#28 How To Digital Detox

A short and sweet chat with Megan Swan from @meganswanwellness about the best ways to detox from all things digital. I've been mostly digitally detoxing this summer as I downshift from my previous workload and look towards the next chapter of life for myself and my family. It's been wonderful but repatterining really does take practice. As with anything, Megan reminds us that the magic happens with small shifts. Wishing you a wonderful summer and we'll see you in September for season 2 of The Grit + Grace Podcast @fallonpublishing

#26 How To Have Grit

#26 How To Have Grit

Hi and thanks for joining. Today I'll talk about the three elements of grit that contribute to resiliency: self-soothing, self-regulating, and self-delaying. Resiliency helps us arrive at the next chapter of life feeling nourished and excited, not depleted and drained. And grit helps us get there.

We often think of grit as this big mud-covered masculine energy that is forcing its way up a hill aggressively. But grit can play a vital role in helping us ride the waves with ease.

#25 How To Change Your Worth

#25 How To Change Your Worth

I am constantly amazed at the narratives I hear from women about themselves that are not their own. I’m this. I’m that. I’m too old. I’m not good enough. I’m not qualified enough. I don’t have enough education / credentials for that… Ahem. Said who?

Yes. It starts with self-inquiry. That’s step one. You have to cut the fantasy out of your own story first. That, to me, is the highest form of self-care and self-love... it is super uncomfortable and awkward. It’s hard but it’s worthy work. What is it?

⚡️ Shadow Work
⚡️ Journaling
⚡️ Inquiry-Driven Coaching
⚡️ Trigger Point Work

Trigger Point Work - taking active steps to question what you ‘know to be true’ in your own story. It starts with being honest with yourself about where / how you get triggered. That’s usually where you’re holding ideas / feelings that you’d be better served by dropping, hard.

Once you’ve done all that awesome and awkward work… let it go, Elsa. Other people’s opinions of you are none of your business. They are nothing more than transparent projections of what that person desires anyway.

Other than cases of clear abuse or prejudice, people typically don’t villainize others unless they envy them. So take it as a compliment, own those skinny jeans mama, and rock on. (References: Shadow Work, Jungian Somatics.)

Likewise, watch out for getting lost in flattery. As Georgia O’keefe said, “compliments and criticisms go down the same drain.” You are neither good nor bad, you are wholly human and that, gorgeous, is enough. In fact it’s plenty.

Takeaway - it doesn’t matter who you are in someone else’s story, it matters that you are the leading lady in yours. Have the best day lovely ladies. 💛 Get in touch for more hello@fallonpublishing.ca // @fallonpublishing.ca // fallonpublishing.ca

#24 How To Do Boundaries

#24 How To Do Boundaries

This week on the show that has no name with @meganswanwellness…

B is for boundaries and boundaries are there to protect us all, especially ourselves from… ourselves. Boundaries also help us identify where previous overstepping has been taking place in the form of resistance (to these boundaries) by others. That’s step one.

Two… triggers. notice how you react when parts of your story (or new boundaries) are challenged. What are you taking offence to? Can you create space between the thing that offends you and your reaction to it? Ask yourself, is it trigger, or is it truth? Can you change your perspective to think of triggers as emotional feedback for the parts of your story that need to be challenged, changed, or dropped.

Let’s go further…

Then, appreciation. Appreciate your triggers. They are there to show you where you need more love, compassion, patience, trust, and meditation. They are love notes in disguise. And finally, “cut the cord”, sage, buy some crystals, do your thing to let that shit go. As my five year old says, don’t hate, mediate.

Other takeaways and snippets:

Notice where stress responses pop up for you in your body

You don’t have to play with your kids all the time, seriously

Take cold showers or plunge into water when you’re stressed, it works

You are not the project manager of everyone else’s life, focus on your beautiful self

#1 How To Do Discipline

#1 How To Do Discipline

Episodes with music are only available on Spotify.

The Grit: missing social engagements and important events with friends and family.

The Grace: cultivating your craft, pursuing your heart's desires, and carving out a life for yourself as an artist.

Episode #1 on The Grit + Grace Podcast, "How To Do Discipline", with Whistler-based Artist & Natural Ink Maker, Kassandra Turmel is all about what it takes to create a life you love.

Kassandra discusses the real work that goes into building a career as a creative and explains why self-reflection is so important. She's a successful case study on what happens when you do the work, show up for yourself, and interestingly, take time away from your craft with intention to be inspired by other endeavors.

I especially love her answer to a young artist about how to get started. Don't miss this episode. Find Kassandra @kassandraturmelart and kassandraturmelart.com and follow me on IG @gritandgracepodcast

#20 How To Be Brave

#20 How To Be Brave

The Grit: living a story that isn't serving you. The Grace: being brave enough to change it. It starts with owning your story and it entails learning how to lead with your vulnerability rather than being ashamed of it.

On Episode #20 of The Grit + Grace Podcast, "How To Be Brave", I get to speak to a real gem of a human. Alwynn Taylor, Pilates Instructor + Owner of Taylor'd Motion (Digital Studio) walks us through her non-linear life, meeting bodies where they are at, movement as therapy and a metaphor for life, the need for tension in all areas of our lives, and of course, imposter syndrome.

What you'll learn during this podcast:

- How to be brave enough to begin again,

- the importance of community,

- what the heck tensegrity means, and

- that Alwynn makes me cry.

PLEASE NOTE - I will also add that we touch on a topic that made us realize we need to have another important chat: systemic racism in Pilates as an industry and within studios and their hiring practices.

We put a pin in this topic because we were / are both out of our depth without the input of voices from men and women of color. Alwynn and I are not letting this go but it is not our story to tell. We are going to come back to you with another episode when we have connected with the right people who will share their experiences on how this has impacted them as movement instructors. Importantly, they will share what we can do as a whole to be better, do better, act better, speak better.

#16 How To Believe It's All Rigged In Your Favour (Day 12 of the 21 Day "Clear The Way" Project)

#16 How To Believe It's All Rigged In Your Favour (Day 12 of the 21 Day "Clear The Way" Project)

"It's all rigged." - The Fates

The following is an excerpt from "Clear The Way", the 21 day project by Fallon Publishing and The Grit + Grace Podcast to get unstuck. To learn more and to join the next group, visit @gritandgracepocast, fallonpublishing.ca or email hello@fallonpublishing.ca

Amor fati is a Latin phrase that loosely translates to "love of fate" or "love of one's fate". We owe its popularity to German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. It is used to describe an attitude in which one sees everything that happens in one's life, including suffering and loss, as good or, at the very least, necessary.

Can you imagine such a thing?

Now, I am very care not to dip my toes in the rivers of toxic positivity (which is a term I am grateful to have learned about recently from my brilliant sister) but I do invite you to this notion just for a moment.

This may seem mega-esoteric and woowoo but I invite you to suspend your disbelief — just for a moment — and consider that everything might actually be rigged in your favour. If that sounds too wild, then ask yourself if you have ever looked back on a tough situation and thought, wow I’m actually quite glad that happened because [insert the amazing thing that happened].

The Stoics believed in The Fates – or Moirai – who were a group of three sister-goddesses who assigned individual destinies to mortals at birth. Their names are Clotho (the Spinner), Lachesis (the Alloter) and Atropos (the Inflexible).

Can we just marinate on this please? The stoics — who were huge believers in accepting one’s fate without fuss believed that their destinies were woven by a trio of goddesses. Not only did they accept this, they celebrated it.

Exercise: lean into the idea of amor fati and pick two tough or inconvenient experiences that you are now thankful for. Write them down. Repeat them to yourself. And then tell them to your partner or a friend. Next, pick a new, current situation or attitude that is nagging at you or causing frustration. How would things change for if you believed that it was all rigged in your favour?

From Megan:

Feeling stuck and stagnant in your life? I always ask my clients what are they consuming on a DAILY basis?  Can we make it more high energy?  The ingredients, the food choices, the percentage of plants, the information, the connections.  Shifting our diet towards food options that are full of LIFE can really shift our mood, motivation and mindset.  It can help us think more creatively, show up more fully each day to work, and also respect our own boundaries to ensure all of our systems (especially the mind) down shift each evening into a true rest and restore mode.

I am a Wellness and Mindset Coach specializing in detoxification from refined sugars, gluten, alcohol, dairy, and processed foods.  Guiding women to reevaluate their relationship with these everyday toxins in order to rediscover their true sense of self and natural energy.

Specialties:  Plant-based Living, Detoxification, Mindful Practices, Stress Management, Yoga, + Meditation.

My Sustainable Integrative Wellness Approach dives deep to provide an energetic overall of your diet, mindset, work/life balance and lifestyle so we can find a sustainable and integrative solution that works perfectly for you.

________________________________

Megan is currently looking to fill two spots in her Women’s Wellness Circle that starts Friday the 15th. Here are 3 reasons you should join:

1. We will be detoxing the things we don’t want in our lives and learning to eat intuitively.

2. We will be focusing on building healthy habits, mindset and positive energy.  This will include spiritual and movement practices to incorporate in your routine to feel more grounded and in turn more energetic.

3. We will be designing our personal lifestyle that makes us feel balanced, supported, and free to make choices that work for us, not against us.

https://www.meganswanwellness.com/womenswellnesscircle

Her two tips for cultivating mindfulness for 2021 are:

1. Establish a morning routine that truly supports you to feel aligned with your energy, pace in life and goals.  First step is to wake up at the same time every day allowing you to honour your biorhythms and ample time for intention setting and self care.

2. Establish buffers around digital influence/screen time to foster time for deep work, and allow the nervous system to downgrade property when you go ‘offline’.  For example, no phone in the bedroom, no work while you are eating, etc.  A few rules that help you protect you ability to concentrate deeply and truly relax before bed and while nourishing yourself.

Bonus: High Energy Morning Drinks instead of Coffee:

  1. Matcha latte with ginger powder + coconut or oat milk.
  2. Strong Chai Tea with cinnamon sticks.
  3. Earl Grey Tea with 2 drops of Bergamot oil.
  4. Creamy Cacao Shake:  1 banana, ½ avocado, 2 cups unsweetened almond milk, tbsp quality cacao powder, tbsp cacao nibs.

#12 How Long Are You Going To Wait? - Special Episode (21 Day Project - Day 3)

#12 How Long Are You Going To Wait? - Special Episode (21 Day Project - Day 3)

“How long are you going to wait before you demand the best for yourself and in no instance bypass the discriminations of reason? You have been given the principles that you ought to endorse, and you have endorsed them." Epictetus

If we let go of the verbiage that we feel we have to constantly apologize for, what would remain? What would happen if we let go of the manufactured constructs we judge our worth against? Whether it’s your age or your career or personal relationships, who would you be if you didn’t let those things influence your concept of self? And as Epictetus reminds us, what the heck are you waiting for?

Creative Coaching Question: how old would you be if you didn’t know your age?

  • How would things change for me if I didn’t know what car I drove?
  • Or what job I had?
  • Or what city I lived in?
  • How would I feel if I didn’t know what I looked like?
  • How would I act if I didn’t know what looked like?

The idea for this came from a post on @and.bloom (IG) the account of photographer Denise Boomkens (https://www.andbloom.amsterdam/denise-boomkens/) she is a master of the art of aging unapologetically. Go and check out her site; it's a "digital happy place for women over 40."

#10 How To Clear The Way - Special Episode (21 Day Project, Day One)

#10 How To Clear The Way - Special Episode (21 Day Project, Day One)

"The impediment to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way." Marcus Aurelius

Hi! Thanks for joining me on this special episode as we kick off a special project called "Clear The Way".

For the next 21 days I will be joined by 25 incredible and creative women who are committed to kicking 2021 off with a creative bang. For the next three weeks, they're using 45 minutes a day to write their book, journal, meditate, create art, design something amazing, or map out their business goals.

They are starting their day by doing something creative and fulfilling. And, you're invited to join! I'll be doing mini recaps of each day's theme and "creative coaching question" to help you take stock, clear the way, and kick off the year with something you're proud of, whether it's a manuscript or a more positive and productive mindset. Along with the help of inspiring and accomplished female contributorsI have curated 21 days of:

  • creative coaching questions to get you going in the direction,
  • tactical mindset tools from both myself and a group of ,
  • Spotify playlists to keep you feeling groovy as you tackle the big questions,
  • downloadable PDF's and worksheets to fill out and refer back to later,
  • audio guides and meditations to keep you grounded, focused, and flowing, breathing exercises,
  • two twenty-minute movement classes for and really fun recipes (like lemon salt body scrub) to "clear the way" and get unstuck.

Today's Topic: Boundaries! Boundaries bring goals, dreams, and wishes to life because they frame our actions. Boundaries help us identify the obstacles that are standing in the way because they will be the first thing to push back via resistance from others.

Creative Coaching Question: where does resistance pop up for me when I set boundaries around goals, tasks, or creative pursuits?

What do participants get at the end of this?

One of my core beliefs for my business is that “the world needs more art, love, and you.” Sharing the stories of incredible women and amplifying their voices is the reason I started my business and my podcast (@thestoicmuse on IG) and so anyone interested gets:

Thanks for listening along, let me know what you come up with, and remember, the world needs more love, art, and you xo

#8 How To Raise Boys

"Waste no time arguing what a good man is, be one." Marcus Aurelius

TRIGGER WARNING

In addition to both of us dropping f-bombs about hockey equipment, this episode covers topics at the confluence of many controversial issues we face today: parenting, life as a #boymom, the crisis of masculinity, female empowerment, the great pendulum of gender equality, and a lot more. I am thrilled to welcome blogger and super mama Gretchen Martin to the show (who is a triple boy mom) and dig in to these hot button topics.

No matter where you land on the issue of the construct of masculinity, it's hard not to see that it's in question, if not crisis, and has been for some time. To be honest, I feel this interview just scratched the surface and I really look forward to more tough but worthy chats about what it takes to raise good men.

#4 How To Be Resilient

"Don't trust in your reputation, money, or position, but in the strength that is yours -- namely, your judgements about the things you control and don't control..." - Epictetus, Discourses

Today's guest embodies the key qualities needed to succeed in both business and life. Lucky for us she's put them all down, along with some hard learned lessons, in her bestselling book, Pulsing Through My Veins: Raw & Real Stories From An Entrepreneur. Blair Kaplan is a Social Media, PR, and Marketing Communications maven with real world experience we can all learn from. In our interview today we talk about everything from integrity to depression to book writing and what sharing stories can do for your resiliency.

#2 How To Be An Ingenue

“A Stoic is someone who transforms fear into prudence, pain into transformation, mistakes into initiation, and desire into undertaking.” - Lebanese-American essayist, scholar, and mathematician Nassim Taleb.

Nobody embodies this more than my guest today. She's a Creative Director, Fashion Designer, Multi-Business Owner, Expatriate, Expert Creative Problem Solver, and the Ultimate Ingenue, she's Julia Hildebrand. Having worn so many hats, this woman really knows how to make a pivot work for her. And what better word to describe 2020 than 'pivot'?

I'm sure we can all think of a couple other words, too.... But the fact is, life is change. And if we don't exclaim, "plot twist!" once in awhile, and learn how to adapt, we get left behind. This interview covers work, relationships (or 'love endeavors' as we like to call it), expat life, and how to be happy. It all starts with a horse drawn carriage...
