Tracing Owls

Tracing Owls

By Darwin's Deviations

An eccentrically nuanced exploration into Fortean philosophy, focusing on the roles of Mother Nature, the Trickster and the experiencer in shaping phenomena, with tremendous doses of absurdity, mischief, but also humility! Cryptids, UFOs, Paranormal phenomena, High strangeness and Fortean anomalies, do they all possibly originate from the same source? Are they actually a mirror to our own subconsciousness, and what may they teach us about ourselves? We seek to catalogue the overlooked, spotlight the disregarded, and remind that the cosmic expanse is much greater than our understanding of it!

Hungry Hungry Hippos

Hungry Hungry Hippos

Might river monster legends be projected ancestral memories of freakin' hippos, passed onto us from our earliest roots in Africa?

Discussed are the Kelpie, Dobhar-chu, Ahuizotl, and their possible achetypal ties to the #1 deadliest animal in Africa!

Oogie Boogie Bookmarks

Oogie Boogie Bookmarks

Do cryptids and ghosts serve as personified reminders of obscure historical events? And are we using them as middle men who allow us to gracefully disassociate ourselves from the errors of our past?

Discussed is the idea that cryptids and ghosts may serve as bookmarks which help us rediscover our own history, with special emphasis on the Hull Werewolf and the Sliderock Bolter.

The Superspectrum of Gaia - with Barbara Fisher

The Superspectrum of Gaia - with Barbara Fisher

Barbara opens a never-ending can of worms as we tackle animism, Gaia, light phenomena, consciousness and death!

As the host of 6 Degrees of John Keel, Barbara talks with various experiencers and researchers of high strangeness. She is also a bookworm who memorizes every book she reads!

Thanks to this vast knowledge, and her own personal experiences, Barbara has been developing a theory proposing that the origin of The Other lies within its purest form: anomalous lights.

She puts her Keelian cap on to talk about ultraterrestrials and light beings, while I put my Gaianist cap on to discuss whether our consciousness is connected to the Earth, and the role of microbes in forming our psyches!

======================

Huge THANK YOU!!! to Barbara Fisher for putting in the most minimal effort to censor herself, resulting in a hilariously entertaining 2-hour experience! ❤️

Fearful Transitions - with Trina Close

A peek into an open and honest conversation between 2 friends about fear, change and personal growth!

Trina co-hosts the podcast Spooks, Creeps and Assorted Devilry, a role she found very difficult adapting to but which ultimately transformed her into a more positive and sincere individual.

Today we sat down not as podcast hosts, but as two regular, honest and vulnerable people, discussing the role of fear in shaping our decisions and beliefs, the masks we wear in order to avoid confrontations, the magickal power of intent, Tarot reading for personal guidance, as well as the role of kindness and hospitality in diffusing antagonism from other people, but also entities as well!

P.S.: Yes, there is no intro. This is not an episode, rather it is personal conversation between people. By some strange circumstances it made its way on the feed so y'all may listen in!

Headless Animal Ghosts - with Cole Herrold

Headless Animal Ghosts - with Cole Herrold

Cole and I lose our heads sharing creepy stories of ghost animals missing their heads! (or even other body parts)

TRIGGER WARNING: Ghost animals are most often dead animals. If they're missing their heads, they obviously died a gruesome death! Though no animals were harmed during the making of this episode, we will be dancing around suggestions of animal cruelty or mutilation.

Discussed are spooky tales of a ghost cow with a detached floating head, a frozen ghost chicken in London, haunted slaughterhouses, headless phantom dogs, a man who turned into a flaming turkey, mountain lion taxidermies coming to life, and even a cursed skeleton of a freakin' donkey!

As this episode was already dead on arrival, we also consistently deviate into movie tangents, random biology lectures, and cringy jokes which will make the listener's head fall off!

West Virginian Pilgrimage - with Mothboy Mike

West Virginian Pilgrimage - with Mothboy Mike

Mothboy Mike shares his spiritual pilgrimage through West Virginia, paying homage to a cast of colorful Fortean icons!

Co-hosting the Mothboys Podcast, and authoring a new children's book about the Vegetable Man, Mikey has been nurturing a recent interest in the writings and colorful life of Gray Barker.

Driven by an otherworldly compulsion, Mike has been making multiple pilgrimages to the Gray Barker archives in Clarksburg, WV, familiarizing himself with Gray's often overlooked case materials and personal correspondences... but the journey did not end there!

Along the way he has been making stops to the grave site of Jennings Frederick, paying his respects to the Vegetable Man witness.

The recent sad passing of Robert Cockrell, the Grafton Monster witness, compelled Mikey to assume the role of the monster's avatar, serving as a beacon of inspiration and curiosity to all who remember this wonderful story.

Appalachian Archetypes - with Jason from The Esoteric Book Club

Appalachian Archetypes - with Jason from The Esoteric Book Club

Jason shares his vast knowledge of West Virginian history, helping me divinate their cryptids via tarot!

As a teacher, outdoorsman, West Virginian and host of The Esoteric Book Club, Jason is very knowledgeable on the history of his home state, and all the cultural eccentricities which make it a hotspot for high strangeness!

Today we spend almost 2 hours analyzing the symbology of the most popular West Virginian cryptids, breaking down their societal roles and cultural impact through the archetypes of the Major Arcana, even though neither of us are experts in tarot and we probably messed up every interpretation!

But no worries, as we often lose our train of thought and delve into discussion about ultraterrestrials, dinosaur poop, bootleg moonshine, and just why the Appalachians are rich in cultural identity and otherworldly phenomena!

The Woods Have Eyes - with TheCrescentHare

The Woods Have Eyes - with TheCrescentHare

Christina shares her childhood initiation into high strangeness, leading her down a path of UFO research and a Man in Black encounter!

Witnessing an image of the Flatwoods Monster in a tabloid at an early age initiated Christina into a world of the weird, where otherness is the norm and rules are non-existent. A later teenage psychedelic experience in the forest left a permanent impression that there is much more to nature, and reality itself, than what we can see with our naked eyes.

We discuss the effects of childhood trauma in predisposing us to the world of high strangeness, the role media and books play in nurturing and empowering our sense of otherness, the influence of psychedelics in shattering our sense of reality, and the abandonment of our childhood beliefs which paves the way to a more holistic understanding of The Other.

Mamlambo: Sins, Serpents, Sacrifice - with Theshira from Legendary Africa

Mamlambo: Sins, Serpents, Sacrifice - with Theshira from Legendary Africa

Theshira helps us navigate the world of South African river deities, serpentine cryptids and black magick!

As the host of Legendary Africa Podcast, and resident South African, Theshira researches folklore and legends from all across the African continent, stories which throughout the centuries have most often been lost to history or irreparably warped by colonial influence.

Today we present our collaborative research into the Mamlambo, a figure which has assumed many forms throughout the years: serpent goddess, witch's familiar, brain-sucking river monster, even wealthy and seductive white foreigners!

But with the advent of Western capitalism in South Africa, we are also bearing witness to a bizarre cultural transformation, where figures of traditional belief are molded and repurposed into embodiments of modern globalization and capitalistic greed!

Fay Goo - with Morgan Daimler

Fay Goo - with Morgan Daimler

Author and folklorist Morgan Daimler returns to discuss the role of A.I. in reshaping folklore, leading to a potential future where cultural nuance is lost in favor of a bland tasteless gray goo!

With the rise in popularity of A.I.-driven writing tools, nowadays we are witnessing never-before-seen transformations of cultural tropes into incoherent, conflicting and homogeneous gobbledygook. But is this truly a new phenomenon, or have we been diluting and mixing up folklore for centuries?

Morgan and I also discuss the turmoils of researching the history of fairy belief, the influence of Christians and Victorians in reshaping fairy lore, and how modern nontraditional tropes make their way into not just our pop culture, but also bleed into the real world through anecdotal encounters with the Good Folk!

It Must Be An Ompax! - with Todd Purse

Todd joins as we attempt to twist and over-exaggerate the very true falsehood of a completely fabricated forgery fish which was totally considered a genuinely authentic species…for over 5 decades!

What would you do if you were served an atrocious fish of unknown origin? You’d eat it! And you’d pay for it as well!

But you certainly would not try to document it in the annals of biological literature as a newly discovered species, because a century down the line a pair of weirdos may dig up your secret little blunder and make a show of it, use it to have a few laughs, promote mystical thought, but worst of all: expose that the scientific method is always susceptible to human error!

Lord Kinbote: The Subterranean Saga of Roky Crikenson

An encounter they don't want you to know! A visitor from a faraway place! A man hellbent on revealing the truth so much he literally travels down to the molten core of the Earth!

All main sources of this story have been erased from history, though our belief still remains. One day we may locate them. We will never stop searching, as long as we know that the truth is out there!

Documenting Depravity - with Jon & Jo from Spread the Dread

Documenting Depravity - with Jon & Jo from Spread the Dread

A pair of Dreadheads help me dissect the legend of snuff films and our obsession with death on camera!

TRIGGER WARNING: Apart from obviously discussing filmed murders and suicides, we will also be exposing our morbid curiosity over gore videos and violent underground cinema. Jon and Jo are also sick fucks with a dark sense of humor (as am I), so don't go whining if you are offended by our jokes today!

Yes, as you may have noticed, today we are putting our edgelord fedoras on to discuss the origins of the snuff film urban legend, exploitation movies like Snuff or Cannibal Holocaust which contributed to the legend unfolding, the role of gore sites in preserving lost media, and even the Vietnam war's role in introducing an American audience to televised depictions of blood and guts, in living color!

======================

Huge THANK YOU!!! to Jon and Jo for bravely emerging from the shadows, allowing an oblivious audience to be exposed to whatever atrocious mental STD they were carrying! ❤️

Dungeons & Devils - with Shibble from Uncle Monster

Dungeons & Devils - with Shibble from Uncle Monster

Shibble nerds over Dungeons & Dragons as we discuss the franchise's most prosperous days: the Satanic Panic!

But beware, as we are dissecting D&D through the lens of 80s mass hysteria we will also be talking about triggering topics such as child abuse, teenage suicide and crazed conservative right-wingers!

Shibble breaks down the history of Satanic Panic through the stories which inspired books like Remembering Satan, The Dungeon Master and even Michelle Remembers, while I attempt to crap all over regressive hypnosis yet again, by tying the alien abduction craze back to satanic ritual abuse hysteria.

Shibble also shakes his head in disappointment as I try to make the case that D&D truly is magic, and may be used for divination! Hey, maybe we trigger some conspiracy nuts along the way!

===============

Huge THANK YOU!!! to Shibble from Uncle Monster's Spooky Time Fright Hour for purging all of his D&D and Satanic Panic obsessions upon us, allowing me to profit off his knowledge without doing a sliver of research myself! 🤣

We Belong Weird - with Puxley and Fred Andersson

We Belong Weird - with Puxley and Fred Andersson

Puxley and Fred join a weird-ass roundtable on advocating high strangeness and re-weirdening the weird!

After not much convincing by myself and Fred, we dragged Puxley out of his shell to have an open-ended discussion about the mainstream's tendency to shed away the high strangeness, and our own efforts to counter this by spreading awareness of the weird!

But as our tricksterish minds cannot stay on topic, we deviate into intricate discussion on hypnotic states, past-life regression, quantum entanglement, acid dreams of UFO chimneys, shadow-stealing goblins, and even mysterious trains full of masquerading aliens! Yes, it just gets weirder and weirder!

==============

Huge THANK YOU!!! to Barbara Fisher for allowing me to use her amazing artwork as the episode art!

Huge THANK YOU!!! to Puxley for emerging from under his rock and allowing the world to hear his incredible mind once more!

==============

Huge THANK YOU!!! to Fred Andersson for sharing so many weird stories, and leaving off on an adventure in the ghost train! Thankfully he returned safely and alive, though he claims to feel dead inside, as usual.

High Strangeness in Sweden - with Fred Andersson

High Strangeness in Sweden - with Fred Andersson

Fred returns to share tales of ghost rockets, Scandinavian trolls, clowns, mummies, and even floating boxes!

Fred Andersson is an author, Fortean researcher, and a producer of Scandinavia's #1 paranormal streaming show Spökjakt. His upcoming book "Northern Lights: High Strangeness in Sweden" chronicles some of the most bizarre cases of UFO weirdness dug up from the annals of Swedish ufology.

Along the way we lose our sanity discussing flaps of vampire, mummy and even clown sightings, attempted alien abductions which I misheard as involving freakin' dragons, trolls stuck in people's houses, gnomes emerging from floating light orbs, and how sharing ghostly experiences often serves as a gateway to safely talk about high strangeness!

==============

Huge THANK YOU!!! to Fred Andersson for sharing so many weird stories, becoming a close friend, and even quoting me in his upcoming book!

Shrimpless in Seattle - with Garrett Kelly of Liminal Earth

Shrimpless in Seattle - with Garrett Kelly of Liminal Earth

Garett shares his zany adventures sleuthing for, and ultimately embodying, a mysterious shrimp creature!

Garrett Kelly is the co-founder of Liminal Earth, a crowd-sourced online map of the weird and unusual. In his spare time he also enjoys investigating anomalous occurrences in and around the urban environments of Bremerton and Seattle... sometimes while dressed in a shrimp costume!

So what's the deal with the shrimp? Well... upon moving to Bremerton, WA, he learned of an old magazine article detailing a witness's terrifying encounter with a 5-foot tall shrimp creature lurking in her basement.

This case sent Garrett on a wild goose chase, encountering clues and synchronicities leading him to piles of peeled oranges, a mysterious goggled man, hidden shrimp-infested creeks, an abandoned dream park, child-stealing snail women, and a profound realization that such strange journeys help remind us of the innate magic hidden within our own cities!

======================

Huge THANK YOU!!! to Garrett Kelly of Liminal Earth for sharing these hilarious glimpses into the unknown and his efforts to reintroduce a bit of mystery in his urban community! ❤️

Adventures in Fortean Zoology - with Richard Freeman

Adventures in Fortean Zoology - with Richard Freeman

A full-time cryptozoologist shares stories of his expeditions around the world tracking the most elusive cryptids!

Richard Freeman is an author, former zookeeper, and the Zoological Director for the Centre for Fortean Zoology, who organize international expeditions in search of cryptids which very likely might exist: the Orang-Pendek of Sumatra, living specimens of the Tasmanian wolf, Giant anacondas of the Amazon, and even the Mongolian death worm!

Though Richard is a flesh-and-blood cryptozoologist, he is also a fellow Fortean, so along the way we also discuss paranormal activity, light phenomena, high strangeness, and the possibility that numerous cryptids might actually be otherworldly entities, and dare we even say... tulpas!

I highly recommend reading Richard's books "Adventures in Cryptozoology - Volumes I and II", which you may find on Amazon

======================

Huge THANK YOU!!! to Richard Freeman for sitting down to speak with a huge fan of his work, and sharing that it is well worth keeping an open, and even paranormal, mind when researching cryptids ❤️

Why So Sad, Squonk? - with Lisa Russell of Cryptid Comforts

Why So Sad, Squonk? - with Lisa Russell of Cryptid Comforts

Lisa from Cryptid Comforts shares her journey and role in revitalizing the myth of the Squonk, an oftentimes overlooked critter of lumberjack lore, probably because it cries itself into a puddle of tears if you even look at it!

Lisa is best known for traveling to cryptid conventions all across the States with the cutest assortment of cryptid stuffies you will ever lay your eyes on! But in an attempt to defy the shyness of the Squonk, she deemed 2022 The Year of The Squonk, started dressing in full costume as the Squonk, and even authored a children's book about the Squonk!

I know I said the word Squonk too many times here, but it seems people can't get enough of the Squonk! It is cute, it is sad, it has remained hidden for over a century only to boom in popularity the past few years, and with the help of Lisa get its very own convention later this year: Squonkapalooza!

Be sure to plan a trip to Central Park, Johnstown, PA on August 26th for this inaugural Squonk convention!

Bizarre Beasties - with Kate Shaw from Strange Animals Podcast

Kate joins in on my wild frenzy as we nerd over weird animals, parasites, poop, and our mutual hate for Bigfoot!

As the host of Strange Animals Podcast, Kate spends each week meticulously researching unusual animal species with all their magnificent adaptations. At over 300 episodes and counting, she still finds herself blown away by the sheer number of animals left to discover and learn about!

Today we joined forces to share stories of photosynthetic slugs, creepy deep sea fish, nasty parasites, giant prehistoric bugs, and an insane amount of poop-eaters! But along the way we put our debunker caps on to completely stomp over your love for Bigfoot, Nessie and aliens! Because real animals are so much cooler!

I highly recommend checking Kate's book "Beyond Bigfoot & Nessie: Lesser-Known Mystery Animals from Around the World" on Amazon

Artificial Imagining - with Jonathan Dodd, Easton Hawk and Todd Purse

An amazing assortment of weirdo artists join to discuss the implications of A.I. on the future of art and creativity.

Jonathan, Easton and Todd amalgamate their imaginal forces to whoop the ass of our corporate overlords, while I try to remain neutral and pretend like I have not been exploiting A.I. to create episode art for a while now!

Along the way Todd co-hosts the episode which you may also find on his feed today, Easton attempts to share the secrets of the trade but is censored by a phantom train, Jonathan desperately tries to settle down his dog thinking I would not notice during editing, and I put my biologist cap on in an attempt to sound smart as a non-artist impostor among professionals!

Meet Easton Hawk and his amazing humanly-made artwork TODAY at Frogman Festival in Mason, Ohio!
