#38 - Shaun Peet - A hockey journey to Nascar, Talladega Nights and being a leadership champion

It was a ton of fun on the Top Cheddar podcast as Shaun Peet joined Lolly and Mooner to chat about his hockey journey from the BCHL to the Calder Cup and how that journey led to his new career in Nascar Racing!

Shaun Peet played in the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) with his hometown Nanaimo Clippers and the Penticton Panthers.  From there, he secured a scholarship to Dartmouth College and played four years.  After he graduated from Dartmouth, Peet played 7 years of professional hockey.  He played in the Western Professional Hockey League, East Coast Hockey League, Central Hockey League, Southern Professional Hockey League and the American Hockey League.  That included a run to the Calder Cup (AHL Championship) with the Wilkes-Barre Penguins in 2000-01.

While on a hockey suspension, a chance meeting led to an opportunity to tour the inner workings of Nascar. Well, one thing led to another and soon a new career path was on tap for Shaun. That work also led to being in the movie Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby

In addition to coaching in NASCAR, Peet is also an author, motivational speaker, and business consultant with DECK Leadership, who inspires the modern workplace through pit crew strategies.

#27 - Mooner goes Top Cheddar! The new radio voice of the Edmonton Oilers

Mooner goes Top Cheddar! This episode, we dive into the behind the scenes of how Cam Moon, our beloved co-pilot of the Top Cheddar show, became the new radio voice of the Edmonton Oilers.

He paid his dues for over 20 years in the WHL as the voice of the Red Deer Rebels and finally got his well deserved big shot. And that shot came in a hurry.

Along with what the first couple weeks have been like, Cam shares the story of being traded multiple times his one year in Junior in a way that some call it the Cam Moon rule. A great story you’ll want to hear.

Top Cheddar Episode #11 - Featuring Jesse Wallin. 1st Rounder, GM, Coach and Head Amateur Scout with the Detroit Red Wings

Top Cheddar Episode #11 - Featuring Jesse Wallin. 1st Rounder, GM, Coach and Head Amateur Scout with the Detroit Red Wings

Jesse is currently the Head Amateur Scout for the Detroit Red Wings having just moved over from the St. Louis Blues (with a Stanley Cup for good measure!).

He was a Red Wing 1st round selection from the Rebels and he really enjoyed his time in the WHL, AHL and NHL with the Red Wings.

After his playing career, he rejoined the Red Deer Rebels as an Assistant Coach before making his way into both the Head Coach and GM positions.

He then took his skills in recognizing and developing young hockey talent into the world of pro scouting with the St. Louis Blues and now for the Detroit Red Wings.

We had a great chat including learning about the fact that Jesse drew much of his inspiration to play in the WHL from a book that Rob was fortunate to be a part of, the Making of Champions by Robert Olver. What a small world!

Thanks for listening (and sharing too if you can!).

Darcy Tucker: 3X Memorial Cup Champion and Toronto Maple Leaf's fan favourite. The epitome of an agitator in the NHL.

Darcy Tucker: 3X Memorial Cup Champion and Toronto Maple Leaf's fan favourite. The epitome of an agitator in the NHL.

Rob and Cam had a great chat with Darcy Tucker. He was considered one of the greatest agitators in the NHL. The Leaf’s fan favourite played over 1,000 games and put up some serious points and penalty minutes while winning three Memorial Cups and World Junior gold along the way.

Darcy Tucker, a native of Endiang, Alberta, played 947 regular season and 68 playoff games in the National Hockey League for the Montreal Canadiens, Tampa Bay Lightning, Toronto Maple Leafs and the Colorado Avalanche. Tucker scored 215 goals and had 261 assists for 476 points in the NHL, along with 1,410 penalty minutes. Tucker was the epitome of an agitator in the NHL, a player players hated to play against but wished to have play on their team.

Tucker played on the legendary Kamloops Blazers teams of the 1990s and was captain of the team in the 1994-95 season. Darcy Tucker is one of four players in the 90 year history of Major Junior Ice Hockey to have won three Memorial Cups, the championship of Major Junior Ice Hockey in Canada. Those Memorial Cups were won in 1992 (in Seattle, Washington), 1994 (in Laval, P.Q.) and 1995 (in Kamloops, B.C.).

In 1995 Tucker also won a World Junior Championship Gold Medal while representing Canada, in the World Junior Championships in Calgary.

Darcy Tucker was drafted in the 6th Round of the 1993 NHL Entry Draft by the Montreal Canadiens, 151st Overall. Always told he was too small and not fast enough, Tucker overcame these perceived obstacles and became a consummate professional ice hockey player who could play it any way you wanted - physical, skilled, defensive, offensive. In his first professional season in the American Hockey League he won the Dudley "Red" Garrett Memorial Trophy and scored 93 points in 74 games. The following season he stuck with the Montreal Canadiens where he played for two seasons and then was traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning in 1998. In 2000 he was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs for whom he played for nine seasons. In 2008 Tucker was signed as an unrestricted free agent by the Colorado Avalanche of the National Hockey League. Tucker had six twenty goal seasons in the National Hockey League including a career-high 28 goals in the 2005-2006 season playing in 74 games.

Big thanks to Darcy for joining us on the Top Cheddar podcast.

WHL record holder Glen Goodall shares some amazing stories of his 20+ year pro hockey career.

WHL record holder Glen Goodall shares some amazing stories of his 20+ year pro hockey career.

Always fun to chat with a record holder on the Top Cheddar podcast. We were fortunate to have Glen Goodall as our most recent guest.

Head to Seattle and you’ll see his name hanging in the rafters and for good reason. He played six full seasons in Seattle, starting at the young age of 14 and he holds the WHL record for most games played at 399. He’s also the 2nd overall in all-time points with 573 points.

Glen, a Detroit Red Wings draft pick, enjoyed a professional hockey career that extended past twenty years. He played a significant amount of his pro career in the German hockey leagues and we had a great chat about his historical WHL career, pro career, thoughts on the new Seattle Krakens and chatted about his real estate business.

Glen lives in beautiful Sylvan Lake, Alberta and has his own Re/Max real estate team. To learn more about Glen, head to http://www.glengoodall.com/

Top Cheddar with Kevin 'Killer' Kaminski - the fighter, scorer, coach and entrepreneur

Top Cheddar with Kevin 'Killer' Kaminski - the fighter, scorer, coach and entrepreneur

The pride of Churchbridge, Saskatchewan! They named the rink after this guy for very good reason. Kevin ‘Killer’ Kaminski brought a level of fierce passion to the game of hockey and continues to this day off the ice as a coach and his Killer side business.

A fan favourite of the Saskatoon Blades, Kevin went on to a career with the Minnesota North Stars, Quebec Nordiques and the Washington Capitals. During his four seasons with the Capitals, his hard-nosed style of play would make him a fan favourite, as he would not hesitate to fight players much bigger than he was. He would play three more seasons in the minors for the Portland Pirates of the American Hockey League (winning the Calder Cup) before retiring in 1999.

Since playing, he has spent the last twenty years behind the bench and is currently the GM/Head Coach of the La Ronge Ice Wolves of the SJHL. His first season as head coach there saw him win Coach of the Year honours.

Kevin has built himself a fun little side business including events, charity events, hockey schools and all kinds of Killer merchandise. Check it out at http://killer-hockey.com/

Kevin also talked about a new initiative he is doing with Love My Mind. Be sure to check that out and support where you can. https://lovemymind.ca/
