I’ve followed Tom’s work for a while now and his use of obstacle courses to develop athleticism in children is something that particularly caught my eye as we spoke about:
· The concept of being a good mover, how this might look different in strength and conditioning settings v sport settings and how to find the sweet spot in between
· Whether strength and conditioning coaches inadvertently feed the beast that is early specialisation
· Progression through complexity vs load and how to strike the balance between the two

Kelvin has over 55 years experience in coaching and teaching, in a career that spans working with school children all the way up to national and international champions across multiple sports. Any coach who has the ability to distil their concepts and thought processes from the elite of the elite down to a school level will always be worth listening to in my opinion, and today’s podcast was no exception as I got Kelvin’s thoughts on:
· The logistical issues with assessing physical literacy (and how Kelvin would deal with these)
· Why the journey towards personal well-being and the Olympic podium involve the same 4 pillars
· Kelvin’s long-term development model for children, how this moves from general, to sports related to sport specific, and why behavioural outcomes are an overlooked but ever-present aspect of the education process

Episode 26-The Disciplined Pursuit of Less but Better with Greg McKeown
In episode 26 of the Platform to Perform Podcast I had the absolute pleasure of interviewing a New York Times best seller and author of one of my favourite books, Greg McKeown.
In a world where more, more, more is constantly espoused as the golden ticket to success, in Greg’s book Essentialism, he advocates for the disciplined pursuit of less. Greg details the systems that will allow you to do less but better, and explains how doing so will catapult your productivity with your wealth, health, and relationships.
In today's podcast myself and Greg discussed:
· How to reduce decision fatigue
· How to develop an essentialist mindset in children
· How to systematise your way to getting more of the right things done

Episode 25-Why the Sport Model of P.E is Broken with Ross Williams
In episode 25 of the Platform to Perform Podcast I interviewed Head of Athletic Development of St Davids College in Llandudno, Ross Williams.
With 40% of pupils at St Davids College having dyspraxia, Ross has some refreshing views on how to reinvigorate the P.E curriculum in a way that is accessible to all pupils, whilst not simply accepting participation numbers as the sole metric that the school’s P.E program is having success.
In my humble opinion, Ross’ views of how physical education should be delivered within a school are WELL ahead of the game, as we discussed:
· Why the traditional sport-focused model of P.E is broken
· How to tweak sessions for pupils with reluctances towards specific movements
· Stealing ideas from computer games to ramp up the popularity of P.E

Episode 24-Peaking, choking & checklists with Dan John
In episode 24 of the Platform to Perform Podcast I had the absolute pleasure of speaking to one of my strength and conditioning idols, Dan John. His books are the only ones I have re-read, yet each time I learn something that impacts my coaching practice the next day. Dan personifies the art of keeping things simple (just don’t confuse simple for easy) for athletic populations, real-world people, and everyone in between. Dan’s 40+ years of experience in coaching, competing and writing has developed an ability to story tell which is second to none, with today's podcast being no exception. Amongst other topics, in today’s podcast, we delved into Dan’s thoughts on:
· How to know when you are dealing with an authority figure
· How to program sessions to minimise choking
· What the textbooks don’t tell you about ‘peaking’
Resources Mentioned in the Podcast:

Episode 15-Avoiding the Sucker Mindset with The Mindful Mover
In episode 15 of the Platform to Perform Podcast I spoke with the brains behind The Mindful Mover, Phillip and Martina Chubb.
I first came across their work on Instagram, where their training footage was flying in the face of conventional wisdom, as they were achieving incredible feats such as planche push ups and one arm chin ups…and then posting about training once a week.
As if this wasn’t impressive enough, other feats such as back squatting just shy of double bodyweight, dropping into the middle splits (both of which without any warm up) and my personal favourite, a handstand push up…on gymnastics rings…meant I was desperate to get these two on.
With a passion for training so wide, the conversation flowed effortlessly as I got The Mindful Mover’s thoughts on:
- How to work towards ‘The Big 5’ – exercises which provide the largest amount of ‘free gains’ to other movements without specifically training for them
- Training for mobility, how to develop it once and avoid wasting time on ‘dedicated’ mobility sessions
- What the sucker mindset is, and how to avoid it (and other biases)
- How Phillip and Martina have dispelled myths with their training, such as making improvements in skill and strength when training once a week, achieving static skills, such as a straddle planche, despite never training isometrically (i.e. using static movements)

I first came across Harry’s work on Instagram, with his Mini Movers (5-8 year olds), KidFit (9-12 year olds) and his weekly YAD Academy challenges catching my eye.
On today’s episode I wanted to get Harry’s thoughts on:
- What has caused Australia’s 70% increase in injuries requiring knee reconstruction in the past 15 years
- Coaching considerations when dealing with kids as young as 5 years old
- How he helps develop a growth mindset in the youth athletes he works with

Episode 13-Powerlifting for the Non-Powerlifter with Charlie Keen
In episode 13 of the Platform to Perform Podcast I spoke with my Powerlifting coach, Charlie Keen, on 'Powerlifting for the Non-Powerlifter.'
Both of us were eager to discuss topics that would be relevant to both strength and conditioning coaches and sports coaches, rather than simply discussing the intricacies of training for a Powerlifting competition.
With that in mind, Charlie and I discussed the following topics:
- Coach-athlete relationships (and how these impact the training written by a coach)
- The biopsychosocial model for pain
- How to create mindfulness in your athlete's training
- The overuse and misapplication of technology in training
- The controversy and limitations of online training

Episode 12-S&C for the Youth Tennis Athlete with Daz Drake
In episode 12 of the Platform to Podcast I spoke with my first guest from the sport of tennis, Daz Drake.
Daz Drake has been a professional coach since 2000 and specialises in Youth fitness and Tennis. He is the owner of Athletic Performance Academy (APA) which amongst other things has been providing Strength & Conditioning coaching to Gosling Tennis Academy since 2005. In that time he has had the pleasure to work with some of the best junior tennis players in the world including four players who have been ranked inside the Top 100 WTA or ATP tour.
In today's podcast we discussed:
-How Daz helps develop up and coming S&C coaches
-Daz's 6 stage pathway for developing athletes from young children into professional tennis players
-The framework of each of these 6 stages and what Daz feels are the most appropriate methods to develop specific physical qualities

Episode 11-Considerations for Scholastic Athlete Tom Green
In episode 11 of the Platform to Perform podcast I spoke with Tom Green.
I first met Tom at James Baker and Mike Young's LTAD conference in Gloucester, and was keen to learn more about the S&C program he runs as part of his current role as the Head of Athletic Development at St Peters RC High School.
As well as the school environment, Tom is also as an academy S&C coach at West Bromwich Albion and Premier League Rugby club, Worcester Warriors, which is why I wanted to talk about the differences in cultures of a school environment compared to professional academy set ups in football and rugby.
Besides his coaching roles, Tom is also the youth researcher for Science for Sport, so is well versed when it comes to understanding both research and how to translate the science into coaching practice
During the podcast, I picked Tom's brains on:
-Incorporating gymnastics and parkour into S&C as a means of combating the limited movement skills that may result from early specialisation
-Managing cognitive stress within a school S&C program around exam periods
-Why he has found gameplay to be more effective at developing speed in school athletes compared to more 'traditional' speed program

I first came across Shane in 2017, where he presented his thoughts on core training for the youth athlete, at James Baker's Child to Champion Conference.
I totally forgot I was hosting a podcast for large portions of today's episode as myself and Shane discussed:
-How to extend your influence beyond how your youth athletes behave in the S&C sessions
-The importance of the often overlooked perceptual motor skills in building a youth athlete's foundation
-How to modify game play to stretch and develop the movement toolbox of youth athletes

On episode 9 of the Platform to Perform Podcast, I had my first guest from the world of football, one of Aston Villa Football Club's first team Strength and Conditioning Coaches, Paddy Moore.
Paddy and I discussed:
-Checking your ego and understanding where strength and conditioning coaches fit in the high-performance puzzle
-Positional profiling in football and how to ensure the physical qualities being developed align with how the manager wants the team to play
-Contextual sprinting, and how to develop speed that can be seen on a pitch where it matters, and just not with the timing gates We also describe coach burnout, gratitude and how social media, for all its positives, can actually be a detriment to your own readiness to perform as a coach

Episode 7-Teaching vs Coaching with Ben Lucas
In episode 7 of the Platform to Perform Podcast, I spoke with languages teacher, sports coach and a good friend of mine, Ben Lucas.
Ben gave me the opportunity to coach abroad, in a foreign language, which is something I believe can develop your ability to say only what is absolutely necessary.
Among many pedagogical, coaching and education based topics, in this episode, we discuss:
-what Ben sees as the problems in the way we assess education (and how he would remedy this)
-how sports coaching has impacted his ability to teach in the classroom (and vice versa)
-what separates good coaches from great ones (spoiler alert...it's not technical expertise)

Episode 1-Practical Applications for the Conditioning of Boxers
When I competed as an amateur boxer I made so many conditioning mistakes I am keen to help you avoid, including:
- Not understanding how to sequence my conditioning training to compliment my boxing
- Not understanding why training methods to use (or why!)
- Overtraining and under recovering
Having gained experience as part of the GB Boxing S&C team in the build up to the Rio 2016 Olympics, this podcast is my way of presenting what I learned in order to stop you making the same mistakes I did
