Ep: 114 Andre Davis: Fly Fishermen & Founder of Skills & Gillz

In this episode we talk to Andre Davis. Andre is an avid outdoorsman who finds peace and restoration in the demonstrative power of God's nature. He is a proud big brother, uncle, son and husband. Andre' has spent a lifetime outdoors hunting, fishing, hiking, building, playing music and teaching. Married to a sixth grade teacher, his household is full of the desire to teach and lead our youth well, with the joyful expectation of watching them become better than ourselves. Andre' has a non-profit called Skillz and Gills where kids are taught the basics of fly fishing, how to set up a rig, fly casting, all about waterways, ecosystems, conservation, and fish handling. He’s a staple in the Alabama fly fishing community, a mentor of the Mayfly Project, an avid fly tier, and friend of the show.

Many of you may be surprised to know that Andre is also an excellent writer and storyteller. We’ve had the privilege of reading several of his personal essays and we talk about those on the show. We had Andre on once before at the international fly fishing film festival at Cahaba Brewery last year, but we wanted to extend our conversation with him this year. We know you will enjoy hearing from our friend, Andre Davis.

Ep 101: Josh Spielmaker: Arkansas Fly fishing Guide, Hat maker, And Educator

Josh Spielmaker is a 33-year resident of North Arkansas. He has been married to his wife, Kristie, for 25 years, and together, they have three exceptional children. After a long career in construction and later aircraft refurbishment, he works with special needs students at Prism North America, a faith-based K-12 private school in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
Josh has always had a love of the outdoors. He and his wife made traditions of national park trips with their children as they grew. About six years ago, he was diagnosed with adult-onset fly fishing obsession, and these days, you will likely find him tying flies or on the boat fishing with his wife or any random good friend. Josh is also a regular guest on the Bear Grease podcast, where he is a faithful apologist of the sport of Fly Fishing.
In this episode, we take the reins off and free Josh to gush about fly fishing as much as he wants to, as well as many other exciting topics. Josh shares his love for craftmanship in making hats and tying flies and how skills over the course of a lifetime lead to new skills and hobbies. We also discuss the outstanding work they are doing there with the students at Prism North America. We hope you enjoy this episode and our conversation with Josh.

Ep 100: Jimbo Meador: Meditating and Marinating on Fishing Stories, Close Calls, & Jimmy Buffett

This is our 100th episode! And we could not think of anyone better than Jimbo Meador, Alabama fly fishing legend and outdoorsman to be our guest for this special occasion. Jimbo was on our show once before, but if you know Jimbo, there’s always more stories to tell.

We were so honored to be able to sit down once again in his home office and listen to the guide stories of fly fishing, close calls on the water, and his longtime friend, the late Jimmy Buffett. We know you will enjoy these stories that are downright laugh out loud funny. Jimbo is an absolute treasure to the state of Alabama and the overall sport of fly fishing, and we are thankful that we call him friend.

Thank you for joining us on this journey of 100 episodes of the Storied Outdoors. If you enjoy this podcast, please share it with a friend who you think would enjoy it as well. Here’s to 100, and may there be 100 more!

In this essay by Dr. Bryan Gill, Bryan recalls a time from his childhood that shaped him in an unexpected way. He tells about his high school football days and an important lesson he learned amidst defeat. Also, he looks at two characters in CS Lewis’ Chronicles of Narnia who had a similar arc that show that people can change, and sometimes they do. Ep 93: Brian Toone: Extreme Amateur Cyclists

Dr. Brian Toone, assistant professor of computer science at Samford University joins us on the show this week. You may be wondering what a professor in computer science is doing on an outdoor podcast? Well, Brian is not only a brilliant professor, he is also an avid cyclist. And when I say avid, he’s at a different level than 99% of cyclists in America. Recently, Brian competed in the 2023 Paris-Brest-Paris cycling event, a 761-mile ride through France where he finished the endurance race in under 59 hours.

We’re going to get into that more during this conversation, as well as his performance in the Race Across America where he was the first American to finish that year and third overall. We also talk about one thanksgiving where he decided to ride his bike from Alabama to Michigan to be with his family for the holiday. You’ll enjoy this episode with Brian Toone even if you’re not a cyclist. We are so excited to share this conversation and the incredible things Dr. Toone is doing with the research he’s conducting as he rides.

Ep 87: Second Chances & The One That Got Away an Essay by Chase Bowers

Ep 87: Second Chances & The One That Got Away an Essay by Chase Bowers

In this guest essay, entitled “Second Chances & the One that got Away,” Chase Bowers recalls a fishing trip he took as a young boy with his grandfather and father. This fishing trip proved to be the catalyst that drove a wedge between he and his dad. But, like many complicated relationships, the worst doesn’t have to be the end. And in this story, the best was yet to come, even with the one that got away. This second chance essay is a beautiful story of grace and family. We hope you enjoy it. Jimbo Meador: A naturalist, Sailor, Storyteller, and Fly Fisherman

Jimbo Meador is one of the most iconic figures in the sport of fly fishing. As a lifelong Alabamian, living along the gulf coast, Jimbo has arguably influenced the sport of fly fishing as much as anyone else in the last century. From kayak fishing, paddleboard fishing, retail Orvis stores, and a host of other areas, Jimbo’s hand is evident in the history and future of the sport. Not to mention that his life heavily influenced the character of Forrest Gump, written by his good friend and author Winston Groom. We hope you will enjoy this episode where we sat down with Jimbo in his home office and soaked up all the stories and wisdom he shared with us.

Ep 82 :Brandon Bailes: Panther branch Bugs

Born and raised in North Alabama, just minutes away from the foothills of Tennessee, Brandon Bailes can still call this beautiful rural setting home alongside his wife, two sons, and two adventurous dogs. Growing up he spent countless hours hunting, fishing, trapping, and exploring the woods and streams around his house and he hasn’t stopped even to this day.... He says, “I’m convinced that the woods and water make you a student for life.” Brandon works full-time for NASA but on the side he is a pure artist when it comes to tying flies. He is a commercial fly designer for Fulling Mills, he sits on tyer boards for several companies like Ahrex hooks, HMH Vises, and Dr Slick tools to name a few. His flies have been featured in several books “Smallmouth Flies- Top to Bottom” by Jake Villwock and Aaron Reed’s “Flyfishing Austin and Central Texas”

We talked on a previous episode about our time catching our first smallmouth bass on the fly with our pal Wade Blevins; on that same trip we had the pleasure of meeting Brandon and he gave us a couple of his incredible flies. We are honored for him to join us on the podcast. We hope you will enjoy this episode.

Ep 81: Alabama Trout And The Deeper Magic an Essay by Dr. Bryan Gill

Ep 81: Alabama Trout And The Deeper Magic an Essay by Dr. Bryan Gill

You don’t fully understand fatherhood until you’re a father. And even then, you’re just doing the best you can with what you have. In this essay, Dr. Gill reflects on lessons his dad taught him about fishing, fatherhood, and sacrifice. He also laments his failure to having yet landed an Alabama trout—a feat his two young children have both accomplished. Bryan has understood varying levels of sacrifice over the years, but two nights in Arkansas, a Great Lion, and a fishing trip helped him to truly grasp this peculiar concept. We hope you’ll enjoy this essay entitled, “Alabama Trout and the Deeper Magic,” written by Dr. Bryan Gill and read by Brad Hill.

Ep 80: Stephen Rockarts: Fly Fishing Alabama

Ep 80: Stephen Rockarts: Fly Fishing Alabama

Ep Stephen Rockarts: Fly Fishing Alabama

Stephen Rockarts is the owner and lead guide with Fly Fishing Alabama guide service. With his unceasing passion for fly fishing, he primarily targets  several native species of fish such as Alabama Bass and the Storied Redeye Bass. Pound for pound these fish are some of the strongest fighting fish you will encounter. They live in the most beautiful untouched waters that Alabama has to offer.  His trips lead people on an adventure to encounter these tremendous native species.  Not only is he a gifted guide but he is also passionate about hospitality, offering an incredible creekside burger that turns the best days fishing and some of the worst days fishing into a good time on the water. Funny how a good burger will do that. Although I have never had the pleasure of enjoying one of those burgers, I salivate everytime one pops up on my instagram feed. One day we will have to remedy that.

Stephen serves as a Cahaba River ambassador, and as a Calico fly rods Pro guide. We cover in the episode how much of an impact our pal Wade Blevins has had on Stephen as he serves as a Sam’s one bug pro angler. Fun fact it is because of Stephen that I learned about the Sam’s one bug. He is also the Vice Chair on the board of Native fish coalition. He is a newly inducted member of the River rat rafts pro guide team and also a Cortland line pro angler. The thing I love about Stephen is his love for his family and desire to be present with them. He takes being a Dad seriously.

We cover so much in this episode and we laughed a great deal. If anyone has spent anytime around Stephen he will make you feel good about yourself and have a good time. I have no doubt that translates to his guide service. We discuss his gifting in hospitality and what role that plays in guiding along with his philosophy of what are components of a great trip. Obviously we had to spend some time in discussion about the shore burger and Stephen gives out some secret tips on what makes it so special. I promise you won’t want to miss this episode.

Ep 78: Pete Peterson Author & Playwright

Pete is the author of the Revolutionary War adventure The Fiddler’s Gun and its sequel Fiddler’s Green as well as a variety of short stories. As a playwright he has published The Battle of Franklin, a stage adaptation of Frankenstein, and The Hiding Place, which received its world premier production from A. D. Players in Houston, Texas in 2019. Among the many strange things he’s been in life are the following: U. S. He and his wife, Jennifer, live in Nashville where he is the Executive Director of the Rabbit Room and Managing Editor of Rabbit Room Press.
In November of 2022 at Hutchmoot, Brad had the pleasure of hearing Pete present along with a three others about Pilgrimage and his time on The Camino de Santiago (the Way of St. James). He could tell there was a great deal left on the bone in that discussion and here we are now as Pete dives deeper into that life-changing journey. We hope you enjoy this rich conversation with one of the leading creatives in America, Pete Peterson.

Ep 73: Joshua and Caleb Simmons: The Dad's On The Fly Podcast

Ep 73: Joshua and Caleb Simmons: The Dad's On The Fly Podcast Joshua Simmons and Caleb Simmons from the Dad’s on the Fly podcast, both dads as well as brothers. They have a love of fly fishing, and they try to tackle parenting and family in the same way they tackle fly fishing figuring it out as the go along or “On the Fly.”

The Dad’s on the Fly podcast  broaches a wide variety of topics and guests talking about faith, family, fly fishing, and the intermingling of it all. In this episode, we flip the script on the Dads, Joshua and Caleb and interview them instead! We had so much fun on this collaboration and could’ve gone on for hours.

We cover a lot of ground in this episode from the origins of their love of fly fishing to a couple fishing stories to their “why” behind beginning the “Dads on the Fly” podcast. If you haven’t already listened to their episode where they interviewed us, check it out! It was a great conversation, and they asked some excellent questions. These guys are top notch and we’re glad to call them friends. Enjoy this two-part collaboration with the Dads on the Fly and the Storied Outdoors.

Ep 68: Hidden Wonders (A Christmas Story) by Dr. Bryan Gill

Ep 68: Hidden Wonders (A Christmas Story) by Dr. Bryan Gill

Grab a cup of hot chocolate and cozy up by the fire for this episode of The Storied Outdoors as Brad Hill reads “Hidden Wonders,” a short story written by Dr. Bryan Gill. “Hidden Wonders” follows the Heatherford’s, a family whose plans were thwarted by an unexpected blizzard that grounded all southbound flights out of New York—including theirs. With limited options, they decide to drop in on their eccentric Uncle Doc for the holidays. While this was not their original plan for Christmas, it might just be the one they needed to restore their children’s fading Christmas spirit. We hope you enjoy this story and have a Merry Christmas!

Ep 67: One Horse Open Sleigh (Christmas Story) by Dr. Bryan Gill

Ep 67: One Horse Open Sleigh (Christmas Story) by Dr. Bryan Gill

“One Horse Open Sleigh” by Dr. Bryan Gill is inspired by the original lyrics of “Jingle Bells,” that read, “A day or two ago, I thought I'd take a ride And soon, Miss Fanny Bright Was seated by my side…” Bryan wrote this story about two little girls and a mahogany Clydesdale that loved nothing more than pulling a shiny red sleigh in the snow. The horse changes the lives of the little girls, but that’s not the only transformation that takes place. Enjoy this story that takes a peek into the fictional life of the iconic Christmas card image of a horse-drawn sleigh.
