Gabby's Reinventing A World of Beauty with Existing Materials
Earth Day was celebrated just two days ago but my guest this week takes actions every day to show love for our planet. Gabby Lynn is not only a friend, but a podcast sponsor as well. She is the creative maker and mind behind the business of Reinvented Threads. Gabby says, "I owe my love of fabric to my mother, who loved to sew….and love of all things repurposed to my Father, who introduced me to the ‘one person’s trash is another’s treasure’ mindset at a very young age! I was destined to bring those together as Reinvented Threads, adding my love for the environment into the mix."This week we reminisce a bit about Gabby's time in her birthplace the United Kingdom; we talk about her love of thrift shops and disdain for fast fashion and her peaceful pastimes on the water and in the woods. Thank you to my sponsor Budget Through Life with Emily Hickox who helps to ensure this content is produced each week. Follow Budget Through Life on Facebook and Instagram and watch for information about upcoming Financial Literacy Workshops for kids. Thank you to my sponsor Reinvented Threads for supporting the content created through this podcast each week. A Passion for Bringing Women Together
Viktor Frankl wrote an impactful book called "Man's Search for Meaning" in which he says the search for meaning is the primary driving force in human life, and that even in the face of immense suffering, we can find meaning through purposeful work, love, and courage in the face of adversity. NEPA resident Melissa Roberts has found meaning and purpose in her life, and part of that involves helping other women to identify and foster their passion. In addition to her passion for nature and its ability to heal--something she promotes in her business Ski Shack--Melissa shares details about forming a nonprofit so others can enjoy the beauty of the outdoors. We also talk about her Wild Women NEPA movement and the upcoming Passion to Profit, Women's Small Business Summit on March 30 that is a collaboration with Dress for Success of Luzerne County. Here is the previous conversation with Melissa that was referenced in this episode. Here is the conversation with Linda Loop of Dress for Success that was referenced in this episode. Natalie Is Setting the Stage for Girls to Rock
There's no question that there are glass ceilings yet to be broken and that girls do not have as many role models to look up to in many areas as boys do. But...we have made progress and things ARE changing!Scranton native Natalie Jurosky, who now lives in Orlando, is one woman leading that change so that young girls can gain confidence, musical skills and have a blast rocking out in their own style. Natalie founded the nonprofit Scranton Girls Rock and will bring its first summer camp to NEPA this July. But first--Natalie has organized a fundraiser for the camp that will take place on March 14th at the VSpot in Scranton. It's a great line-up of female bands who will rock to help young girls do the same. Learn about Scranton Girls Rock here: how you can volunteer, register your daughter/granddaughter/niece for the camp, make a donation, and learn about the bands playing in the fundraiser. Be sure to follow on Instagram to stay updated. A BIG 'thank you' goes out to Emily Hickox of Budget Through Life as we celebrate one year of her being my podcast sponsor. Christine's Traveling Life's Highway with Her Own Map
Society's mores used to set the tone for personal milestones in life. And to some degree, I guess they still do, but times are a changing. So we don't have to follow the formula set by others. Factual Information Is Healthy for Everyone
"Hello social media user. I don't have the education or professional work experience in nutrition but I'm gonna tell you what to eat and what not to eat and you're gonna eat up every word and then lick the spoon-- because I have a million followers and I'm 'hot.'
Umm...stop! Please stop!
It's time to become more discriminating about the information you digest, because misinformation can be as harmful for you as the wrong foods, supplements or medicine.
This week my guests are registered dietitians Micki Orlowsky and Emily Fasciana who are serving up the truth, aka real facts, as in evidence-based information, about nutrtion. We're talking about diet drugs, TikTok trends, supplements and much more. But let's face it, our hunger for nutritional information can't be satiated in a one-hour conversation, so be sure to follow Emily and Micki's podcast The RD Squeeze on Spotify for the truth on other nutrition-related topics.

December Minisode: Keep Holiday Food Prep Less Stressed
I grew up in a household that was predominantly Irish with my Grandma Esther Dolan in the kitchen. As much as I loved this woman and as strong and wonderful a woman as she was, she was not known for any special family recipes or delicacies. And yet, we were still fed, nourished and managed to have a lovely holiday season. My mom, dad, gram, brother and I enjoyed many decorations, a beautiful tree, gifts and time together to celebrate Christmas and New Year's as happy celebrations.
Many families will have a long grocery list and even longer list of family recipes to prepare and that tends to get stressful. Some folks worry about making things perfect (and as we know, perfection is an illusion). So try to stress a bit less this season.
This week I'm happy to have a recorded message from my friend and previous guest Christina Hitchcock from It Is A Keeper Food Blog. She shares some ideas on how to make your holiday food prep less stressful and shares exciting news about what's up next for her. You can often find her on WNEP's Home and Backyard segment sharing amazing recipes and ideas for making fabulous meals in your kitchen.
Enjoy and I hope you'll take our advice and just enjoy what matters most. Forget about the sweet potato casserole that burned. It doesn't matter, truly!

Music that Sleighed and Slayed
If you're a regular listener then you most likely know who Melisse Brunet is. I had wonderful conversations with her in my August 15 and October 24 episodes. If you are not familiar, I suggest listening to these episodes because she is fantastic--a Paris-born native of France who became a U.S. citizen last winter, Melisse conducts the Northeastern Philharmonic as well as the Lexington, KY Philharmonic and guest lectures across the country at various colleges and universities. She was heavily featured in the documentary Maestra and is purely delightful, hopeful and inspirational.
Well yesterday afternoon I attended the Philharmonic's Holiday Pops concert that included singers from Wilkes University, Marywood University and the Choral Society of NEPA as well as musicians from the Valenches Music Company and dancers from the Ballet Theatre of Scranton and it did not disappoint. The performances were as sparkling and magnificent as the suit that Melisse was wearing (visit my Instagram RealFunny_Wine_Girl_Jeannine to see). Melisse conducted with such a fun, playful and joyful style that I was smiling through the whole concert. She is absolute fun and pizazz.
I wanted to share my thoughts so I recorded this Sunday evening after I left the concert.
I hope you'll support local arts in NEPA or wherever you live because it really does fill our hearts and connect us in ways that are vital to our humanness---to show one another kindness, empathy and love!

December Minisode: Music is my Muse
Happy Holiday Season-- which is to say: happy busy season! We're all out there bustling around like busy bees but remember to take time for some Zzzs and self-care!
In December I take a break from regular full episodes in which I uncork with new guests. This week I offer up a mini-sode musing about the importance of supporting the arts.
I am shining the spotlight on music, in particular, the Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic who is having their holiday shows this weekend in Wilkes-Barre and Scranton. I heard from a friendly elf that there might even be a visitor from the North Pole!
Tune in to hear a special invitation to attend these upcoming shows from the Philharmonic's very own conductor Melisse Brunet and Chason Goldschmitz, who will formally assume the role of executive director of the Philharmonic on Jan. 1, 2025 as Nancy Sanderson steps down from this position.
Goldschmitz joins the NEPA Philharmonic from the office of world-renowned soprano Renée Fleming, where he served as Director of Production, Music, and Arts & Health. In this role, he produced and supervised logistics for concerts, large-scale summits, and other public events, and served as producer and production engineer for Ms. Fleming’s multimedia events, including “Voice of Nature: The Anthropocene” performances in collaboration with National Geographic. Goldschmitz also coordinated arts and health research, policy, and funding initiatives on behalf of the Renée Fleming Foundation, in partnership with a diverse array of governmental partners and performing arts, healthcare, education, and community organizations — including the Kennedy Center, LA Opera, Johns Hopkins University, the Aspen Institute, Los Angeles County, the National Institutes of Health, and the World Health Organization.

Gab Is Moving Forward with Positivity
Whenever I want to feel energized and engaged, I reach out to my friend and serial podcast guest Gab Bonesso.
The Pittsburgh-based comedian, children's performer, public speaker and mental health advocate is always ready to have an open, honest and upbeat conversation.
In this week's episode, we have some light banter and we chat about Gab's mental health and tips that are keeping her on track.
Then we move on to a more serious conversation (ALERT: if you are tired of talk about emotions surrounding the election you might want to skip this part of the conversation) as we share our feelings after the 2024 Election, talking about the polarization and judgment we feel within the Democratic party and the importance of pushing forward with hope and positivity.
We also talk about how Gab is protecting her mental health since she is feeling the healthiest she's ever been. And Gab shares what's next as she takes on some new projects.
A big 'Thank You' to my podcast sponsor Budget Through Life for supporting me as I publish a new episode each week with the focus on amplifying the voices of women. JoAnna Talks about Effects of Mental Illness on Veterans' Families
Each month there are a variety of observances with the goal of holding our attention in this busy and noisy world.
November may not seem like a warm month, but I feel that it’s a month of warmth. We typically gather for Thanksgiving with family and friends and express our gratitude for one another and all that we have in our lives while enjoying fellowship and a good meal.
On Veterans' Day we honor and thank all who served in the military to protect our country. And November is also National Family Caregivers month.
So it seems like the ideal time to have a conversation with JoAnna VanTine, a woman who experienced the serious consequences of her ex-husband's mental illness and PTSD for which he did not seek treatment or help.
He served in the Marines and even met with a group of fellow veterans from time to time who shared their ailments but he never felt comfortable enough to say that he was having issues too.
As we celebrate Veterans Day on November 11, let's think about not only the men and women who serve and have served; let's think about their family members and how they are impacted by the experiences their loved ones have.
JoAnna works for NAMI Northeast Region PA as the community engagement and volunteer coordinator and often leads support groups and education programs for family members of individuals living with mental illness. She also recently became trained to reach NAMI Homefront to offer support for family members of veterans with mental illness.
If you are someone with a mental illness or if you are a friend, family member or caregiver of someone with a mental illness, know that you can find support through your local chapter of NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness). Of course you should seek treatment and therapy for any illness, but if you feel like you would like to have the support of people who have walked in your shoes and conversation with people who get it, reach out to your local NAMI Chapter. Support groups and programs are run by facilitators who have lived experience with mental illness.
If you live in Northeast PA, visit NAMI Northeast Region PA.

We're Letting the Cards Do the Talking
Tarot cards were initially used for playing games in Italy in the 1430s. The first tarot decks were created by adding a fifth suit of 21 cards called trionfi ("triumphs") and an extra card called il matto ("the fool") to the existing four-suited playing card deck. Wealthy families commissioned customized card decks from artists as a status symbol.
Tarot cards were not used for "divination" -- the practice of attempting to foretell the future or gain insight into a situation through the interpretation of omens, signs, or events-- until into the late 18th Century when the idea was introduced by Antoine Court de Gébelin, claiming that tarot cards originated in Egypt and were used for divination.
The classic Rider-Waite Tarot is the best known Tarot deck. The vibrant cards, featuring full scenes with figures and symbols, were drawn in 1909 by Pamela Colman Smith under direction of Arthur Edward Waite.
On this week's episode of Uncorked with Funny Wine Girl my good friend Michelle Morgan looks into the cards to see what could be in my future. We have a lot of laughs reminiscing about our past performing comedy improv together and share hopes for what's to come!

Melisse Opens Up about her Experience in Maestra
Paris native and American citizen Melisse Brunet is
conducting herself and orchestras in the only way she knows how--by being her true self and not conforming to others' ideas of what a woman conductor should
look like or do.
She spoke with me on this podcast a few months ago about her joy of becoming a U.S. citizen and her profession, and we briefly spoke about her being featured in the documentary "Maestra." This week we dive deeper into what the experience of competing in La Maestra was like and how she felt about being so honest and vulnerable in the documentary about a handful of the women in the competition.

She's Rep- resenting Us
With less than three weeks to go before Election Day, I wanted to talk with a woman who understands not only the importance of everyone rocking the vote, but also what is at stake for women in this election.
My guest this week is Democrat Rep of the 114th District Bridget Malloy Kosierowski.
She explains what she does in her role and why people should understand it so she can help. And she talks about her views on this election and why people need to take time to understand what is at stake.

Lisa Explores What Murals Mean to the Community
Art is one of those things that is not clearly defined. Sure some people might think it is because they might view it narrowly as only something that hangs in a gallery by a painter who has studied for years. But that is not what art is.
And murals are helping to prove that as artists take their art to the street.
We are fortunate here in NEPA to have many colorful murals in Scranton and the surrounding area--so many that one local artist, teacher and doctoral candidate chose to do her research about murals in the area and how people in the communities connect to them.
My guest this week is Lisa Murphy, an arts teacher in Hazleton, a mom, an artist herself and a student of Point Park University who will display the results of a summer research project with a reception at Afa Gallery on October 19. The art will remain on display after the opening.
Tune in to hear our conversation about the importance of community art, how it reflects a region's history and hope for the future and the importance of having everyone represented in such art.

Shirah's Literally Dreaming of Ways to Keep People Safe
I've listened to podcasts on sleep and its various phases and cycles, and it sounds a bit complex but also fascinating. So it's not too hard to believe that my guest this week came up with the idea for an amazing product that's sold over 700,000 pieces worldwide, in a dream.
Shirah Benarde was only 16 years old when she had a dream that led her to invent a product called NightCap the drink spiking prevention scrunchie. Shirah is more than a creative young entrepreneur though; she is an advocate fighting to help keep people safe, especially young women on college campuses where drink spiking often occurs.
Tune in to hear this amazing young woman share her story that includes closing a deal on the ABC hit show "Shark Tank."

Julie Esty Brings People Back to Life
I can't imagine riding the rails with hundreds of fourth graders. That's just not my vibe. But my guest this week, Julie Esty, lived it this past summer. Dressed in period costume, she and some friends hopped aboard a locomotive that departed from Steamtown National Historic Site to educate school kids and adults about the history of northeast PA.
Once she hung up the dress of a coal miner's wife, she headed to her attic for a costume change and began prepping for this year's The Dunmore Cemetery Tour, a wonderfully informative and entertaining walk through local history. Costumed interpreters tell stories of NEPA's past in vignettes along the tour route in the Dunmore Cemetery.
Tune in to hear this conversation with a woman who makes history fun. We always share a lot of laughs when I hear what Julie has been up to. If you can be in NEPA on Sundays, 9/29 and 10/6, head to the Dunmore Cemetery Tour. It's free and FUN!

Alyse Takes An Integrative Approach to Mental Health
Unfortunately, children of today have much more to be
anxious about than pop quizzes and whether or not tater tots will be served in the cafeteria. Mental health is a great concern for students and teachers alike. And mental health issues have been on the rise in general since the
pandemic.
According to my guest this week, it's fair to say there is a
crisis when it comes to the shortage of mental health providers available to serve everyone who needs help. Fortunately, she and her staff are doing their part at her practice, Integrative Counseling Services, with four locations in Pennsylvania.
Meet my guest this week, Alyse Kerr, MS, NCC, NADD-CC, LPC. In addition to Integrative Counseling, she is also the founder of Integrative Mind and Body Services, an organization founded to make neuro feedback and bio
feedback accessible to a larger segment of the population.
Tune in to learn what neuro feedback is and how it and bio
feedback can help people with a variety of issues from anxiety to addiction to healing after surgery.

Chatting with Maestra Director Maggie Contreras
A few weeks ago I spoke with the delightful Melisse Brunet who conducts the NEPA Philharmonic and Lexington Philharmonic and was featured in the documentary "Maestra" that follows a handful of women who were among the final 14 participants in the international La Maestra competition in Paris for female conductors.
This week I have the pleasure of chatting with Maggie Contreras who directed this indie film. She shares what surprised her; she describes the dance of documentary making that includes observing and following subjects without interfering but knowing what sparks of light to follow and make bright.
Maggie also talks about the importance of and opportunity you have to support indie filmmakers at Bingeable.net.

Gab Talks about Evil and Her Recent Trip
With just days until my birthday, there's no one (other than my dearest Ollie) who I would want to chat with on this week's podcast besides my Pittsburgh pal Gab Bonesso.
She's a comedian, mental health advocate, professional speaker and children's performer who is getting to really like the Electric City...so much that she's headed back in September for a comedy show and to emcee Disability Pride PA's event in Pittston.
We talk about our upcoming events here in NEPA, as well as our mutual love for the show "Evil" and about a trip Gab took recently at the Jersey Shore in a Victorian home.

Leah Is Helping H.S. Students Navigate Life
When I attended high school in the late 80s I was expected to take honors courses and go to college because I was “academically smart.” Never mind the fact that I thought it would be useful to take a typing course. Sorry. Nope. That was in the business track and
I was in the honors track. No can do.
Thankfully, students have many more options today. But that doesn’t mean it’s any easier. High schoolers often feel overwhelmed about what courses to take and what to do after graduation.
Leah Leverich is working to help young people through her Decision Day podcast, a resource she says she wishes she had when she was graduating high school in 2022. Her podcast guests share their expertise on a variety of topics including career exploration, finances, resume writing and much more.
Tune in to this week’s conversation to learn why Leah chose to skip college and start working and how she is informing young people so they choose the path that’s right for them.

Melisse Is Conducting Her Dream Life
This week's guest had me feeling like a little girl. It's true I was fan-girling because I love all that is French.
While I've had a love affair with all things French for many years--long before I even visited--it was genuinely easy to love Paris native Melisse Brunet after our wonderful conversation.
She is fueled by her passion for music and her role as conductor. And she loves America, the place she has chosen to make her home. In fact, she became a citizen in February of 2024 and cannot say enough about the kindness she has experienced here.
Melisse is the director of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic as well as the Lexington Philharmonic. She is also featured in the documentary Maestra that was executive produced by David Letterman.
J'espère que vous apprécierez cette conversation autant que moi. Ecoutez!

Michele Polito Is Living the Sweet Life
When you think of FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology), you might envision a runway and have the words "Make it work" echoing in your ears--- words often spoken by Tim Gunn to contestants on the fashion competition reality show "Project Runway." But it's important that we think beyond clothing when it comes to fashion.
My guest this week, Michele Polito, has shifted my thoughts and helped me understand how stylish and fashionable chocolate can be. Michele is the founder/creator of Electric City Sweets and has many years of experience working in the candy and retail fashion industry in various locations, including New York City, Florida and the Middle East.

I kick off August with a rich conversation about sustainable art with AFA Gallery Director Theresa O'Connor which means using less, wasting less, saving money, reinventing trash into treasure, being kind to the Earth.
Theresa is not only the director of a gallery but an artist herself who is putting into practice art that uses less but also helps to heal her mental health--a common practice for many these days.
Theresa and I are collaborating on an upcoming "Create Day" in Scranton on August 10. We'll create from what we cleaned up from the city streets. Try it where you live!
And be sure to check out Theresa's art exhibit in September at Northern Light Cafe in downtown Scranton across from the Courthouse.

Just Jeannine July- Highlights from the Week
Summer rolls on. The Heat continues to be like a movie villain for me. But I push onward.
There's just one week left of "Just Jeannine" mini-sodes (I know, I know, there's nothing mini about them, like my wine glasses) and then I return to my usual format of having fabulous femme guests. I look forward to sharing my latest conversations with you in August.
This week I share a recent ah-ha moment about my oversharing, recap my experience at a recent comedy competition, rate some Lehigh Valley wineries, and talk about the start of my bio feedback.

Just Jeannine July - My Patriotism
With summer now in full swing, I hope you're enjoying time outdoors or if you prefer, time inside with the AC comfortable cranking, doing your favorite activities with your favorite people.
As for me, I am enjoying the beautiful weather to kayak, bike (short distances), watch the birds at the feeder and vigorously chase the squirrels off of said feeder. I am continuing to record full podcasts with guests that I will save for August and beyond so I can get a bit ahead of things.
The month of July will feature mini-sodes of my musings on various topics. This week I share my thoughts on patriotism--something that I believe is about much more than waving a flag.
I hope you have (or had) a safe and fun 4th of July holiday with just the right amount of explosions.
Be sure to follow Funny Wine Girl Jeannine on Instagram and Facebook for my musings, nature photos, random funnies and updates on my sewing lessons.
