EP16 | Charlie Engle: From crack addiction to running 4500 miles across the Sahara Desert

EP16 | Charlie Engle: From crack addiction to running 4500 miles across the Sahara Desert

After a decade-long addiction to crack cocaine and alcohol, Charlie Engle hit bottom with a near-fatal six-day binge that ended in a hail of bullets. As Engle got sober, he turned to running, which became his lifeline, his pastime, and his salvation.

He began with marathons, and when marathons weren't far enough, he began to take on ultramarathons, races that went for thirty-five, fifty, and sometimes hundreds of miles, traveling to some of the most unforgiving places on earth to race. The Matt Damon-produced documentary, Running the Sahara, followed Engle as he led a team on a harrowing, record breaking 4,500-mile run across the Sahara Desert, which helped raise millions of dollars for charity.

Charlie's growing notoriety led to an investigation and a subsequent unjust conviction for mortgage fraud. Engle would spend sixteen months in federal prison in Beckley, West Virginia. While in jail, he pounded the small prison track, running endlessly in circles. Soon his fellow inmates were joining him, struggling to keep their spirits up in dehumanizing circumstances.

In his book, Running Man, Charlie Engle tells the gripping, surprising, funny, emotional, and inspiring story of his life, detailing his setbacks and struggles--from coping with addiction to serving time in prison--and how he blazed a path to freedom by putting one foot in front of the other. This is a propulsive, raw, and triumphant story about finding the threshold of human endurance, and transcending it.

In this episode:

  • How he got Matt Damon to executive produce his run across the Sahara
  • Life in prison and changing lives through his personal mission
  • Why Charlie creates his own hurdles in life

EP13 | Freezy Macbones: How to dominate your self doubt and fear

EP13 | Freezy Macbones: How to dominate your self doubt and fear

Meet the guy who is known as ‘Britain's Mike Tyson’.

Capturing the attention of rapper 50 Cent and world boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, his menacing ring persona, he prefers to be called 'Freezy MacBones', has only added to the intimidating aura that surrounds the explosive light-heavyweight.

A quick glimpse at the social media account of 'Freezy MacBones' reveals a collection of startling stoppage wins and the 'peekaboo' fighting style that Tyson adopted during his destructive world title reign.

He has perfected this old school approach, even switching trainers after being advised to become more orthodox, and 'exciting offers' have been made ahead of the 31-year-old's entry to the pro ranks. Not bad for a guy who only began boxing four years ago after arriving from Ghana in 2012.

In this episode:

  • Imposter syndrome and managing fear
  • Embracing losing, managing your ego
  • The work ethic and habits of a boxer

EP11 | Dr. Sean Pastuch: What it takes to scale ourselves to the next level

Dr. Sean grew up around the fitness, health, and wellness industry. And when he graduated Chiro school, he ended up opening a clinic and a CrossFit gym. He didn’t want to be that Chiro who tells you, “You need to this exercise and be on “X” program.” Then, pat you on the back and say see you next week.

He works with people and athletes, who don’t want to deal with pain and injury anymore. And at the same time, don’t want to stop their training or don’t want to keep modifying their workouts every time there’s a workout that has overhead movements.

With hands-on experience running a gym that does functional movements and treating people with injuries or previous injuries, which surface from having to move functionally, Sean started getting busier. And because of his unique approach he started getting requests from clients that used to see him but moved to another city asking for workout programs.

In this episode:

  • The importance of making ourselves obsolete.
  • Why it’s important to work on yourself five times more than your business.
  • Why Sean uses the saying “start and then move out of your fishbowl” as a guide to mentorship

EP8 | Dr. Rebecca Heiss: How our instincts hold us back from being our best self

EP8 | Dr. Rebecca Heiss: How our instincts hold us back from being our best self

Our brains aren’t built for this world.

They are built to keep us alive.

The brain shortcuts that kept us safe for 200,000 years are the same ones that today prevent us from living our most powerful, productive, and purposeful lives.

However, when we fear less, we make room for more. More creativity, connection, abundance, innovation, and joy.

We deserve to forge beyond the limiting instincts that keep us locked into stress and anxiety.

This conversation with Dr. Rebecca Heiss explains how we can identify when our brain goes into survival mode and the effective methods to ensure we live to thrive, not survive.

In this episode:

  • How to replace Automatic Negative Thoughts (ANTs) and instincts with alternative methods
  • Types of fear we carry and how to harness them correctly
  • Why Rebecca recommends the book ‘Bad Feminist’ to give us a better understanding of evolutionary gender roles that create confusion around masculinity

EP5 | Emilia Lahti: Turning pain into purpose using Sisu

EP5 | Emilia Lahti: Turning pain into purpose using Sisu

What is the great lesson we have with the pain we go through in life?

By adopting an action mindset known as ‘Sisu’.

Sisu is a Finnish concept described as stoic determination, the tenacity of purpose, grit, bravery, resilience, and hardiness. It also seems to contribute to something that I have named the action mindset: a consistent, courageous approach toward challenges that at first seem to exceed our capabilities.

This is where RJ speaks with Emilia Lahti, the founder of Sisu Labs.

In her work, she integrates elements from both science and spirituality and what she views as the biggest challenge of our time is that of consciousness and how to support people in self-realization. The purpose of this is to have a competitive edge too because to be compassionate, human-centred and have integrity makes people work better and it creates better results in the long run.

Emilia has a master's degree in social psychology from the University of Tampere in Finland and in a master's in applied positive psychology from the University of Pennsylvania. She is a former student of Dr. Martin Seligman and began researching the Finnish construct of sisu under the mentorship of MacArthur Fellow recipient and research professor Dr. Angela Duckworth in 2012.

In this episode:

  • The importance of trusting your gut, the relevance of your gut-brain.
  • Why perpetuating positivity through micro-actions is ideal to build effective habits
  • How we have lost connection with our bodies and intuitive side.

EP4 | Dr. Suzanne Peterson: The subtleties of great leadership

What does it take to be a great leader?

Many people believe leadership is about characteristics and that it's something you either have or you don't. Once listeners understand that leadership is not a temperament but a choice, they are more apt to engage in their own development.

Choosing to engage in certain habits leads one to create incredible amounts of loyalty and followership. Dr. Peterson provides counsel and coaching to senior leaders in a variety of industries. Emphasizing leadership style and credibility, effective communication, and relationship building as building blocks to leadership success, she helps propel her clients towards excellence.

Dr. Peterson is a highly sought-after speaker where she shares the CRA message of Admired Leadership®- a viewpoint that emphasizes the behaviours that characterize the world’s most effective leaders. Dr. Peterson is a leadership professor at the Thunderbird School of Global Management where she advises and delivers executive education to a variety of global companies.
