Jack Stafford | The Life of a Modern Troubadour

Jack Stafford | The Life of a Modern Troubadour

About Jack Stafford:

Jack Stafford is a British singer-songwriter and super troubadour. He is most well-known for his thought-provoking lyrics. He is on a mission to bring spirituality to the centre stage and mysticism back into the mainstream.

Jack grew up in the UK but quickly moved to Amsterdam, where he lived and worked as a copywriter, musician and fashion designer. However, this led to burnout, so Jack sold all his possessions and set off on a bicycle tour as a nomadic troubadour. He travelled through 45 countries, playing over 700 house concerts in return for a place to sleep.

He recorded many of his crazy adventures in his songs, and through those—plus countless self-help books and podcasts, as well as yoga, his Ayurveda songs, and Vipassana meditation—he grew and grew to become a unique modern-day troubadour.

The culmination of his life skills is the unique Podsongs podcast, where—together with other musical artists from around the world—he interviews special people in selfless service to others, and writes a song to bring greater awareness to their work.

Jack lives in seclusion in the South of Italy. He is a qualified Ayurvedic Practitioner, student of metaphysics and Italian representative of The Aetherius Society - he also hosts another podcast called the Mysticast.

Meghan Sullivan and Paul Blaschko | The Good Life Method

Meghan Sullivan and Paul Blaschko | The Good Life Method

About our guests:

Meghan Sullivan is the Wilsey Family College Chair in Philosophy at the University of Notre Dame, director of the God and the Good Life Program, and director of the Notre Dame Institute for Advanced Study. She has published works in many leading philosophy journals. Her first book, Time Biases, was published by Oxford University Press. Her work has been supported by grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and the John Templeton Foundation. Sullivan has degrees from the University of Virginia, Oxford University, and Rutgers University, where she earned a PhD in philosophy. She studied at Balliol College, Oxford University, as a Rhodes Scholar.

Paul Blaschko is an assistant teaching professor in philosophy at the University of Notre Dame. He heads up curriculum design and digital pedagogy for the God and the Good Life Program, and has recently been working to develop similar curricula at universities across the nation as part of an initiative funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Blaschko completed an MA in philosophy at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, a PhD at the University of Notre Dame in 2018, and held the Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship prior to being appointed to his current position.

About The Good Life Method:

For seekers of all stripes, philosophy is timeless self-care. Notre Dame philosophy professors Meghan Sullivan and Paul Blaschko have reinvigorated this tradition in their wildly popular and influential undergraduate course “God and the Good Life,” in which they wrestle with the big questions about how to live and what makes life meaningful.

Now they invite us into the classroom to work through issues like what justifies our beliefs, whether we should practice a religion and what sacrifices we should make for others—as well as to investigate what figures such as Aristotle, Plato, Marcus Aurelius, Iris Murdoch, and W. E. B. Du Bois have to say about how to live well. Sullivan and Blaschko do the timeless work of philosophy using real-world case studies that explore love, finance, truth, and more. In so doing, they push us to escape our own caves, ask stronger questions, explain our deepest goals, and wrestle with suffering, the nature of death, and the existence of God.

Philosophers know that our “good life plan” is one that we as individuals need to be constantly and actively writing to achieve some meaningful control and sense of purpose even if the world keeps throwing surprises our way. For at least the past 2,500 years, philosophers have taught that goal-seeking is an essential part of what it is to be human—and crucially that we could find our own good life by asking better questions of ourselves and of one another. This virtue ethics approach resonates profoundly in our own moment.

The Good Life Method is a winning guide to tackling the big questions of being human with the wisdom of the ages.

You can purchase The Good Life Method anywhere where great books are sold.

About the book: The Poet & The Sage is an esoteric work of deep symbolism and archetypal metaphor. Delivered through the time-tested language of poetry and prose, The Poet & The Sage merges the worlds of philosophy, theology, mysticism, art, mythology, and narrative to convey deep truths about human nature, and about our common aim of being reunited with that which is most divine about us. The careful student will do well not to simply read this book, but to sit with it, and to allow the ideas therein to play gracefully within the heights and depths of their soul.

In the third episode of our Inspiration Sessions we hear from Kai Whiting. Kai is the author of "Being Better: Stoicism for a World Worth Living in", a postdoctoral researcher in Stoicism and sustainability, and a current contributor the The Walled Garden. Kai gives an example of what he seeks to offer to The Walled Garden community through a dialiectic discussion on a variety of claims that are made among people today, in regards to the Stoic belief that "virtue is the only good", whether there exists a need for the Stoic God, and what is driving the polarization of beliefs and ideologies within modern society. Through this discussion Kai demonstrates the type of debate and introspection he will be bringing to the community and the different beliefs we hold, and how this can assist us to better aim ourselves toward virtue.

Sharon Lebell | Rescuing Philosophy from the Philosophers, and Virtue from the Sanctimonious

In this episode, Sharon and I discuss our new Patreon/Podcast collaboration: The Walled Garden. This is an idea that we've been mulling over for a few months now, and it's time to spill the beans!

You can follow along with new fortnightly episodes at patreon.com/simonjedrew/

About Sharon Lebell:

For over 25 years Sharon Lebell’s international bestseller, The Art of Living: The Classic Manual on Virtue, Happiness, and Effectiveness, has inspired philosophy lovers and the modern Stoicism movement. A modern interpretation of Epictetus’ teachings, it is a perennial classic cherished as a daily spiritual guide for readers from all walks of life.

Lebell is committed to expressing ancient wisdom in accessible language so everyone can apply it to better their lives and experience philosophy’s enchantments. The imperative to marshal our gifts to improve the lives of others and the importance of art, music, and nature are central to her message of what makes the best possible life.

Lebell is best known for her idiosyncratic writing and speaking about philosophy, spirituality, religion, Buddhism, Judaism, and Ethics. She is also co-author with Brother David Steindl-Rast of The Music of Silence. Sharon Lebell is a sought-after composer and performer on a one-of-a-kind 5-octave Hammer Dulcimer with 106 strings, which sometimes makes surprise appearances in her philosophical presentations. She leads a weekly online musical-contemplative gathering called “Strings of Holiness” to help participants start each day with a clear mind and an open heart.

Leonidas Konstantakos | Stoic Just War Theory & Wrestling Pythons in Florida

About Leo: Leonidas Konstantakos is a PhD candidate working on Stoicism and International Relations, especially Stoic just war theory. He, along with Kai Whiting, is the co-author of "Being Better, Stoicism for a World Worth Living in".

About the book:

Twenty-three centuries ago, in a marketplace in Athens, Zeno of Citium, the founder of Stoicism, built his philosophy on powerful ideas that still resonate today: all human beings can become citizens of the world, regardless of their nationality, gender, or social class; happiness comes from living in harmony with nature; and, most important, humans always have the freedom to choose their attitude, even when they cannot control external circumstances.

This empowering message led a wide array of people, from the slave Epictetus to the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius, to embrace the philosophy. In our age of political polarization and environmental destruction, Stoicism has taken on new relevance. In Being Better, Kai Whiting and Leonidas Konstantakos apply Stoic principles to contemporary issues such as social justice, climate breakdown, and the excesses of global capitalism. Above all, they show that Stoicism is not an ivory-tower philosophy or a collection of Silicon Valley life hacks, but a vital way of life that helps us live simply, improve our communities, and find peace in a turbulent world.
