Leadership Lessons: Banda Singh Bahadur

Welcome to a well overdue episode of the podcast! It's 2024 and I wanted to change things. New format, new content, new podcast :-)

There are lots of long form podcasts now so, I wanted to change things up and give some value back to the community with some short, inspiring, digestible content.

In this Episode I talk about Banda Singh Bahadur a significant Sikh in Sikh History, somebody we can learn from about leadership, resilience and faith.

Here I give some background to who Banda Singh Bahadur was, what he stood for achieved and endured during his death. There are some key takeaways from his life that we can directly reflect upon and make changes to live a rich life of value.

Let me know what you think and what future topics/content you would like me to cover.

Stay blessed,

Avtar Singh - The Sikh Coach

Welcome to The Sikh Coach Podcast!

Happy Vaisakhi - Khalsa Sajna Divas (Birth of the Khalsa!).  Wishing everyone is celebrating and keeping in high spirits.  No doubt there will be a lot of Nagar Kirtan's taking place (processions), I know I am very excited to attend our local one.  It has been long overdue to be able to celebrate together.

In Episode 21, I catch up with Champion Boxer, Dylan "The Natural" Cheema!  I was super excited for this podcast as Dylan was crowned BOXXER Series lightweight champion via a unanimous decision victory over Rylan Charlton in the final in Coventry on Saturday 16th April 2022 - a day that will go down in history!

Dylan has an incredible work ethic, grounded, yet confident in his capabilities, focused and an all round great guy.  It was an absolute pleasure to have him on the podcast.  I am sure a lot of people will leave this podcast episode feeling inspired and ever so proud of what Dylan has achieved but with a deeper understanding about the sacrifice and dedication that is needed to excel in something you are really passionate about.  No doubt Dylan has much much further to go yet, he is only 25 and has conquered the Kickboxing world at a very young age and will surely make an impressive legacy in his Boxing career which has just begun - Godspeed.

Meanwhile, more about our guest...

“Gurcharan Roopra was born and raised in Nairobi, Kenya. The serene environs of his native place left a lasting impact and he became attracted to nature at an early age. After graduating in automotive engineering, Gurcharan lived and worked in the UK for ten years where he sorely missed the space and freedom of the bush. By 2012 he made up his mind and returned to Kenya for good. Return to the bush coincided with him developing an interest in photography. What started off as a hobby took deep roots in his mind and soon his life started revolving around wildlife and nature photography. Time and the bush were great mentors where he developed and honed his skills to become one of the most noted nature photographers in Africa.

The more time Gurcharan spent in nature, the more passionate he has become towards Mother Earth and the many fellow beings on it. He is committed to the cause of a pristine earth and has devoted his time and energy to many conservation causes in Kenya. He is happy for the fact that his images have come useful for many conservation projects. One thing is for sure, there are many more exciting things to come from this gifted photographer!

15. The Washing Machine Project - Navjot Sawhney

15. The Washing Machine Project - Navjot Sawhney

15. The Washing Machine Project - Navjot Sawhney

Welcome to the last episode of The Sikh Coach Podcast for 2020, wishing you are all keeping safe and well. In this episode I catch up with Navjot Sawhney who is the founder of The Washing Machine Project.

Navjot is a living example of how you can take an idea and make it a reality. If the idea is for a true social purpose, it can change people’s lives for the better, forever.

The Washing Machine Project’s mission is “to alleviate the burden of hand-washing clothes for everyone, everywhere”. They are a charitable organisation so are dependent on donations and corporate funding so do support this great initiative.

The project is set out to create a single, standalone, off the grid washing solution that will be affordable, portable and accessible for everyone, everywhere.

Did you know
* 70% of the world’s population do not have access to a washing machine
* Women constitute the majority of the world’s poor population and often carry the burden of washing
* Some people spend up to 20 hours per week hand washing clothes
* Hand washing clothes increases the likelihood of skin irritation and chronic back pain

Nav Sawhney is the founder of The Washing Machine Project. Nav was born and brought up in London but his family are from unpartitioned India. During the 1947 Indian Independence, Nav’s father and his family fled their home from what now is Pakistan with only the clothes on their backs. This has always been the foundations of why he wants to help people fleeing conflict.

Whether it’s building lifesaving cookstoves in rural India, being a trustee of an international development charity, Engineers Without Borders UK (EWB-UK), building clean water systems for an orphanage in Namibia or volunteering my time at a local homeless shelter for migrants in London. He has always been passionate about helping others, with a particular interest in International Development.

“The Washing Machine Project’s mission propels me every waking hour: to help women and children who are hand-washing the clothes of 70% of the global population. The idea for “Divya”, the innovative hand-cranked washing machine, was born out of compassion for my neighbour Divya in India, who spent 20 hours a week suffering joint pains and skin irritation from hand-washing clothes on her hands and knees during my humanitarian work with Engineers Without Borders UK (EWB-UK) in 2017”

11. Judgement & Criticism in the Sikh Community - Gurumustuk Singh - SikhNet.com

Episode 11 – Judgement & criticism in the Sikh Community

Welcome to The Sikh Coach Podcast, in this episode I catch up with Gurumustuk Singh the CEO & Founder of SikhNet.com, we talk about judgement & criticism in the Sikh Community.

Being a second generation Sikh, born to parents who took on the Sikh faith from Christian/Jewish backgrounds. He has experienced life growing up as a “white” Sikh in America, getting educated in India and taking SikhNet on it’s 24 year journey. No doubt he has faced judgements and criticism from society as a whole but also, within the Sikh community.  We talk about his experiences and insights and how his journey as a Sikh has evolved. Also, how to value each individuals journey as it is unique, and how we can start to change our perspective to accommodate all and truly be inclusive.

Gurumustuk Singh Started SikhNet.com in 1996 as a teenager out of high school during the beginning of the Web to bring much needed information to Sikh youth at the time. He has led the development and direction of SikhNet since it’s inception. SikhNet is now one of the oldest and the largest Sikh portals reaching millions a year.

SikhNet has evolved to become an innovative media company.  Among many other projects, he introduced SikhiWiki, Gurbani Media Center, The Karma Game, Audio Stories for Kids and the Youth Online Film Festival, which continue to serve the Sikh community today.

10. The Project Punjab - Rajveer Kaur

10. The Project Punjab - Rajveer Kaur

Welcome to Episode 10. The Project Punjab.

Wishing that you are all safe and well.  We have an exciting episode for you with Rajveer kaur from The Project Punjab (@theprojectpunjab on Instagram).  They are creating an amazing documentary to showcase the lesser known traditional folk dance forms, you can see a teaser of the documentary on youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MHo1Oo7eD48.  As we speak to Rajveer Kaur this is just the start of a journey to promote the rich history and heritage of Punjab.

More about the project;

The Project Punjab

It’s more than bhangra.

It’s more than what Bollywood showcases it to be.

It’s more than the stereotypes.

In the wake of uninterrupted flak that Punjab receives due to drug abuse, perpetual political unrest, unemployment, poverty, water issues and so on, there’s a dire need to revisit Punjab’s vibrant culture and colourful heritage to remind everyone the ecstasy that Punjab is. Punjab is more than Bhangra, more than any stereotypes and more than what  Bollywood showcases it to the world. It is time to create awareness amongst youngsters about the fast dying rich culture to take pride in literature, tradition of folklore and arts of the land of five rivers.

The Project Punjab documents the lesser known traditional folk dance forms which were once popular in pre-partition Punjab. We met with families who moved from west Punjab during partition with a bag full of stories and narratives which are lost with time. Although the youngest folk dance form - Bhangra is widely popular within India as well as overseas, the fact remains that it is not the only Punjabi folk dance form. Bhangra is a beautiful amalgamation of many old folk dances which were popular in Sanjha Punjab (Pre-partition Punjab). The limited documentation of families and people who are keeping these traditions alive and the dance forms in its original state, propelled us to document them before it’s too late.

The film documents the abundance and variety of vigorous folk dances and thrilling folk music & songs of punjab. Travelling through the length and breadth of Punjab region, the film takes you through a journey which is a unique tryst with tradition creating a beautiful symphony of Punjab - which is an emotion.

Do support the project by sharing on social media through your networks or by contacting Rajveer Kaur to find out how else you can support.

Take care and stay blessed.

8. Taraki - Male Mental Health

8. Taraki - Male Mental Health

Hello and welcome all to Episode 8. Taraki - Men's Mental Health Awareness.

Mental health problems affect both men and women, but not in equal measure.  In England, around 1 in 8 men have a common mental health problem.  However, men may be reluctant to seek support for their mental health or disclose mental health problems to loved ones.

In 2013, 6,233 suicides were recorded in the UK for people aged 15 and older. Of these, 78% were male.

Taraki (Defined as progress-movement to an improved or more developed state), an organisation who works with the Punjabi communities to create spaces where all individuals can access mental health awareness, education, and support to better care for themselves and one-another.  They focus on a number of areas; creating social spaces to talk about mental health, university projects, talks at faith centres, male mental health, research and carrying out training.

In this episode we catch up with Amardeep Singh and Sandev Panaser, both coordinators from Taraki who specifically focus on men's mental health initiatives.
