90: Remove Your Mask with Amy & Sarah of Unqualified Therapists

Today Emily chats with the hosts of The Unqualified Therapist Podcast, Amy Baumgardner & Sarah Simone.

These women have been through some shit. They may not have the qualifications, but they’ve been on this healing journey with their own therapists for more years than they can count.  They are smart, funny, and uncensored disruptors who are lighting up the dark corners of life.

“We’re breaking the stigma around the things that are usually hush hush,” they say. The two women offer knowledge, solidarity, and tools to move forward through your (or your loved ones) mental health struggles. They aim to take their listeners from surviving to thriving.

Their goal is to share honest and authentic stories in order to normalize and prioritize mental health. While things can get kind of heavy, they are sure to add some light hearted f*ckery because who can’t use a laugh nowadays?

The ladies open up to Emily and the listeners all about their mental health experiences. They shed some truth, provide a few tips to help you fight through and they shed some light on the importance of telling your truth and feeling your feelings.

85: Find Your Spiritual Superpower with Nicole Sartini M.ED., LPCC, NCC, IMHP

85: Find Your Spiritual Superpower with Nicole Sartini M.ED., LPCC, NCC, IMHP

In today's episode I chat with Nicole Sartini M.ED., LPCC, NCC, IMHP. Nicole is the co-founder and Executive Director of Bridge Counseling & Wellness in Louisville, KY. Nicole (she/her/hers) has been practicing therapy professionally since 2010 and has been working in the field as a non-professional since 1999.

Sartini’s specialty centers around helping adults recovering from difficult childhoods, leaders looking to find more balance in their lives, and high-functioning individuals who suffer from anxiety or depression. She also specializes in assisting individuals going through major life changes such as: entering adulthood, starting or graduating from college, getting married, making job changes, and preparing for or adjusting to the birth of a child.

Nicole’s counseling practice involves integrating traditional talk therapy with mind-body work through the practice of mindfulness, the use of diet and exercise, nutritional supplements, and an emphasis on developing a healthy self image. Nicole believes that every life obstacle we face can be transformed into an opportunity for growth.

We cannot change the past, but as long as we are alive, we can acknowledge and act on the fact that we are still writing our stories- that the present and future are still ours to create. We can make the choice to love ourselves just as we are, and at the same time, move forward toward our goals and the kind of life we most want.

It is her intention to help every person she works with to the best of her ability and to respect the trust they put in her as a mental health professional by offering thoughtful and evidence-based interventions. In today's conversation Nicole shares what her experience was like when she decided to stop running away from her feelings and face them head on.

In addition, Nicole talks about how the challenges she has faced have helped her to trust her intuition, build her self awareness and ease her anxiety.

Today Dillon provides some tangible tools you can implement into your daily life if you are struggling to connect and make friends with other people.

Some things you will learn within this episode:

Four Tips for Making & Keeping Friends as an Adult

  1. Proximity- Look for communities or people around you and looking for people who are accessible

Ex: Neighbors, Spiritual Organizations, Networking Organizations, Apartment Communities etc.

    2. Consistency-Be consistent in order to keep the momentum going; Become a familiar face

    3. Finding similarities by getting involved in activities that are authentic to you- Ex: A local MeetUp group, a bike club, a run club, intramural sports, yoga etc.

   4. Shoot your shot by connecting and starting the conversation, no matter how scary it may seem.

Tip: Evaluate Your Plate- Take a step back and look at what’s on your plate and ask yourself, can things be moved around? Where can you take some energy from and add it to making friends.

72: Breaking Mental Health Barriers within the Asian Community featuring Jennifer Tarm

In today's episode I had the pleasure of speaking with Jennifer Tarm. Jennifer (she/they) is an Asian American therapist-in-training and community organizer. She is registered as associate marriage and family therapist and is currently pursuing her doctorate in counseling psychology. With her passion in advancing and addressing BIPOC mental health from a system's perspective, she is a team member at Asian Mental Health Project (AMHP), a nonprofit dedicated to educating and empowering the pan-Asian community to seek mental health services. During the time of the recording she served as the Director of Operations & Special Projects. She currently serves as the Director of Partnerships for AMHP. In todays episode, Jennifer explains what the mission and purpose of Asian Mental Health Project is, how it came to be, and why it's such an important resource for the AAPI community. She also goes into detail regarding her own personal mental health journey.  Jennifer gets candid about the barriers she has had to overcome as an Asian American, how she felt it was her duty to live up to her families expectations of her regardless of how it made her feel, and how generational trauma, lack of mental health resources and a lack of community almost made her flunk out of college. Lastly, she explains how seeking therapy helped her gain clarity regarding her identity and her life.
