The Croods - Movie Night Episode #09

The Croods - Movie Night Episode #09

Welcome to Movie Night! Today, I sat down with my friend, Cali Rogers and watched her favorite movie with her: 2013’s The Croods. Directed by Kirk DeMicco and Chris Sanders, and starring Nicolas Cage and Emma Stone, The Croods is an animated feature based on a family of cavemen. The central conflict follows Eep, a young girl who is tired of her father, Ugg, and his overprotective rules. However, when Eep meets Guy, a care-free, adventure-loving inventor, a new philosophy of progress inspires her and the rest of the Croods’ family. Except Ugg, of course. A solid, albeit imperfect, family comedy, The Croods works for what it is. Join myself, Tyler Marston, and Cali as we discuss this prehistoric pow-wow on tonight’s Movie Night!

10 Things I Hate About You - Movie Night Episode #05

10 Things I Hate About You - Movie Night Episode #05

Welcome to Movie Night! Today, I sat down with my friend, Grace Farish and watched her favorite movie with her: 1999’s 10 Things I Hate About You. Directed by Gil Junger, and starring Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles, 10 Things I Hate About You is a modern adaptation of Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew. The film follows the high school romances of the Stratford sisters: the pretty, popular Bianca, and the snarky, misanthropic Kat. To prevent any immorality, their father will only allow Bianca to date a boy if Kat also has a date, something unlikely to happen. What unfolds is a love parallelogram of sorts as this Shakespearean classic becomes a late-90’s defining rom-com. Join myself, Tyler Marston, and Grace as we discuss the modernized classic on tonight’s Movie Night!

Birdman - Movie Night Episode #03

Welcome to Movie Night! Today, I sat down with my friend, Jordan Moore and watched his favorite movie with him: 2014’s Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance). Directed by Alejandro Inarritu, and starring Michael Keaton, Edward Norton, and Emma Stone, Birdman follows has-been superhero actor Riggan Thompson as he attempts to rekindle his public image by writing, directing, and starring in a high-brow Broadway play. However, it’s a lot harder than it appears. He’s surrounded by problems, both personal and professional, which creates a mental illness that manifests itself as Birdman’s voice inside Riggan’s head. An intriguing story backed up by creative camerawork and a very unique score, Birdman is a journey of self-realization, something we all must do eventually in our own lives. Zootopia - Movie Night Episode #02

Zootopia - Movie Night Episode #02

Welcome to Movie Night! Today, I sat down with my friend, Hye Sun Choi and watched her favorite movie with her: 2016’s Zootopia. Directed by Byron Howard and Rich Moore, and starring Ginnifer Goodwin and Jason Bateman, Zootopia takes place in a world filled with anthropomorphic animals about a bunny, Judy Hopps, who is an aspiring police officer. However, conflict arises when she is told that she is too soft for the job, creating an allegory for our world about racial stereotyping. When an otter goes missing, Judy joins forces with a seedy street-smart fox, Nick Wilde, to solve the case and prove herself as a valuable part of the ZPD. With a well-written story and super cute and funny moments, Zootopia allows for general family entertainment, while also pushing the envelope with its social undercurrents. Join myself, Tyler Marston, and Choi as we discuss this award-winning animated feature on tonight’s Movie Night!

Ella Enchanted - Movie Night Episode #01

Ella Enchanted - Movie Night Episode #01

Welcome to Movie Night! Today, I sat down with my wonderful girlfriend, Jessie Vaughn and watched her favorite movie with her: 2004’s Ella Enchanted. Directed by Tommy O’Haver and starring Anne Hathaway, Ella Enchanted is a cutesy, heartfelt fairy tale story about a village girl cursed to obey anything that anyone tells her to do. However, conflict arises in the midst of a corrupt government where Ella feels that civil disobedience is necessary. Very dramatic! A product of its era, Ella Enchanted is wrapped in tropes from the early aughts; you can practically see the Juicy Couture sweatpants. Nevertheless, it is a charming feature that leaves you with a warm, bubbly feeling in your stomach that, plainly, makes you feel good. Join myself, Tyler Marston, and Jessie as we discuss this modern fairy tale on tonight’s Movie Night!
