The Thrive Cast

By Andre Alipate

Modern Era, Ancient Philosophies. The wilderness and the outdoors has been our true ancestral estate since the dawn of early man. Our survival as a species can be attributed to those Hunter Gatherers who not only survived but Thrived.

Thrive Cast looks to connect and share with all those continuing to Thrive in a modern world today. We hear from modern hunters, gatherers, fishermen, survivalists and share from those in the pursuit of mastery through education, nutrition, and fitness.

David Shaw - The Hunters Club, Cameraman & Producer

David Shaw - The Hunters Club, Cameraman & Producer

I managed to wrangle David Shaw Producer and Cameraman of New Zealand outdoor and adventure TV show 'The Hunters Club'. What is effectively a quick catch up between our busy schedules and upcoming hunts. We've been pretty busy since travel and hunting restrictions have been lifted in New Zealand so was good to have a bit of debrief.
Dave has been the driving force and brains department behind much of what we do at The Hunters Club, behind the lens and the editing desk anyway. It's been a hell of a ride for all of us involved in the Team and we're really proud of what we've managed to achieve so far in this journey with Dave.
I pick Dave's brain a little about his journey in the world of Hunting in New Zealand and how he came to be filming and bringing to your TVs screens what is held by many including myself, a quintessential Kiwi pastime - Hunting. We also also talk about what we've got coming up, things Dave's learnt behind the lens and where to next this season and beyond for the Show.

Jamie Carle - Hunter, Fisherman & Armwrestler

Jamie Carle - Hunter, Fisherman & Armwrestler

Was great to catch up with my long time friend and hunting partner Jamie Carle aka MountainMan.

Jamie and I go a fair ways back and have spent a good chunk of our lives hunting together. We reminisce on a few things, talk about how hunting has shaped us as individuals, we also touch on some of the lessons learned. We also discuss what we planned for future Hunts in the near future along with our experiences with archery and bowhunting.

Jamie is a well informed, knowledgeable outdoorsman and i haven't met many as dedicated or driven as he is. This won't be the last time i get Jamie on and i think this stands as a good first past discussion. In the future i'd like to get him back to dress down and discuss some of the more pointed processes we go through in planning and researching our hunts.

Piri Weepu - All Black #1049, Piri's Tiki Tour

Piri Weepu - All Black #1049, Piri's Tiki Tour

I had the pleasure of catching up with Test All Black and now Outdoors TV host Piri Weepu.

We chat about traversing the heights of Test Match Rugby and being on the world stage to now, hunting and gathering in and around Aotearoa for his Show “Piri’s Tiki Tour”. And as is expected from Piri there’s a few laughs and tall tales from the bush and his playing days as we dive into his transition from playing to presenting on air. It was great to be able to yarn to one of New Zealand’s humble cult hero’s and keen outdoorsmen

Sam Wild - Underwater Cameraman & Spearfisherman

Sam Wild - Underwater Cameraman & Spearfisherman

Always a good catch up with Sam Wild. Hardcore spearo, cameraman, free diver and hunter.

It's fair to say you won't find Sam too far away from the ocean. We touch on some of his recent salty adventures. Chat about his job filming and capturing underwater footage for various TV shows. His love for the ocean and what keeps him coming back with that camera or speargun in hand.

He also rips me about not having shot a quintessential NZ Spearo's target - the humble Butterfish.

Ben May - Professional Rugby Player, Farmer & Hunter

Ben May - Professional Rugby Player, Farmer & Hunter

Ben 'Bam-Bam' May is about as keen as an outdoorsman as they come. I catch up with the Maori All Black and Super Rugby veteran, having played well over 100 pro Super Rugby games. We reminisce about footy, yarn about hunting and chat about where to next for the Big man. It's fair to say He’s no slouch on or off the Field or mountain for that matter.

I'm sure this wont be the last we hear of Ben May. I look forward to having a more technical follow up chat with the larger than life Prop in the near future.
