and productive in the work of raising and being in relationship with children.  Having systems in place is the way you protect sanity and obtain goals.

Episode 9: Goal Setting is a Must after Covid

Episode 9: Goal Setting is a Must after Covid

Goal Setting is a must for me as an adult navigating my own life back into the real world post-Covid.  For our children, it is the same.  Being in the classroom the last year after a year of virtual, I realized that I needed to add goal setting to my classroom management.  I have come up with a couple of campaigns :  LEAD, PAW, DANCE since then.  Nonetheless, each campaign was part of my students' goal of living in my classroom during the school day.  It gave us a plan of focus in a world full of a billion options every moment of their life.  Goal setting allows a child to feel victory and self-efficacy in the learning process of real life.  For our 21st century students and children, it's important that we give directions with goal-setting in mind.  We have to be explicit what we want our children to accomplish in the spaces and time that we share together.  It compliments the relationship and strengthens it over time.

Episode 8: Protecting the Partnership Mindset

Episode 8: Protecting the Partnership Mindset

Planning my son's 7th birthday party got me thinking on how important it is to consider your relationships or partnerships first when planning any gathering or celebration.  Being inclusive and mindful of the participants guarentees fun for everyone.  I taught my son that with his nerf gun party instead of the laser tag party he requested.  He had more fun than he thought he would and even asked if he could do it again next year!

Epiode 7: Scheduled Self Time

Epiode 7: Scheduled Self Time

Hey Listeners,

Whether you are a child or an adult in relationship with someone else- it's important to respect the need of self time.  For children, it looks like time away from screens/schedule to play and explore things/thoughts.  For adults, it could look like a plethora of things-depending on your season of life.  Whatever it looks like, it's a necessity-to live a fulfilling life.  Burn out happens when you neglect yourself.  You will never grow aware of what you need until you make time for your self.  Do it- and you will survive the work!

Episode 6: Time Management

Episode 6: Time Management

Yes!  Time Management matters!  Why?  Because, once you are in a relationship with a child, you share time.  If you are on a schedule, then your child is too.  It is important for a child (especially in America) to understand time management early so he/she can be less offended by the "hustle" and be free to live a productive life.  For a lot of working families, the hustle is part of day to day.  Modeling time management for your child while they are young sets them up for success as they grow up.

Episode 5: Know Your Physical Limits

Episode 5: Know Your Physical Limits

Hello listeners!  After my first week of teaching, I am reminded about the physical limits of my body.  It is important, when working with children, that you know the cues and signs your body gives you to tell you what it needs.  You can't do any work without your body!  So, you have to listen to those cues and signs.  Then, care for YOURSELF by giving your body what it needs.  You will be able to endure the work long-term if you can physically keep up.  Have a great day!

Episode 4: An Attitude of Change

Episode 4: An Attitude of Change

Hello Listeners,

An attitude of change must be taught to a child from the beginning for emotional, heart health.  In this episode, I share about my son and how he inspired this episode and lesson.  Change is possible even in the hearts of young children.  In terms of preventing burnout, it is a concept you need your children to buy into so they can work with you- your rules, your expectations, and your schedule.  If both adult and child have positive attitudes towards change, they share healthy dialogue and habits towards better well-being and teamwork.

Episode 2: The Blisters of Life

Episode 2: The Blisters of Life

This episode is an impromptu lesson I experienced with my daughter last night.  Over the course of parenting, I've had many "blisters" talks and really its been so beneficial in raising my kids to be resilient in life.  Bottom Line:  You need to be there and talk with them about the "blisters" of life as they come.  Be present in the moment, but talk them towards their future selves vs. their current situation and pain.  If you do this, you build them up to be stronger people and eventually resilient adults.  Progress and growth takes hard work and sometimes that work comes with pain. Listen if you want to know how to deal with it.
