TRACK! Episode 51 - George Schwiening

This week on TRACK! We are delighted to be joined by marathon runner and newly announced England athlete for the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in July; George Schwiening. George ran her marathon PB of almost 4 minutes clocking a 2.31.25 in Manchester during which she secured third place and both the European and Commonwealth Games qualifying time. George runs for Cambridge Runners, and has a background in duathlon in which she has won a World Junior Championship (2013), European U23 Championship (2014) and was the bronze medalist at senior level in 2018, at the World Championship in Fyn, Denmark. George is, for now, focused on marathon running and will hit the streets of Birmingham in an England vest in July so we are delighted that she has agreed to chat to us here at TRACK!

TRACK! Episode 50 - Andrew Heyes

This week on TRACK! We are delighted to be joined by the recently announced GB selected marathon runner - Andrew Heyes. Andrew made his marathon debut at Manchester 3 weeks ago; running 2.13.53, finishing in 5th place subsequently securing his place for the GB team for the upcoming European championships in Munich in August. Andrew has been coached by GB marathon Mara Yamauchi since 2021, runs for Hallamshire, is part of UK Anti-Doping's Athletes Commission and has recently completed his PhD in the psycho-social aspects of athletic doping. Andrew won the British indoor 3,000m champs in 2018 whilst being coached by Steve Vernon, spent time in the College system in the states at Tulsa University and has a wealth of experience in the sport -  so we are delighted he has agreed to chat to us here at TRACK!

This week on TRACK! We are delighted to be joined by England athlete, marathon runner and newly announced GB athlete for the upcoming European Championships in Munich; Naomi Mitchell. Naomi ran her marathon PB of 2.30.54 in Manchester last week during which she secured second place and both the European and Commonwealth Games qualifying time. Naomi runs for Reading AC, recently won Wokingham Half Marathon in her build up to Manchester and earlier this year represented England for the first time running the Granollers Half Marathon so we are delighted that she has agreed to chat to us here at TRACK!

This week on TRACK! We are delighted to be joined by a GB international athlete and recent winner of the Inter-Counties Cross Country race at Prestwold Hall - Mhiair Maclennan. Mhairi is a three-time Scottish National XC champion, has represented GB at the European and World XC Championships and also has impressive PBs across the distances.
Mhairi is a passionate advocate for women’s sport and is the co-founder of the Kynisca advocacy organisation which aims to develop a sporting community which fosters a safe environment and has the protection of women at its heart.
We are speaking to Mhairi about a week after her Inter-counties win and are delighted she has agreed to talk to us here at TRACK!

We are speaking to Becky, who runs for City of Hull, but who is based at St Mary’s University, about a week after she ran a Half Marathon at Wokingham in a time of 73.51 for a 2nd placed finish and discuss all things racing, training, women's British marathon running and more.

TRACK! Episode 42 - Dan Robinson - The Oregano Project

This week on TRACK! We are delighted to be joined by a man of many talents; Dan Robinson. Dan is an accomplished runner, with personal bests including sub 9 minutes for 3km, a 31.18 10km, a 69 minute half marathon, and a sub-2.30 marathon. Dan is also a coach with a number of years experience with some high achieving athletes. Alongside this, Dan has a full-time position at the University of Wolverhampton within the Sport & Exercise Science department, in which he has a particular interest  in sports psychology, with a research profile centred on, amongst other topics, emotional regulation during endurance performance and psychological strategies to aid performance. Despite all of this however, the main focus of our chat today is on a non-for -profit cafe and organisation called the Oregano Project - a project designed to provide employment opportunities and support for refugee runners and locals struggling to hold down positions that Dan is at the heart of alongside Lucie Tait-Harris, an accomplished runner in her own right

TRACK! Episode 38 - Karl Welborn

This week on TRACK! We are delighted to be joined by a man who has just ran a marathon PB of 2.21.36 at the recent London marathon, a time good enough to secure him 7th place of the 40,000 mass runners and to win the V40 Abbots World Championship prize, Karl Welborn.

Karl has impressive PBs across a range of distances including a 67.54 HM at this year's Village Bakery Half Marathon and 14.47 for 5km at this year's Mid Cheshire 5km highlighting Karl’s continued progression in the sport having spent his youth playing elite level basketball.

Alongside his impressive running Karl works as an Occupational Therapist, a job in which he works with individuals recovering from serious conditions and physical injuries. Karl also coaches athletes and is the proud founder of the training group Team Marathon Road, a selection of runners chasing their own goals and PBs in the sport -  so we’re delighted Karl  has joined us here at TRACK!

Erin has had a fantastic year, winning a 1500m bronze medal at the European U23 Championships after a silver at the British Championships. Erin is part of a very successful crop of Scottish middle distance runners and is coached by Andy Young, along with Laura Muir and Jemma Reekie. We are talking to Tom after a very successful recent block of racing during which he has won both the Podium 5km in April and more recently a BMC 5,000m on the track at Trafford in May both in a time of 13.39. We also spoke to Tom the day after it was announced that he has been Selected to represent GB at the European Team Championships 5000m in Poland on the 29th May. Tom, runs for Stroud AC, currently trains at Loughborough University and has also had successes on the cross country scene where he has represented Great Britain. Tom has also had a stellar junior career which saw him represent both England and Great Britain.

TRACK! Episode 25 - Jake Smith

This week on TRACK! We are delighted to be joined by one of the most exciting British talents around - Jake Smith. We are talking to Jake less than a week after he ran a marathon debut of 2.11.00 at the Cheshire Elite Marathon having originally been in the race scheduled to pace the lead group for 25km.
Jake ran the time having ran a PB in the 1500m of 3.50.89 just a few days before and within the midst of a 90+ mile training week. Jake’s previous most well-known recent breakthrough performance came at the World Half Marathon Championships in Gydinia where he ran 60 minutes and 31 seconds to finish in 18th position and became the third fastest half marathon ever by a British athlete. Jake has also run times of 13.47 for 5,000m and is hoping to achieve the Olympic 10,000m qualifying standard and compete at the Olympic Trials in Birmingham on June 5th.
At the club level, Jake runs for Cardiff AC and has recently been described as the future of UK distance running so we’re delighted Jake has taken some time out to chat all things running with us. Thanks for listening, we hope you enjoy.

This week on TRACK! we are joined by UK middle-distance running royalty, Christina Boxer. Christina was a consistently selected GB athlete between 1978 and 1992 over the 800 and 1500m distances.  She is a 3 time Olympian, Gold medalist at the Commonwealth Games and has the distinction of being the first British female to run under 2 minutes in the 800m. Christina followed her time competing as a respected athletics journalist with ITV and BBC as well as embarking on a coaching career that has seen her work with Jo Pavey and Charlotte Moore. We are lucky to have Christina as a coach at Worcester AC which has allowed us to get to know her and convince her to give up her time for a chat.

Verity is fresh from her Bronze medal win in the 3,000m at the European Indoor Championships in Torun, Poland in the same race as Amelia Quirk took fifth position and Amy-Eloise Markovc won Gold. Verity who runs for Swansea and has PBs of 4.12, 8.46 and 15.34 for the 1,500m, 3,000m and 5,000m respectively sat down and talked all things running and pre-race tunes with Cat.

This week on TRACK! we are excited to talk to one of the UK’s fastest male athletes, Jack Gray. Jack has proven to be a versatile athlete on the road, track and country and has excelled at all distances from the 800m up to making his marathon debut at the COVID secure race in London last year. Jack has represented England on the road, GB on the track and is currently running for the high achieving Cambridge & Coleridge club under the coaching of Mark Vile. Jack has PBs of 13.47 for 5km, 28.57 for 10km, 63.15 for the half-marathon and 2.20 for the marathon. TRACK! Episode 18 - Hayley Carruthers

This week on TRACK! We are delighted to be joined by an athlete who has been described as one of the biggest revelations in British elite distance running in years. Hayley Carruthers has impressive PBs from 1500m to the marathon distance with a best time of 2.32 over 26.2 miles. Hayley runs for BRAT, has represented England over the marathon distance and has recently become a HOKA One One sponsored runner.

Hayley came to a wider audience’s attention in 2019 when competing at the LDN Marathon finishing in a time of 2.34. Although Hayley is a relative latecomer to running, having only taken the sport up seriously in 2016, her progression in that time highlights her potential in the coming years so we are delighted that she has agreed to take some time out to talk all things running with us here at TRACK!

Josh is based in Cardiff and runs for Cardiff AC after previously running for Bedford & County AC. Josh has impressive PB's across a range of distances and looks set to have a long and successful marathon career.

This week on TRACK! we are delighted to be talking to Mike Boucher.  Mike has been a strong club runner for over 20 years building up a huge amount of experiences over all distances with PBs including 69.39 for the Half Marathon and 2.28 for the Marathon.  As well as training to race at a consistent level, Mike has been heavily involved with the successful Aldershot, Farnham and District senior men’s team. As the team manager Mike has had huge success with a club that has boasted some of the best runners the UK have produced in recent times, including wins at the National Road Relays.

TRACK! Episode 11 - Dan Nash

This week on TRACK! We are delighted to be joined by marathon and ultra runner Dan Nash. Dan is a Cardiff AC runner who holds the British 50km record of 2.49.01 which he set in 2019 in Romania during the IAU 50km World Championships whilst winning an individual and team bronze medal. Dan also has impressive PBs across a range of distances from 1500m to marathon with a marathon best of 2.18 also from 2019 at the Brighton Marathon.

At the time of recording we were four days after the LDN marathon in which Dan took to the lapped course of St James Park amongst some of the best marathon runners in the World. In the build up to the event Dan gained some media attention in response to the way he secured his place on the start line but has also been gaining popularity through his openness regarding his training and preparations for his racing.

Dan is currently studying for a PhD in Exercise physiology at Cardiff Met University, works as a Sports physiologist for Welsh Athletics and also has a coaching role so we are delighted that Dan has taken some time out of his very busy schedule to discuss all things running with us here at TRACK!

This week on TRACK! we are delighted to be joined by one of the most exciting prospects in distance running; GB and Charnwood athlete Samantha Harrison. Samantha has impressive PB’s over all distances from 1500 to the Marathon and has notched some notable performances in some high profile races.  What makes Samantha’s story even more interesting is that she has only been running competitively since 2019.  Samantha runs for Charnwood in Nottingham, is ranked as the 14th UK female and is working with the respected coach Vince Wilson to keep improving.  We were excited to talk to Samantha a week after after the announcement that she has been selected to represent GB at the World Half Marathon Championships in Gdynia Poland and a week or so before the race on October 17th.

TRACK! Episode 9 - Aaron Scott

This week on TRACK! we are delighted to be joined by Aaron Scott. Aaron is an elite distance runner with impressive PBs across a full range of distances, particularly at the longer events including a 65.50 Half-marathon and a 2.16 marathon best. At the club level Aaron runs for Bedford & County, but has also been part of winning teams at the Northern road relay championships as a Lincoln Wellington athlete. Aaron has raced across the track, road and country and continues to string high mileage training weeks together throughout the year.

Aaron’s current marathon PB was set at the Frankfurt marathon in October 2018 and in Frankfurt in 2019; Aaron represented England finishing in 21st position in a time of 2.17.05, as the second Englishman to cross the line. At the time of recording Aaron was two weeks away from taking to the streets of LDN to once again race a marathon, this time the lapped LDN marathon in St James Park in a bio-secure environment amongst the likes of Eliud Kipchoge and a very strong field of fellow brits. So we were delighted that Aaron took some time out to discuss all things running with us at TRACK!

TRACK! Episode 8 - Chris & Sonia McGeorge

TRACK! Episode 8 - Chris & Sonia McGeorge

This week on TRACK! we are delighted to be joined by Chris and Sonia McGeorge.  Chris and Sonia competed on the global stage multiple times between them with Sonia running in the 5,000m at the Atlanta Olympic Games in 1996 and Chris winning a bronze medal in the 800m at the Commonwealth Games in 1982. The pair have impressive PBs across a range of distances such as 8:51.33 (3000m - 34th UK all time), 15:29.04 (5000m - 38th UK all time), and 15:47 (5K road - 23rd UK all time) for Sonia and 1:45.14 (800m - 26th UK all time, 9th best UK U23 all time), 2:17.45 (1000m, 17th UK all time), 3:39.41 (1500m), and 3:56.71 (mile) for Chris.

Chris and Sonia are currently coaches at Loughborough University, coaching some of the top British middle distance talent in the country having both studied at Loughborough themselves so we are delighted that they joined us to talk all things training, racing and coaching with us here at TRACK!

TRACK! Episode 7 - Jenny Nesbitt

This week on TRACK! We are delighted to be joined by Jenny Nesbitt. Jenny is a HOKA One One sponsored athlete currently located in Cardiff. Jenny has impressive PBs from 3,000m to the half marathon and is a regular in track, road and cross country races throughout the year. Jenny began her athletics career with Worcester AC as part of  Dave Walker’s successful group and won the Worcester City 10km in 2017. More recently, Jenny competed in the Commonwealth Games in 2018 on the Gold Coast in Australia in the 10,000m and in 2019 had brilliant performances in both the Welsh National XC Champs and the Inter Counties XC Champs in which she won both races. Jenny went on to race in the European and World XC Championships that year and continues to race across the club scene and is set to continue her brilliant career in the sport. Jenny has managed to jump back in to a few races since lockdown restrictions have been eased and most notably competed at the British Championships this weekend in Manchester in the 5,000m event clocking a time of 16.10 in 9th place, so we are delighted that she has agreed to talk all things running with us here at TRACK!

TRACK! Episode 6 - Andrew Davies

This week on TRACK! We are joined by M40 British Marathon record holder, welsh and GB athlete Andrew Davies. Andrew is a frequent racer across the UK club scene and has fast PBs from 3,000m to ultra-distances. In 2019 Andrew broke the m40 marathon record in Valencia with an impressive 2.14.36. Andrew is no stranger to big events having raced at the Commonwealth Games twice in 2014 and 2018, the World Marathon and half marathon Championships, as well as in the 50km World Championships in Doha where he finished in 5th position. In addition to the 50km ultra distance events, Andrew has also competed in the World Masters Mountain Running Championships and fell running races and enjoys racing across a range of distances and surfaces.  Andrew runs for Stockport Harriers AC and Mercia Fell Runners. Andrew kindly agreed to sit down with us at TRACK! To talk all things running and in particular competing on the World stage. We hope you enjoy!
