The Role of Government from Romans 13.1-7 - Wednesday Wisdom
Thanks for listening to the "This is Gonna Hurt" podcast.  In this episode, we look at the role of government from Romans 13: Romans 13.1 Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. 2 Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment. 3 For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Would you have no fear of the one who is in authority? Then do what is good, and you will receive his approval, 4 for he is God's servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God's wrath on the wrongdoer. 5 Therefore one must be in subjection, not only to avoid God's wrath but also for the sake of conscience. 6 For because of this you also pay taxes, for the authorities are ministers of God, attending to this very thing. 7 Pay to all what is owed to them: taxes to whom taxes are owed, revenue to whom revenue is owed, respect to whom respect is owed, honor to whom honor is owed. Big Idea: The Role of Government in the Life of a Christian The Order of Authority The Nature of Rules and Rulers The Role of the Conscience The Order of Authority Romans 13. 13 Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. 2 Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment. The Nature of Rules and Rulers 3 For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. The Role of the Conscience 5 Therefore one must be in subjection, not only to avoid God's wrath but also for the sake of conscience. 6 For because of this you also pay taxes, for the authorities are ministers of God, attending to this very thing. 7 Pay to all what is owed to them: taxes to whom taxes are owed, revenue to whom revenue is owed, respect to whom respect is owed, honor to whom honor is owed. Big Idea: The Role of Government in the Life of a Christian The Order of Authority The Nature of Rules and Rulers The Role of the Conscience Truth: God uses governmental authority to teach our hearts how difficult it is for us to submit to Him. Application: Live knowing that submitting to authority is intended to create an affection and appreciation for our holy and righteous God. Action: Become a student of Jesus. Empowering the Gifts of God from Romans 12.3-8 - Wednesday Wisdom
Thanks for listening to the "This is Gonna Hurt" podcast.  In this episode, Gordon preaches from Romans 12.3-8: Big Idea: Empowering the Gifts within the Church Gifting Starts with Humility Gifting is Intended for the Church Gifting is Guided by God’s Commands Gifting Starts with Humility Romans 12. 3 For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned. Gifting is Intended for the Church 4 For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, 5 so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. Gifting is Guided by God’s Commands 6 Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; 7 if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching; 8 the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness. Big Idea: Empowering the Gifts within the Church Gifting Starts with Humility Gifting is Intended for the Church Gifting is Guided by God’s Commands Truth: God equips the church to fulfill her mission by giving unique gifts to each Christian for them to serve in humility and by God’s design. Application: Live knowing that God has uniquely equipped you to serve the church in fulfilling the Great Commission. Action: Pray for joy in using your gifts within the church.

Can God Be Trusted? from Romans 11 - Wednesday Wisdom
Thanks for listening.  In this episode, Gordon preaches from Romans 11.25-32.  Enjoy! Big Picture Question: Can God Be Trusted? Sometimes It Looks Like God Failed Jesus Makes Every Promise of God Yes and Amen Trust God No Matter the Circumstances Sometimes It Looks Like God Failed Romans 11.25 Lest you be wise in your own sight, I do not want you to be unaware of this mystery, brothers: a partial hardening has come upon Israel, until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in. 26 And in this way all Israel will be saved, Jesus Makes Every Promise of God Yes and Amen as it is written, “The Deliverer will come from Zion, he will banish ungodliness from Jacob”; 27 “and this will be my covenant with them when I take away their sins.” Trust God No Matter the Circumstances 28 As regards the gospel, they are enemies for your sake. But as regards election, they are beloved for the sake of their forefathers. 29 For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable. 30 For just as you were at one time disobedient to God but now have received mercy because of their disobedience, 31 so they too have now been disobedient in order that by the mercy shown to you they also may now receive mercy. 32 For God has consigned all to disobedience, that he may have mercy on all. Blessing Through Sacrifice from Romans 11.17-24 - Wednesday Wisdom
Thanks for listening to this episode of the "This is Gonna Hurt" podcast.  In this episode, Gordon shares his sermon from Romans 11.17-24. Big Picture Question: What Makes Sacrifice a Blessing? Sacrifice Blessing Grace Sacrifice Romans 11. 17 But if some of the branches were broken off, and you, although a wild olive shoot, were grafted in among the others and now share in the nourishing root of the olive tree, 18 do not be arrogant toward the branches. If you are, remember it is not you who support the root, but the root that supports you. Blessing 19 Then you will say, “Branches were broken off so that I might be grafted in.” 20 That is true. They were broken off because of their unbelief, but you stand fast through faith. So do not become proud, but fear. 21 For if God did not spare the natural branches, neither will he spare you. 22 Note then the kindness and the severity of God: severity toward those who have fallen, but God's kindness to you, provided you continue in his kindness. Otherwise you too will be cut off. Grace 23 And even they, if they do not continue in their unbelief, will be grafted in, for God has the power to graft them in again. 24 For if you were cut from what is by nature a wild olive tree, and grafted, contrary to nature, into a cultivated olive tree, how much more will these, the natural branches, be grafted back into their own olive tree. Big Picture Question: What Makes Sacrifice a Blessing? Sacrifice Blessing Grace Truth: Sacrifices are always a blessing because they are empowered by grace. Application: Live knowing that every blessing you receive from God comes from sacrifice. Action: Remind yourself that every sacrifice you make grows you in the image of Jesus.

Big Idea: A Gospel that Protects Protection from God’s Holiness Protection from Our Doubts Protection from Our Fears Protection from God’s Holiness Matthew 28.1 Now after the Sabbath, toward the dawn of the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb. 2 And behold, there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone and sat on it. 3 His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow. 4 And for fear of him the guards trembled and became like dead men.  5 But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid Protection from Our Doubts 5 But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. 6 He is not here, for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay. 7 Then go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead, and behold, he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him. See, I have told you.” Protection from our Fears 8 So they departed quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, and ran to tell his disciples. 9 And behold, Jesus met them and said, “Greetings!” And they came up and took hold of his feet and worshiped him. 10 Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid; go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me.” Big Idea: A Gospel that Protects Protection from God’s Holiness Protection from Our Doubts Protection from Our Fears Truth: The resurrection of Jesus is more powerful than your doubts and fears Application: Live knowing that God’s holiness is now a gift that protects you from all fears and doubts. Action: This week, counter your fears and doubts with the reminder that Jesus overcame them by His resurrection.
