This Needs To Be Said...

By TNTBS

There is such a need for people to be able to be truthful. We have been tactful all around the world and in the midst of that we want to be accepted, so we conform. Then one day you ask yourself, "What is MY truth?" While digging through a lot of baggage gathered from wanting to belong somewhere and not sure of what you believe, there is a crying out for all those things that should be said that aren't. No longer will WE pretend that there are no issues to address! Or that we are only gonna talk about certain ones. This website is only the beginning of YOU finding YOUR way.

This Needs To Be Read-Healing Our Way Home

This Needs To Be Read-Healing Our Way Home

Mrs. TNTBS Hosts This Needs To Be Read with one of the authors, Valerie Brown about their new book - HEALING OUR WAY HOME - join 3 Black female authors in an intimate discussion of their path to self-care. They live life using the teachings from the late Zen Master who Martin Luther King, Jr. called: “an Apostle of peace and nonviolence” when nominating him for the Nobel Peace Prize. His name is: Zen Master Thich Nhat Han (pronounced: Tik Not Han).

These authors offer up real talk on living joyfully - with reflective self-care practices including meditation practices, culinary recipes, and music playlists. It’s a book that speaks to anyone and everyone.

In 9 accessible bite-sized chapters, authors VALERIE BROWN, MARISELA GOMEZ, MD, AND KAIRA JEWEL LINGO combine insightful, roundtable-style conversations based on the beliefs of Zen Master Thich Nhat Han and what’s called Plum Village Buddhism. This is a school of Buddhism named after the Plum Village Monastery in France and the first monastic practice center founded by Thich Nhat Han.

The authors offer up an immersive reading journey by breaking down how they intertwine their BIPOC experience with grounding meditation and mindfulness exercises.

No subject is off-limits in this approachable pursuit of empowerment, liberation, and what it means to discover a firm sense of self and belonging.

Call-to-actions examined by the authors include:

  • Ancestry and Heritage
  • Home, Place, and Belonging
  • Intimacy and Healing

Put what you learned into practice with:

  • An index of all the book’s mindfulness and meditation practices
  • Curated music playlists to stimulate your mind
  • Culinary recipes designed to replenish the soul

Suggested Questions

  1. VALERIE–before becoming a Dharma teacher, you were a lawyer and lobbyist. How do you think that high-powered background most influenced your teaching methods, and if you could go back in time to teach your previous self, what would be the biggest piece of advice you would give her?
  2. KAIRA–you teach Buddhist mindfulness and meditation all over the globe. What have you noticed as being the largest difference in approach to these studies between students in the United States and those who are abroad?
  3. MARISELA–a major aspect of your work is organizing for equitable and sustainable community rebuilding. For those who are unfamiliar with Sangha (one of the Three Jewels of Buddhism, meaning “spiritual practice community”), can you talk a little about its importance in self-discovery and how it informs social and political activism?
  4. EVERYONE–ultimately, what do you think is the most important thing that readers should take away from Healing Our Way Home?

Mrs. TNTBS celebrate 30 years of Brain Quest Educational Tools

Mrs. TNTBS celebrate 30 years of Brain Quest Educational Tools

Mrs. TNTBS speaks with Karen Edwards Editorial Director of Educational Resources at Workman

I was excited to get this interview because often the things that are promoted are by a paid spokesperson who may not know first hand if a product works. So instead of only looking good sharing a product, I can tell you that I have used these tools with my own children. I'm further excited because my grandchildren will have access to these as well. Tools that help bridge the gaps in learning for our children are gold mines. Here's to building stronger family bonds through learning. #brainquest30years

With more than 56 million copies in print, the Brain Quest brand has continued to touch the lives of children for 3 decades. Loved by kids, trusted by parents, and used and recommended by teachers, it is the curriculum-based brand that makes learning fun. And with the launch of My First Brain Quest, babies and toddlers finally have the opportunity to experience what has made this brand so beloved over the years!

About the spokesperson: KAREN EDWARDS has worked for over 20 years in educational publishing. She started her career as a writer and editor of Prekindergarten through Grade 6 textbooks. She then branched out into creating print and digital resources for children, parents, and educators. Karen joined Workman Publishing in 2018 as senior editor to work on the cornerstone brands Brain Quest and Big Fat Notebook and to develop educational titles that support and excite students on their journey through school. Karen spearheaded the expansion of the Big Fat Notebooks into high school and into a new workbook format. She also oversaw the development of My First Brain Quest, the Brain Quest brand expansion targeting learners 0 – 4 years old, and the 30th-anniversary revision of the Brain Quest workbooks and smart cards. In 2022 Karen was promoted to editorial director of educational resources and has built a team that focuses on creating fun, innovative books that enhance the learning experience of children of all ages

Check out The Noel Diary on Netflix after listening to this interview: Mrs. TNTBS hosts The King of Christmas.

Mrs. TNTBS HOSTS New York Times Bestselling author, The King of Christmas Richard Paul Evans.

This holiday season, the “King of Christmas” (The New York Times) and #1 New York Times bestselling author Richard Paul Evans returns with A CHRISTMAS MEMORY (Gallery Books; on-sale November 22, 2022), a poignant, deeply felt novel about loss, grief, the healing power of forgiveness, and the true meaning of the holiday season.

In A CHRISTMAS MEMORY, Richard Paul Evans delves deep into his childhood memories to take readers back to an age when his world felt like it was falling apart, reminding us that even in the darkest of times, the light of hope can still shine.

It’s 1967, and for young Richard it’s a time of heartbreak and turmoil. Over the span of a few months, his brother, Mark, is killed in Vietnam; his father loses his job and moves the family from California to his grandmother’s abandoned home in Utah; and his parents make the painful decision to separate.

With uncertainty rattling every corner of his life, Richard does his best to remain strong—but when he’s run down by bullies at his new school, he meets Mr. Foster, an elderly neighbor who chases off the bullies and invites Richard in for a cup of cocoa. Richard becomes fast friends with the wise, solitary man who inspires Richard’s love for books and whose dog, Gollum, becomes his closest companion.

As the holidays approach, the joy and light of Christmas seem unlikely to permeate the Evans home as things take a grim turn for the worse. And just when it seems like he has nothing left to lose, Richard is confronted by a startling revelation. But with Mr. Foster’s wisdom and kindness, he learns for the first time what truly matters about the spirit of the season: that forgiveness can heal even the deepest wounds, and love endures long after the pain of loss subsides.

This Needs To Be Read hosts Best-Selling Author Philippa Gregory

This Needs To Be Read hosts Best-Selling Author Philippa Gregory

Historical Fiction is not new, it is something that has drawn my attention for a long time BUT I didn't realize that there is a fun learning history. While Philippa writes fiction, she prides herself on researching for her works for those who read them. I am looking forward to exploring the rest of her catalog of work. Today's interview was more of an introduction to a new world of works we already love. How can you love something before you know it?

In DAWNLANDS (November 8, 2022; Atria Books; $28.99), Philippa continues to uncover unknown women of history, this time bringing us the little-known story of Queen Mary of Modena, King James II’s second wife and, of course, their enemies. With renewed fascination with the British royal family, Philippa provides a unique insight into our history with impeccable research and unforgettable storytelling.

It is 1685, England is on the brink of a renewed civil war against the Stuart kings and many families are bitterly divided. Ned Ferryman cannot persuade his sister, Alinor, that he is right to return from America with his Pokanoket servant, Rowan, to join the rebel army. Instead, Alinor has been coaxed by the manipulative Livia to save the queen from the coming siege. The rewards are life-changing: the family could return to their beloved Tidelands, and Alinor could rule where she was once lower than a servant.

Alinor’s son, Rob, is determined to stay clear of the war, but when he and his nephew set out to free Ned from execution for treason and Rowan from a convict deportation to Barbados, they find themselves enmeshed in the creation of an imposter Prince of Wales—a surrogate baby to the queen.

From the last battle in the desolate Somerset Levels to the hidden caves on the slave island of Barbados, this third volume of an epic story follows a family from one end of the empire to another, to find a new dawn in a world which is opening up before them with greater rewards and dangers than ever before.

This Needs To Be Read hosts author George McCalman

Mrs. TNTBS hosts George McCalman as he gives us a fresh approach to Black History.

In a first of its kind achievement - artist, author, and graphic designer GEORGE MCCALMAN has created a book that reimagines our idea of Black History and brings to the fore a vivid array of pioneers.

Appropriately titled ILLUSTRATED BLACK HISTORY- this is a beautifully illustrated keepsake collection. Each of the 145 Black heroes celebrated in this book is revealed by a dazzling painting or drawing and an insightful short biography of the remarkable pioneer’s contribution to activism, science, politics, business, medicine, technology, food, entertainment, or the arts.

From determining the subjects, to the design of the pages, to illustrating the portraits and images throughout, McCalman has created a book reflective of his subjects who paved the way when no road existed.

McCalman first began crafting the portraits of Black pioneers in honor of Black History Month more than six years ago, an obsessive artistic endeavor that would evolve into a carefully curated collection of soulful portraits celebrating Black icons throughout America’s 400-year-old history. Creating equal space to celebrate legends and discover Black heroes who have gone unseen, McCalman’s comprehensive work features trailblazers we recognize and those we should know. This is American history.

This Needs To Be Read hosts author Giovanni Ruscitti

This Needs To Be Read hosts author Giovanni Ruscitti

With the popularity of websites like Ancestry.com and 23andMe.com…more Americans than ever are seeking out their lineage and heritage…providing special relevance for all North and South Americans whose ancestors have migrated from Asia, Europe, and Africa.

And with more immigrants on the move in Europe due to the war in the Ukraine, the parallels between the mass exodus from Europe during WWII and today are real.

Passionate and deeply moving, Giovanni Ruscitti’s memoir debut, Cobblestones, Conversations, and Corks: A Son’s Discovery of His Italian Heritage, explores his complex relationship with his father; a culture, identity, and upbringing rooted in family, food, and wine; and the revelations of his first visit, at age 46, to his ancestral Italian village that his father left behind after World War II.

Ruscitti explores several themes in this multifaceted memoir that everyone can relate to, including:

  • Identity. Can you truly be from a place you have never experienced or touched? Ruscitti shares how—without really having appreciated and understood it—he had been shaped by his parents’ town of origin and especially by its proud, ambitious men.
  • Fathers and sons. A successful attorney in Colorado, Ruscitti learned many lessons from his father Emiliano, an incredibly skilled carpenter. A common lecture included his saying, “Don’t be afraid. You can do anything.”
  • A love affair with food. While other teenagers hung out and played sports, Ruscitti would accompany his dad to his maternal grandfather Panfilo’s wine cellar a few blocks from his house to make wine, prosciutto, cheeses, and dried sausages, just like in the old country.
  • Living history. The pages of history books came alive as Ruscitti learned of the unimaginable circumstances faced by his family during World War II and its aftermath, and how they truly were part of “The Greatest Generation.”

The Next Generation. This book touches on the next generation who are trying to reacquaint themselves with ancestry and the homeland.

About the Author: Giovanni Ruscitti, Esq., is a first-generation Italian-American who grew up in Frederick, Colorado, a small coal mining town north of Denver that his parents and grandparents immigrated to beginning in the 1950s. A nationally recognized attorney, arbitrator, and mediator, as well as a frequent speaker at national legal events, Giovanni is the Managing Partner of the national law firm Berg Hill Greenleaf Ruscitti, LLP. He holds a degree in Economics and an MBA from the University of Colorado, as well as a JD from Denver University.

In 2022, he was named as one of the most influential business leaders in Colorado and has served on numerous nonprofit boards. He is currently the Chair of the Executive Committee of the Boulder Economic Council and serves on the Board of Directors of the Boulder Chamber of Commerce. Giovanni and his wife of over thirty years, Aggie Blake-Ruscitti, have three adult children, Dante, Donato, and Izabella. Giovanni and Aggie currently live outside Boulder, Colorado, where they enjoy traveling, biking, hiking, yoga, and Italian wines.

If you are a fan of Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit, you will enjoy Orb & Arrow.

Where Magic is Real... and Dangerous

Orb & Arrow: Exploration takes readers on an adventure through Darae where magic is real and dangerous. Twenty-two-year-old Brillar was expected to follow in her mother’s footsteps and become a healer, but headstrong and impetuous, she has other plans. Now a highly skilled archer, she’s forced to kill to free a Mage being held captive in enchanted chains. It was a defensive act, but that is no excuse for a healer.

Releasing a Master War Mage from bondage, however, could get Brillar killed . . . or apprenticed. When Master Elden insists on the latter, Brillar embarks on a journey not of her making. When it ends badly, she insists on taking a different path where her healing and newly acquired magic skills lead to newer and greater challenges.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR - As a journalist, poet and essayist, V.L. has been a writer all her life. She’s also a huge fan of science fiction and fantasy, cutting her teeth on Robert Heinlein as a kid and then discovering the delightful worlds of Anne McCaffrey as an adult. She also got involved in a 16-year-long MMOPRG (massive multiplayer online role-playing game) and Brillar was one of the characters she created for that. When the game ended, she missed it, not just the role-playing but the live interaction with people worldwide. As a result, she sat down at her computer and 24 days and 91,000 words later, the Orb & Arrow series was born. In addition to the Orb & Arrow series, Stuart pens a gardening column for amcostarica.com and Pen It! will shortly release on a nonfiction book based on that column. Originally from New Jersey, Stuart now lives in Costa Rick in the shadow of two volcanoes with her scientist husband and a wacky little dog.

Mrs. TNTBS hosts Author/Activist W. Kamau Bell (part II)

Kamau brings his professional experience as a stand-up comic, TV host, writer, and cultural critic, and his personal experience as a Black man and father. Kate brings her professional experiences as a bestselling author, historian, and high school teacher, along with her personal experiences as a white queer mom and longtime feminist activist. Readers hear from other notable figures in the creative and academic communities including a foreword from Alicia Garza, cofounder of the international Black Lives Matter movement, and lessons from Nikki Jones, professor of African American Studies at UC Berkeley, who explores the crisis of policing in America, and Nathan Alexander, professor of Mathematics at Morehouse College, who shows readers how math can be used to understand—and transform—racist policies.

DO THE WORK! is inclusive but it’s not exhaustive—or the definitive final word on ending racism. Rather, it’s a companion to all the other powerful resources available. The authors give a nod to the likes of How to Be an Antiracist by Ibram X. Kendi; Sister Outsider by Audre Lorde, A Black Women’s History of the United States by Daina Ramey Berry and Kali Nicole Gross, Me and White Supremacy by Layla Saad, and countless other important bodies of work that explore race in America. This is a bridge between the essential reading and the critical action.

Extraordinarily designed by more than 15 BIPOC artists and illustrators and crafted with powerhouse authorship, DO THE WORK! is a revolutionary workbook for anyone looking to make a difference in ending structural and institutional racism through sustained antiracism work, and a reckoning for those struggling to make sense of the histories that got us here.

Mrs. TNTBS hosts Author/Activist Kate Schatz to discuss her new book/workbook DO THE WORK!

Born from the racial and civil rights reckoning that transpired in the aftermath of the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and countless other Black and brown people comes DO THE WORK! An Antiracist Activity Book [Workman Publishing; Paperback; $22.95; July 19, 2022]. Written by Emmy Award–winning sociopolitical comedian W. Kamau Bell and New York Times bestselling author Kate Schatz, DO THE WORK! uses an innovative workbook format to give adults a hands-on understanding of systemic racism—and how we can dismantle it.

One part exploration of systemic racism and one part Brain Quest–inspired educational activity book (but for grown-ups), DO THE WORK! offers guidance through thought-provoking activities rooted in history and contemporary social justice concepts. By design, workbooks are meant to reinforce critical thinking, and DO THE WORK! accomplishes just that with creative, practical, actionable ideas and advice on how to put those ideas into action. Providing a completely unique, immersive lens and equipping readers with tools to analyze and combat systemic racism, it also offers an unbiased look at history—a distinct part of engaging in antiracist work.

In THE HANDLER, Meredith Morris-Dale is a CIA case officer and a damn good one...even if this last mission did go terribly wrong. Now she has been summoned back to Langley where she expects to be fired. Instead, she is met by the Deputy Director with stunning news.

A single well-placed CIA mole in Iran’s uranium enrichment program has kept the terrorist nation from building a bomb by sabotaging the performance of their covert centrifuge arrays. But after losing his daughter in an airliner shootdown, the mole wants out—leaving the world on the brink. His one demand: a reunion with the only handler he ever trusted, John Dale—Meredith's disgraced, fired, wayward ex-husband. As Meredith and John struggle through their fraught relationship, a craven CIA political hierarchy, Russian interference, and the rogue spy’s manipulation, they must reach deep within their shared connection to maintain, recover, or kill the asset.

As a naval intelligence officer with the US Pacific Command—in multiple deployments to the Persian Gulf and Far East—Woodward worked alongside U.S. Special Forces, CIA, and NSA. He is extremely knowledgeable of the subjects he writes about and brings incredible authenticity to the novel.

While this is an intelligence thriller with action, suspense, and geopolitics, the characters are really the story. THE HANDLER features heroic men and women of the U.S. intelligence community at work amid all of life’s messiness—mortgages, divorces, kids, personal shortcomings. New York Times bestselling author Marc Cameron raves THE HANDLER is “a spectacular tale, brimming with intrigue, suspense, and richly-drawn characters. Fantastic storytelling.”

This Needs To Be Read: THE TRUE CRIME FILE Serial Killers, Famous Kidnappings, Great Cons, Survivors & Their Stories, Forensics, Oddities & Absurdities, Quotes & Quizzes C

This week Mrs. TNTBS hosts author, Kim Daly of True Crime File - Compendium

THE TRUE CRIME FILE: Serial Killers, Famous Kidnappings, Great Cons, Survivors & Their Stories, Forensics, Oddities & Absurdities, Quotes & Quizzes - compiled by Kim Daly (Workman Publishing, May 10, 2022) - delivers more than 200 stories of murder, mayhem, and survival.

But this is not your average crime book—Daly, who holds a  master’s degree in English with a focus on trauma studies  and has worked as a rape crisis counselor, gets to the heart of true crime while remaining respectful of the victims. She examines trending and notorious cases in a less salacious, more balanced manner that modern true crime fans will appreciate.

So, while readers familiar with Inventing Anna, The Stranger Beside Me, and This Is a Robbery will find entries on Cassie Chadwick, Ed Kemper, and the 1911 theft of the Mona Lisa, they will also see these stories told with an emphasis on awareness, victim advocacy, and social justice.

From tales of slashers and serial killers, grifters and con artists dogged investigators and miraculous survivors, there is something of interest on every page. Each entry is succinct yet packed with detail, giving needed context for those readers just beginning to explore the thrilling vagaries of true crime while also providing a new lens for fans who have been delving into the subject for years.

As luck would have it, a multi-million-dollar company calls a few months later asking for a meeting to discuss a potential partnership, and London is eager to prove to her sisters, and herself, that she can land this deal. Just when she thinks she has nailed her presentation, the company’s CEO, Jackson Holt, walks in and inserts himself into the meeting. Not only that, but he also happens to be the same guy she turned down at the bar a few months ago.

As they begin to spend more time together, their working relationship blossoms into something more. It isn’t until their professional entanglements are finally over, that London and Jackson are finally ready to take the next step in their relationship. But between Jackson’s secretive past and London’s struggle with her sisters, London must question where she really stands - not just with Jackson, but with the Spark House, too.

Mrs. TNTBS hosts author Glenn Boozan

Mrs. TNTBS hosts author Glenn Boozan

In this episode of This Needs To Be Read, Mrs. TNTBS hosts author Glenn Boozan in her latest book, Moms Way Worse Than You

Every charming rhyme offers a hysterical reality check, as Boozan reminds parents reading along that there are far worse things than fast food for dinner or too much screen time:

·  You won’t be worse than hamster moms, no matter how you try. Sometimes they eat their newborn pups. We still don’t yet know why.

·  Whenever you feel guilty that you haven’t cleaned the house: Sexton beetles raise their kids in a decomposing mouse.

With wit and compassion, Boozan encourages moms to accept that there is no such thing as a perfect parent and to be proud of the everyday effort parenting takes, while reminding readers that it’s the hardest and most rewarding job in the world. And hey, if you’re not feeding your child poop (see koala mom), you are doing a pretty darn amazing job.

About the author: GLENN BOOZAN is an Emmy- and WGA-nominated comedy writer whose credits include Conan, Comedy Central’s Lights Out with David Spade, Sarah Silverman’s I Love You, America on Hulu, and TruTV’s Adam Ruins Everything. She lives in Los Angeles, a 30-minute drive from her mother, which apparently is still too far. Find Glenn on Twitter and Instagram for more.

Mrs. TNTBS hosts Author Carleton Eastlake

Mrs. TNTBS hosts Author Carleton Eastlake in this episode of This Needs To Be Read.

Darkly comic in nature but also deeply philosophical (particularly when it comes to the ridiculous sociology behind human behavior), MONKEY BUSINESS is an astute dissection of the human condition and the bizarre patterns of our everyday lives, both professional and personal. As a longtime screenwriter-producer, former public policy attorney, and past president of PEN Center USA, there is perhaps nobody alive who is as uniquely qualified as Carleton Eastlake to write a novel like this, i.e., one that is one part television industry insider satire, one-part anthropological thesis, and one part literary - if quirky - romance.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR - Carleton Eastlake graduated from UCLA in political science and psychology and from Harvard Law School with a concentration in law and the social sciences. After a career in public policy and consumer protection law, being hired on Steven Spielberg’s series seaQuest confirmed him as a television writer-producer as well. He has shared in Edgar and Saturn awards and is a former board member of the Writers Guild of America West and a past President of PEN Center USA. His wife Loraine Despres is a best-selling novelist, television writer, and tree-farmer. They live in Los Angeles, California.
