“I think, just as in Jesus’ time, people were so used to doing things the way they have gotten used to it. Sanay na sanay na silang gawin ‘yong mga bagay ayon sa kanilang nakasanayan, ayon sa kanilang kagustuhan. But Jesus, just like the Holy Spirit is dynamic. Ito ‘yong laging sinasabi ng Santo Papa. Iniimbitahan ko po kayong basahin ‘yong kanyang mga homiliya. He would always tell us, ‘the Holy Spirit is dynamic.’ Jesus does not cage himself in traditions, although traditions are very good for us. Don’t get me wrong, when I was a Protestant, I used to tell people na lahat ng mga tradisyon, hindi ‘yan dapat sinusunod. Mali po ‘yan. Because the Church is built on traditions. But what is being presented in the Gospel here is, we have to be humble enough to allow ourselves to be challenged in the way we live our faith.”

“Remember that when we sin, it always has a social dimension. When you sin, you do not sin alone, you take with you your name as a Christian and therefore you wound the Church. You commit an offense not only to God but to the Church where you belong. Halimbawa, sa Filipino culture, kapag may ginawa kang kalokohan, tangay mo ang magulang mo at ang buong pamilya mo. And then I was just really feeling bad. And then the Jesuit priest said, ‘JPaul, you are young. And mukha kang maraming passion na bata, mukhang gigil kang human being. So, did you know that prayer is not only contemplative. The contemplative side of the Catholic faith is beautiful but maybe masiyado ka pang bata or wala ka pa d’yan. So what I want you to do is when you serve, serve with all your heart. So pag may activity ‘yong Church o ‘yong community, pag nagpulot ka ng basura, treat it as if you’re praying to God. When you welcome people, treat it as you’re praying to God. So everything you do, diba very Jesuit na, it is your prayer to God.’ So that slowly moved me, that slowly transformed my heart to falling in love with God.”

As a former anti-Catholic Protestant, I really agree that these are the things that I didn’t see. And grabe, ‘nong sinabi ni Jay ‘yong Al Habayith, ‘nong na realize ko ‘yong Gebirah when I converted. Talagang ‘yong reaction ko parang—‘Oh my gosh. It’s making sense now.’ Na parang, ‘Kaya pala may Santo Papa.’ Mamaya, makikita natin when you read the book of Isaiah 22, makikita mo na ‘yong ‘Al Habayith’, siya ‘yong ‘prime minister,’ siya ‘yong administrador ng lahat ng mga pag-aari at ng buong kaharian habang wala ‘yong hari at ang tawag sa kanya is para siyang magiging ama ng kaharian, kaya ‘Papa.’ So doon pala nanggaling ‘yong ‘Santo Papa’. “I found a lot people, Catholic and non-Catholic, really interested in the early history of the church. And for the non-Catholics, it proved to be very challenging because they were not able to find their own faith or their own churches in the first few centuries of the church. “Once na you forget si God, even kahit pa onti-onti. Parang nag sno-snowball effect. Most of the people siguro that time did not intend to make an act of rebellion kaagad or kalimutan si God.
