#94- Life with a Hallucination (with Mary Tompros)

Let's start by taking a big deep breath together! This week, we are joined by mental health advocate and social work student, Mary Tompros. Mary lives with a chronic hallucination, and in this episode, she tells us all about how it started, how she learned to adapt, and just generally what it feels like to never be alone. She shares some of the coping skills that therapy has given her, the different perspectives she’s gained, and just how much she’s grown through the challenging times. Mary also addresses the stigma, emphasizing that people who experience psychosis ARE NOT DANGEROUS. There is a big misconception about having hallucinations, and Mary uses her platform to show the true realities of living with a complex mental illness, including the good times and the bad. I’m so grateful that I got the chance to connect with Mary and learn more about her story. This conversation is extremely informative and deep, in a funny and relatable way. Trigger warning: this episode discusses the topic of suicide, so please check in with yourself before consuming this content. Additionally, I give a brief update about my upcoming break from the podcast! I'm doing okay, I just need some time to breathe, so I will be taking a break from releasing episodes until further notice. #84- Indigenous Mental Health (with Alexia)

Happy Friday! This week on The Revolutionized Mind, we are joined by Alexia who is an Auntie, Community Helper, Indigenous Advocate, Writer, and Dreamer. In this episode, we talk all about Indigenous mental health and well-being. Alexia shares some of the ways that colonial systems have impacted Indigenous folks’ ability to thrive in Canada, the importance of having sovereignty over wellness, and how we can all actively work towards reconciliation on both an individual and systemic level. She also highlights the effects of intergenerational trauma, explains why it’s crucial to move away from a monolithic approach in the mental health space, provides several practical ways that we can support/raise Indigenous voices in our everyday lives, and so much more! This conversation is complex, layered, and uncomfortable at times, but it is so necessary to educate ourselves on the ongoing injustices that exist in our country and learn how we can use our positions of privilege and power to better support Indigenous peoples across Canada. Don't forget to follow us on social media @therevolutionizedmind & @auntie.alexia, and remember to rate, review, and subscribe to the show on whatever platform you're listening on!

Land Acknowledgment: I wish to acknowledge that the entire country of Canada resides on traditional, unceded, or treaty lands of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis people. I strongly believe in the importance of this acknowledgment, so I encourage you to take a moment to reflect on the privileges that we hold today in living and working on these lands. Currently, I am in Newmarket, Ontario which is located on the traditional territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee, and the Wendat peoples and is now home to many diverse First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples. This area of land is covered by Treaty 13 signed with the Mississaugas of the Credit, and the Williams Treaties signed with multiple Mississaugas and Chippewa bands. As a guest and settler on these lands, it is my duty to unlearn inherent colonial systems, actively work towards reconciliation, and to raise Indigenous voices whenever I can.

I am incredibly honoured to be partnering with Lumenus Community Services to help promote their upcoming EMBODY YOGA fundraiser! In this special episode, we are joined by Lisa Nash, a long-time supporter of Lumenus, who is telling us all about this nonprofit organization, how they serve the community, and why she decided to get involved. Participants raise money by collecting pledges and participating in a yoga session. Registration begins at 8am and there will be a light breakfast provided. After the yoga session led by instructors from Afterglow studios, there will be a chance to participate in a silent auction, win raffle prizes, and more! #68- Crisis Intervention and Suicide Prevention (with Laura Bruno)

Happy World Suicide Prevention Day! As many of you know, suicide is a topic that I hold very near and dear to my heart, so this episode means a lot to me. Today's guest, Laura Bruno, is a current Psychotherapist and former Crisis Worker. She has 10+ years of experience working in the field and is very passionate about both crisis intervention and suicide prevention. In this episode, she explains what a crisis is, how we can support someone going through a difficult time, understanding the difference between self-harm and suicidal ideation, and much more. We talk about the role that the supporter plays in crisis and emphasize things like maintaining boundaries, asking the right questions, and knowing the appropriate "next steps". Although this episode doesn't necessarily focus on the individual who may be experiencing suicidal thoughts, please know that you are not alone and there are people out there willing to sit through your pain with you. Trigger warning: suicide and self-harm are discussed in detail in this conversation. Please take a moment to check in with yourself before listening to this episode to ensure that you are in a good headspace to receive this information. A list of resources (not exhaustive) has been provided below in case anything comes up for you during this conversation or just to save for future use. Thank you for being a part of changing the way think about and approach the topic of suicide. #57- Therapy and Human Rights (with Viva Mental Health)

Happy...Tuesday?? As mentioned, this episode was not planned. But, after having a really insightful and informative conversation with Rachel Gersten and Jor-El Caraballo from Viva Mental Health, I felt like this should be released sooner rather than later. What started off as an introduction to their journeys as therapists and business owners turned into a discussion around the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v Wade and the resulting implications that it will have. We talk about maintaining mental health during terrifying times, how you can get more educated, why it's important to get involved, and much more! This is something that impacts all of us and needs to be addressed. I am hoping that this conversation will benefit you in some way and help to promote positive change. Trigger warning: abortion, rape, and Roe v Wade is discussed in this episode. Be sure to follow us on social media @therevolutionizedmind & @vivamentalhealth, and don't forget to rate, review, and subscribe to the show on whatever platform you're listening on! #56- Boundaries: what they are, how to set them, and why we need them (with Patricia DiGiorgio)

This week, we are joined by a Therapist in-training and mental health advocate, Patricia DiGiorgio. In this episode, we talk all about boundaries! Many of us have heard a thing or two about boundary setting but don't really know what that means or how to apply it to our own lives. So, Patricia explains what boundaries are all about, what signs to look out for, how to deal with any consequences involved, negative self-talk, and much more! As human beings living in today's busy world, boundary setting is essential to our overall health and well-being. I hope that this conversation gives you more information about this topic and encourages you to reflect on how you're spending your own time, peace, and energy. #54- My Eating Disorder Journey (with Natalie Collicutt)

Welcome back to another episode of TRM! This week, we are joined by Natalie Collicutt, a female soccer player at Laurentian University. Natalie shares how her eating disorder completely took over her own brain, affected her relationships, and negatively impacted her overall well-being. After struggling with body image for most of her life, she began actively restricting food intake and overexercising whenever she could, both as a result of heavy intrusive thoughts. However, she was in denial about her mental illness for quite some time and was able to play it off in front of loved ones, until she couldn't anymore. Natalie explains what her journey looked like, how her recovery started, and how the pressures of being a female athlete contributed to all of this. This conversation is informative, vulnerable, and relatable! TW: This episode talks about disordered eating, weight loss, overexercising, and negative body image. Please make sure that you are only listening to this when the time is right for you.
