Bob the Drag Queen and Performing Performance
It's a This QPOC Life summer special with none other than Bob the Drag Queen! The Black Lives Matter movement has taken center stage in the national conversation in America. And as many White people (and brands, sports teams, etc.) are “waking up” to the ills of systemic racism, we can’t help but wonder if it’s real or if it’s all for show.  On today’s episode, we discuss performative “wokeness” that we are seeing in the culture, how to spot it, and what to do when confronted by it. Then, we interview with Bob The Drag Queen, winner of season 8 of RuPaul’s Drag Race, about her recent comedy special Bob The Drag Queen, Live At Caroline’s, and discuss how she performs activism through her drag and comedy. Bob the Drag Queen, Live at Caroline's is available on the iTunes store!  GROW THE COMMUNITY If you believe in the work we are doing, invest in our success, become a Patron on Patreon! Zoom, Boom, Stuck in My Room
On the Season 3 Finale of This QPOC Life, we talk about the goals we set at the beginning of the season and the changes we had to make. We discuss Zoom exhaustion, Zoom bombers, and how COVID-19 disproportionately affects BIPOC. As a note: This episode was recorded prior to the homicide of George Floyd. As we march to demand justice for Black lives, This QPOC Life wants to remind you that, for Queer and Trans BIPOC, looking after your mental health is an act of resistance.  Remember that you can always talk to us across social media @ThisQPOCLife. While we're away, we invite you to join our Discord community to help us grow a safer space for QTPOC. You can find the link below. Keep an eye out. You never know when we might pop up... or pop off. The Legendary Legacy of Ballroom as told by Michael Roberson
Michael Roberson discusses the ballroom community -- which drew mainstream notice courtesy of Madonna's 1990 "Vogue" video and Jennie Livingston's 1991 documentary Paris Is Burning -- and its ability to unify traditionally excluded individuals. These self-made families forge bonds that span a lifetime and has developed into a global subculture. He believes that the family dynamics created within ballroom culture can teach the rest of us how to develop healthy communities. Michael Roberson is an adjunct professor at the New School and Union Theological Seminary and a senior scholar for the Center for Race, Religion and Economic Democracy. He's a member of the sound art collective ULTRA-red and a creative consultant for the FX series Pose. I Am Not My Hair
You, dear listener, might have wavy, curly, coily, or kinky hair. TODAY, we're talking about the obsession with our hair. Not our own obsession with our hair, #TeamNatural. Rather, the obsession non-POC seem to have with touching our hair. You probably had a variation of this conversation at least once in your life: “I just love your hair! It’s so beautiful. Can I touch it?” A lot of the time, you’re lucky if they ask. Why is it, for many POC, our hair becomes a reason to establish personal boundaries with others? Beyond hair, we talk about expectations to conform to a particular professional (Read: White) image. Natural hairstyles like locs or afros are banned in the workplaces. Women might be "expected" to wear heels. You might dress in a manner that's "too flamboyant". How do you unpack that in order to live more authentically? Ashley Nesby is back for an encore performance. She joins the Fab Four in to create the Thriving Five. We jump into self-care as Jo Lee bites the bullet, Johnathan feels like a baby, Zach is SO humble, Carlos uses the force, and Ashley tells the family business. Ask Ashley! Black and Lesbian in Corporate America
Working a corporate gig can be complicated and political enough. Now add being POC to the experience. Okay, now add being queer. NOW, add being a woman. Today, Carlos is flying solo with a special guest, Ashley Nesby. Ashley shares her experience as a black woman and a lesbian navigating her way through the corporate world. She also shares her coming out experience and being the first lesbian couple to attend her high school's prom. Now, she serves as a Sr. Product Marketing Manager at Buzzfeed and recently married! Ashley already feels like one of the gang and we hope to include her in more episodes in the near future. Letting Go of Toxic People
Leaning in (and leaning over) to 2020, you might be examining your relationships and grappling with people who are toxic in your life. The blurring edges between social media and real life don't make that a walk in the park. As the conversation about "cancel culture" heats up, is it okay to cut those people from your life? The Core Four dive pretty deep talking about their own experiences in dealing with toxic people. Sometimes, that's looked like letting go of people associated with toxic memories. Family members, partners, friends-with-benefits, and acquaintances can all be toxic influences in your life. They're not easy to deal with in an ongoing basis. Letting go of those people can be just as difficult. What if you are the person who needs to be dealt with? Relationships are hard. But the relationship you have with yourself is worth asking these questions. GROW THE COMMUNITY If you believe in the work we are doing, invest in our success, become a Patron on Patreon! These QPOC Dice (A Dungeons and Dragons Extravaganza)
The Core Four are joined by the illustrious Raffy Regulus. It's Carlos's first time rolling the d20s. For vets like Johnathan, Zach, and Jo, it's still an adventure we didn't expect. Raffy takes us on a Dungeons and Dragons adventure as only a QPOC could. What twists and turns await our aspiring adventurers? What lurks in the forgotten places of Waterdeep? With special editing and sound design by Jo, get ready for a ride. Dungeons and Dragons is given a special place in the hearts of many queer and trans people of color. For some, it's a safe way to try on new identities. It's a playful way to explore who we are. If you never played the game before, we hope you enjoy our quest. If you're an old hat at D&D, maybe you'll be inspired for your next game. Werqplace Violence
Acclimatizing to workplace culture can already be a tricky thing to navigate. That's especially true in corporate culture. The whole crew attended an LGBTQIA+ event that Zach put together. The panel brought folks together sharing different experiences as far as their ability to self express at work. This had us thinking about what it's like being QTPOC at corporate gigs. "Tone it down." "Everything doesn't have to be about sexuality." Binarist dress codes. These are just a few of the ways that we can be limited in the workplace. Where do these rules and microaggressions come from? What's possible when we can stop worrying about whether that nail polish is appropriate for work? What can happen when we can truly WERQ the workplace? GROW THE COMMUNITY If you believe in the work we are doing, invest in our success, become a Patron on Patreon! Thank you to all our Patrons. Let's Get Freaky
As Halloween month continues, the crew is ready to explore their freaky sides. Sex can be a scary conversation for some, especially for queer and trans people of color. There can be shame attached to our experiences. Sometimes, we don't have all the information. Messaging we receive as young people has consequences. In the age of internet hookups, the unknown can put our physical safety at risk. There's a LOT to unpack. So... Let's talk about sex baby! Hello from the Other Side
Spooky Season continues as we delve into the seasonal traditions of just some of our QPOC ancestral worship. The spread of Christianity through colonization has reshaped spiritual culture for many people of color. In many cases, especially for African Americans, it's meant the outright erasure and rejection of those traditions. Fear in Space
This week, the Credibility Crew tackle the topic of "safe space". Specifically, we discuss the lack of virtual and tangible spaces for nonbinary People of Color. Externally, it's easy to find language about "brave space", but where can nonbinary people turn to address their fears and concerns? Zach seems tongue-tied. Simple and Clean't
We're flying without Carlos and Zach this week, but Johnathan and Jojo bring the dynamics and the duo. Johnathan talk about win-wins and Jo Lee makes the face melt. We cover a lot in this episode. Kingdom Hearts 3 is being released, new works by POC to celebrate, Kamala Harris is running for POTUS, and you're never too young to wear MAGA hats. We also breakdown a discussion between Mo'Nique and Whoopi Goldberg. As QPOC, do we have a responsibility to pave the way for those coming behind us? Chime in with your thoughts on social media! Commander in McChief
2019 is off to a blazing start and leaving us gagged. You know we had to talk about the Commander in McChief serving McDonald's at the White House. (Does that make it the White Castle?) This leads us into a discussion about wealth, decadence, and spending. Johnathan goes super-saiyan, Zach tucks for the first time, Jo Lee gets into them coins, and Carlos gets physical.  Grow the Community If you believe in the work we are doing, invest in our success, become a Patron on Patreon! Thank you to all our Patrons. Carlos has a new fan(?), Zach gets inked, Johnathan gets back in the groove, and Jo Lee is living #ThisStudioLife. We also get our first listener mail and it's a lot to unpack getting us into a discussion about tolerance and identity politics. Wicked casts the first black woman to play Glinda. Her name is Brittney Johnson. Know her. We discuss the tone-deafness of Ellen's forgiveness of Kevin Hart. The border wall wins Bloop of the Week. We Three Kweenz
We're here and queer in two-thousand-reclaiming-what's-mine-teen! Jo Lee becomes official, Carlos reverses the holiday diet curse, Zach's ready for a weave, and Johnathan gets bandersnatch'd. In many Latinx communities, the Christmas holiday continues through Three Kings' Day. In our effort to fight the colonizers, we decided to call it Three Kweenz Day celebrate three sets of queens. The first, your hosts. The second, the cast of All Stars Season 4. And third, we honor and give thanks for the life of the Grandfather of Ballroom and Pioneer, Hector Xtravaganza.  Listen to Jojo's single! 2018 left us feeling dazed and confused. Hoodwinked. Run amok. So, let's kiki and have some laughs. Reclaiming My Self-Care
The gang is back catching up about post-Midterm elections and have a roundtable chat about self-care. Carlos reaches Petty Level 9000, Jo Lee gets lit AF and Johnathan goes west. Our very own, United States Congress wins Bloop of the Week. The Tea We talk about the generosity of Pittsburgh's Muslim community to the Tree of Life synagogue, a sweep of historic wins as Democrats succeed in flipping the House, and what a more equitable Congress looks like. Bloop of the Week: Congress With a Blue Congress on the horizon, there is a shining beacon of hope... and she HAS the time. Maxine Waters will be leading the Finance Committee with the power to subpoena ol' 45. Will C-Span become must-see TV? Reclaiming My Self-Care We begin every episode discussing what we've done for self-care. It's our belief on that self-care is a radical act as a QPOC. We go around the table discussing what genuine self-care can look like, when it might become an indulgence, and letting yourself off the hook. Throwbacks and Face Cracks
We take a look back at some of our favorite moments of from year one! Johnathan's ready to set it off, Jo Lee wakes up and pays attention and Carlos is a BOSS. We talk about the White House and trans erasure, "Yes on 3" in Massachusets, the hottest states of the midterm elections, and internalized racism on Dr. Phil. Read this article from Vox to learn more about the key states in the upcoming midterm elections. If you live in these states or know people who do: mobilize and VOTE! Bloop of the Week: Megyn Kelly It's a Halloween miracle. NBC has had it with Megyn Kelly... OFFICIALLY! Twitter, television and Al Roker got her RIGHT together after she defends blackface. The Megyn Kelly Show has since been canceled. Throwbacks and Face Cracks What a year it has BEEN! We share some awesome milestones, including how many times our community has tuned in! Happy Birthday to Us!
Carlos, Jonathan, and Jo Lee celebrate the first anniversary of This QPOC Life! Pedro joins us on the mic, just like Episode 1 . Carlos gets a check-up, Jo Lee is on a journey, Pedro’s role-playing and Johnathan re-invents the narrative. We also debut This QPOC Theme-song! Next week, we’re going to share some of our favorite moments from our first year as a podcast. We want to know what YOUR favorite moments have been. Tweet us . Facebook us . Email Us . Get at us! International Pronouns Day Wednesday, October 17 was the first International Pronouns Day, spearheaded by @PronounsDay . Visit pronounsday.org for more information. Jo Lee shares their insight into why pronouns are important and why asking for someone’s pronouns is always a good idea. Spirit Day Since 2010, GLAAD has led the movement for an annual event called Spirit Day. In a nod to the purple stripe on the pride flag, purple is worn to show support for LGBTQ youth, who endure bullying and violence at disproportionate rates. “Ass”-assins Creed So what happens when you stick a giant nude statue in the middle of Ancient Greece? The gaymer community wasted zero time answering that question in Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey. Check out Johnathan’s write up (and screencaps) on the blog . Pitch Perfect? When someone tells you they have perfect pitch… can you really believe them? Johnathan digs up our Bloop of the Week and Carlos gets REAL music nerdy. Lessons from Our First Year Can you believe it’s been a year already? It’s been a crazy and wild ride and we thank all of you for joining us. But, he wasn't the first! That honor belongs to José Sarria aka The Grand Mere, aka Mama Jose, aka Absolute Empress I de San Francisco, aka the Widow Norton. Hey Xorje! We are so happy to welcome Xorje to our show, who hosted Carlos, Johnathan, and Jo Lee on his show. Xorje shares his story as a Mexican-American growing up in a Texas border town, his coming out story, and how he intentionally owns his latinidad. Columbus Day is Cancelled... OFFICIALLY In more recent years, Columbus Day has been rebranded as Indigenous People's Day. We talk about the origins of Columbus Day and Jo Lee faking a headache to get out of marching in a neighborhood parade. Have you ever faked an illness to get out of an uncomfortable or problematic situation? Let us know! Bloop of the Week: Robert Ortiz If you check out our blog, you'll have read Johnathan's write up about a viral video of Robert Oritz, an openly gay Latino, ranting in the back seat of a cab. Ortiz, who proclaims that he supports Trump, calls the driver "racist against gays". Friends and Monsters
In Episode 31, the Core Four chop it up about what to do when you realize your friends and favs might be problematic. We discuss Honey Davenport's exit at The Monster, authentic self-care, emotional labor, and Bette Midler wins Bloop of the Week. Cheers to an NYC Icon In celebration of LGBTQ History Month, we honor the memory of Ms. Colombia, who passed away on October 3, 2018. She was found in the waters off Riis Park in Queens. At the moment, NYPD doesn’t suspect foul play. Jo Lee shares their memory of the beloved queer icon. To learn more about why Ms. Colombia was so special, you catch watch this docu-series No Your City. Serving Honey to Monsters It’s definitely a Drag Con weekend for the history books. Captured in a video that went viral, Honey Davenport calls out racists comments made by the general manager of The Monster, a mainstay gay bar on Christopher St. The owner, Charles Rice, release his own statements in response. You can read the full story on New Now Next. Your Friends are Problematic In what feels like should have been a moment for New York’s queer community to band together against racism, attitudes defending the Monster came to light. The Core Four get into it about dealing with the people in your friend circles who reveal problematic behavior and beliefs. Bloop of the Week: Bette Midler “Women are the n-word of the world.” Bette Midler included this lyric (which was problematic when it was written in the 70s) in a recent tweet, now deleted. On The Tea The backlash after the Tangerine Tyrant calls Haiti and other African nations “shithole countries”.
