Life After Christmas (Ep. 109)

Life After Christmas (Ep. 109)

Pastor Cronkright and Pastor Hill bring 2022 to a close. In this episode we review the Christmas happenings at our churches and introduce a Bonhoeffer contemporary, Alfred Delp, a Jesuit priest who was also martyred by Hitler's Nazi regime. We ALSO have a big announcement:

This is the last episode of Jesus, Dietrich, and Me. We will be continuing an EXPANDED discussion on the new Suffering Servants Podcast in 2023. Look for it in January! More information will come early next week.

Follies this week include Whoopi Goldberg and (shockingly!) the lying American government.

Christmas In A Cold Prison (Ep. 108)

Christmas In A Cold Prison (Ep. 108)

Today we take a look at an interesting piece from Desiring God about Dietrich's first Christmas in prison. We talk about prison life, the two-sided coin of Christmas (waiting and suffering), desiring to be rescued, and how suffering brings a more meaningful and authentic Christmas.

Follies of the week include scientific exploding toilets and vaccinated Christmas.

God Is With Us (Ep. 107)

God Is With Us (Ep. 107)

"God is with us." That is the message of Dietrich on April 15, 1928 for Easter. It is the same message for Christmas 2022: "God is with us." On this episode we talk about what that means for us in our day-to-day lives. God is with us whether we like it or not. How will we respond?

This week's follies include the Georgia Senate "race" and the racism of Shark Week!

The Frightening Side Of Advent (Ep. 106)

The Frightening Side Of Advent (Ep. 106)

Maybe there is more to Christmas and Advent than what we are often told in the movies, television shows, books, and music (spoiler: there is). Today we take a look at an article from Jeff Walters from Southern Seminary, who flushes out some of Bonhoeffer's preaching on Advent. To Dietrich, Advent means waiting. It also means judgment. At the end of the day, the baby in the manger is your Savior and your Messiah...but He is also your Judge. At Christmas, the apocalypse begins!

Follies include Black Friday and the spineless Justin Trudeau.

Thanksgiving, Accountability, & Canceling Christmas? (Ep. 105)

Churches are canceling Christmas Day service? Why? We continue discussing Bonhoeffer's secret weapons for resisting evil, one of which is true accountability with your brother (sister). We also spend a little time near the end talking about Thanksgiving. Have a listen!

The Sacramental Bonhoeffer (Ep. 103)

The Sacramental Bonhoeffer (Ep. 103)

In this episode, we close out the controversial article from episode 102. We discuss religionless Christianity, understanding God's Word, the parts of Scripture that "don't matter," and venerating God's Word simply because its God's Word. Dietrich holds God's Word in such high regard because at the end of the day, he is Sacramental. He believes God reveals himself to us in the written, spoken, and tangible Word that is Jesus Christ.

Follies this week include Twitter and Election Day 2022.

Troubling Theology (Ep. 102)

Troubling Theology (Ep. 102)

Here we go again with another article of criticism, this time paired with an article of defense by JW Wartick. In this episode we discuss the importance of context and dive a little deeper into "religionless Christianity," which Bonhoeffer (and we), reject.

Episode 100 - Psalm 100 & Joy, Apathy, and Proposal 3

Well, we did it! 100 episodes. On this episode we discuss Psalm 100. Dietrich addresses his students from Finkenwalde and talks about the danger of apathy. Have our churches grown apathetic? How can that be dangerous to 21st Century Christianity? We also take a moment to address Michigan's Proposal 3 and the "right" to reproductive freedom.

This week's follies include a new Covid variant, Turkish boarder control, and an absurd video used by extreme leftists to scare you into voting Democrat.

Joyce Meyer & Pride (Ep. 96)

We return from a one week hiatus to conclude Bonhoeffer's mediation on Psalm 119. We cover a whole plethora of topics ranging from Joyce Meyer, to longing for God's Word, to pride and arrogance. Psalm 119 - A Stranger In A Strange Land (Ep. 95)

On this episode we continue the discussion of Psalm 119. Stay tuned to the end of the episode for a story from Pastor Jim, highlighting the struggles of Family of God.

Psalm 74 - The Night Of Broken Glass (Kristallnacht) (Ep. 93)

Psalm 74 - The Night Of Broken Glass (Kristallnacht) (Ep. 93)

November 9, 1938 has become known in German history as "The Night of Broken Glass" or Kristallnacht. On this night, Nazis in Germany torched synagogues, vandalized Jewish homes, schools and businesses and killed close to 100 Jews. Dietrich, becoming more and more frustrated with the Church's response to persecution, took to his Bible and underlined a single verse in Psalm 74. We discuss all of that and more on today's episode.

Follies of the week include a revisit to the New York "pastor" who was robbed of millions of dollars in jewelry & sexualization of television commercials.

Psalm 85 - Is Pacifism The Right Approach? (Ep. 92)

It is rare when Pastor Hill disagrees with our good friend Dietrich. But his views of pacifism in the church spark a good discussion on today's episode. Can the church be pacific? Should it be? Is there a "distinction" between the God of the Old Testament and the God of the New Testament?

Defending Dietrich (Ep. 74)

Defending Dietrich (Ep. 74)

Troubled by critique of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, specifically The Cost of Discipleship, Pastor Cronkright takes a MAJOR detour from the intended topic today and guides a discussion with Pastor Hill refuting some of the bold claims from Dietrich Bonhoeffer's critics. Was Dietrich REALLY Lutheran? Is discipleship law or is it rooted in the Gospel? We discuss this and more as we (again) introduce his letters and papers from prison.

Worldy Christianity (Ep. 72)

Worldy Christianity (Ep. 72)

Dietrich lands himself in prison, causing many people to question his authenticity as a follower of Christ. His "Letters and Papers from Prison" suggest otherwise, however. Dietrich strips Christianity to nothing but the cross of Christ, calling for the Church to be a church for the world. To be otherwise, as he would say, is to deny the Gospel.
