When it comes to music; the 90's as you know it really didn't happen until Late 1991. That fall the Grunge Explosion happened and everything from before then just kind of faded into obscurity. But was these music from earlier on that was unjustly forgotten? Is there any hidden gems from before? That's what we're going to look at on this episode. We'll take a look at the singles chart this week 30 years ago and see what's aged well and what was better off forgotten. (Spoiler Alert: There's a lot of the latter).

Now that we're well into January, artists are starting to put out the first new songs of 2021. Will this new crop of songs set the tone for the year? or will the musical patterns of the year before still linger on? Personally I hear something different about these singles.

The Tim Gavin Show continues into 2021 with Shorter Episodes and more experimenting. 

This Episode I look back at one good thing from this year; the innovation in the music industry and the great songs that got released this year. Obviously the pandemic has left the arts in a state of uncertainty but with the stuff that came about because of it maybe things will get better.

Christmas is on the way, but before we get into that I wanted to talk about some of the new songs that came out over the last few weeks. 

I'm taking a brief break from The Tim Gavin Show for the rest of November. I didn't want to leave this podcast completely hanging so I decided to do one last music meeting before I re-locate. Starting a new job and I want to give myself a few weeks to unpack, get used to a new routine, and figure out where I can fit this podcast in it. In the meantime, binge the episodes, and follow along with us this week while we talk about a bunch of new songs.

This one was a lot of fun to put together. This episode you'll learn a little bit about the history of some strange instruments like The Theremin, Chapman Stick, and The Glass Harmonica. We'll also take a look at what music was popular this week in 1982, a year that a good chunk of my vinyl collection came out, and you'll get some suggestions on great progressive rock to listen to.

We're just having some fun this week. No sources, just songs, and lots of opinions. I give a lot of opinions that from what I have observed online and sometimes in real life are unpopular. But that's after the music meeting, follow along with us and listen to the songs or hear them all after.

The more I do these music meetings, the more fun I have with them. Listen along to the songs we review. 

This year; two different bands decided to cover the Charlie Daniels Band's iconic hit; "The Devil Went Down To Georgia. Neither of those covers are any good IMO, but that being said it got me thinking about what makes that song so great. It was written and recorded in the heat of the moment to complete an album, but there's a lot of history and mythos that went into the song itself and its appeal. 

After that, I give you info on some music history surrounding the September 11th attacks. Albums released that day, and a reaction to what happened.

What even IS a song of summer?

Well it's actually a real certification given to one song by Billboard each summer. The biggest song to chart between May Long and Labour Day (give or take a week or two depending on when that is). Lets explore what it means to be a song of summer, and what I think are the 10 best Songs of Summer. 

One thing I really miss doing in Radio is the Music Meetings. Going over new music and predicting what songs would be hits, and having fun finding new artists. Scott Mitchell and I decided to turn this into a Podcast Episode to test out, so let us know what you think. Also because we can't play the songs we talk about, we have links to the songs so you can listen along to them too. All Links are for Youtube unless specified otherwise.

The Arts are in more danger than ever, and I wanted to do my part to let people know how to keep it alive. This week I show some connections between Music and Theatre, and have a chat with Pat Nims from Zoom Theatre; a company in Portland putting on full plays over Zoom.

We're taking a special look at the Billboard Charts from this week in 1974. This was the week that Canada first had the August long weekend. We look at what songs people were listening to and if the number 1 song still holds up.

I'm making "Still The Number 1" it's own stand-alone episode going forward. Listen every other week when I and Scott Mitchell (Host of Somewhat Bland Substance, and all around great dude) take a look at different music charts and figure out if the Number 1 spot was deserved, if it aged well, and what was even better. This week; Scott and I look at the Billboard Hot 100 on last week of July in 1969. When the number 1 song tried to look at the future, and made some cold-takes on what would happen in the year 2525 and beyond.

This Episode we're looking back at what was going on in 1993. It was a bit of a transitional year; lots of changes and emerging sounds, some popular sounds peaking, and some outliers from the 80's trying to stay relevant. But there was some crazy stuff going on. Like Ƭ̵̬̊ for example....you hear what I mean.

It's Canada Day this week. I don't talk much about Canadian Content on this Podcast, but this episode is an exception. I'm examining all Provinces and Territories and looking for artists and albums I like. There was a ton of stuff I just heard for the first time and dug right away. So we're going to find some great Canadian Music, find some connections, and maybe figure out what makes Canadian Artists stand out from the rest of the world.

Bit of a shorter one this week. Talking about the history of the Remix. One thing I love about remixes is how un-traditional they are. Taking established pieces of art and turning them into something new. Something that I think is important. All Music Is Real Music and remixes add to this point by a lot. Remixes are also an important part of music majorly contributed to by POC and the LGBTQA+ Community. 

I fly solo on "Still The Number 1" this week, keeping it short and talking about what as big this time last year. Old Town Road (Remix) was topping the charts and I argue it's an important song and earned that Number 1 Spot, but is it STILL GOOD? Listen and find out.

I also get into the philosophy of this podcast at the end and (GASP) I get a little political.

I know it's a stretch, but there is some genuine six degrees of separation stuff going on here. This week I connect the dots between one of the most important musical movements in a generation all the way to Bro Country and it's all because of Canada (well...one Canadian producer). I also look at music that was popular on the singles charts in 1999 with my friend and mentor Claire Spencer (PD and Mornings on Air 106.1 in Airdrie) and revisit two bands I used to love but have changed opinions on in recent years.

On our last look at New Wave, we take a look at how artists within the genre started deviating from the Pop Direction it was going in. We look at how bands went from New Wave into Industrial, Alternative, and Progressive Rock, and how New Waves Influence stretched into the present.

During Still The Number One; Scott and I look at this week in 2003, right before the Post-Punk Revival took off to see what was popular. We really had no idea it would be this big.

We are on Part 2 of our look into New Wave. This week we examine North America, its connections back and forth between the UK and the States, CBGB, and how Local Music Scenes shaped the sounds of New Wave for the US and Canada. 

For Still The Number 1, Scott Mitchell chose 2013. Compared to the 80's theres a lot of stuff on this singles chart that hasn't aged well at all (In our opinions) but does Macklemore's "Can't Hold Us" still deserve that top spot all these years later?

New Wave is really hard to define. Even with all the exploring I've done this week I'm still blown away by how much diversity this genre has. I bet even if you think New Wave is a dirty word you'll find a new wave band that you'll like. On this episode I show off a bunch of connections in the UK New Wave scene, and explore genre's that are also lumped under New Wave. Scott Mitchell joins me on another "Still The Number 1" where we look at The UK and US album charts for 1980.

Somebody once told you, as great as the movie is. The songs are an overlooked part of Shrek. That somebody was me, now put your finger and your thumb on the play button of this podcast.

Polaroids were Instagram decades before the internet even existed. Each photo like a mini-painting, a one of a kind picture you could hold in your hand and even be altered to your liking with a little trial and error. This week I dive into exactly how much impact Polaroids have on Pop Culture, and it's a lot more than a line from an Outkast Song. First I go over their history with Christopher Bonanos Author of :Instant: The Story of Polaroid" and City Editor for New York Magazine. Leading me to analyzing an album overflowing with Polaroid Imagery and hidden Nostalgia: Taylor Swifts "1989", leading me to taking a look at what was popular that year with Stingray Alberta North Program Director Gruff Gushnowski.

Welcome to the first Episode of The Tim Gavin Show. 

This week we look at the music that was inspired by the Los Angeles Riots of 1992. Such a complicated and intense part of the 90's that sparked a lot of social commentary in music in the months that followed. Still a few aspects I didn't end up covering, but still deserve your attention too.

NOTE: With all the unrest around the Murder of George Floyd and the protests happening around the US. I want to use this platform to help change things for the better. This protest happened for the same reasons the L.A Riots did back in 1992. Because of corruption, and while I didn't go in depth on this podcast I encourage you to become more engaged, examine what went down for yourself, and be a part of the change for the better.
