This podcast is about raising awareness about the impact of alcohol misuse on families, educating everyone about alcohol addiction, discussing news and views to change perceptions and judgements. Changing and influencing social norms. Opening the conversation outside of the immediate issue and into society. There are no limits of discussion that we wouldn't take part in and encourage others to do the same. Alcoholism needs to be an education to others.

Jo and Paula are sisters who share the two roads they've travelled through alcohol misuse.

005 - Through the eyes of the drinker
Welcome to episode 5 of The Two Roads Travelled Podcast. Today you'll get an alternative view of alcohol misuse, a different perspective maybe one you might not have heard before or that might make you second think an alcoholic. No one chooses this path, not everyone becomes an alcoholic, it’s a bit like not everyone is diabetic. The struggles and battles an alcoholic goes through can be soul destroying, sometimes life and death are your only options. There are survivors in addiction, sadly not everyone makes it. But the survivor’s try to help others because they have the real understanding, and a way of giving back in their own recovery. Today we have John McMahon with us talking about his experience and the addictive personality linked so closely to addiction and the way it affected him and people around him at the time. John is a trained counsellor, ex university lecturer and recovering alcoholic. John runs Bottled-up with his wife Lou supporting those affected and their families. Offering an online membership as well as one to one sessions.   Get in touch on Instagram: @johuey_acoa or follow on Twitter @joanne_huey  If you want to know more about alcohol misuse, find out answers to the many questions you have and learn some tried and tested self help tips from the child of a alcoholic then order a copy of Jo's book Transition here: bit.ly/JHtransition  You can also join the Change Your Mind community of Facebook: facebook.com/groups/CYM2017  If you'd like to ask any questions about today's episode feel free to email jo@johuey.co.uk or call on: UK (+44) 07732 403305

004 - The Sinclair Method
Welcome to episode 4 of the two roads travelled podcast.  There has been a change to the schedule, this week Jo and Paula are chatting to Joanna from the C3 Foundation Europe.  Today Paula and Jo will be talking with Joanna from the C3 Foundation European, the award winning charity. They'll be discussing The Sinclair Method (TSM), this is a medication assisted treatment for Alcohol Use Disorder. The medication is available from GP's and has been for quite some time, not that you'd know it! This is a subject that not a lot of people will be aware of, but one that many people could benefit from before becoming a alcohol dependant. Alongside the medication there is full psychosocial support for the drinker as well as their families. Here are the links we talk about in the podcast. 003 - Impact of alcohol misuse on families
Welcome to episode 3 of the two roads travelled podcast.  Today Paula and Jo will be chatting to Kevin Hempstead from KH Counselling, Kevin is a humanistic counsellor with extensive experience in addiction, childhood sexual abuse and bereavement, he works with people one to one as well as facilitating groups. The topic for today is about the impact of alcohol misuse on the families. They'll be discussing what the home environment is really like, how the families clash with the drinker and they'll be delving deeper into what the families experience day to day. In such a chaotic environment for a lot of families, emotions run high. Unconsciously the families take on specific roles when they live with a drinker, and those roles can enable the drinker to drink and take away their consequences. Jo and Paula will share about the roles they've played living with their fathers drinking. An interesting aspect of living with a drinker is that most of the time, families actually don't understand that much about alcohol, the reasons their drinker drinks or the impact it has on them. They often have a lot of questions with few answers. Also on the discussion list is how the involvement of professionals like social workers impacts the family, and the risks that are present for children. Those of you listening have probably experienced it first hand and those that haven't, you're in for some real insights into the life that families live each and every day when they're affected by a drinker. A lot of what Jo, Paula and Kevin will talk about today is also applicable to other addictions. 000 - Two Roads Travelled Introduction
Hello and welcome Jo and Paula are two sisters, who have experienced living with and being affected by alcohol and we had different ways of dealing with life and the complications it threw at us. Being at polar ends of our coping strategies, after many years we've come to the same agreement, alcohol needs to be discussed and put out there because it damages and kills. We chose "Two Roads Travelled" to identify the different paths that family members can take when being affected, you are unique and your journey is your own.   The purpose of the podcast is to raise awareness about the impact of alcohol misuse on families, educating  everyone about alcohol addiction, discussing news and views to change  perceptions and judgements. Changing and influencing social norms. Opening the  conversation outside of the immediate and into society. There are no limits of  discussion that we wouldn't take part in and encourage others to do the same.  Alcoholism needs to be an education to others.  We can't wait to share, connect and support you in whichever way we can. You only need to listen to this introduction if you're new to the podcast.
