Awful Is Opportunity - Ben James, Investment Director
The UK is wobbling! Says Ben James But ‘awful is also opportunity’ 💪 I sat down with Ben, Investment Director at Baillie Gifford, a drama school buddy of 20 years ago, for my HippiHut Podcast this week - a long overdue catch up! Our discussion touched on key topics relevant to the current business landscape.
Here are some takeaways:
1. **Awful is Opportunity:** Challenges present opportunities for innovation and growth.
2. **Servant Leadership:** Ben an ex-military officer turned investment Director at Baillie Gifford in Edinburgh, embodies servant leadership. (He did back at drama school as well! - no star tantrums from him 😂) How can we integrate this servant leadership style to enhance organisational culture and performance?**War,
3. **Polarisation's Pitfalls:** Recognising that polarisation can hinder progress, how can we foster unity and collaboration within our teams and industries?
4. Peace, and Prosperity:** Amidst the wobbles in the UK economy, being cautiously optimistic is a strategic stance.
5. **Circular Economy Innovation:** Ben's enthusiasm for the circular economy highlights the potential for sustainable business practices. How can we incorporate circular economy principles into our strategies for a more resilient future? I was particularly interested to talk about this due to my own vision to build on 50 years of sustainability practice at our North House Croft in Shetland.
6. **The Ripple Effect of Acts of Kindness:** Both myself and Ben advocate for kindness. How can simple acts of kindness create positive ripples within our organisations and communities?

Couple in Conflict? Creative Cash Flow Cures
Join Married Couple, exuberant and Entrepreneurial Mother of 5, Zoe, and risk averse Accountant, Travis as they visit the HippiHut® to conquer their conflict around cash flowing business ideas. Apologies for some sound quality issues on Thor's Mic, he was mobile!
FOLLOW UP NOTE FROM ZOE "Thor, your direct questions and business acuity were so helpful. It was just brilliant to have an outsider give voice to some very fuzzy notions and senses both Travis and I had. We’re really excited to see where your session leads us, as a couple and a family.
Travis thought you were personable and charismatic, which allowed you to create a quick rapport. He was also impressed by how you kept the conversation moving so ideas could flow. The best thing for him was that you gave us a direction to go in at the end of the chat, which was to bring my creativity to an established business model and combine it with Travis’ skillset. We’re still “playfully” discussing various business ideas of an evening.
I thoroughly enjoyed the challenge you gave me to go out and pitch my somewhat embryonic and vague cooking ideas to the mummy mafia / network of Tunbridge Wells and environs. Well, what a triumph that has been. I’ve now become a Family Cooking Consultant… of all things. I’ve got my first budget / batch cooking session booked for two weeks’ time and I’m preparing a combination cooking and homeopathic workshop with another chum. I’ve also had expressions of interest from the alternative health types around here, a few menopausal women, a couple of pregnant first time mums, Functional Medicine doctors needing support for their clients as well as the middle class types we discussed who are feeling the pinch and need to budget.
In terms of business model, it’s a twist on the ultimate First World service industry… the Declutterer. Needless to say, there are a few of those around here.
I’ve also been able to pivot a personal food blog into a business website so all the online infrastructure is there - any chance you could please put the website into the HippiHut show notes? www.realliferealkitchen.com
Thank you, thank you! Needless to say I’ll spread the word on my email list etc
And I have Travis to keep me on the straight and narrow. Hurrah!
God bless and thank you again.
I will keep you posted on how things go.
