A discussion and diagnosis of the intersection between work and learning. Various guests will discuss the modern challenges within the workplace and how learning can be integrated to develop further skills and professional development. The discussion will include perspectives from formal university learning as well as informal learning linked to training and development, coaching and other such forms. Guests will therefore include university students, lecturers, those from companies and coaches. Key concepts such as work integrated learning and human capital will also be discussed.

A chat with Ella Ovenden, Higher degree Apprentice from IMB Ella is Co-lead of Girls in Data which is an organization that aims to inspire and normalize a career in data to girls from 5-18 years old through informing, exposing and dispelling the myths in the industry. We have launched a curriculum called The Inspiration Sessions which include several lesson plans and workshops for young girls aged 11-17 which aim to show girls how cool it is to work in Data and what kind of projects they can get involved in. The curriculum involves activities all focused on skills that can be used in the data industry such as data visualization, coding, AI ethics & design as well as incorporating soft skills that are also super important in the data industry. The USP of this curriculum is that it is delivered by a Women in Data who acts a role model for students and can bring their own lessons learnt and storytelling to the students. Deputy Head of Department: (CEP, SLPs and Online)  in the Department of Applied Information Systems. She is a member of Universities South Africa (USAf) World of Work Strategy Group, and Partner of Work-Integrated Learning South Africa (WILSA)  under the auspices of THENSA.

She has been involved in Work Integrated Learning for 13 years and obtained her PhD in Information Management with the title: An Information Management Framework for the Work-Integrated Learning Process. Prof Roelien Brink is currently involved with research on Work Integrated Learning (WIL) that is being conducted in Ireland and South Africa. She is the lead researcher for WILSA on an  environmental scan research of Work-Integrated Learning landscape in South Africa.

She is the Vice Chair Africa on the International Research group for World Association for Cooperative Education (WACE) – Research for work-integrated learning, She was part of the advisory board for the World Association for Cooperative Education (WACE) Second International Research Symposium 2016. She is also part of the international review team for the WACE 2nd International Research Symposium and WACE 20th World Conference.

Part of the Emerald Insight Editorial Guest Team for the PCL International WIL Unconference, Higher Education Skills and Work Based Learning Journal.
