I Am Not My Hair

I Am Not My Hair

You, dear listener, might have wavy, curly, coily, or kinky hair. TODAY, we're talking about the obsession with our hair. Not our own obsession with our hair, #TeamNatural. Rather, the obsession non-POC seem to have with touching our hair.

You probably had a variation of this conversation at least once in your life: “I just love your hair! It’s so beautiful. Can I touch it?” A lot of the time, you’re lucky if they ask. Why is it, for many POC, our hair becomes a reason to establish personal boundaries with others?

Beyond hair, we talk about expectations to conform to a particular professional (Read: White) image. Natural hairstyles like locs or afros are banned in the workplaces. Women might be "expected" to wear heels. You might dress in a manner that's "too flamboyant". How do you unpack that in order to live more authentically?

Ashley Nesby is back for an encore performance. She joins the Fab Four in to create the Thriving Five. We jump into self-care as Jo Lee bites the bullet, Johnathan feels like a baby, Zach is SO humble, Carlos uses the force, and Ashley tells the family business.

These QPOC Dice (A Dungeons and Dragons Extravaganza)

These QPOC Dice (A Dungeons and Dragons Extravaganza)

The Core Four are joined by the illustrious Raffy Regulus. It's Carlos's first time rolling the d20s. For vets like Johnathan, Zach, and Jo, it's still an adventure we didn't expect. Raffy takes us on a Dungeons and Dragons adventure as only a QPOC could.

What twists and turns await our aspiring adventurers? What lurks in the forgotten places of Waterdeep? With special editing and sound design by Jo, get ready for a ride.

Dungeons and Dragons is given a special place in the hearts of many queer and trans people of color. For some, it's a safe way to try on new identities. It's a playful way to explore who we are.

If you never played the game before, we hope you enjoy our quest. If you're an old hat at D&D, maybe you'll be inspired for your next game.

From all of us at This QPOC Life, we wish you a Happy Holiday and can't wait to be back with you in 2020!

The Golden Jubilee

The Golden Jubilee

It's a double celebration! With your help, This QPOC Life brought home BRIC's B Free Award for People's Choice in time for our 50th episode. It's a very special Golden Jubilee. Thank you to all our listeners, patrons, and friends for an incredible display of love and support. We couldn't do this without you. Thanks for including us in your lives and your self-care.

The Core Four reprise their roles as Heros (and Theyros) of Light with surprise twists and new characters. Can they overcome new and returning evil? We get into it about Notre Dame, Game of Thrones, Lizzo, Beyoncé, and Pete Buttigieg.

More QTPOC Voices!

It's also our honor to introduce you to the cast of Topics Include, a new podcast in This QPOC Fam. Topics Include is an unapologetically trans podcast that seeks to create a space for trans people to gather through pro-Black, sex positive, and healing-informed conversations that are educational by accident and liberational by choice. It is hosted by Ianne Fields Stewart, L Morgan Lee, Samy Nour Younes, and Maybe Burke. You can visit their website and tune in here:  https://www.topicsincludepod.com

The Caucasity and the Hypocrisy

Sometimes, you just got to get some stuff off your chest. Jo Lee (and Carlos!) record for All Stars 4, Johnathan gets ready to debut some films, and Zach is back with something to say.

We vent about our frustrations with people who call themselves allies and don't back it up with action.

Reclaiming My Self-Care

Reclaiming My Self-Care

The gang is back catching up about post-Midterm elections and have a roundtable chat about self-care. Carlos reaches Petty Level 9000, Jo Lee gets lit AF and Johnathan goes west. Our very own, United States Congress wins Bloop of the Week.

The Tea

We talk about the generosity of Pittsburgh's Muslim community to the Tree of Life synagogue, a sweep of historic wins as Democrats succeed in flipping the House, and what a more equitable Congress looks like.

Bloop of the Week: Congress

With a Blue Congress on the horizon, there is a shining beacon of hope... and she HAS the time. Maxine Waters will be leading the Finance Committee with the power to subpoena ol' 45. Will C-Span become must-see TV?

Reclaiming My Self-Care
We begin every episode discussing what we've done for self-care. It's our belief on that self-care is a radical act as a QPOC. We go around the table discussing what genuine self-care can look like, when it might become an indulgence, and letting yourself off the hook.

Throwbacks and Face Cracks

Throwbacks and Face Cracks

We take a look back at some of our favorite moments of from year one! Johnathan's ready to set it off, Jo Lee wakes up and pays attention and Carlos is a BOSS.

We talk about the White House and trans erasure, "Yes on 3" in Massachusets, the hottest states of the midterm elections, and internalized racism on Dr. Phil.

Read this article from Vox to learn more about the key states in the upcoming midterm elections. If you live in these states or know people who do: mobilize and VOTE!

Bloop of the Week: Megyn Kelly

It's a Halloween miracle. NBC has had it with Megyn Kelly... OFFICIALLY! Twitter, television and Al Roker got her RIGHT together after she defends blackface. The Megyn Kelly Show has since been canceled.

Throwbacks and Face Cracks

What a year it has BEEN! We share some awesome milestones, including how many times our community has tuned in! We share highlights, our most listened to Top 5 episodes, and Carlos spooks her own tea.

Happy Birthday to Us!

Happy Birthday to Us!

Carlos, Jonathan, and Jo Lee celebrate the first anniversary of This QPOC Life! Pedro joins us on the mic, just like Episode 1 . Carlos gets a check-up, Jo Lee is on a journey, Pedro’s role-playing and Johnathan re-invents the narrative. We also debut This QPOC Theme-song!

Next week, we’re going to share some of our favorite moments from our first year as a podcast. We want to know what YOUR favorite moments have been. Tweet us . Facebook us . Email Us . Get at us!

International Pronouns Day

Wednesday, October 17 was the first International Pronouns Day, spearheaded by @PronounsDay . Visit pronounsday.org for more information. Jo Lee shares their insight into why pronouns are important and why asking for someone’s pronouns is always a good idea.

Spirit Day

Since 2010, GLAAD has led the movement for an annual event called Spirit Day. In a nod to the purple stripe on the pride flag, purple is worn to show support for LGBTQ youth, who endure bullying and violence at disproportionate rates.

“Ass”-assins Creed

So what happens when you stick a giant nude statue in the middle of Ancient Greece? The gaymer community wasted zero time answering that question in Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey. Check out Johnathan’s write up (and screencaps) on the blog .

Pitch Perfect?

When someone tells you they have perfect pitch… can you really believe them? Johnathan digs up our Bloop of the Week and Carlos gets REAL music nerdy.

Lessons from Our First Year

Can you believe it’s been a year already? It’s been a crazy and wild ride and we thank all of you for joining us. Don’t forget to share your favorite memories of This QPOC Life. Get at us any way you can.

Before Harvey Milk

Harvey Milk is certainly the most famous queer political figure at the beginning of the LGBT rights movement. But, he wasn't the first! That honor belongs to José Sarria aka The Grand Mere, aka Mama Jose, aka Absolute Empress I de San Francisco, aka the Widow Norton.

Hey Xorje!

We are so happy to welcome Xorje to our show, who hosted Carlos, Johnathan, and Jo Lee on his show. Xorje shares his story as a Mexican-American growing up in a Texas border town, his coming out story, and how he intentionally owns his latinidad.

Columbus Day is Cancelled... OFFICIALLY

In more recent years, Columbus Day has been rebranded as Indigenous People's Day. We talk about the origins of Columbus Day and Jo Lee faking a headache to get out of marching in a neighborhood parade.

Have you ever faked an illness to get out of an uncomfortable or problematic situation? Let us know!

Bloop of the Week: Robert Ortiz

If you check out our blog, you'll have read Johnathan's write up about a viral video of Robert Oritz, an openly gay Latino, ranting in the back seat of a cab. Ortiz, who proclaims that he supports Trump, calls the driver "racist against gays". The driver, Shaun Pepas, is black.

#ComingOutQPOC

Please continue to share your coming stories and thoughts using the hashtag #ComingOutQPOC.

We share tweets from @MyStoryOutLoud, @atthepodcast (At The Intersection, a fellow QPOC podcast!), and @kc_caffiene.

Friends and Monsters

Friends and Monsters

In Episode 31, the Core Four chop it up about what to do when you realize your friends and favs might be problematic. We discuss Honey Davenport's exit at The Monster, authentic self-care, emotional labor, and Bette Midler wins Bloop of the Week.

Cheers to an NYC Icon

In celebration of LGBTQ History Month, we honor the memory of Ms. Colombia, who passed away on October 3, 2018. She was found in the waters off Riis Park in Queens. At the moment, NYPD doesn’t suspect foul play.

Jo Lee shares their memory of the beloved queer icon. To learn more about why Ms. Colombia was so special, you catch watch this docu-series No Your City.

Serving Honey to Monsters

It’s definitely a Drag Con weekend for the history books. Captured in a video that went viral, Honey Davenport calls out racists comments made by the general manager of The Monster, a mainstay gay bar on Christopher St. The owner, Charles Rice, release his own statements in response. You can read the full story on New Now Next.

Your Friends are Problematic

In what feels like should have been a moment for New York’s queer community to band together against racism, attitudes defending the Monster came to light. The Core Four get into it about dealing with the people in your friend circles who reveal problematic behavior and beliefs.

Bloop of the Week: Bette Midler

“Women are the n-word of the world.”

Bette Midler included this lyric (which was problematic when it was written in the 70s) in a recent tweet, now deleted. Careful what you Tweet folks, the Wayback Machine exists.
