The Castle (1997)

The Castle (1997)

Blake's last few picks have been eclectic with the likes of Beowulf, Bad Boy Bubby and The Room. So when it came to this week's pick of The Castle from 1997, Chris and Dave had no idea what to expect. Was it a stich-up (no pun intended on the Director), or a potential gem? Listen to find out!

The Castle was produced as a low-budget Australian comedy directed by Rob Sitch, and it became a surprise hit, gaining widespread acclaim both domestically and internationally. The production was characterized by its grassroots approach, with a focus on capturing the authentic charm and humor of everyday Australian life. Sitch and his team assembled a talented cast of actors, including Michael Caton, Anne Tenney, and Stephen Curry, who brought depth and authenticity to the characters of the Kerrigan family. The film's success can be attributed to its relatable storyline, witty dialogue, and endearing characters, which resonated with audiences and critics alike.

Despite its modest budget, the production of The Castle benefited from its resourceful filmmaking techniques and creative storytelling. The film was shot on location in Melbourne and surrounding areas, utilizing real-life settings to enhance the film's sense of authenticity. Sitch and his team also employed a documentary-style approach, incorporating handheld camerawork and naturalistic performances to create a sense of intimacy and immediacy. The success of The Castle demonstrated the power of storytelling and the enduring appeal of heartfelt comedies that celebrate the ordinary joys of family and home.

The Devil's Advocate (1997)

The Devil's Advocate (1997)

After last week's debacle of a movie with Chris' Assault on Devil's Island pick, Dave's decided to go with more of a classic in the same year with The Devil's Advocate.

Directed by Taylor Hackford, this production involved assembling a stellar cast, with Keanu Reeves in the lead role as Kevin Lomax, alongside Al Pacino, Charlize Theron, and Jeffrey Jones. The film, adapted from Andrew Neiderman's novel, explores themes of morality, ambition, and the supernatural within the context of a legal drama. Hackford worked closely with screenwriters Jonathan Lemkin and Tony Gilroy to bring a visually striking and intellectually stimulating narrative to the screen. Filming took place in various locations, including New York City, adding an authentic backdrop to the story's urban setting.

The movie faced challenges in balancing the supernatural elements with the psychological and legal aspects of the plot. The film's portrayal of the seductive allure of success and power was heightened by Al Pacino's captivating performance as John Milton, the charismatic but diabolical boss. The production team utilized practical effects and elaborate set designs to create visually stunning sequences, particularly in conveying the surreal and hellish visions that Reeves' character experiences. With its intricate storyline, atmospheric cinematography, and powerful performances, "The Devil's Advocate" aimed to delve into moral complexities while delivering a thrilling and visually engaging cinematic experience.

Shadow Warriors: Assault on Devil's Island

Shadow Warriors: Assault on Devil's Island

The last time Chris picked a movie starring Terry Gene Bollea, it was The Ultimate Weapon. This time, it's Shadow Warriors: Assault on Devil's Island that stars Hulk Hogan, alongside some other action movie royalty!

Shadow Warriors: Assault on Devil's Island was produced as a made-for-television action movie, part of the larger "Shadow Warriors" franchise that featured Hulk Hogan and Carl Weathers in leading roles. The film aimed to capitalize on the popularity of action-packed television movies during that era, particularly those featuring charismatic and recognizable stars. The production involved creating high-octane sequences that showcased Hogan and Weathers in their element, blending their physicality and on-screen chemistry to deliver an entertaining mix of martial arts, stunts, and explosive action.

As a television movie, "Shadow Warriors: Assault on Devil's Island" faced the constraints of a smaller budget compared to theatrical releases, but it sought to maximize the appeal of its leading actors and deliver a compelling story within the genre. The film's production emphasized the camaraderie and dynamic between Hogan's Mike McBride and Weathers' Roy Brown, crafting a narrative that combined thrilling action with elements of suspense and intrigue. While not a major theatrical release, the film targeted a specific audience seeking action-packed entertainment on the small screen, contributing to the broader appeal of made-for-television action films during the late 1990s.

Trainspotting (1996)

Trainspotting (1996)

Mike Burton is not only the creator and host of Genuine Chit-Chat and Star Wars Comics In Canon podcasts, a great friend and supporter of the show, but he's picked our movie to review for this week, Trainspotting from 1996.

Trainspotting, directed by Danny Boyle, was a bold and innovative endeavor that brought Irvine Welsh's acclaimed novel to the screen. Boyle, known for his dynamic filmmaking style, collaborated with screenwriter John Hodge to adapt Welsh's darkly comedic yet harrowing exploration of heroin addiction. The film's production faced challenges in translating the novel's intense and visceral narrative to the screen, particularly in depicting the gritty and hallucinatory aspects of addiction. The casting of a talented ensemble, including Ewan McGregor, Ewen Bremner, Jonny Lee Miller, and Robert Carlyle, contributed to the authenticity of the characters and the film's overall impact.

Boyle's kinetic direction, combined with the pulsating soundtrack featuring tracks from iconic bands like Underworld and Iggy Pop, added an electrifying energy to the film. The production team skillfully captured the gritty urban landscapes of Edinburgh, enhancing the raw and immersive quality of the storytelling. "Trainspotting" achieved critical acclaim for its uncompromising portrayal of addiction, its dark humor, and its visual inventiveness. The film's success marked a turning point in British cinema, and its cultural impact endures, solidifying its place as a seminal work of the 1990s and a defining film of the British new wave.

Death Wish V: The Face of Death (1994)

Death Wish V: The Face of Death (1994)

This week, our supporter and resident magician Leigh has really pulled a rabbit out of the hat this week! It's our first time with the Death Wish franchise, in what proved to be it's final installment.

"Death Wish V: The Face of Death" (1994) stars Charles Bronson as the infamous vigilante Paul Kersey. Directed by Allan A. Goldstein, the production of this installment faced the challenge of concluding the long-running series on a satisfactory note. Charles Bronson, in his late 70s during filming, brought his enduring presence and gritty charisma to the role once again. The production aimed to maintain the familiar formula of the series, blending action with a revenge-driven narrative, while introducing a new set of villains for Kersey to confront.

Despite the film being the last in the "Death Wish" series, it had a more modest budget compared to its predecessors. The production team had to balance the need for satisfying action sequences with the limitations of resources, resulting in a film that, while maintaining the essence of the series, had a more contained scope. "Death Wish V" retains the gritty, urban vigilante theme of the franchise while introducing fresh elements to keep the narrative engaging for fans of the series. Charles Bronson's enduring portrayal of Paul Kersey, coupled with the film's action-packed sequences, contributes to its status as a conclusion to the long-running vigilante saga.

Plot Summary:

Paul Kersey is living a new life under the alias Paul Stewart and is in a relationship with Olivia Regent, played by Lesley-Anne Down. However, when Olivia becomes the target of her ex-husband's criminal activities, Kersey is forced back into his role as a vigilant avenger. As he sets out to protect Olivia and her daughter from the ruthless mobsters, Kersey employs his lethal skills and resourcefulness, seeking justice through a series of meticulously planned and executed confrontations.

Stone Cold (1991)

Stone Cold (1991)

"Stone Cold" (1991), directed by Craig R. Baxley and starring Brian Bosworth, was a gritty action film that aimed to showcase Bosworth, a former professional football player, as a potential action star. The film's production involved crafting intense and explosive action sequences, taking advantage of Bosworth's physicality and charisma. The story follows Bosworth's character, Joe Huff, an undercover cop infiltrating a biker gang led by the menacing Chains Cooper, played by Lance Henriksen. The film faced challenges in balancing its action-packed narrative with character development, as Bosworth was relatively new to acting at the time. However, the film sought to capitalize on the rising popularity of action films in the early '90s, and Baxley, known for his work in stunt coordination and action direction, brought his expertise to deliver high-energy and visceral sequences.

The film also drew attention for its motorcycle stunts, explosive practical effects, and its attempt to position Bosworth as an action star in the mold of other muscular leading men of the era. Despite mixed critical reception, "Stone Cold" has gained a cult following for its unapologetic embrace of action movie tropes and its commitment to delivering intense, adrenaline-fueled entertainment. The production of "Stone Cold" reflects the aspirations of the early '90s action cinema and the effort to introduce new faces to the genre.

Death Ring (1992)

Death Ring (1992)

Never let it be said that our supporters don't have the ability to pull one out of the bag! And this week our good friend and supporter JAC has introduced us to one of the greatest dupes we've ever seen! Can only imagine the disgruntled video shop browsers returning after they find that Norris, Swayze and McQueen are actually just related to their better-known namesakes.

Checkout JAC's Back to the Filmography on https://pod.link/1686261095, where he's currently going through every Jason Statham movie.

"Death Ring" (1992), directed by R.J. Kizer and starring Mike Norris, follows the story of a retired cop who becomes entangled in a deadly martial arts competition. The production of the film involved navigating the challenges of creating a compelling action film within the context of a martial arts tournament. With Mike Norris, the son of martial arts and action star Chuck Norris, in the lead role, "Death Ring" aimed to capitalize on the popularity of martial arts movies during that era.

While "Death Ring" did not achieve the same level of recognition as other martial arts films of the time, the production team focused on delivering engaging fight scenes and a straightforward action narrative. The film's emphasis on martial arts and tournament-style combat reflected the trends in action cinema during the early 1990s.

Hairspray (1988)

Hairspray (1988)

This week's pick is our good friend and supporter, Geek Girl Soup's Susan! And this week it's the 1988 musical comedy, Hairspray! Check out Geek Girl Soup at https://geekgirlsoup.com.

"Hairspray" explored themes of racial integration and body image while celebrating the vibrant subculture of dance and music in 1960s Baltimore. Starring Ricki Lake as Tracy Turnblad, the film's production marked Waters' move towards more mainstream cinema. The casting of Divine, a drag queen icon known for collaborating with Waters, in a non-drag role was a notable departure for both the director and actor. Waters, known for his provocative and unconventional filmmaking style, had to navigate the challenges of balancing his unique voice with the demands of a more commercial musical genre.

The film's production also involved the collaboration of composer Marc Shaiman, who created the infectious and lively score, and choreographer Jerry Mitchell, who brought the energetic dance sequences to life. The film's success lies in its ability to tackle serious social issues with humor and heart, creating an entertaining and memorable musical that resonated with audiences. "Hairspray" became a cult classic and later inspired a successful Broadway musical adaptation and a 2007 film remake, showcasing the enduring appeal of Waters' unique vision and the film's message of acceptance and inclusivity.

Christine (1983)

Christine (1983)

Christine, released in 1983, was an adaptation of Stephen King's novel of the same name, directed by John Carpenter. The film tells the story of a possessed and malevolent 1958 Plymouth Fury named Christine, and the havoc it wreaks on the life of its owner, Arnie Cunningham (played by Keith Gordon). The production process involved bringing this sinister car to life and capturing the eerie and atmospheric elements of King's source material. Carpenter, known for his work in the horror genre, was a key figure in the film's success. He worked closely with the special effects team to create the car's transformation sequences and the chilling moments that defined the film.

One of the notable challenges during production was finding and restoring the vintage Plymouth Fury cars used in the film. Multiple cars were needed to depict Christine's various stages of destruction and repair. Additionally, the film's practical effects, including the car's self-repairing capabilities, required careful coordination and execution. John Carpenter's direction and his experience in horror filmmaking played a crucial role in establishing the film's tense and suspenseful atmosphere. Upon its release, "Christine" became a cult classic in the horror genre, thanks in part to its successful adaptation of King's novel and the effective production efforts that brought the sinister car to life on screen.

Bottle Rocket (1996)

The production of "Bottle Rocket" in 1996 marked the auspicious debut of director Wes Anderson and co-writer Owen Wilson, both of whom would go on to become prominent figures in American independent cinema. The project began as a short film of the same name in 1994, which caught the attention of producer James L. Brooks. Impressed by Anderson and Wilson's unique vision and comedic sensibilities, Brooks provided the funding needed to expand the short into a feature-length film. This financial backing allowed them to assemble a talented cast, including Owen Wilson, his brother Luke Wilson, and Robert Musgrave, who would portray the film's quirky trio of friends.

The film was shot on a modest budget over the course of 40 days in and around Dallas, Texas, where Anderson and Wilson grew up. Anderson's distinctive visual style and attention to detail were evident even in his debut, and his collaboration with cinematographer Robert Yeoman helped create the film's distinct look. The film's release in 1996 garnered critical acclaim for its quirky characters, deadpan humor, and indie sensibilities, establishing Anderson and Wilson as talents to watch in the world of filmmaking.

Full Metal Jacket (1987)

Full Metal Jacket (1987)

The production of "Full Metal Jacket" (1987), directed by the legendary Stanley Kubrick, was a painstakingly detailed and immersive experience that exemplified the director's penchant for perfectionism. Kubrick's approach to creating the gritty world of the Vietnam War was nothing short of meticulous.

One of the standout aspects of the production was the casting and training of the actors. Kubrick sought out actors who could fully embody their roles, and this included intense auditions and physical transformations. Vincent D'Onofrio, who portrayed the troubled Private Pyle, famously gained a significant amount of weight for his character, while the entire cast underwent boot camp-style military training to convincingly portray soldiers. This immersive preparation allowed the actors to inhabit their roles with an authenticity that shines through in the film.

Another hallmark of the production was Kubrick's dedication to creating authentic settings. The film was shot in real-world locations, including England and London's former Beckton Gas Works, which were transformed into war-torn Vietnamese landscapes. The attention to detail was remarkable, from the realistic military equipment and uniforms to the hand-painted "Born to Kill" helmet worn by Private Joker, played by Matthew Modine. Kubrick's insistence on practical effects and his willingness to take the time necessary to achieve his vision contributed to the film's raw and uncompromising portrayal of the Vietnam War. The result was a cinematic masterpiece that continues to be celebrated for its realism and artistry.

Plot Summary:

"Full Metal Jacket" (1987), directed by Stanley Kubrick, offers a gripping and unflinching portrayal of the Vietnam War through a two-part narrative. The first part unfolds in a U.S. Marine Corps boot camp at Parris Island, South Carolina. Here, the audience is introduced to a group of young recruits undergoing brutal training under the iron fist of Gunnery Sergeant Hartman (R. Lee Ermey). The recruits, including the cynical and quick-witted Private Joker (Matthew Modine) and the struggling and mentally unstable Private Pyle (Vincent D'Onofrio), endure physical and psychological torment as they are molded into efficient killing machines. This part of the film delves deep into the dehumanizing effects of military training, emphasizing the loss of individuality and the emergence of a collective soldier identity.

The second part of the film takes place in the heart of the Vietnam War itself. Joker, now a war correspondent, and his fellow Marines are thrust into the brutal and chaotic urban warfare of the Tet Offensive. They navigate the horrors of battle, facing a relentless enemy and witnessing the profound psychological toll the war takes on both their comrades and themselves. Joker's journey culminates in a chilling confrontation with a deadly sniper, a moment that forces him to confront the moral complexities of war and the duality of human nature.

"Full Metal Jacket" is a searing exploration of the dehumanization and psychological trauma inflicted by war, as well as an examination of the blurred lines between humanity and inhumanity in the crucible of combat. Kubrick's meticulous direction and the outstanding performances of the cast make it a haunting and enduring portrayal of the Vietnam War experience.

Casting: The film featured an ensemble cast, including Ron Livingston as the disenchanted protagonist Peter Gibbons, Jennifer Aniston as the waitress and love interest Joanna, and Gary Cole as the overbearing boss Bill Lumbergh. The casting choices were crucial to the film's success in capturing the essence of its characters.

Filming: "Office Space" was primarily filmed in Austin, Texas, on a modest budget of around $10 million. The office scenes were shot in an actual office building to maintain an authentic and realistic atmosphere.

Studio Interference: During production, there were some disagreements between the filmmaker and the studio over the film's content and marketing. The studio executives were uncertain about how to promote the movie and even suggested changing the title, which led to tensions between Mike Judge and the studio.

Box Office Reception: Despite the studio's uncertainty, "Office Space" was released in theaters on February 19, 1999. Unfortunately, the film didn't perform well at the box office during its initial run, only grossing around $12 million.

Cult Following: Despite its lackluster box office performance, "Office Space" found a new life on home video and cable television. The film gained a dedicated cult following and became a beloved classic among office workers and comedy enthusiasts.

Legacy: Over the years, "Office Space" has achieved iconic status, often cited as one of the best comedies of the late '90s. Its humor and commentary on corporate culture have remained relevant, making it a timeless favorite.

In summary, "Office Space" had a rocky start with studio interference and a lack of commercial success in its initial release. However, over time, it garnered a devoted fan base and established itself as a timeless satire on the absurdities of office life, ensuring its place in comedy history.
