More on Stu:

Filmmaker Stu Pollard has produced 9 films in his home state of Kentucky, including survival thriller RUST CREEK, powerful high school drama AND THEN I GO, and bowling comedy SPLIT. He has produced more movies outside the Bluegrass as well. These include the uproarious Jack Quaid & Maya Erskine wedding rom-com PLUS ONE, Syrian refugee documentary THIS IS HOME, and docu-drama FREELAND, starring Krisha Fairchild. Stu has also directed two features: romantic comedy NICE GUYS SLEEP ALONE and suspense drama KEEP YOUR DISTANCE, both set against a vibrant Kentucky backdrop.

Pollard founded Lunacy Productions in 2015 to expand his storytelling horizons and break free of the “one-at-a-time” indie filmmaking model. This has sparked numerous new collaborations with both emerging talent and established creators. Lunacy’s current development slate includes WE’RE HAUNTED, a horror comedy about dysfunctional roommates confronting an evil spirit; THE MAN WHO KNEW BELLE STARR, a riveting Western-infused revenge drama; THE TRESTLE, a supernatural thriller revolving around an infamous Kentucky legend; and ALAS, BABYLON, a post-apocalyptic survival parable based on the classic novel.

Also an entrepreneur, Stu has spearheaded a number of other creative endeavors including the event planning app REUNACY, nostalgic web series THE EIGHTIES EMPORIUM, whiskey lifestyle brand BOURBONALITY, content creation collective SMALL BATCH CONTENT, and philanthropic nonprofit organization TRUNACY.

In addition to teaching at Film Independent and USC’s School of Cinematic Arts, Stu recently founded LunacyU, an online educational platform dedicated to teaching the next generation of independent filmmakers. At LunacyU, he currently teaches classes on Film Financing and Cinematic Music. He holds a BS in business from Georgetown and an MFA in film from USC, is a member of the DGA and PGA, and serves on the boards of the Louisville Film Society, the Horse Farm Workers’ Educational Assistance Fund and GU’s Alumni Board of Regents.

In 2007, with the backing of his most loyal investors, he formed Scott duPont, Inc. to acquire & develop additional film properties. duPont is now teaming up with existing investors and an investment group out of New York & Miami to raise a new production slate to produce & market several films (now in development). 041: Demystifying Production Insurance (with Owner of Alan Schlaifer Insurance)

What is Production Insurance exactly? How do you get it affordably for smaller projects? What exactly do all those terms on that certificate of insurance even mean?!?!?

Production Insurance is a non-negotiable when it comes to filmmaking. You need it to rent gear. You need it to book locations. You need it to keep your crew covered. Filming without it is a risky business. We'll be joined by Alan Schlaifer who has been helping indie filmmakers get insured for over two decades. We plan to demystify production insurance and help make it more attainable for filmmakers at all levels.

More on Alan:

You can reach Alan to ask questions or get a quote for production insurance at alan@asisfinancial.com.

Prior to starting his agency Alan Schlaifer began his career working in post-production. He moved up the ladder from the role of assistant video editor to sound designer and music editor. Recognizing that there were a number of opportunities for calamity in the production process, he transitioned into the field of production insurance. He spent a few years with the John Hart Agency to learn the ropes of handling production insurance needs. Eventually, he started ASIS Entertainment Insurance. It is interesting to note that Alan’s mother was a studio teacher who brought him to the set with her, so he has been around the industry for his entire life. From that beginning, an entry into the industry wasn’t an unexpected leap. In his early years, Alan worked as an extra, body double, hand model, on-set P.A., and assistant to a director where he experienced the production process from script to screen. Alan believes that – for better or for worse – every frame of film offers a learning opportunity. If the worst happens, you want the comfort of knowing that your insurance policy covers the solution.

028: VFX Tech - What Do You Need To Know to Direct?

028: VFX Tech - What Do You Need To Know to Direct?

Is it your dream to direct on an LED stage (like The Mandalorian)?

How do you choose between LED wall and green screen?

How do you know what to prep before you go to set?

How do you decide the shots you can lose to save money on VFX later?

What about using the tech for your driving scenes so you don’t have to take it to the streets?

Can all of this help you shoot your low budget sci-fi or make it harder?

Let’s talk VFX tech and what you need to know before you get to set. Filmmaker Marco Ragozzino shares his experience working in VFX and how you can make your film happen, even if you don’t have a big budget. More importantly, he’ll share what you need to know to be hired to direct these  VFX shows.

Those questions and more will be answered on this episode of The Working Director. Hosted by Director/Producer
Jenn Page.

Marco  Ragozzino
Bitten by the filmmaking bug at an early age, Marco  Ragozzino grew up making all kinds of weird and imaginative short films using whatever tools were available at the time - VHS cameras, scale  models, and classmates willing to lend a hand. From there, Marco went on to study film & animation at the School of Visual Arts in New York  City, eventually relocating to Los Angeles upon graduation.

His  interest in creating wild and whimsical worlds, in addition to needing a  regular paycheck, led him down the path of Visual Effects production.  He has produced visual effects for sequences in films and TV shows such  as Ready Player One, Men in Black: International, IT: Chapter 2, the  Mandalorian and the upcoming "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom" (Warner /  DC) and Slumberland (Netflix). His filmmaking heroes include DIY  mavericks such as Roger Corman, Lloyd Kaufman, and George Lucas.

"The Cypher"

With his reputation and a potential record deal on the line, Khalil confronts his opponent Yung Reap and defends his secret during a freestyle competition.

Film Team:

Letia Solomon - Director

Wes Awkuobi - Writer

Ben Cory Jones – Executive Producer

Anne Brashier - Producer

C. Craig - Producer

Letia Solomon and her team for The Cypher were selected to premiere in the 2020 Tribeca Film Festival April 15-26, 2020. When the festival was postponed due to the global pandemic, their dreams were stalled, but that didn’t stop them. Tribeca turned to an exclusive online format and her team sought a public relations firm to get more eyes on the film. In true independent film spirit, they turned the exclusive platform around and was able to gain some success during such an uncertain time. Since then, The Cypher has been featured in CAA Moebius's Short Showcase and selected in the American Black Film Festival's HBO Competition in August 2020.

More on Lauren:
Lauren has led actors to bookings in national commercials, as well as series regular and contract roles, lead and supporting roles, and recurring and guest star roles, both in television and film.

From NYC, Lauren planted roots in LA to further share her years of experience in front of and behind the camera. She started out as an actor and comes from an elite lineage of teachers. Having studied acting extensively with Karen Ludwig, she eventually became her leading student. Karen was the key to Uta Hagen.

Lauren possesses a strong insight into the casting process. She has done a good deal of casting, including casting Oscar winner Adrien Brody (The Pianist) in one of his first lead roles in Ten Benny. She has also been involved in the casting of several movies with the talents of Simon Baker (The Mentalist), Lauryn Hill (singer), Jesse Martin (Law and Order), Frank Vincent (Sopranos) and more.

These experiences working with seasoned and (at the time) undiscovered Oscar winners, taught her so much about the commitment it takes to get noticed in this competitive field. She applied this knowledge when taking on her own projects. In addition to directing many theater productions and independent films, she also has a feature film, several award-winning short films and an entire eleven-episode webseries under her belt. In her projects, she was able to present close to a hundred of her students in front of and behind the camera. Lauren once had the pleasure of sharing the stage with Danny Nucci (Titanic) in Italian American Reconciliation.
