The Princess Bride (1987)
As you wish! It's Patreon Hannah's choice this week and she's gone for the 1987 fantasy adventure movie, The Princess Bride. If you enjoy the show we have a Patreon, become a supporter. www.patreon.com/thevhsstrikesback Plot Summary: An elderly man reads the book "The Princess Bride" to his sick and thus currently bedridden adolescent grandson, the reading of the book which has been passed down within the family for generations. The grandson is sure he won't like the story, with a romance at its core, he prefers something with lots of action and "no kissing", but he lets grandfather continue because he doesn't want to hurt his feelings. The story centers on Buttercup, a former farm girl who has been chosen as the princess bride to Prince Humperdinck of Florian. Buttercup does not love him, she who still laments the death of her one true love, Westley, five years ago. Westley was a hired hand on the farm, his stock answer of "as you wish" to any request she made of him which she came to understand was his way of saying that he loved her. But Westley went away to sea, only to be killed by the Dread Pirate Roberts. On a horse ride to clear her mind of her upcoming predicament of marriage, Buttercup is kidnapped by a band of bandits: Vizzini who works on his wits, and his two associates, a giant named Fezzik who works on his brawn, and a Spaniard named Inigo Montoya, who has trained himself his entire life to be an expert swordsman. They in turn are chased by the Dread Pirate Roberts himself. But chasing them all is the Prince, and his men led by Count Tyrone Rugen. What happens to these collectives is dependent partly on Buttercup, who does not want to marry the Prince, and may see other options as lesser evils, and partly on the other motives of individuals within the groups. But a larger question is what the grandson will think of the story as it proceeds and at its end, especially as he sees justice as high a priority as action. thevhsstrikesback@gmail.com

Se7en (1995)
The VHS Strikes Back EPS45 After we asked our twitter followers to choose a physiological thriller they chose Se7en. A film Chris and Dave have only seen once. A cult classic from the mid 90’s Plot Summary: A film about two homicide detectives' (Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt) desperate hunt for a serial killer who justifies his crimes as absolution for the world's ignorance of the Seven Deadly Sins. The sin of Gluttony comes first and the murderer's terrible capacity is graphically demonstrated in the dark and subdued tones characteristic of film noir. VHS Strikes Back E14 Dave and Chris are back reviewing the cult classic First Blood starring Sylvester Stallone.  Originally a novel written by David Morrel. Morrell stated he was inspired to write the novel by hearing about the experiences of his students at the University of Iowa who had fought in Vietnam. The author also said "When I started First Blood back in 1968, I was deeply influenced by Geoffrey Household's Rogue Male." The character's name was derived in part from a brand of apples, which his wife brought home while he was struggling to think up a name for the character. In the DVD commentary for 'First Blood' Morell comments that one of the inspirations for Rambo was World War II hero Audie Murphy. Shortly after its publication in 1972, Morrell rights were sold to Columbia pictures, who in turn sold them to Warner Bros. This trend continued for ten years. The story passed through three companies and eighteen screenplays. Finally, it was sold to Andrew G. Vajna and Mario Kassar, who turned the character of Rambo into a more likable underdog who never killed anybody, instead of the angry, psychotic character in the book who goes on a bloody rampage and literally brings the Vietnam War to America. The role was offered to many celebrities like Dustin Hoffman and Al Pacino until it reached Sylvester Stallone. The film was well-received by critics and saved Stallone's career. Plot Summary: John J. Rambo is a former United States Special Forces soldier who fought in Vietnam and won the Congressional Medal of Honor, but his time in Vietnam still haunts him. As he came to Hope, Washington to visit a friend, he was guided out of town by the Sheriff William Teasel who insults Rambo, but what Teasel does not know that his insult angered Rambo to the point where Rambo became violent and was arrested. As he was at the county jail being cleaned, he escapes and goes on a rampage through the forest to try to escape from the sheriffs who want to kill him. Then, as Rambo's commanding officer, Colonel Samuel Trautman tries to save both the Sheriff's department and Rambo before the situation gets out of hand. AVP: Alien vs. Predator (2004)
The VHS Strikes Back E13 Mashups aren't a new thing and it was at the comic publisher Dark Horse where they first came up with the idea to put together the Fox properties of Alien and Predator together in the 1990's, and which provided the inspiration for this movie. With a promising idea to have Predator's hunt Alien's as a rite of passage, Chris and Dave look at whether this movie lived up to initial promise. Plot Summary: When a private satellite encounters an unidentified source of heat in Antarctica and it is found to be a pyramid buried deep underground , a search team comprising of top-of-the-line archaeologists and engineers is sent to Antarctica to find out more . Once there , the team comes across signs which indicate that the place is inhabited by an unknown alien species . It is not long before the aliens begin to hunt the team members . At the same time , a trio of coming-of-age Predators have arrived to collect the skulls of the aliens as trophies , and the humans are caught between a deadly battle between the two warring species. Conan the Barbarian (1982)
The VHS Strikes Back E4 The VHS Strikes Back - reviewing the 1982 movie Conan the Barbarian. This was the big breakthrough for Arnold Schwarzenegger and an iconic for the whole Sword and Sorcery genre. This epic movie also pulls in legends James Earl Jones and Max von Sydow to immediately give it a bit of gravitas. Conan was a pulp character, created by Robert E. Howard and first published in Weird Tales back in 1932. But it was in 1970 where he first appeared in the comic medium with Marvel comics. Special guest Brett Scott joins us from the Podshit Nerdcast, and despite being a huge Arnie fan, Chris is watching this for the first time.
