140. Red Hot Chili Peppers’ By The Way (2002) - Is It Too Long?

Summary

By The Way (2002) is a brilliant album by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. But at nearly 70 minutes in duration, could it have been even better with some careful pruning?

That’s the task podcast hosts Stephen & Paul, plus their guest Ross Braidwood, have set themselves in this episode: Create the under 50 minute TTMF Supercut of By The Way.

On the way the guys will discuss their level of fandom for the band, review the critical reception and commercial success of the album, share their favorite songs and least favorite track from the record, and discuss the impact of guitarist John Frusciante on the album's sound.

They also discuss the best time for the band to retire and whether they are happy that the band is still active. The conversation ends with a discussion about the top Red Hot Chili Peppers songs of all time.

124. Bruce Springsteen 1975 - 1987: Episode 6 ‘Tunnel of Love’ (1987)

It’s the penultimate episode of our Bruce Springsteen side-series as we take a look at The Boss’s albums from 1975 to 1987 to create the ultimate under 50-minute Bruce singles collection from that period.

How do you follow the biggest album of your career? You go against the grain and record an album almost solely by yourself focussing on relationship struggles. That album is ‘Tunnel of Love’ (1987), which features the singles ‘Brilliant Disguise’ & ‘Tougher Than The Rest’.

Joining us sailing down the tunnel is regular guest Davie Melon. And, travelling all the way from the US to join us, is Bruce super-fan and award winning writer Renee James*. Interesting fact: Renee got to meet Bruce in 1978!

121. Bruce Springsteen 1975 - 1987: Episode 5 ‘Born in the USA’ (1984)

“Glory days, well they'll pass you by”. Podcast co-host Stephen has gotten into Bruce Springsteen in a big way this year (2023). So much so that he’s corralled friend and lifelong Boss fan Davie Melon into joining him for a Springsteen side-series covering his studio output from 1975 to 1987. So join them on their aural adventure from ‘Born to Run’ to ‘Tunnel of Love’ as they critique and rank each album, and create the ultimate under 50 minute, single vinyl Springsteen singles collection. In this, the fifth episode, we revisit Springsteen’s seventh album, by some margin his greatest commercial success - ‘Born in the USA’ (1984). The Boss sold over 29M copies of the album & scored 7 top ten US hit singles from it, including his biggest seller ‘Dancing in the Dark’. Despite its huge success, do Stephen & Davie think the album is on par with Springsteen’s previous releases? Are there any non-singles which deserve more attention? What do they think of each single and where would they rank them? Listen now to find out. Also, look out for archive interview clips, promos and album facts. Come back next month for ‘Tunnel of Love’ (1987). Like the podcast? 120. The Beatles’ ‘Now And Then’ (2023) - was it worth the wait?

It’s finally here! The last (?) ever Beatles song. It’s called ‘Now and Then’, and it was released yesterday (2nd Nov, 2023). Beatles fans Paul & Stephen had to get together to discuss this exciting event. So, here they are! What do they think of ‘Now and Then’? Is it better than John Lennon’s original demo? How does it compare to ‘Free as a Bird’ and ‘Real Love’? Would they like these songs to be revisited and given the same AI treatment? Listen now to find out. Like the podcast? 119. Creating the Ultimate 21st Century REM Song Collection

R.E.M. are releasing their final 4 studio albums on vinyl before Christmas 2023 (Reveal (2001), Around the Sun (2004), Accelerate (2008), and Collapse into Now (2011)). So, after placing his pre-order, podcast co-host (and REM fan) Stephen thought it was time to go solo and revisit the albums with the following scenario: What if the band’s record label (Warner Bros) wanted a 21st Century REM best-of which had to include 3 tracks from each album; which tracks would he pick? Join Stephen as he critiques each record; reminisces about the time of their release; and makes his song selections. Like the podcast? “Mister state trooper, please don't stop me”. Podcast co-host Stephen has gotten into Bruce Springsteen in a big way this year (2023). So much so that he’s corralled friend and lifelong Boss fan Davie Melon into joining him for a Springsteen side-series covering his studio output from 1975 to 1987. In this, the fourth episode, we revisit Springsteen’s sixth album - ‘Nebraska’. A 4M+ selling acoustic album from 1982. Home to the classic single ‘Atlantic City’, it finds Springsteen in a solemn & thoughtful mood. And for the first time, there is dissection in the ranks! Stephen & Davie disagree on the merits of the album. One thinks it’s an absolute classic. The other mid-tier Bruce. Where will they rank the singles released from it? Listen now to find out. In this, the second episode, we check out Springsteen’s fourth album - ‘Darkness on the Edge of Town’. A 5M+ selling classic from 1978. Home to the singles ‘Badlands’, ‘Prove It All Night’ & ‘The Promised Land’, it finds Springsteen stripping back the wall of sound production of its predecessor, Born to Run (1975), for a rawer hard rock sound emphasising the (E-Street) band as a whole. This was the first Springsteen album Davie ever bought (in the 1990s). Stephen only heard the album for the first time this year! What do they think of it? Will they rank it top tier? 109. Genesis’ The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway (1974) - Should It Have Been A Single Album?

109. Genesis’ The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway (1974) - Should It Have Been A Single Album?

One of our most requested episodes ever is for Genesis’ ‘The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway’ (1974) double album. So finally, here it is! Regarded by many Genesis fans as the band’s most audacious and greatest work, Lamb is a challenging 95 minute listen (the band’s longest studio record). A concept album following the fictional character of Rael, it was the last Genesis album to feature original lead singer, and future solo star, Peter Gabriel. Who stepped up to replace him on 1976’s ‘A Trick of the Tail’? Drummer and future solo superstar Phil Collins. Podcast hosts Stephen & Paul are followers of the band (Stephen seen them play live in 1992). However, they have a preference for the more commercial, Collins-led material when the band slimmed down to only 3 members (Collins, Tony Banks & Mike Rutherford). How would they cope with full on seventies prog-rock? With an album they had previously avoided due to run-time and reputation? With song titles like ‘The Colony of Slippermen’ and ‘The Grand Parade of Lifeless Packaging’? Should it have been this long? As many friends have commented, would it have worked better as a single album? What tracks would have been selected if the band had to have released it to fit on a single vinyl record (under 50 minutes)? That’s the task Stephen & Paul have set themselves. After critiquing the record & creating their own cut, will they agree that the original release was too long? Listen now to find out. Also, look out for Genesis facts, archive interview clips, jokes and much more!  Next week’s release is dedicated to Bruce Springsteen’s 1978 album ‘Darkness on the Edge of Town’. Like the podcast? 105. Bruce Springsteen 1975 to 1987: Episode 1 ‘Born to Run’ (1975)

Bruuuuuuuuce! First up is Springsteen’s breakthrough album ‘Born to Run’. A 10M+ selling undisputed classic from 1975. Home to the legendary title track and it’s only other single ‘10th Avenue Freeze Out’. Stephen only heard the album for the first time this year. Davie’s been listening to it forever! What do they think of it? Will they rank it top tier? Where would they rank the two singles? Listen to hear their thoughts. Also, look out for archive interview clips, promos and the guys’ discussion about seeing Bruce in concert later that month. Come back next month for ‘Darkness on the Edge of Town’ (1978). Like the podcast? 104. R.E.M.’s New Adventures in Hi-Fi (1996) - Is it too long?

104. R.E.M.’s New Adventures in Hi-Fi (1996) - Is it too long?

Regarded by many R.E.M. fans as their greatest album, ‘New Adventures in Hi-Fi’ (1996) is a unique entry in the band’s canon. Recorded predominately at sound-checks on their mammoth ‘Monster’ tour, the album was a worldwide number one (although not in the US) & was the band’s first release after signing a then record-breaking album deal with Warner Bros. However, it was the band’s last release to feature original drummer Bill Berry & marked the start of a perceived artistic and commercial decline. Oh, it’s also the band’s longest studio album (65 minutes). Should it have been this long? Would some careful pruning have helped make it more palatable for a wider audience? What tracks would have been selected if the band had to have released it to fit on a single vinyl record (under 50 minutes)? That’s the task podcast hosts Stephen, Paul & their guest Davie Melon have set themselves. After critiquing the record & creating their own cut, will they agree that the original release was too long? Listen now to find out. Also, look out for R.E.M. facts, archive interview clips, jokes and much more! Come back soon for another R.E.M. pod looking at underrated tracks from each of their studio albums. Next week’s release is dedicated to Bruce Springsteen’s classic 1975 album ‘Born To Run’. Like the podcast? 102. What’s The Worst Song on The Doors’ Strange Days (1967)?

102. What’s The Worst Song on The Doors’ Strange Days (1967)?

TRIMMING THE CLASSIC POD: “When the musics over, turn off the lights…“ The Doors’ sophomore album, 1967’s ‘Strange Days’, was overshadowed by the continued success of their self-titled debut album which was released earlier that year. Unfairly so say podcast hosts Stephen & Paul Nicholson. Containing ‘Love Me Two Times’, ‘People Are Strange’ and ‘When The Music’s Over’, it is an undoubted classic. But which songs are least deserving of a place on it? Which are the best? That’s what Stephen & Paul discuss whilst critiquing the record. Like the podcast? 94. Why A-ha’s Scoundrel Days (1986) is Great!

HIDDEN PRIME CUTS POD: A-ha’s second album ‘Scoundrel Days’ was another huge success for the band, selling 6M copies worldwide. The singles from the album were ‘I’m Losing You’, ‘Cry Wolf’ & ‘Manhattan Skyline’. But, right at the beginning of the album, is perhaps its greatest song: The title track. Podcast hosts Stephen & Paul, along with guest Bry, relisten to ‘Scoundrel Days’, critique it & reminisce about seeing the band live in 1988. Interesting fact: Unlike their first album ‘Hunting High & Low’, band singer Morten Harket did not contribute to the songwriting on ‘Scoundrel Days’. Guest is Bryan Borthwick. Like the podcast?
