Today we learn with Chris Weeks, VP, Humanitarian Affairs at Deutsche Post DHL and Dr Craig Hansen, UARD.  Chris Weeks is VP, Humanitarian Affairs for DeutschePost DHL. He is the founder of DHL's Disaster Response Team, which helps airports cope with a sudden surge in aid traffic (cargo and passengers) after natural disasters. He has recruited, trained and equipped over 700 DHL employees to form three volunteer teams located in countries around Panama, Dubai and Singapore. These teams support UN agencies and NGOs by providing emergency ground handling at the nearest airport following a major sudden-onset natural disaster.   Chris also runs a logistics preparedness programme for DHL called GARD - Getting Airports Ready for Disasters. With DHL colleagues, he runs week-long workshops at the main airports in developing countries at risk of natural disasters. Chris has led workshops in Bangladesh, Indonesia, Turkey, Lebanon, El Salvador and Philippinnes.  Chris is British, based W Sussex UK and has 25 years experience in Express Logistics. He has first hand experience of Airport Logistics following many major disasters including the Asian Tsunami, Hurricane Katrina, Cyclone Nargis in Myanmar, 2011 floods in Pakistan and earthquakes in Kashmir, Peru, Indonesia, Haiti, Chile and Nepal.   He regularly speaks on how major Companies can get involved in CSR activities and lectures on his specialist subject “Humanitarian Logistics”.  He is on constant standby to lead DHL’s pro bono efforts following the next major disaster. After a 42 year career with DHL, with the last 15 being in Humanitarian Affairs, Chris is about to retire. DHL has set up three Disaster Response Teams staffed by 700 employee volunteers. Their mission is to help airports cope with the surge in relief freight following major natural disasters.

Carys is also an Associate Member of the CIPD, the UK’s leading body for People Professionals, and is a Mentor for their  Steps Ahead programme which supports young people with their career development.  Carys’ passion is in supporting individuals with their personal development and unlocking their potential. As part of her CIPD study, Carys carried out research on how L&D can more effectively support adult learners with dyslexia in the workplace. He is also an Adjunct Professor in the Graduate Program at York University’s Emergency and Disaster Management program.  He began his insurance career at Toronto-based the Personal Insurance Company of Canada and went on to work for a major Canadian corporate law firm before joining Swiss Re in 1994 and the ICLR in November, 2005.  As an insurance writer and commentator, his work has been widely disseminated across Canada. Glenn has written more than 275 magazine and journal articles, newspaper essays, publications and blogposts on a range of issues for Canadian Underwriter, Canadian Insurance, Municipal World, Disaster Management Canada, Canadian Consulting Engineer, The Lawyers Weekly, The Conversation and The Globe and Mail, as well as for the International Journal of Insurance Law. He has appeared on CBC's The National and The Exchange, CTV's Your Morning and Power Play, TVO's The Agenda, CP24, and CBC Radio's The Current and Cross Country Checkup, as well as several other television and radio news and interview programs. Jake Wolf, Emergency Management Specialist for California DoE
In this episode we hear of the experiences of Jake Wolf, Emergency Management Specialist for California Department of Education and Dr Craig Hansen, UARD. Jake Wolf is an Emergency Manager (EM) with a diverse background. Starting his early career with over a decade in fire and emergency medical services (EMS), he served in many different roles locally within the county EMS structure including continuous quality improvement programs and policy development. He has served in executive roles for private industries such as assisted living, memory care, service and maintenance, and more. His EM career includes state level public health EM as the Emergency Support Function 8 (Public Health and Medical) Liaison for the California Governors Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES), Task Force Coordinator, Operations, and many others. As part of the Planning and Preparedness Branch at Cal OES, Jake was responsible for developing hazard specific annexes to State Emergency Plan, supporting the development of catastrophic plans, and the inception of many different Standard Operating Procedures, Guidelines, and Guidance for state and local government’s. Currently, Jake is the EM Specialist for the State of California’s Education Agency, servicing the largest state population of k-12 students in America and is creating the agencies Department Operations Center, as well as drafting the first of its kind, State level K-12 Education Emergency Operations Plan.
