Rev. Dr. Matthew Williams preaches on finding hope in the wilderness: "The wilderness is different for everyone. But the heart and gut feelings are the same. Estranged families and broken relationships are wilderness areas. Those who struggle with dependency and their families wander in the wilderness. Those who are victims to gun violence, who lack affordable housing, and who are victims to exploitation seem to perpetually dwell in the wilderness. The wilderness is different for everyone but we all experience it. Jesus was tempted while he fasted and prayed in the wilderness for 40 days and 40 nights. Each time he was tempted by the devil, he responded with the words of God. We, too, respond with the words of God. Herein lies our hope."

It was not the mission of Jesus to be poised on a mountain and above the people. It was his mission to be among people in their everyday lives. After the Transfiguration, Jesus makes an exodus back down the mountain. Jesus is indeed the bread of life and the cup of salvation, but he couldn’t take staying on the mountain and pressing the repeat button on “this is my son, with whom I am well pleased.” He knew he had to leave the mountain to engage the world. "In Matthew 5:21-37, Jesus challenges the traditional understanding of the law by emphasizing the importance of not only following the letter of the law, but also the spirit of it. He teaches that anger is equivalent to murder, lust is equivalent to adultery, and that it is essential to avoid breaking the law and actively seek to live a righteous life. True righteousness goes beyond just preventing sinful actions but encompasses attitudes and thoughts too! Strive for a higher living standard, one marked by love, peace, and righteousness! " Rev. "When the world asks Christians the question, “Who are you?” the Church can respond with the answer, “We are the baptized.” We have buried our lives of being slaves of sin and the world and have been born anew and set afire by the Holy Spirit. We have risen to new life in Christ, we are claimed, we are spirit-filled, and we are set free. We are the people who have joined in the baptism of Jesus - and Jesus alone is our teacher, who came to the world but was not of it.

This coming Sunday is the day in the church year where we remember our Baptisms and reclaim the promises of God in our lives. It is a day where we recommit to live our lives in the primary identity of who we are - the baptized. It is a day when we receive once again the gift and empowerment of the Holy Spirit."

"As Luke often does, we read this week of an upsetting of the status quo of society. Our general assumptions that the rich are inherently good or worthy and the poor are inherently bad or unworthy are completely reversed in the telling of this story and most of Luke’s gospel. The compassion and work of justice on behalf of the poor is a clear instruction in this story; we must follow Jesus’s commands and listen when he speaks.”

His point might not be about setting some high standard for following him; it might be to encourage us that when we face adversity, we look for him rather than anything else in our lives."

"In this week’s Gospel Lesson, Luke the gospel writer is being hospitable toward us by calling us to participate in this parable, nudging us to extend God’s hospitality throughout our community and our world. When we dine together, we not only share food but we share who we are. We find God’s loving humility in that we have been welcomed, loved, and accepted, and we are sent from the table to carry God’s humble message of love to the world."

“It is easy for a group of people to say they are a welcoming bunch. How many church signs and emails have we seen that say something like “All are welcome!” or “Everyone invited!”? Many churches are as faithful as they can be, and many have come to know Christ through the hospitality of churches. Still, Jesus reminds us that a true welcoming heart requires all walls to break down, all expectations to lift, and we humble ourselves for all others to feel included.”
