Grace Berg: Drake Basketball
Grace Berg is and has been a certified bucket getter. A former Indianola Indian she helped lead them to state all 4 years. She ended with 1,784 pts, the schools all-time leading scorer. The Indians ended with a 86-12 record over that span. As you can imagine a lot of schools wanted her, but Missouri was her choice. Admittedly, she may have been premature with that decision and now brought her talents to Drake. It didn’t take long for her to make an impact as she gathered up MVC Newcomer of the Year and All-MVC First team awards last season.

Derrick Dengler has only been coaching for 10 years, with 5 of those years have been spent as a head coach. He’s already made multiple trips to the state tournament and has even cut down there nets last season! Brett Watson: Waukee Northwest Boy's Basketball
Coach Watson is one of the great young coaches in our state. An absolute stud in High School, Brett ended his HS career 5th all time in scoring. After a pending a redshirt year at Morningside he then spent 4 years at Wayne State where he continues to get buckets. He knew he wanted to be a coach since 3rd grade so the next steps were easy for him as he transitioned into the coaching world. His journey is a fun one and actually credits is biggest growth as a coach to his time calling plays on the gridiron! Let's go!

Garrett has been a staple in Des Moines as he made the decision to continue playing basketball at Drake after high school. Not recruited a lot, Drake was one of a few D1 schools that offered him a PWO spot. When Darian Devries took over he didn’t know much about him, but said he had a spot on the team for him if he wanted it. That’s worked out for both sides!

AJ Green: UNI Panthers
If you are a college basketball fan, AJ Green needs no introduction... we are going to give him one anyway! AJ is a State Champ from Cedar Falls High School and was a Top 100 HS recruit in the country coming out of high school. With plenty of opportunities for places to play, AJ chose to stay home and play for the Panthers. In his freshman campaign, he won MVC Freshman of the Year. His second season, he won MVC Player of the Year. Before last season got cut short due to injury, AJ was on the Naismith Watchlist for top players in the country! Kenyon Murray didn’t start his basketball journey until very late compared to others around him, but that didn’t stop him from becoming Mr. Basketball in the state of Michigan his Senior year. He wound up in Iowa City where he was standout for the Tom Davis lead Hawkeye team. Even though Kenyon will always be a Hawkeye, his 2 sons following in Dad’s footsteps and playing basketballs Iowa currently makes it a lot easier!

Michael Admire has been strategic about every move he’s made in his career. From choosing Des Moines over warmer locations to essentially creating his position at Drake. Bryan Martin - Head Men's Basketball Coach at Coe College

Chad Jilek - Head Girl's Basketball Coach at Johnston High School
Coach Jilek's passion for coaching is unrivaled. Originally from Mason City, he was a multi sport athlete and his first love was baseball. Like a lot of our guests he got his basketball coaching start by chance and necessity. One of his strategies is to grow a program from the younger athletes to create total buy in. It seems to be working as Johnston was the 2020 class 5a Girls champions and Coach Jilek was awarded the All- Iowa Girl's Basketball Coach of the Year!

Doug McDermott ranks 5th all time in scoring in NCAA history and is one of 3 players with 3,000 points and 1,000 rebounds. His team at Ames High, where he teamed up with Harrison Barnes, was one of the best to come through the state of Iowa. As usual, we talk to Doug about everything from childhood to his brand new NBA coach! He has a great story of hard work and knowing where he wanted to go. Justin Ohl's coaching career started under Dr. Tom Davis at Drake University. Then went on to coach a team with a 28-5 record and a 5 seed in the NCAA tournament. Bob Amsberry - Wartburg College Women's Head Basketball Coach
Coach Amsberry had a very unique story with multiple "rise to the top" moments. He joined a struggling Rockford College program that lost 70 straight games and turned them into a consistent above .500 team. Then did the same with an average team at Wartburg College and created a perennial power house. All from a guy who had really never thought about coaching! Brooks McKowen - Head Men's Basketball Coach at Upper Iowa University
Brooks McKowen is a great friend of the podcast and a former AAU teammate, college teammate and college roommate of AV. He's the most prolific scorer in Iowa High School Basketball history and current head coach of Upper Iowa University. He was also on the UNI staff when they upset the Kansas Jayhawks in the NCAA tournament in 2010. He has some great insights about that and coaching on the Division II level in Iowa.

Kayla Waskow - Coe College Head Women's Basketball Coach
Kayla has a great story. Her 8th grade year in Dunkerton, IA her Scholl didn't even have a varsity basketball team. When they got that figured out, she became a great talent and eventually committed to play for Coe College. She played under Randi Henderson, wife of former guest Duez Henderson, and became an elite player. She left for a year and came back as an assistant, eventually taking over the head job. Wartburg College Hall of Famer Jason Steege. Jason is the current Assistant Coach for the Men's Basketball team. In his playing days, Jason was the definition of a sharp shooter. He holds records for 3 pointers made and currently ranks 6th on Wartburg's all-time scoring list. Which obviously made him a natural fit on the Shooters Touch!
