Josh Kemble - The Dogwood Way
Josh Kemble is someone who instantly strikes me as having two of my favorite qualities, mindfulness and authenticity. Combined, they give the experience of being present in a conversation while able to tie in multiple layers of meaning. It's almost as if Josh is aware of the experience he is creating in others, and that's key in crafting music or art that is going to connect with people. From the stories I've heard over the year and the way they are discussed, and from a few conversations I've had with Josh, it's obvious that Dogwood was a very self- aware and principled band whose micro-culture navigated the emergence of the San Diego pop punk scene of the late 90’s, and then was able to become part of the canon of important artists in our scene. Matt Pryor of The Get Up Kids: Pioneer in a Parallel Universe
In 1995, The Get Up Kids began exploring their surroundings and expanding their horizons in much the way that early Tooth & Nail and Solid State artists did. In the midwest emo scene, they were sharing the stages with bands of seemingly all genres, while making friends in many other states. They didn’t ask permission for what they did, and no one stopped them from blazing new pathways that would connect the regional underground scenes together and really open up the all-ages movement.  Matt Pryor, TGUK frontman, currently hosts a Vagrant Records podcast series celebrating 25 years of Vagrant releases. This conversation with Matt gives us a great opportunity to look at the Christian piece of the all-ages scene through the eyes of a personality similar to many on this show, but also with an outsider’s perspective. Uncle Mark
Mark Salomon is a legend and forefather of the Tooth & Nail scene. He was pioneering new artistic and cultural territory while being iconic, professional and a showman  all at the same time.  He has been massively influential from The Crucified and Stavesacre to Neon Horse and his podcast, Never Was, and his reputation for having solid personal relationships across decades with so many other legends. What a rock singer, a podcaster, and great relationships all have in common is the ability to connect & communicate ideas from your mind though your voice.  Everyone loves Mark's voice regardless of what he is doing. If it is his voice expressing his mind, it just works. Steve Kleisath- Bizzaro
Welcome back to labeled, the stories rumors and legends of tooth and nail records, I’m your host Matt carter and today’s episode features the not only legendary but iconic drummer Steve Kleisath from Strong arm, Shai Halud, further seeems forever, and the darling fire.   He is a legend because he had tremendous  influence on records that were tremendously influential and his style inspired many.  He is iconic because he comes in a package that’s different than you might expect.  He  plays left handed on a reverse setup drum kit and plays quirky parts that seem to come from another dimension.  This on top of the fact that Steve has become an a expert at many things including poker and holding world record video game scores.  He clearly has a special mind that accesses information and makes decisions in a uniqe way that has had a big impact.  I’ve never spoken to Steve and was very happy to have the opportunity to explore his mind a bit and I think you will enjoy that too.  Strong-arm - council of perfection,  slick shoes - rusty,  stretch arm strong - all we’ve lost,  Velour 100 - Your Sky Labeled Fest https://bit.ly/2UIHYbW Emo Night https://bit.ly/3BBNiym

Terminal: A False Start
Terminal can be described in many ways. One and Done, One Hit Wonder, Casualty of the industry, a career that seemed over before it began. Similar to Beloved in many ways, with a single album destined for an explosive followup the bands had seemingly failed before their future fanbase could materialize. The bands were able to achieve great things quickly, but weren’t equipped to handle being a touring band. Had they made it just a little further, big things were likely to happen. But instead the band stopped, the members grew up, grew as people, and learned how to be friends. A tragedy and celebration brought the band back and they've become an active again. So its very cool to be experiencing new beginning for Terminal. Travis Bryant is an exceptional vocalist and front man who brings real vulnerability to his music and to this conversation, I hope you will get as much from it as I did.     Promo Code: LABELED https://www.seetickets.us/event/Emeryland-presents-Labeled-Fest/437983   Emery: The Question Live Event http://bit.ly/3yGQtmO   Song List: Terminal - Wisher Embodyment - The Narrow Scope of Things Julianna Theory - Into the Dark Luti Kriss - The 'Anni Hilat' Ion Beloved - Failure on my Lips Underoath - When The Sun Sleeps (Live - 2003 - Pre-spencerpost-dallas) Terminal - How the Lonely keep the Lovely Terminal - Dark

Hopesfall: A Should've been Solidstate Band
Hopesfall is a very influential post hardcore/spirit filled hardcore band. They emerged in the North Carolina scene and the greater Southeast with bands like Beloved, Stretch Armstrong, he is legend, Underoath and Luti-Kriss around 2000. they were a Furnacefest band and a Cornerstone band.   They were signed to Takehold Records who was acquired by Tooth and Nail in 2003 but due to some changes in the bands lineup and other factors, Hopesfall rejected the opportunity to be on Solidstate at that time and was allowed to instead sign to Trustkill records.    This conversation begins with me and Brandon Ebel talking about how he wanted Hopesfall, but it wasn't meant to be.     LABELED FEST: https://bit.ly/2WbN29h Use promo code: LABELED for 20% off   Music in this episode... Joe Musten is the heartbeat of Beloved. He is known for doing all the lead screaming while being an absolutely brutal drummer. Chad Johnson- The Schemer
Chad Johnson is a significant figure in this movement who was identifying next level talent that was yet to reach its potential and creating opportunities for them. He was quite successful in aggregating and attracting further talent primarily in the southeast region. Further Seems Forever, Underoath, twothirtyeight, hopesfall, and more. He created Furnace Fest which became in addition to Cornerstone, a Mecca and pilgrimage to legendary experience. His record label, Takehold Records, was acquired by Tooth & Nail in the early 2000's where Chad was A&R for many of the largest bands on the label. He left Tooth & Nail to start Come and Live! in 2009 and now has revived Furnace Fest in 2021.   https://labeledpodcast.com/ Support Labeled on Patreon Join Labeled on Facebook www.furnacefest.us SONGS YOU HEARD ON THIS EPISODE: twothirtyeight- Coin Laundry Loser Underoath - A Boy Brushed Red Live mewithoutyou- January 1979 Showbread- Mouth Like a Magazine Underoath- Never Meant to Break Your Heart   MORE FROM TOOTH & NAIL: * Labeled: Music From The Podcast: smarturl.it/labeledplaylist * DISCOVER IT: New Tracks from T&N Records: smarturl.it/TNNDiscover * This Is Solid State: New Tracks from Solid State Records: https://spoti.fi/2CUCsaH * Tooth & Nail Store (LABELED Patreon members get 20% off everything): tnn.lnk.to/store

One the first releases ever on Solid State, Stretch Armstrong were pioneers of the scene that was emerging in the southeast in the late 90’s. Known for being straight edge and positive, Chris McLaine was one of the most engaging front men of the era. His message was always to include and to encourage and to make a positive impact. Big Shoes To Fill: Scott Mellinger of Zao
Scott Mellinger joined the legendary band Zao to replace Brett Detar as a musician between the albums, When Blood and Fire Bring Rest and Liberate Te Ex Inferis. He immediately brought a new sonic element helping them arrive at their signature sound, but his influence didn't stop there. Despite being in a band with big personalities, Scott emerged as a leader and became the band's stabilizing point guard. Zao's streak of longevity was truly unexpected given their early years and the amount of environmental change that has occurred since the late ’90s, making them about as legendary as it gets in our world. "Git Snake Bit" with The Showdown
The Showdown is a very special band who was able to break a lot of new ground and turn a lot of heads by taking what was going on in heavy music and amplifying it to extreme levels by adding new layers of performance that mixed art and crowd interaction with humor to create a symphony of chaos that played the audience like an instrument. Their front man David Bunton is a legend in the scene when it comes to stage persona. Tooth & Nail All Purpose All Star: Randy Torres
Lead singers tend to get and often deserve the most attention in most bands. They carry a large burden and the spotlight is not at all easy to manage, but some of the most talented and valuable people are not the ones in the limelight. Randy Torres has done it all in the Tooth & Nail world, and he has done it well.  Guitarist for Project 86, engineer for Aaron Sprinkle, A&R for the label, touring musician for Anberlin, composer, sound designer and more.  Coming from a supportive environment in SoCal at just the right time in the late 90's, Randy has been able to make a great career for himself and that career is marked mainly by how personable and likable and easy to work with he is. Slick Shoes: Are You Crazy? (Full Band)
Slick Shoes is back and full of new life. It's not uncommon for bands to reunite these days, but it's often just to play through an old album or do a reunion tour. Occasionally, reuniting bands put out new music. Some times that music is good, but rarely does it capture the full original spirit or energy of the band's former youthful self, but in this case, Slick Shoes has in fact done that. It has been 17 years since their last album, and the new music is killer. 2003 was pretty much the year that the Tooth & Nail scene had fully completed its generational change from punk and pop punk to the rising emo and screamo. This conversation with the full band really helps to paint the picture of that transition. The Juliana Theory: Part One
The Juliana Theory’s biggest album, Emotion Is Dead, one of the most legendary in the Tooth & Nail catalog, just reached its 20 year anniversary. This episode explores the conditions in which the band and particularly the frontman Brett Detar emerged.   The western Pennsylvania/ West Virginia scene, from which Zao and The Juliana Theory are from is another hot spot that emerged and connected to the wider scene in the late 90’s in part by connecting to the Arkansas scene with Barry Poynter through Bruce from Living Sacrifice.   Bret was the guitarist in Zao, and lead singer for The Juliana Theory. Both wildly successful 90’s groups and often listed among the favorites of bands of the subsequent generation, many of whom were known for fusing hardcore with sad emo elements and learning how to tie it together in a way that could reach an even wider audiences with some pop appeal. Ninety Pound Wuss: A Cred Band in a Pop Punk World
Ninety Pound Wuss formed in 1994 just down the road from MxPx, and became one of the first bands on the label. The Seattle indie scene at the time was quite artistic and developed compared to the rest of the country, it could easily be described as snobby. Bands like Ninety Pound Wuss and Roadside Monument had a very difficult fight to prove their legitimacy in the eyes of their peers and to get the opportunities they deserved, so being associated with and dropped into the Christian pop punk subculture gave them great exposure but came at a cost.   This was an in person conversation and features Jeff and Marty from Ninety Pound Wuss, and legend Matt Johnson from Blenderhead, Roadside Monument, and Ninety Pound Wuss.     https://labeledpodcast.com/ Support Labeled on Patreon  Join Labeled on Facebook Pre-order / pre-save Lightworker’s "Fury By Failure," out June 12th :: http://lightworker.ffm.to/fury Follow Lightworker on Spotify :: https://spoti.fi/3fZm8XD   SONGS YOU HEARD ON THIS EPISODE: Ninety Pound Wuss “Something Must Break” Ninety Pound Wuss “Perserverence” Norma Jean - “I Used to Hate Cell Phones But Now I Hate Car Accidents” Live at Cornerstone ’02 Blenderhead “Bottle Breaker” Extol

Cross Pollination with the Scandinavian Metal Scene
Tooth & Nail goes global in the mid 90’s by acquiring and licensing Christian metal bands from Norway: Extol, Lengsel, and Selfmindead.  This episode explores how kids growing up on the other side of the world were having parallel experiences to kids here with regards to discovering heavy music and finding identity amidst struggles with authority and religion, and in just the same way, great and influential music was created to express those feelings that resonated with others. We've traveled quite a long way to get here, and today we reach the high watermark. It's a couple of decades of community building, talent compiling, large technological leaps, an exploding genre, a sharp and well oiled indie label, the perfect band (Underoath), at the perfect time, and all of that backed and supercharged by a multi-billion dollar global cooperation.   This episode covers Underoath's 2006 album, "Define The Great Line," with guitarist Tim McTauge and features Brandon Ebel.     https://labeledpodcast.com/ Support Labeled on Patreon  Join Labeled on Facebook   SONGS YOU HEARD ON THIS EPISODE: Underoath "In Regards to Myself" Underoath "Salmarnir" Underoath "Everyone Looks So Good From Here" Underoath "In Regards to Myself" Underoath "Casting Such a Thin Shadow" Underoath "Writing On The Walls"    MORE FROM TOOTH & NAIL: * Labeled: Music From The Podcast: smarturl.it/labeledplaylist * DISCOVER IT: New Tracks from T&N Records: smarturl.it/TNNDiscover * This Is Solid State: New Tracks from Solid State Records: https://spoti.fi/2CUCsaH    * Tooth & Nail Store (LABELED Patreon members get 20% off everything): tnn.lnk.to/store

Underoath: Kids From Florida
Chapter 24 There is no question that Underoath is the biggest Christian heavy band of our scene. They completely broke the ceiling of what was assumed was possible beyond our scene, but what are all the factors that go into a landmark success story like that of Underoath? In a sense, this podcast so far is a list and account of many of those factors, or maybe it's just "They’re Only Chasing Safety" was directly born out of the Tooth & Nail culture. It was a perfect wave that had been built by thousands of people collaborating and supporting one another and as they grew and gained momentum, the wave was ready to break, and Underaoth was the perfect band to harness its energy and break our scene wide open into the mainstream and become Tooth & Nail's biggest rock band to date. My favorite viewpoint for this story is that of Tim McTague's, who at that time was something like Underoath's quarterback. Not only is he a giant of an artist and musician, but at age 21, he took the responsibility to handle their business. As we have seen in this series, the biggest pitfalls are often managing the managers, agents, labels, lawyers, promoters, pressure from other bands, and fans, all of whom desperately want something from the band, and in Underoath's case, turn the intensity of all that up about 10x, starting with the release of "They're Only Chasing Safety."   https://labeledpodcast.com/ Support Labeled on Patreon  Join Labeled on Facebook   SONGS YOU HEARD ON THIS EPISODE: Underoath "A Boy Brushed Red Living in Black and White" Zao "Times of Separation" Strongarm "Suplication" Underoath "There Could Be Nothing After This" Underoath "When the Sun Sleeps" Underoath "A Message for Adrienne" Live Underoath "Young and Aspiring" Underoath "It's Dangerous Business Walking Out Your Front Door" Underoath "Young and Aspiring" Live Underoath "Salmarnir"    MORE FROM TOOTH & NAIL: * Labeled: Music From The Podcast: smarturl.it/labeledplaylist * DISCOVER IT: New Tracks from T&N Records: smarturl.it/TNNDiscover * This Is Solid State: New Tracks from Solid State Records: https://spoti.fi/2CUCsaH    * Tooth & Nail Store (LABELED Patreon members get 20% off everything): tnn.lnk.to/store

The Devil Wears Prada is the type of band that if you didn’t know any better, you might confuse them for a career-long Solid State artist, with good reason. They grew up as fans of the label, started a terrific band, did the  first decade and a half of their career on other labels, and now, at last, they are in fact a Solid State band. Beloved: One and Done
Chapter 23.1 Beloved’s 2003 debut, "Failure On," is a legendary album in the Solid State Records catalog. They had so much in their favor: made a flawless debut record, had an incredibly promising trajectory, had all been friends since childhood, and described themselves as family, were respected in the scene that was exploding and supportive, and were a priority to the best record label in the Christian heavy music space in the middle of its most powerful moment. Dusty Redmond gives his point of view as to how after just a few tours, and amid the anticipation of the entire scene for their follow up record, the Beloved train was derailed. Since then, Beloved has existed in conversations in greenrooms, tour busses, and record industry people as a “what if” band. There were occasionally feint rumors of possible reunions, but alas, after nearly 15 years, most people have given up hope. You would think that it would take something extraordinary to stop the incredible momentum that Beloved had in 2004, but some things can be both powerful and fragile at the same time.   https://labeledpodcast.com/ Support Labeled on Patreon  Join Labeled on Facebook   SONGS YOU HEARD ON THIS EPISODE: Beloved “Only our Faces Hide” Strongarm “Council of Perfection” Selfmindead “Always” Fair “Carelessness” Beloved “Rise and Fall Beloved “Allure” Beloved “Kiss it Goodbye” Beloved “Insult to Injury” Beloved “Failure On My Lips” Advent “Hanging The Giants” Beloved “Death to Traitors”    MORE FROM TOOTH & NAIL: * Labeled: Music From The Podcast: smarturl.it/labeledplaylist * DISCOVER IT: New Tracks from T&N Records: smarturl.it/TNNDiscover * This Is Solid State: New Tracks from Solid State Records: https://spoti.fi/2CUCsaH    * Tooth & Nail Store (LABELED Patreon members get 20% off everything): tnn.lnk.to/store

Dead Poetic: Disappointed with Success
Chapter 21 Dead Poetic is one of the bands that was discovered at cornerstone, and due to their hard work and dedication as kids, stepped into just the right place at just the right time.  The groundwork had been laid by the pioneers of the scene, the infrastructure was in place, and Tooth & Nail, partnered with EMI was at the top of the mountain.  Killer production, promotion, and exposure were no problem at all, and the specific sound that Dead Poetic had been developing was about to explode.  The band would achieve success, sales, and opportunities that would dwarf most of the artists that preceded them. Cory Brandan: Band Dude for Life
Chapter 18 This isn't a Norma Jean episode per se, because of Norma Jean’s legend and significance in the heavy music scene. SolidState and Tooth & Nail history is much too large to begin to cover in an episode, so we will cover it from a variety of angles over time. But as far as Norma Jean goes, Cory Brandan is certainly a very central figure, and his career in this scene intersects multiple important bands and he is one of the very few individuals that has been able to find a way to thrive (although sometimes merely survive) and contribute for 20 years.  Cory has been able to find or create  paths when it seemed that none existed. What's even more hard to imagine is that Cory stayed focused on creating music and found his way despite the fact that by 1994 at the age of 18 he had already had his first child.  I talked to Cory about his journey and mindset beginning with his first band Eso Charis, his connection to Living Sacrifice, and how he eventually became the leader of the almighty Norma Jean.     https://labeledpodcast.com/ Support Labeled on Patreon  Join Labeled on Facebook   SONGS YOU HEARD ON THIS EPISODE: Norma Jean "Vertabraille" Eso Charis "Born With a Future" Living Sacrifice "Reborn Empowered" Eso Charis "The Narrowing List" Living Sacrifice "Imminent War" Empty "From a Chemist's Point of View" Norma Jean "The Human Face Divine" Norma Jean "The Shotgun Message" Norma Jean "1,000,000 Watts" Norma Jean "Blueprints for a Future Home"    MORE FROM TOOTH & NAIL: * Labeled: Music From The Podcast: smarturl.it/labeledplaylist * DISCOVER IT: New Tracks from T&N Records: smarturl.it/TNNDiscover * This Is Solid State: New Tracks from Solid State Records: https://spoti.fi/2CUCsaH    * Tooth & Nail Store (LABELED Patreon members get 20% off everything): tnn.lnk.to/store

Raw Rock Kills
Chapter 17 Showbread is one of the bands that was able to follow in the footsteps of the bands who pioneered the music scene that we all love. There was a very special time when the market was not overcrowded with touring musical acts, but the scene was established enough that there was a great hunger for independent and expressive music. If you had a message, some talent, and were really willing to sacrifice, you could be a touring band. Even without a label or fans, you could get shows and win fans. And if you did that, perhaps a label would notice. It was a very open-minded and supportive time. If you were a Christian kid looking to have some artistic boundaries broken from your conformist upbringing and you like raw music, Showbread might just kill you.   AD || Zip Recruiter ziprecruiter.com/LABELED   https://labeledpodcast.com/ Support Labeled on Patreon  Join Labeled on Facebook   SONGS YOU HEARD ON THIS EPISODE: Showbread "Your Friends are Fake" Showbread "I am a Machine Gun" 90 LB Wuss "Blank Stare" Joy Electric "Chapter 1, The White Song Book" Selfmindead "Liar" Showbread "Mouth Like a Magazine" Showbread "So Selfish It's Funny" Showbread "Oh! KJ-52 and BEC Recordings
Chapter 16 KJ-52 is a Christian rapper who struggled to get his career off the ground in the 90’s after being rejected by his dream label and dropped early on by a major label and then found his home among the rest of us punk, DIY and hardcore folks.  KJ embodies many of the same values that we often discuss here but his music fit much better in the BEC and CCM worlds so he is a terrific individual to help us understand the similarities and differences in that world and the one we spend most of our time in. BEC recordings is the CCM (Contemporary Christian Music) leaning imprint of Tooth & Nail Records and plays a very important role in expanding the company, generating revenue, and enabling Tooth & Nail/Solid State to have a larger and more competent staff.  Admittedly CCM music has a reputation for being cheesy or unoriginal, but like most things, if you look closer you will find that there is much more nuance than you’d expect.   AD || Citizens "Fear" Tour https://wearecitizens.net/   https://labeledpodcast.com/ Support Labeled on Patreon  Join Labeled on Facebook   SONGS YOU HEARD ON THIS EPISODE: KJ-52 "KJ-52" Strongarm "Supplication" John Ruben "Devine Inspiration" KJ-52 "Are You Real" Anberlin "Love Song" Thousand Foot Krutch "Wish You Well" Jeremy Camp "Understand" Demon Hunter "Summer of Darkness" KJ-52 "Right Here' KJ-52 "Wake Up" KJ-52 "Dear Slim" KJ-52 "1230"    MORE FROM TOOTH & NAIL: * Labeled: Music From The Podcast: smarturl.it/labeledplaylist * DISCOVER IT: New Tracks from T&N Records: smarturl.it/TNNDiscover * This Is Solid State: New Tracks from Solid State Records: https://spoti.fi/2CUCsaH    * Tooth & Nail Store (LABELED Patreon members get 20% off everything): tnn.lnk.to/store

She assisted and worked with Jim Worthen and also became Brandon's Personal Assistant, she lived in a communal house with other Tooth & Nail employees, and she was around through the biggest staff and culture change in the company, driven in part by the merger with EMI, the shift in genres, and the success of BEC Records.   Ad || Zip Recruiter: ziprecruiter.com/LABELED   https://labeledpodcast.com/ Support Labeled on Patreon  Join Labeled on Facebook   SONGS YOU HEARD ON THIS EPISODE: Underoath "When the Sun Sleeps" Roadside Monument "Oh So Fabled" Beloved "Death To Traitors" Underoath "It's Dangerous Business Walking Out Your Front Door" mewithoutYou "Nice and Blue" Joy Electric "(I Am) Made From The Wire" Slow Coming Day "Captivated" The Dingees "Carry On With The Countdown"    MORE FROM TOOTH & NAIL: * Labeled: Music From The Podcast: smarturl.it/labeledplaylist * DISCOVER IT: New Tracks from T&N Records: smarturl.it/TNNDiscover * This Is Solid State: New Tracks from Solid State Records: https://spoti.fi/2CUCsaH    * Tooth & Nail Store (LABELED Patreon members get 20% off everything): tnn.lnk.to/store

Chapter 13 We now continue to move into the 2000’s era of Tooth & Nail Records. Brandon has sold half of the company to EMI and has purchased and absorbed Takehold Records, which brought its founder Chad Johnson on staff. Heavy music was continuing to explode, but also, in keeping with the Tooth and Nail style, Brandon and the staff continued to try to break and include a very wide variety of artists, including a very happy and poppy rock outfit from San Luis Obispo, CA, called Watashi Wa. August Burns Red: Constellations 10 Year Anniversary
August Burns Red is one of the Labeled listeners' favorite Tooth and Nail/Solid State bands, and statistically, that's not surprising. They have sold, get this, over 2 million records. It would be no understatement to say they are one of the most successful acts that ever came out of this scene. So to celebrate the 10 year anniversary of the landmark album Constellations, I thought it would be great to see how they got into the Tooth and Nail culture in the first place, and connect the dots from the tiny house shows and basements that laid the groundwork and infrastructure that August Burns Red would step into and take to a whole new level.  I got to chat with guitarist JB Brubaker and drummer Matt Greiner the other day and had a great time. This episode is a look at what it means to have been a first generation Tooth and Nail Kid, aspiring to participate in the culture you loved.   SPONSOR LINK: Zip Recruiter: ziprecruiter.com/LABELED   https://labeledpodcast.com/ Support Labeled on Patreon   Join Labeled on Facebook   SONGS YOU HEARD ON THIS EPISODE: Training for Utopia "Two Hands" Zao "Angel Without Wings" Thousand Foot Krutch "Puppet" Demon Hunter "Screans of the Undead" Focused "Forward" Training for Utopia "A Good Feeling" Living Sacrifice "Threatened" Vengeance Rising "Human Sacrifice" Living Sacrifice "No Longer" Demon Hunter "The Last One Alive"   MORE FROM TOOTH & NAIL: * Labeled: Music From The Podcast: smarturl.it/labeledplaylist * DISCOVER IT: New Tracks from T&N Records: smarturl.it/TNNDiscover * This Is Solid State: New Tracks from Solid State Records: https://spoti.fi/2CUCsaH    * Tooth & Nail Store (LABELED Patreon members get 20% off everything): tnn.lnk.to/store

Plankeye: Chasing the Dream
Chapter 9 Plankeye began as a raw, high energy power pop band in the 90's, but made their way into the polished Christian scene after touring with larger CCM acts. They became a commercial success, but appearances are not always what they seem. Guitarist Eric Balmer and others shed light on the complications and forces at play to make their breakout happen. Dominate '98
Chapter 8 By the time the 90's were coming to a close, Tooth & Nail Records had accomplished some amazing things. They had sold millions of records and helped to create a movement and and establish a thriving music scene. In 1998 it seemed like Like the label was really on top and had it all figured out, but changes were brewing in the larger climate and music scene. The punk sound was at its pinnacle, but new sounds were emerging as well and the music industry and major labels were beginning to catch up with what the indies were doing and looking to get in on the action. This episode give us a chance to see from the view of a rival and competitor. Brad Most of Goatee Records explains what that time period felt like and Brandon reflects on his decisions making and thinking in that period.   https://labeledpodcast.com/ Support Labeled on Patreon   Join Labeled on Facebook   MORE FROM TOOTH & NAIL: * Labeled: Music From The Podcast: smarturl.it/labeledplaylist * DISCOVER IT: New Tracks from T&N Records: smarturl.it/TNNDiscover * This Is Solid State: New Tracks from Solid State Records: https://spoti.fi/2CUCsaH    * Tooth & Nail Store (LABELED Patreon members get 20% off everything): tnn.lnk.to/store

From Bremerton to the Wide World
Chapter 6 MXPX has a special place in the history of Tooth and Nail Records. They were the first band to break well beyond the Christian punk hardcore scene and into the mainstream. In 1992, they were 10th graders in Bremerton, trying to play at house parties. By 1996, they were on MTV, KROQ, and part of the global pop punk culture. This was an incredibly rapid rise, full of new elements to navigate, not only for the band, but for Tooth and Nail, who now found themselves in a different world and at a totally new level, setting a new precedent for what was possible for an independent label.   https://labeledpodcast.com/ Support Labeled on Patreon   Join Labeled on Facebook   SONGS YOU HEARD ON THIS EPISODE: MxPx "Secret Weapon" MxPx "Walking Bye" MxPx "Christalena (Demo Version)" MxPx "Want Ad" MxPx "Punk Rawk Show" MxPx "Chick Magnet" MxPx "Responsibility"   MORE FROM TOOTH & NAIL: * Labeled: Music From The Podcast: smarturl.it/labeledplaylist * DISCOVER IT: New Tracks from T&N Records: smarturl.it/TNNDiscover * This Is Solid State: New Tracks from Solid State Records: https://spoti.fi/2CUCsaH    * Tooth & Nail Store (LABELED Patreon members get 20% off everything): tnn.lnk.to/store

The End of Cornerstone
Chapter 5 Cornerstone Festival grew to a massive level by the mid 2000’s with Tooth and Nail day being one of its main features. The cultures of Tooth and Nail and Cornerstone were a perfect fit. The environment that they created was both the incubator and launching pad for countless careers and also a wonderful place of development for its attendees, staff, and volunteers. The festival did in fact come to an end, but it by no means did it fail.   https://labeledpodcast.com/ Support Labeled on Patreon   Join Labeled on Facebook   SONGS YOU HEARD ON THIS EPISODE: Dogwood "Never Die" Danielson "Did I Step on Your Trumpet" Charlie Peacock "This is the Way of Love" FM Static "Next Big Thing" Hangnail "Aspire" Mae "Last Call" Mae "Light Years" Two Thirty Eight "Modern Day Prayer" Value Pac "Nothing" Norma Jean "Leaderless and Self Enlisted" Copeland "Pin Your Wings"   MORE FROM TOOTH & NAIL: * Labeled: Music From The Podcast: smarturl.it/labeledplaylist * DISCOVER IT: New Tracks from T&N Records: smarturl.it/TNNDiscover * This Is Solid State: New Tracks from Solid State Records: https://spoti.fi/2CUCsaH    * Tooth & Nail Store (LABELED Patreon members get 20% off everything): tnn.lnk.to/store

The Rise of Cornerstone
Chapter 4 As it turns out, Cornerstone Festival had a lot more than a good lineup of bands; it has its own rich history and undergirding philosophy born out of The Jesus People USA and John Herrin, the festival’s director. Much of this philosophy and the festival’s audience was a direct inspiration to Tooth and Nail Records. Brandon Ebel traveled there in 1990 with a backpack and left with the clear notion that there needed to be more of what was going on at Cornerstone.   https://labeledpodcast.com/ Support Labeled on Patreon Join Labeled on Facebook    SONGS YOU HEARD ON THIS EPISODE: Resurrection Band:   "Irish Garden" Zao "Free The Three" Ghoti Hook "My Bike" As Cities Burn "The Hoard" The Drowned God "Catholic" Jeremy Camp "Take My Life" mewithoutYou "In a Sweater Poorly Knit" Further Seems Forever "The Sound" Morella’s Forest "Gentle Go The Hours" Family Force Five "Dance Or Die" Showbread "Mouth Like A Magazine"   MORE FROM THIS EPISODE:* The Drowned God - “Catholic” Music Video: http://bit.ly/2E11Nk2* Follow The Drowned God on Spotify: spoti.fi/2FfkEsc   MORE FROM TOOTH & NAIL:* Labeled: Music From The Podcast: smarturl.it/labeledplaylist* DISCOVER IT: New Tracks from T&N Records: smarturl.it/TNNDiscover* This Is Solid State: New Tracks from Solid State Records: https://spoti.fi/2CUCsaH   * Tooth & Nail Store (LABELED Patreon members get 20% off everything): tnn.lnk.to/store

The Stigma
Chapter 3: By the mid 90’s, Tooth and Nail Records had moved from Southern California to Seattle, where they were confronted with a scene that was not exactly welcoming to Christian rock, but the influence of that scene would play a role in Brandon’s strategy to embrace and seek artists that could be credible in the mainstream world and place them alongside others that could have mass appeal in the Christian market. This episode explores the difficulty navigating being an artist while having to wrestle with Christianity, credibility, commerce, and the conflicting expectations of fans, parents, record labels, and the non-Christian bands that you think of as peers.   Links & Sponsors: https://labeledpodcast.com/ Support Labeled on Patreon Join Labeled on Facebook Follow Tooth and Nail on Spotify Tooth and Nail Playlist: http://smarturl.it/TNNDISCOVER Stream or Download Azusa's "Heavy Yoke" at solidstate.lnk.to/azusa Songs You Heard in this Episode: Stavesacre "Against the Silence" Pedro the Lion "Almost There" Roadside Monument "Sperm Ridden Burden" The Blamed "Walkabout" Focused "Hurts to Ask" Azusa "Interstellar Island" Focused "Dead Sky" Luxury "Bitter Once Again" The Blamed "Feeding the Ignorant" Frodus "Revolution" Demon Hunter "Through the Black"

Permission Not Required
Chapter 1: By the late 80s, a massive void had formed between secular and Christian culture, and the secular side seemed to have all the best music. But, something new was beginning to emerge from Southern California and the Pacific Northwest: a movement of Christian kids and leaders who not only embraced punk and DIY ethics, but saw it as consistent with their faith. They began to form a scene and a community of inspiring and credible music – but with no internet, there was little-to-no support or infrastructure. Clearly, there was not only proven demand from would-be consumers, but a clear vision from the artists involved. So they built what they needed, gained support from fans, and sparked a culture-shifting creative explosion leading to to the founding of Tooth & Nail Records and much more.   Links & Sponsors: https://labeledpodcast.com/ Support Labeled on Patreon Join Labeled on Facebook Follow Tooth and Nail on Spotify Tooth and Nail Playlist: http://smarturl.it/TNNDISCOVER
