TSAP S03E03: Jason Graves -Composer (The Dark Pictures Anthology, DC's Swamp Thing)
Sam Hughes speaks with jason Graves about how his career developed, mentors, inspirations, workflow and more! Two-time British Academy Award-winning composer Jason Graves is renowned for his textural concept scores and innovative orchestration in cinematic narrative games such as Moss, Tomb Raider, Far Cry Primal, Until Dawn, The Order: 1886 and Dead Space. His repertoire is truly diverse, from aleatoric and sweeping orchestral journeys in space, to haunting soundscapes in historical, gothic and supernatural worlds, to manipulating ancient instruments in a stone age natural environment. Most recently Graves composed the charming and beautifully animated storybook adventure Moss, winner of Best Music for an Indie Game at the 2019 G.A.N.G. Awards/Game Develpers Conference, as well as scoring the interactive drama The Dark Pictures Anthology and music for the DC Universe TV series Swamp Thing. TSAP S03E02: Matt Morton -Composer (APOLLO 11, The Last Steps, Dinosaur 13)
Sam chats with composer, Matt Morton about his career so far and working on the incredible documentary APOLLO 11 that uses archival footage to look at the Apollo 11 mission to land on the moon led by commander Neil Armstrong and pilots Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins. "When Matt Morton first learned he’d been given the opportunity to score NEON's documentary Apollo 11, his first thoughts were, how can I put such a momentous event in our nation’s history into music, and how can I make my attempt unique? The score the composer created went on to win him a 2019Critics’ Choice Documentary Award. The documentary only uses archival footage from the 1969 mission to the moon, so Morton deliberately decided to only use sounds and instrumentation that existed during that era, but still set out to make the music sound futuristic. The synthesizer was born in the 1960s, which the composer utilized heavily, to create an avant-garde sound. “I looked at my music as being able to play the role of bridging the gap between 2019 and 1969. Even though I’m using dated instruments, I think it comes off as a bridge to modern people because I’m using modern musical idioms to communicate with them,” says Matt. A distinct symbolic element that Morton included in a cue was a chopped-up sonogram clip of his niece’s heartbeat, which he says is a reminder to our currently divided nation that we possess the ability to triumph, when we choose to unite. Please let me know if you might be interested in speaking with Matt Morton about his unique approach to scoring the historic Apollo 11 mission. TSAP S03E01: Jacob Yoffee & Roahn Hylton - Composers (The Age of A.I., Sherwood, Best Shot)
TSAP S03E01 OUT NOW! In the first episode of the year (and decade 😲), we kick off season 3 with composers Jacob Yoffee and Roahn Hylton. In this episode Sam discusses with them about scoring YouTube's The Age of A.I. hosted by Robert Downey Jr.,how they began working together, how to compose as a duo, as well as how their contrasting backgrounds of hip-hop and classical lend to each other. "The composers each have their own musical specialty—Jacob has classical/jazz roots and Roahn has a hip-hop/pop background. Their expertise in opposing genres allows them to broaden the palette on any score they collaborate on and has also enabled them to have a better understanding of one another’s musical sensibilities. For The Age of A.I., Jacob and Roahn were originally asked to deliver a signature sci-fi sound, which is electronic-heavy. After their initial approach, the duo and their collaborators quickly realized that this wasn’t the right fit for the series. After a great deal of experimentation, they landed on a sound that was more human and organic. The resulting score is mostly orchestral and acoustic chamber music, with some electronic elements and perfectly speaks to the message of the docuseries."
