93. A Look at Grief Through the Lens of 9/11
In this episode, KJ reads the story, "What Bobby McIlvaine Left Behind" which was written by Jennifer Senior for The Atlantic. This is a true story about the McIlvaine family who lost Bobby McIlvaine (beloved son, brother and soon to be fiance) when he was killed the morning of 9/11/2001. This story illustrates how grief can be processed so differently for each individual. Bobby's mother shut out Bobby's girlfriend, Jen, when Jen refused to let her see Bobby's last diary. Jen became a shell of a person and refused to give up the diary- what was in the diary that made it so difficult for her to part with? Bobby's father became well known in some circles for his ideas about 9/11 being an "inside job" and Bobby's brother was wracked with survivor's guilt. So where are they now after processing their grief for two decades? 36. Interview With a 9 Year Old: What is Therapy Like For Kids?
In this episode you will be introduced to Laura, a 9-year-old girl who has recently been to therapy to address her anxiety. Laura was struggling with many of the anxious behaviors we talked about in episode 32 on anxiety in children. She was irritable, negative, emotionally sensitive, and was struggling in her family relationships. 29. Parenting Adopted Children & Adoption Trauma with Candice Mortensen
Candice Mortensen joins us this week to discuss her family and how they came to be. Prior to adopting her five children, Candice worked as a trauma specialist for children who were adopted! As a result, Candice has had such a unique experience becoming a mother. She has been able to use the knowledge and skills she learned as a therapist to help her children heal from their trauma. Each of the Mortensen’s children came in unique and special ways, but each had their own traumatic history. This trauma effects so much in each of her children’s lives-even a family meal is impacted by this trauma. 24. Part 1: Surviving the Columbine School Shooting, PTSD & Recovery with Laura Hall & Sarah Bush
The Columbine High School Shooting took place in Littleton, Colorado on April 20, 1999. Two of the school's seniors opened fire and killed 12 students and one teacher and left many others wounded. The two students later killed themselves in the high school library where they had taken many lives earlier.  Sarah and Laura, sisters, were students at Columbine High School and survived the shooting. The events of that day left them traumatized. They graciously shared their story with us and in this interview you will hear what they each experienced during the shooting, their experiences with PTSD and their road to recovery.  The sisters are sharing their story to spread awareness about trauma and its effects. They, with other Columbine alumni, have started an organization to help support those who are victims of trauma and to help educate communities on how to respond effectively to traumatic events.
