It turns out there are many ways OCD can present itself in people and it's not what it looks like on TV. Perhaps even scarier, Leandra began suffering with depersonalization, the mental health disorder that affects your reality and perspective. As she explains, it was the hardest years of her life. How does she manage her OCD, what exactly does depersonalization feel like and how did she treat it? Today Leandra's mental health experiences inspire her lyrics for her band's songs. When an Abusive Partner Becomes a Mass Killer - Vanessa Burns of the James Smith Cree Nation

When an Abusive Partner Becomes a Mass Killer - Vanessa Burns of the James Smith Cree Nation

In September 2022 Vanessa Burns’ partner Myles Sanderson became one of Canada’s most infamous mass killers. He took 11 lives and injured 18 others on the James Smith Cree Nation and nearby town of Weldon Saskatchewan on the morning of September 4. Two of those lives he took were Vanessa’s father Earl Burns Sr. and his own brother Damien Sanderson. Myles even tried to kill his own son and niece. After the killings he went on the run before being ran off the road by police 3 days later. Shortly after being captured he died of an intentional overdose. Vanessa was kind enough to speak with me about her experience as a domestic abuse victim, what she went through that tragic day and the days following, as well as the complexity of grieving the loss of her partner, father of her children, her fathers killer and her abuser. May the victims of this tragedy never be forgotten: Thomas Burns, Carol Burns, Gregory Burns, Lydia Gloria Burns, Bonnie Goodvoice-Burns, Lana Head, Christian Head, Robert Sanderson, Wesley Petterson and Earl Burns Sr. Topics in this episode include abuse, murder, suicide, addiction, generational trauma Please consider buying me a coffee here

EP 11: HOT TAKES on Survivor Enables Belittling of Neurodivergent Cast and How Daylight Savings Time Impacts Mental Health
Nick and Todd are back with more mental health news, ready to dissect the headlines and spark your critical thinking.

A recent Survivor episode included some negative language in labeling a neurodivergent cast member, which was then perpetuated by the online bully mob community. Nick and Todd discuss the nature of the issues and how reality TV gets personal for viewers.
Nick is curious about the impacts of daylight savings time on mental health. Studies show that it has several negative impacts on people's wellness, but does more daylight make it worth it? Todd and Nick discuss the nuances of daylight savings time when Nick experiences it and Todd does not.

Life With a Partner That Needs a 24 Hour Caregiver - Lindsay Kelly

I discovered Lindsay and her family on TikTok as she shares her journey. Not long ago Lindsay had a happy marriage with her loving husband. Together they were raising 6 kids. Overtime she began noticing behaviour changes in her husband, Reid. It wasn't long before he needed full time care for his dementia like symptoms. As a woman in her late 30's it was hard to accept her reality. How does she manage to be a mother and wife under these circumstances? Can you be in love with someone whose character you barely recognize? What self care practises get her through the hard times? Follow Lindsay and her family on TikTok @lindsaywadmankelly

Erin Merelli, a death doula and Lauren Carroll, a funeral director, are the co-creators of Deathwives, a training program for potential death doulas. It may not be a mental health service per se, however it is a service that can provide the prevention of certain mental anguish. How many times have you seen families struggle during a long drawn out or death or a sudden tragic death? Many families don't recover. Many individuals don't recover. What is it about death that we avoid the topic even though we are all going to die? Follow deathwives on Instagram @deathwives or their website deathwives.org/

Growing Up Abused and Unwanted - Brad Keck

Brad Keck grew up in a broken home. He was bounced back and forth between his parents, grandparents and extended family, eventually ending up in a foster group home for children. What happened in all those homes? Why did no one make him feel wanted and how did that affect his adult years? I went to school for a couple years with Brad and always wondered about him. Then one day I saw his name in an article in my local news paper 'Man severely burned in house explosion doubly punished'.

Topics in this episode include abuse, trauma, addiction, depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation

‘Love is Blind’ Nearly Ruined My Life - Nick Thompson

What sounds better than meeting someone, falling in love and marrying them? That's what happened to Nick Thompson on season 2 of the hit Netflix reality series Love is Blind. Nick and his wife quickly realized however, that being on the show wasn't what it was all cracked up to be. They exchanged horror stories of unethical production practices while filming and once the series aired, their lives where under a microscope for the world to criticize, judge and affect. Be sure to listen as Nick 'tells all'.
Nick has created a foundation to support folks from unscripted television show with mental health and legal needs.
