Welcome to the Expert.

This week, the show welcomes Sadia Khan and Dieulita Datus of Ubuntu - Mobilizing Central Alberta, which promotes anti-racism in the community.

The murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis has sparked protests throughout North America, with protests happing in Edmonton, Calgary and Red Deer.

Khan and Datus discuss the importance of these protests and their personal experiences of overt and systemic racism in Central Alberta.

Myles Chykerda, a Lacombe resident, is an archaeologist who has studied extensively in northern Greece.
Today we spoke about his area of interest and the field of archeology as a whole.

Following the 2019 Federal Election, a rise of separatism swept over the western provinces.
The Expert welcomes Charles Adler a long-time Canadian broadcaster who has the pulse pulse on Canadian politics.
Recently on his show Charles Adler Tonight, which is part of the Chorus Radio network, Adler said that Canadians need to be taking western separation seriously.
Charles and I discussed the seeds of western alienation which then bled into a conversation about what divides this country and what could be done to help stitch it back together.

The Expert welcomes to the Secretary-General of Amnesty International Canada Alex Neve — who was in Lacombe just over a year ago as part of Burman University’s Herr Lecture Series.

Neve recently wrote an open letter to Jason Kenney’s UCP government which requested the government back of their Fight Back Strategy — which promotes the interests of Albertas energy sector.

Neve requested in the letter that, amongst other things, Kenney’s government must, “Actively and consistently promote and uphold the rights to freedom of expression, freedom of association and peaceful protest.”

Premier Kenney wrote a fiery response to Neve which included the line “As for your concerns about freedom of expression and association, those rights are not threatened by our government telling the truth about our energy industry. Our intent is to counter misinformation, exaggerations, and outdated information with facts and evidence. “

Today we talk to Neve about that back and forth with Alberta’s premier — as well as what Amnesty International Canada is doing both nationally and internationally.

This episode of The Expert welcomes back Burman University Political Scientist Marc Froese to discuss the results of the Canadian Federal Election.
The discussion focuses on the results of each party and where they go from here.

The fourth episode of The Expert features a discussion with Sean Holman, a journalism instructor at Mount Royal University and a former award-winning journalist with the Vancouver Sun and and 24 Hours Vancouver.
Holman has been extensively researching how journalists are covering the current climate crisis and how that needs to change going forward.
This discussion focuses on the challenges of reporting on climate change and how that coincides with reporting on free speech.

Joe Whitbread is co-owner of Jo(E) Social Media in Lacombe and he is well known in the social media broadcasting, public speaking world.
Through his company, Jo(E) speaks with hundreds of businesses, organizations and schools on issues related to social media.
This episode touches on the cultural ramifications of social media and how that has touched people's lives both online and off.

This is the second episode of The Expert,
Byron Hackett is the sports reporter for the Red Deer Advocate and covers hockey extensively in Central Alberta.
This podcast touches on the Red Deer Rebels, the AAA Lacombe Generals, the Eckville Eagles, sports officiating, the World Juniors the Edmonton Oilers and the Calgary Flames.

This is the first episode of The Expert, a podcast produced by Black Press Media Prairie Division, which focusses on discussions about the the world around us from a Central Alberta perspective.
The intent is to not only illuminate vibrant regional voices, but also provide a wide array of perspectives on news, sports, politics, entertainment and social justice.
The first episode of The Expert is a discussion with Burman University Professor Marc Froese who is an instructor in politicial science and international law. Froese recently published his book Sovereign Rules and the Politics of International Economic law.
