a brief history of some of my favorite cats, and their favorite drug of choice. 

Spoiler alert: like many of the stories in this series, it is sad. 

There was something about Portland that gave me courage. I don't know if it was the weather, or the fact that I had a job where I was respected, or if it was all that incredible beer (and let me tell you, the beer was OUTSTANDING) or if it was the rain, but it was something. I only wish that I had banked some of that courage for the future.

How to meet new neighbors in a new city!

Step one: Move across the country where you know one person

Step two: have an accident

In that weird in-between time of high school and college summer jobs, in the days before internships and real jobs, I worked at the most magical summer resort. If you remember the movie Dirty Dancing--you know this resort.  

My father's signature meal. After he got sober and changed jobs, my mother started working two nights a week at a halfway house. Dad and I took turns making dinner but neither of us were particularly skilled in the kitchen, but we liked what we ate. 

Sometimes, it isn't the holiday, but all the rituals AROUND the holiday that is the special part. Oh, and the leftovers. 

The first of many stories about what I did on my summer vacations. 😬

What is that one thing you cooked for all your old lovers? The thing that you were sure made you irresistible? 

Sometimes you cannot get that smell out of your nose. Or the things you see out of your head. 

There's something about other people's kitchens that I will always love--probably because they have always been safe harbor for me (for the most part) and the very first (and for the next several decades) "family" kitchen for me was the Roch's kitchen where I learned how to make Macaroni and Cheese. 

This is the First Chocolate Cake.

This whole series started out as a literal recipe box that I still have, more than 25? maybe more? years later. I was looking at it as a creative writing prompt.

Even though I keep a lot of my recipes in an online recipe keeper now because I am afraid of losing them, I still have my little recipe box, and all the cards. And every single one of them, even the ones not represented in this series, tell a story.
