BJ was unharmed, but turned out to be a really reliable witness. When the perpetrator discovered the identity of the boy who ratted him out, he finished the job of his first attempt, and then made moves to eliminate the star witness of his trial and ended up killing his mother too. Listen in to hear the heart-wrenching story of a brave little boy whose life was lost trying to do what was good, and his mom who was killed trying to protect her son.

This week, the girls dive wicked deep into the tragically complicated and sinister history of the Ladd School, an institution that was built in 1909 in Exeter, Rhode Island with the sole purpose of housing individuals with intellectual disabilities and teaching them life skills to reintegrate them into society. This very decent-sounding plan did not last very long, as for the next nearly nine decades, hundreds of people were subjected to extreme neglect, deplorable living conditions, and lack of basic human rights. This was largely done with the hidden motive of eugenics- the idea of stopping people of "an undesirable stock" from reproducing. In 1994, the Ladd School finally closed, leaving a legacy of haunting memories and deep regret in its place.

Luckily, in 2019, Harry's murderer was brought to justice and was charged while already serving time in jail for another homicide. Then, Liz shares the details of the murder of Benjamin Baez, who was killed in 2003, just over a year after his brother, in Hartford, Connecticut. Benjamin had been shot, and it wasn't until 2015 that his murderer was finally brought to justice.

Episode 111: The Murder of Krista Dittmeyer

On this week's episode of True Crime New England, Katie and Liz talk about the tragic story of the murder of Krista Dittmeyer. In 2011, 20-year-old mother Krista was living in Portland, Maine, and supporting herself and her 14-month-old daughter while her boyfriend was in jail. On the night of April 22nd, Krista was lured to the Ossipee, New Hampshire home of Michael Petelis, where she was ambushed by him and an accomplice, Anthony Papile. She was then driven to the Cranmore Mountain Ski Area and dumped in a snowmaking pond, where she ultimately died of prolonged cold water submersion. Her killers, as well as a third accomplice who drove the getaway car, were all charged and are serving time for Krista's brutal murder.

Episode 110: The Attacks of Melissa Walbridge and Meghan O'Rourke

On this week's episode of True Crime New England, Katie and Liz talk about the tragic attacks of two 12-year-old besties out of Essex Junction, Vermont in May of 1981. Melissa Walbridge and Meghan O'Rourke were leaving school a little late and opted to take a shortcut through the woods, only to be met by the malicious 16-year-old Louis Hamlin III and his evil little sidekick, 15-year-old Jamie Savage. The teenage boys ambushed the girls, forcing them to remove their clothes before they choked them, raped them, stabbed them, and shot them with pellet guns. Miraculously, Meghan survived the attack, while Melissa passed from her injuries. Subsequently, the state of Vermont was thrown into a massive rage when Jamie was only sentenced to juvenile detention until his 18th birthday, and was thereafter a free man, while Louis was sentenced to much longer due to being over the age of 16.

Liz starts the episode off by telling the story of the murder of Jakeem Tully. In 2008, Hartford, Connecticut police were called to a hospital to discover 15-year-old Jakeem, who had been fatally shot. His case has never been solved, despite there being a large amount of witnesses. Then, Katie tells the horribly crazy story of the disappearance of Haidar Abushaqra, who went missing out of Manchester, Connecticut, after having a work-related meeting with some mechanics at his car dealership one night in 2011. He was never seen again and his case remains unsolved. On this week's episode of True Crime New England, Katie and Liz take a deep dive into the life of William Sarmento, a deeply troubled and extremely mentally ill man whose whole childhood and teenage years were marked by strange behavior and impulsivity. As he grew older, more situations began to unfold around him, from being institutionalized several times to threatening a younger boy with a knife over a bicycle. When William was just 21-years-old in the winter of 1987, he killed two little boys in Rhode Island just a month apart from one another. As a result of his mental illness, William was found not guilty by reason of insanity and is still living his days in a mental institution in Cranston, Rhode Island.

Join the girls of True Crime New England this week as they head to the northern counties of Maine and share the details of an 18-hour crime spree. In July of 2015, 35-year-old Anthony Lord kidnapped his 22-year-old ex-girlfriend, brought her to a remote cabin, and raped her four times, before releasing her with the promise of never speaking a word to anyone. When the ex-girlfriend obviously reported Anthony's assaults to police and he was contacted as a result, he lost his mind and went crazy. Starting with arson, sprinkling in stealing and high-speed chases, and ending with the murder of two people, Anthony finally was arrested without incident. To this day, he is spending two life sentences at the Maine State Prison in Warren, Maine.

Katie starts the episode off by sharing the details of the murder of Charline Rosemond. In April of 2009, Charline borrowed her dad's car to run some errands and failed to return home. Several days later, she was found in the car with a single bullet wound to her head and all of her money missing. Her case remains unsolved. Then, Liz tells the story of the shooting murder of 35-year-old Samuel Nieves out of Fitchburg, Massachusetts, who was found shot inside his apartment. The police wrote it off as gang violence and no one has ever been deemed responsible. Episode 107: The Disappearance of James Lusher

On this week's episode of True Crime New England, Katie and Liz tell the story of a missing boy and how his disappearance led to a confession over twenty years later. In November of 1992, 16-year-old James "Jamie" Lusher got on his bike and supposedly headed to his grandmother's house in Blandford, Massachusetts, which was over 12 miles away. He never made it there, and the only clue to his sudden disappearance was his bike being found a little while later near a pond. Nothing happened with his case until 2013, when already-convicted child killer Lewis Lent Jr. admitted to Jamie's murder. He sent police on a wild goose chase for Jamie's remains, but nothing was ever found. To this day, Lewis remains in jail and refuses to give the actual location of Jamie's body, as well as at least one other child's body.

Episode 106: Michael Bruce Ross

On this week's episode of True Crime New England, Katie and Liz take a deep dive into the life and crimes of Connecticut serial killer, Michael Bruce Ross. Between the years of 1981 to 1984, Michael brutally strangled eight young women, sexually assaulting seven of them. After his arrest, Michael was sent to prison and sentenced to death, and proceeded to sit on death row for more than 20 years. Despite having been confirmed as the killer of all eight of these victims, he didn't get charged with one of them. In 2005, Michael was executed by lethal injection.
