Jennelle

Alex is a Scalp Micropigmentation technician and owner of SkalpX Milwaukee, based out of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He’s been in the SMP industry and providing the service for the past 6 years. His interest in art began at a young age which influenced his love for SMP. At the age of seventeen he became a barber which he did for thirteen years all while doing post-secondary school and hustling. He graduated post-secondary education, no longer wanted to be just a barber and was going to give up hustling. He remembers one night looking up at the ceiling and praying asking God what it was he was going to do to provide for his family. At the time he had a newborn son and wanted to buy a home for his family. That same night he stumbled across an Instagram post of a before and after photo that showed a guy who was bald in one pic and had a hairline in another. That was when he was drawn into the SMP world.  

Dealing with hair loss himself, Alex wanted to use this to help fix his receding hairline but also understood that this service would be an amazing alternative for those dealing with baldness. Alex got certified in 2017 and brought SMP to Milwaukee. He went through many challenges and hindrances the first two years as he tried to start a business with his new skill and build his name in the SMP world. During these challenges, including personal life struggles with alcohol abuse, he gave his life to Christ and things changed from there as he became clear minded and had a new determination. He began to share about SMP around Milwaukee barbershops and barbers started spreading the news of SkalpX by word of mouth. In 2020, SkalpX’s clientele grew significantly, and it has only gone up from there. He has been a part of amazing Pro Teams like 5pm Shadow and was able to travel to network with other well-known SMP artist around the U.S. He continues to push SMP not only in Milwaukee, Wisconsin but in the Midwest area. Stefani Baca is an accomplished business owner born and raised in Nashville, Tennessee. Together with her husband, David Baca Jr., they run two successful production companies Cashew Productions and Mai Tie Productions, along with a content creation and social media marketing agency Mai Tie Media based out Florida.

Don Edward Whyte II hails from the great lakes state of Michigan. Raised on the west side of Detroit and was an outstanding student athlete growing up. Don’s parents kept him busy so he would not succumb to the pressures of crime and all the other obstacles that plagued the youth in urban cities. After high school Don attended Michigan State University but earned his B.S. in business administration from the University of Phoenix.

After college, Don was in corporate America for nearly 15 years. He was a stellar and award winning business developer. In 2016, Don was recognized by club 100 as a top sales leader for a Fortune 50 company. Although Don’s sales leadership and tenacity were unmatched, he wanted something that corporate America could not offer. He took a leap of faith and pursued entrepreneurship and investing full time.

Nearly 5 years ago, after doing some research Don came across Scalp Micropigmentation. Don had his SMP procedure completed by Master artist Chris Herrera. Taryn Quinterri, CEO of Cosmetic Aesthetics, was born in Tucson, Arizona and raised in Phoenix. Immediately after graduation, Taryn began sourcing the best artists and trainers in the world in their respective specialties to learn everything she could from these mentors or icons.

She traveled all over the world to expand her knowledge and has been trained by world renowned professionals in the industry including Nataliya Yeremenko, Toni Belfatto, Alina Soloveva, Linda Dixon, Tina Davies, Doreen Lindgren, Anna Savina, Daria Chuprys, Teryn Darling, Will Anthony, Lanette Scherr, Rhonda Vacanti, Nancy Gagliardo, Joyce Carusoula, Jodi Stoski, Marjorie Winebrenner Grimm, Mary Ritcherson, James Olaya and more.

This motivated Taryn to take her career to the next level, and in 2013 she launched her own business, which is how Cosmetic Aesthetics came to be. She quickly became globally recognized for her work and specializes in Scalp Micropigmentation and/or Tricopigmentation, scar revision/camouflage and hyper realistic eyebrow tattooing. She is also a highly respected trainer, having classes in Scalp color theory, machine and manual eyebrows and SMP/Tricopigmentation.

Taryn hosted the first ever SMP class in the United States and now travels the world to teach SMP and share her wealth of knowledge with her students. Taryn was recognized at the Scalp Guru Meeting of the Minds with an award for Outstanding Contribution to the SMP Industry as well as giving an expert presentation to industry colleagues on Color Theory and the difference between organic and inorganic pigments/inks. She is an active member of the Society of Permanent Cosmetic Professionals and the American Academy of Micropigmentation.

Cosmetic Aesthetics is now located in Taryn’s hometown, Phoenix, Arizona, where her business will continue to grow, as well as her passion for aesthetics. Rodger Ponce De Leon was born in the Bronx NYC and at 2 years old was placed in the foster care system. He moved with his Foster mother to San Francisco when he was 8 years old. Loving the East coast vibe of San Francisco and embracing the mission district. Rodger took an immediate passion for graffiti art, painting murals that told his story of struggle and love for art. Rodger missed the stoops of NYC and freestyling verses with his friends. Having a spirit that wanted to see the world he joined the army at 17. Having survived combat and injuries Rodger came home to SF. Graduated with honors from UC Berkeley and dedicated his time to public service. As much as Rodger felt fulfilled by public service, he missed his artistic spirit. After he was exposed to the world of SMP by one of his brothers from the war who had an amazing scar camouflage, Rodger took his training as a scalp micropigmentation artist as a serious calling and went all in. Training under the expert tutelage of John and Britany Chandler, who encouraged Rodger to develop his skill set. Rodger felt honored to be offered an apprenticeship by SMP Ink Co-founder Jennelle Harris-Martinez who took Rodger to the next level as an artist and fearless entrepreneur, Rodger represents the brand of SMP Ink with outstanding work and an unstoppable desire to push the SMP Industry forward. Joey Saienni (Sigh-Annie) aka Joey Dots is 34 years old, and the owner of Delaware SMP. Joey was born into a negative environment, and at the time of his birth, his mother was only 16 years old, which caused numerous issues throughout his chaotic childhood. Joey struggled his entire life with self esteem, and never felt like he belonged in the Trailer Park, in which he grew up. Joey was an immature kid, but being poor and growing up without a father (who was addicted to drugs) caused Joey to think realistically about life, he couldn’t afford to sugarcoat reality. Raised by his single grandmother for the most part, He had total freedom, no rules, and no discipline. Desperate for a better life because he hated being broke like most people in his family, he decided to change his statistical trajectory, and focus on getting out of the Trailer Park and start living the “good life”. so after graduating high school in 2005, he joined the Navy, and received an Honorable Discharge, started working as a security guard; then used his G.I. bill to go to college full-time for the next seven years earning his bachelors degree, and a masters degree in information systems technology, where he later used to get his job at corporate americas biggest bank, JP Morgan Chase. Joey learned a lot during his banking days, and became a Toastmaster, and  Competitive Public Speaker, where he competed in The International Speech Competition in 2017, 2018. Ready for a change, Joey was fed up with corporate thugging and started Delaware SMP in 2018. When Jonathan Gerow was a small kid in his hometown of Rochester NY, he developed a strong passion for art and music. He followed in his parents footsteps as they were both lovers of the arts and music. When he was a teenager Jonathan, self-taught, he learned how to play the guitar and became an accomplished artist at his school. As Jonathan matured and moved into his early twenties he decided to follow that creative passion and became a renowned tattoo artist.

Around that time he received a heavy blow when he learned that his beloved mother was diagnosed with cancer. She was everything to him. Whilst trying to establish himself as a creative artist with a strong following, Jonathan managed to tear himself away at every opportunity and spent every spare moment with his Mom whilst she was receiving chemotherapy.

Jonathan first leaned of scalp micropigmentation during this tumultuous time of his life and was fascinated by its potential. There was only one other company that was doing SMP at the time; “I looked at what others were doing in those days and thought the final result could be more realistic” says Gerow. “The chemo patients that I had seen were losing their hair and some of them were devastated. This had a massive impact on me. After my Mom passed I dreamt about how I could’ve help them and my Mom. I think it was my way of grieving for my Mom and following my passion.”

Jonathan decided that he needed to broaden his horizons and teamed up with HIS Hair Clinic from Europe to expand his craft. HIS Hair Clinic, who at that time were the inventors of SMP and were the ‘best of the best’. Jonathan explains further “The SMP professionals at the time were doing more of a shading and at the time is was so new that I took it upon myself to turn up the heat and develop a serious art form that observers would never recognize, as it would be so realistic and blend right in.”

Upon returning to the US he spent time working in all the major city’s his first 6 years years and in the fall of 2016 he co-founded Gerow Hair Ink with master barber Erik Roberto.

To date Jonathan has completed over 7000 clients and Gerow Hair Ink, on average services up to 140 clients a month.

Ana James (AJ) is the owner of Inkd SMP, one of the leading Scalp Micropigmentation studios in Melbourne Australia. In 2019 she started off as a solo artist at her business INKD by AJ and quickly grew a reputation for her ultra realistic technique, professionalism and fun loving personality. AJ is known for her light hearted laughs and both unapologetic yet relatable social media content. She knows laughter and positive vibes are contagious and is a big believer in the Law of Attraction - when you put out good energy, you get it back in return.

In 2017 Ana experienced the tragic loss of her fiancé in a fatal accident, which completely changed her outlook on life. Instead of spiraling into negativity she was able to build a new life due to her strength and confidence in herself. Having made it through a dark time herself, she's always been genuine about her experiences and hopes to inspire others to live more openly and freely. She attests that a positive mindset and unwavering motivation are the key to her success, as well as having a more laid back and authentic approach to business that clients appreciate. While others try to step back from the spotlight and client relations, AJ believes that her direct and hands on approach is what's made her a standout and success in the growing Australian industry.

Despite being closed for 7 months during one of the strictest and longest covid lockdowns, she built her business up to a team of 3 artists and rebranded as Inkd SMP by 2022. She now also serves as a trainer and mentor to new and upcoming SMP artists. Her advice to other artists : In a world where everyone tries to fit a certain perfect mould, don't stay in a lane. Create your own lane, show your individuality, work hard and be authentically you.

Mav Rico is considered to be one of the finest and notable SMP artists in Asia. He is the man behind PROSCALP, located in the Philippines. He is well-known for producing hyper-realistic looking and very detailed SMP work. His extreme versatility in the craft is also what he is recognized for—May it be creating beautiful feathered and soft hairline or edge-up with shaved line effect. Demanding and painstaking SMP cases such as FUT and FUE scars, alopecia, female density, botched SMP and full beard micropigmentation.

Having started his SMP career in 2013 Ollie Hughes has become renowned as one of the most experienced practitioners in the world. As one of the innovators of the natural hairline; Ollie decided to name his company “Appear Natural” in homage to his work ethic. Brycen Veals started off working at a national law firm being head of sales and client retention, in 2019 his two business partners approached him about starting a digital marketing agency. At that time they had already had 10 years of marketing experience and needed Brycen’s help because they were introverted and knew he was very outgoing and loved talking to people. In the fall of 2018, Rick Mac was diagnosed with stage 2, large B-Cell Lymphoma. Cancers (like Lymphoma) require chemotherapy, bone marrow medication, and radiation therapy to overcome this deadly disease.

Although Rick was strong enough to stare cancer in the face & defeat it, the harsh drugs & constant chemotherapy caused hair loss & balding as a side effect.

Rick was determined to find a solution, he yearned to begin his life again, a second chance not to be wasted. It was this loss that became the massive motivation driving Rick to master Scalp Micropigmentation as a solution not only for his patients but for himself.

Kate Dawes IAT, qualified Hairdresser, Trichologist and Scalp Micropigmentation Artist, is the

founding company Director of both Medical Hair Restoration Australia (MHRA) and Foli Sim.

MHRA is a company that provides hair loss solutions via Trichology consultation, diagnosis and treatment plans. Kate Dawes is a qualified Trichologist with the International Association of Trichologists and provides nutritional support for those with hair loss. Kate’s initial interest of hair loss began in her award-winning hairdressing career, over 35 years ago. Coupled with studying Bachelor of Health Science in Nutritional Medicine, Trichology was the obvious next step. During her career, she consulted for and worked alongside Australia’s leading hair transplant doctor, Dr Jennifer Martinick and managed the clinic, Martinick Hair. It was here that she first became introduced to Scalp Micropigmentation.

In 2012, Martinick Hair bought in a trainer from GoldenEye South Korea to train some of the staff in Trichopigmentation and Kate joined in. Foli Sim was born out of this in 2015 and now has grown into 3 clinics, Perth, Melbourne and Sydney. In 2017 Kate completed a Masterclass with Matt Iulo and Aris Azar of Scalp Micro USA. Juan Collado, a banker by trade, began his Scalp Micropigmentation journey in Toronto, Canada in 2016.

Later that year, he took additional training courses in NYC, before opening up his own practice, ‘Ink Barbers’, in Queens, NY. The first ever in the borough.

Victor Ibarra started losing his hair at the age of 19 and with it, his self-esteem. Having tried many different hair products, remedies, and hair styles to cover up his receding hairline with no success. Billy DeCola was born and raised in sunny St. Petersburg, Florida and he later moved to Miami where he attended college while working as a bartender in some of the most popular Miami Beach nightclubs. After living in Miami for several years, Billy moved to Japan where he worked in video production while studying Japanese at the prestigious “Naganuma – The Tokyo School of Japanese Language.”

Billy lived in Japan for 8 years before moving back to Florida in 2009 when he started his tattoo career at the world famous Miami Ink Tattoo Studio in Miami Beach. There he apprenticed under world renowned artist and close friend Ami James. The two later appeared on TLC’s hit reality TV series “NY Ink” which was filmed at Wooster Street Social Club in NYC and aired in 186 countries worldwide. When the show was a wrap Billy moved to Vancouver, B.C. where he now calls home. He tattooed at various studios before opening his own, private tattoo studio and laser removal clinic.

Billy’s path to offering SMP services and training started with over a decade spent in the tattoo industry. “I took the skills and mechanics that I was taught as a tattooer and I applied them to Scalp Micropigmentation. The transition wasn’t difficult at all but it take a little time and effort to master the craft as would any other genre of tattooing,” said Billy.

At the time of this interview Mike and Scott were still operating under Hairline Ink, they have since rebranded themselves as Magic Ink SMP.

With 13 years of combined experience in the industry, Mike “Magic” Muszynski and Scott “Ruger” Ryan have embarked on their next venture. Mike started in the industry 10 years ago when he experienced the benefits of SMP for himself. Mike was trained by world renowned practitioner’s Paul Clark and Simon Lane of Brandwood Clinic in the UK. Mike has since established himself in the industry as an award winning top practitioner with over 9,000 treatments under his belt. Scott was introduced to the SMP industry after he experiencing hair loss and thinning. After having his SMP treatment done by “Magic Mike”, Scott reached out to him a month later to see how he could get into the industry. Scott was trained by Mike one-on-one, for 3 months before taking on his own clients. Since then, Mike and Scott have worked side by side and developed a close friendship. As of the 1st of the year they have now formed their own clinic Magic Ink SMP, one of Chicago’s most prolific SMP studios.
