In overseas countries, March 14th, known as White Day, is mostly unfamiliar, but in Japan, it's an exciting day when boys return the favor to girls for the chocolates received on Valentine's Day. On Valentine's Day, giving chocolates is the mainstream, but the returns on White Day vary and include cookies, chocolates, and more. These return gifts of sweets are said to conceal various feelings towards the girls. We've investigated the meanings behind the White Day return sweets, which are not very well known even among Japanese people.

In this episode, we start by discussing the strength of Kyushu's baseball team, the SoftBank Hawks, and move on to talk about the charm of Kyushu as a region with a strong baseball team and numerous attractions. On the other hand, when we turn our attention to Nagoya, where we live, we find that not only is our baseball team weaker, but there are also fewer notable tourist spots and attractions, leading us to feel envious of Kyushu. So, what about Aichi Prefecture? Upon reflection, we discovered that Aichi actually has a unique characteristic related to Toyota Motor Corporation. While we envy the allure of Kyushu, we also discuss the mysteries of Aichi Prefecture.

In Nagoya, there are foods unique to the area, such as "Hitsumabushi" and "Miso Nikomi Udon." Many of us grew up eating these foods, believing that they were common and available everywhere in Japan. However, not only with food but also with the environment we grew up in, schools, and so on, what we took for granted as children turned out to be something special and unique to that place. In this episode, we talked about various things we had believed to be "ordinary," which actually weren't "ordinary" at all.

今週末（こんしゅうまつ）はコンサートのため、滋賀県(しがけん)に旅行(りょこう)に行(い)ってきました。滋賀県(しがけん)はいつも新幹線(しんかんせん)で通(とお)り過(す)ぎるだけの場所(ばしょ)で、あまりしっかり観光(かんこう)したことがありませんでした。まずは琵琶湖(びわこ)の大(おお)きさに感動(かんどう)し、また京都(きょうと)にも近(ちか)いことから、有名(ゆうめい)なお寺(てら)や神社(じんじゃ)も多(おお)い伝統的(でんとうてき)なところもあり、滋賀県(しがけん)の新(あたら)たな魅力(みりょく)をいろいろと発見(はっけん)しました。京都(きょうと)大阪(おおさか)へのアクセスの良(よ)さ、琵琶湖(びわこ)の美(うつく)しさ、大都市(だいとし)ほど混雑(こんざつ)していなくて閑静(かんせい)な街並(まちな)み、などなど、知（し）らなかった滋賀(しが)の良(よ)さがたくさんあります！京都（きょうと）だけではなく隣（となり）の滋賀県（しがけん）もおすすめです！

This weekend, we traveled to Shiga Prefecture for a concert. Shiga has always been a place I've passed through on the Shinkansen, without ever really taking the time to explore it thoroughly. First off, we were amazed by the size of Lake Biwa. Being close to Kyoto, Shiga is home to many famous temples and shrines, showcasing its traditional charm. We discovered various new attractions of Shiga Prefecture, including the easy access to Kyoto and Osaka, the beauty of Lake Biwa, and its tranquil streets, which are not as crowded as those in bigger cities. There are so many great aspects of Shiga that we weren't aware of! Not just Kyoto, but its neighbor Shiga Prefecture comes highly recommended too!

The Center Exam, a crucial examination for university admission, has been conducted. In Japan, to enter a national university, students must take this Center Exam as well as a second-stage examination. It marks the start of a challenging season for examinees. In this episode, we explored the popular university departments chosen by current high school students. When I went to sign a new car contract, I found out that currently, the earliest delivery time for cars is 6 months, and in some cases, it can take several years. It's shocking, but sometimes it can even take as long as 4 years. Surprising, isn't it? I looked into the major cause of this delay in car delivery, which is the shortage of semiconductors. Why have semiconductors become so scarce? What responses are the Japanese government and Japanese companies taking? It's a bit of a complex topic, but we tried to discuss the semiconductor shortage in terms that high school students and the general public like us can understand.

Tora has finally passed the interview and started working part-time. He's a bit relieved to be working in the same restaurant as his friends, but as a first-timer in part-time work, Tora has many questions. What is the hardest part of a part-time job? Is it relaxing to have a job with a lot of free time? On the contrary, what was enjoyable? And so on. Drawing on my own experience of working in Japan and Australia, I answered these questions. Instead, platforms like YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram dominate their media consumption. Tora-kun is a typical example of this trend. Surprisingly, he only recently discovered the world of Hollywood cinema, and he's completely captivated. His first pick? 'Mission Impossible.' He was thrilled by Tom Cruise's action-packed scenes, the gripping storyline, and the stunning CG effects. It was astonishing to learn that Tora-kun hadn't seen classic Hollywood films like 'Titanic' or 'The Matrix' – his experience with movies had been limited to anime. This episode explores this fascinating generational gap, delving into the charm of Hollywood and the appeal of live-action films beyond the realm of anime.

今回(こんかい)はYouTubeで見(み)たカリフォルニアにあるスラブシティという場所(ばしょ)の話(はなし)をしました。スラブシティには法律(ほうりつ)がなく、人々(ひとびと)が自由(じゆう)に暮(く)らしています。「法律(ほうりつ)がない」というととても怖(こわ)い場所(ばしょ)のように思(おも)えますが、詳(くわ)しく見(み)てみると、お金(かね)や物(もの)に縛(しば)られず、人々(ひとびと)がお互(たが)いリスペクトし合(あ)って生活(せいかつ)しているようです。新(あたら)しいiPhoneを買(か)ったばかりの私(わたし)ですが、物(もの)を持(も)つこと、お金(かね)を持(も)つことについてもう一度(いちど)考(かんが)え直(なお)すいい機会(きかい)になりました。とても面白(おもしろ)い街(まち)だと思(おも)うので、みなさんも今回(こんかい)のエピソードを聞(き)いて、現代(げんだい)の消費(しょうひ)社会(しゃかい)を見直(みなお)してみてもいいかもしれませんね。

In this episode, I talked about a place called Slab City in California, which I saw on YouTube. Slab City is a lawless area where people live freely. The phrase 'without law' might make it seem like a scary place, but on closer inspection, it appears people live there respecting each other, unbound by money or possessions. As someone who just bought a new iPhone, this was a good opportunity for me to rethink what it means to own things and to have money. I think it's a very interesting town, so listening to this episode might also be a good chance for everyone to reconsider our modern consumer society.

ホストファミリーをしている友達（ともだち）の家（いえ）に遊（あそ）びに行（い）ってきました。友達の家に来（き）ている、その留学生（りゅうがくせい）はなんとメルボルン出身（しゅっしん）！！私（わたし）もとらもメルボルン在住（ざいじゅう）経験（けいけん）があるので、メルボルンの話（はなし）で盛（も）り上（あ）がりました。なんて偶然（ぐうぜん）！実（じつ）は世界（せかい）って狭（せま）いですね！ 友達の住（す）んでいる町（まち）には、私たちは行（い）ったことがなく、どんな場所（ばしょ）なのかも知（し）らなかったのですが、のんびりして素敵（すてき）なところでした。なにより、私たちの大好物（だいこうぶつ）、うなぎが美味（おい）しくて安（やす）いことで有名（ゆうめい）です。友達が炭（すみ）で焼（や）いてくれたうなぎが美味しくて感動（かんどう）した話、もちろんメルボルンの話、それから海産物（かいさんぶつ）の別名（べつめい）についてなども話しました。

Tora and I visited my friend who is hosting an exchange student. Surprisingly, the student is from Melbourne! What a coincidence! It really shows how small the world can be. Since both Tora and I have lived in Melbourne, we had a great time reminiscing about both Melbourne and Japan. Interestingly, this was our first visit to my friend's town, despite it being in the same prefecture as ours. The town was a quiet and lovely place. Most notably, it's famous for our favorite seafood, eel! My friend purchased some at a seafood market and grilled them over charcoal for us. It was the best eel we've ever had! We talked about our fantastic experience with the fresh eel and our memories of Melbourne, and we also discussed the nicknames of various seafoods.

Do you all like kanji? Did you know that the names of countries and cities around the world can also be written in kanji? Recently, I discussed the difficulty of writing the names of countries in kanji with students studying at a university in Japan. For instance, Italy is written as '伊' (I), America as '米' (Bei), Australia as '豪' (Gou), and Spain as '西' (Sei). Why is that? It seems some of these are derived from Chinese pronunciations. We also talked about foreign languages and katakana in relation to Japanese sounds. Japanese language has three types of characters: hiragana, katakana, and kanji, which makes it quite challenging. Truly, great job to everyone studying Japanese!"

聖地（せいち）巡礼（じゅんれい）」という単語（たんご）を知（し）っていますか？英語（えいご）だとHolly Pilgrimageですが、日本人（にほんじん）が使（つか）う意味（いみ）は、アニメに出（で）てきた場所（ばしょ）や映画（えいが）やMVの撮（と）られた場所、好（す）きなバンドやアイドル、推し（おし）の生誕（せいたん）の地（ち）や活動（かつどう）してきた場所などを訪（おとず）れることを「聖地巡礼」といいます。今回（こんかい）、私（わたし）が好きなロックバンドの故郷（こきょう）である天草（あまくさ）に旅行（りょこう）してきました。天草といえば、今やそのバンドの聖地として有名（ゆうめい）ですが、実（じつ）はキリスト教（きりすときょう）が禁止（きんし）されていた時代（じだい）に、キリスト教徒（きりすときょうと）が隠（かく）れていた場所として歴史的（れきしてき）に有名で、世界遺産（せかいいさん）にもなっています。今回は聖地と世界遺産という２つの目線（めせん）から見（み）た天草について話（はな）しています。

Have you ever come across the Japanese term '聖地巡礼 (seichi junrei),' which translates to 'Holy Pilgrimage' in English? In Japan, this phrase has a unique nuance. It refers to visiting locations featured in beloved anime, such as the iconic Shibuya crossing and Takayama town in Gifu, well-known from the globally acclaimed anime movie 'Your Name.' It's not limited to anime sites; it also encompasses visiting the birthplaces or significant locations related to your favorite rock stars, idols, or biases. In this episode, I discuss my visit to Amakusa Island, the birthplace of my favorite band. While Amakusa is now renowned as a sacred site for fans of this band, it also holds historical significance as a refuge for Christians during the period when Christianity was banned in Japan. Amakusa is now recognized as a World Cultural Heritage site. We explore Amakusa from the dual perspectives of a 'holy pilgrimage' and its status as a world heritage site.

Do you lock your door even when you're at home?　We got interesting research results. In Japan, whether or not people lock their doors seems to vary considerably depending on the region and age. In this episode, we discussed the security measures associated with this. Moreover, while in Japan, we have intercoms and peepholes, many countries abroad might not have intercoms, and some don't even have peepholes. We also talked about such entrance door situations around the world. What kind of doors are common in your country?

Recently, Tora went for a part-time job interview and got turned down, not for his skills or personality, but because his school prohibits students from taking on part-time work. Surprisingly, this rule, often overlooked, can be baffling, especially for those outside Japan. Why do Japanese schools even have the authority to ban students from part-time jobs? There's a stark contrast between Western schools, where part-time jobs can be seen as evidence of a student's responsibility and initiative, and Japanese institutions that believe students should solely focus on their studies. While out for a morning run, I was struck by a car! Thankfully, I escaped with just a few scratches on my arms and some rib pain. However, my minor injuries led me to mishandle the situation post-accident. So, what were the consequences of my improper actions? It’s been approximately one month since we announced the Origami Crane Project, and we have gathered over 11,000 cranes. Tora, who was on a short-term study abroad program in Melbourne, Australia, has finally returned! I also spent roughly four weeks in Indonesia and returned to Japan on the same day. We're both finding it a little hard to adjust to being back in Japan after so long. Hello everyone! In this episode, we'd like to talk about our ongoing "Origami Crane Project." Today, coincidentally, marks the anniversary of the atomic bombing in Hiroshima. Why not join us in reflecting on war and nuclear weapons? This fall, Torakun will be going on a school trip to Nagasaki, another city that suffered from atomic bombing, and he plans to take 10,000 folded origami cranes with him as a wish for peace. ５月（がつ）の末（まつ）に一人（ひとり）で東京（とうきょう）に行（い）ってきました。今回（こんかい）のエピソードではその時（とき）感（かん）じた、東京（とうきょう）の観光客（かんこうきゃく）の多（おお）さにびっくりした話（はなし）をしています。どこに行（い）っても英語（えいご）、韓国語（かんこくご）、中国語（ちゅうごくご）しか聞（き）こえてこない東京（とうきょう）。一方（いっぽう）で、観光名所（かんこうめいしょ）でも、あまり外国人（がいこくじん）でにぎわっていない名古屋（なごや）。その比較（ひかく）から、また名古屋（なごや）の食べ物（たべもの）の話（はなし）、さらには私（わたし）たち家族（かぞく）のちょっと変（へん）な食文化（しょくぶんか）について話（はな）しました。

I took a solo trip to Tokyo at the end of May. In this episode, I talk about my surprise at Tokyo's sheer number of tourists. No matter where I went, I could only hear English, Korean, and Chinese being spoken. On the other hand, even at its tourist spots, Nagoya wasn't crowded with foreigners. From that comparison, we return to the topic of Nagoya's food and also discuss my family's unique food culture.
