182 - Over-the-counter (OTC) Hearing Aids and the Evolution of Hearing Enhancement with Matt Skindzier of Knowles

182 - Over-the-counter (OTC) Hearing Aids and the Evolution of Hearing Enhancement with Matt Skindzier of Knowles

Over the past 70 years, the field of hearing augmentation has seen remarkable advancements, transitioning from archaic ear trumpets to discrete digital aids with personalized features like Bluetooth connectivity and mobile app customization. Knowles Corporation's invention of balanced armatures has been pivotal in driving the industry towards high-performance hearing solutions and premium sound offerings. This week, Amyn Amlani hosts Matt Skindzier, the Senior Director of Product Marketing at Knowles Corporation. The 2022 FDA decision permitting over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aids for adults with mild-to-moderate hearing loss signifies a significant milestone, making hearing aids more accessible and affordable. These aids serve as a vital solution for those with untreated hearing loss, especially in areas lacking audiological services or for individuals without healthcare access. While OTC hearing aids show promise, their uptake continues to be hindered by challenges like high costs, social stigma, and limited awareness, reducing widespread adoption. Yet, the growing market provides prospects for enhanced consumer choices, advanced features like Bluetooth streaming, and greater availability of personalized sound experiences. Looking ahead, the integration of personalized soundscapes and innovative technologies into standard hearing aid development offers a promising future. 161 - Hearing Aid Use Lowers Fall Risk: Interview with Laura Campos, AuD, PhD

161 - Hearing Aid Use Lowers Fall Risk: Interview with Laura Campos, AuD, PhD

Falls are one of the costliest mishaps affecting older adults, and there is evidence suggesting a link between age-related hearing loss and falling. Dr. Laura Campos, a clinical audiologist at the University of Colorado, recently joined Brian Taylor to discuss her study's focus on hearing aid usage and the potential for reduced fall risk in older adults. The research revealed that individuals with hearing loss face a 2.4 times higher risk of experiencing falls compared to their normal-hearing counterparts. Dr. Campos and her team investigated whether hearing aid use could mitigate this risk. The study findings demonstrated that individuals who consistently wore hearing aids, particularly for at least four hours a day, exhibited a significantly lower likelihood of experiencing falls. While the study couldn't establish causality, it underscored a strong association between consistent hearing aid usage and reduced fall risk. Dr. Campos emphasized that incorporating discussions about the potential link between hearing loss, cognitive decline, and falls into clinical practice could offer valuable insights for clinicians. She also highlighted the need for further research to uncover the underlying mechanisms driving these associations and the potential for using objective outcome measures to track the impact of hearing aid usage on fall risk over time. 158 - The Power of Adaptability: Actress Tiffany Storrs on Hearing Loss and Transforming Pain into Purpose

This week, Gael Hannan sits down with Tiffany Storrs, a trilingual actress, advocate, and author of the memoir "Adaptability." She shares her transformation from pain to purpose through faith and determination and describes her experience with sudden hearing loss and two hearing implant surgeries. Tiffany's hearing loss struck suddenly after giving birth, and coming to terms with her new reality was a process that took time. Sadly, her friends and family initially doubted her condition, causing her deep pain. However, Tiffany used their skepticism as fuel to prove to herself the power of adaptability. She encourages others to view challenges as "wild cards" and discover the hidden blessings within them. Through her hearing loss journey, Tiffany has gained purpose and perspective, considering it a victory rather than a setback. Both Tiffany and Gael Hannan share a mission to support the hearing loss community by sharing their stories and practical tools for everyday living. Tiffany's memoir, "Adaptability," is available on Amazon, and she seeks to reach as many people as possible to offer guidance and support on their own hearing loss journeys. 152 - State of Disgrace: The Need for Improved Hearing Health Screenings in Public Schools - Live from FHH 2023

152 - State of Disgrace: The Need for Improved Hearing Health Screenings in Public Schools - Live from FHH 2023

Originally presented at the 2023 Future of Hearing Healthcare Conference, Dr. Jacque Scholl, Executive Director & Head of Audiology for Soundwrx and Head of Pediatrics for Tuned, discusses the motivation behind and solution for expanding a telehealth platform for pediatrics. Despite several known barriers to learning in schools, such as hearing loss and mental health issues, no state screens for all of them. This leads to a failure in identifying and addressing these barriers early, hindering children's academic success. Outdated screening methods and insufficient training further contribute to the problem. Dr. Scholl emphasized the urgent need for improved screening and intervention programs to support children with hearing loss and auditory processing disorders in schools.
