Episode 52 - City on Fire

Over the course of our wild conversation you will hear us talk about the rogue Hong Kong filmmaking pilosophy, the many points of symmetry between Lam and Tarantino, the haphazardly innocent direction of Lam's giving the movie a homemade feel, Chow Yun-fat's unsung charisma, the characteristic tonal inconsistencies giving City on Fire its unique character and much more. Also, if you like this show, be sure to head to our brand new Patreon (patreon.com/uncutgemspod) to listen to a the inaugural episode of Uncut Gems Retrospectives where we continue our celebration of the 30th birthday of Reservoir Dogs by talking about three movies from the second wave of the 90s Indie Revolution: Go, The Boondock Saints and The Way of the Gun. Episode 51 - Sorcerer
In this episode of the show, we are transported into the 1970s to discuss one of the most underrated masterpieces of its era, William Friedkin's Sorcerer. Joined by a special guest Sarah Buddery who also happens to be the world's foremost Roy Scheider fan, we embark on a journey to talk about the perils of carrying dynamite through a jungle and battling fate both within the narrative and outside it. Over the course of our wild conversation you will hear us talk about how much of a miracle it was for this film to come together, how it was bizarrely disregarded at the time of its release, how it functions as a multi-layered nesting doll of allegorical interpretations, how it substitutes the Hitchcockian slant of The Wages of Fear with suspense conjured by Friedkin's docu-style verite filmmaking, and much, much more! Also, if you like this show, be sure to head to our brand new Patreon (patreon.com/uncutgemspod) to listen to a tie-in bonus show where we also talked about Henri-Georges Clouzot's The Wages of Fear in detail. Episode 50 - Angel Heart
In this episode of the show, we are drenching ourselves in the combination of a sticky atmosphere of the Deep South, the gloom of the occult and unsavoury amounts of chicken blood as we talk about Alan Parker's Angel Heart. Over the course of our crazy conversation you will hear us talk about Alan Parker's approach to adapting a novel, Mickey Rourke as the star of the 80s, the dreadfully subliminal horror of this movie, a possibility that a good chunk of the story doesn't even take place in reality, Robert De Niro's turn as a mysteriously long-haired and long-fingernailed Louis Cyphre and... the many ways one could peel a hard-boiled egg.  Tune in and enjoy! Over the course of our discussion you'll hear us nit-pick the logic of this movie, talk about the disappearance of the movie star phenomenon, discuss Arnold's turn as a thematic epilogue to an entire era of the action hero supremacy, mention a few things about inspirations driving the filmmakers and, naturally, you will hear us put on our best Arnie impressions as well. Episode 47 - Matrix Reloaded and Matrix Revolutions
In this episode of the show, we finally become one with the source and finish our Circling The Matrix marathon by talking about the two movies that followed the iconic The Matrix, namely Matrix Reloaded and Matrix Revolutions. As we battled over our respective stances towards these two very unique features, we did not leave a stone unturned. We gushed over the Wachowskis' vision and scope for action set pieces, the multitude of philosophical references found in the movies, their alleged self-indulgence, cultural footprint and much, much more. Episode 46 - Speed Racer
In this episode of the show, we are getting closer to The Source in our Circling The Matrix marathon as we train our sights on The Wachowskis' follow-up to The Matrix trilogy, their 2008 adaptation of Speed Racer. Over the course of our typically long and sprawling discussion (which may or may not have become heated at a few places), we talk about the legacy of this movie, wonder if it is actually suitable for children or if it is an infantile movie for a specific sub-strata of adults, gush over its unique aesthetics and ponder some fundamental questions relating to the place of The Wachowskis in the pantheon of filmmakers who push the boundaries of the filmmaking craft and whether the world is not yet ready to understand their importance. Episode 45 - Equilibrium
In this episode of the show, we are circling The Matrix and so we discuss Equilibrium, a movie that definitely happened thanks to the overwhelming success of The Matrix and maybe borrowed a thing or two (or twenty) from it as well. Over the course of our conversation we dig into the stew of literary inspirations lifted and repackaged to form the narrative of this film, talk about the lasting influence of The Matrix on the way fight choreography is executed in Hollywood movies, find connections to other movies hidden within the movie and pore over the possibility that Equilibrium may be smarter than it is usually given credit for.  Tune in and enjoy! Episode 44 - Johnny Mnemonic
In this episode of the show, we are discussing the 1995 cult classic Johnny Mnemonic. Over the course of our conversation we dig deep into William Gibson's source material and how it relates to what's on the screen, the film's eerie prescience which may or may not include references to the ongoing pandemic, we share a few laughs at the expense of Ice-T, Dolph Lundgren and Udo Kier and - naturally - call into question Keanu Reeves' acting range. That's all in addition to simultaneously admiring and critiquing the film's strange aesthetic and its ambition to become a cerebral blockbuster that would cement Reeves as a bona fide action star of the 90s. Episode 43 - Hackers
In this episode of the show, we are doing our level best to hack the planet together with the scruffy (or maybe somewhat futuristically over-dressed) protagonists of the 1995 cult classic Hackers. Over the course of our wild and sprawling discussion we comment on the film's production design, its overall aesthetic and the aforementioned spandex-heavy fashion, talk about the idea of visualizing the concept of hacking using completely unrealistic means, the swaths of comedy embedded within the movie, its cultural footprint and much more. We even postulate that maybe it was a bit ahead of its time in many ways and the audiences were simply not ready for it at the time... just as they were not ready to handle Matthew Lillard's insanely contagious on-screen energy! Episode 42 - Jupiter Ascending
In this episode of the show, we are diving deep into our new "Circling The Matrix" series by discussing one of the more recent outings directed by the Wachowskis, namely Jupiter Ascending. Over the course of our conversation, we attempt to figure out why this movie was received negatively upon its initial release, argue over whether its world-building and exposition-heavy writing is an acquired taste or if it is a fundamental detriment to the enjoyment of the movie, comment upon the film's attempt to mesh classical fairy tales with the language of space opera and - among many other things - we spare no expense critiquing Eddie Redmayne's god-awful performance as the story's foremost villain with a hoarse throat.  Tune in and enjoy! In this episode of the show, we are moving on from the spooky season vibes and slowly begin are new episode series casually titled "Circling The Matrix" where - in anticipation of Matrix Resurrections hitting the cinemas this Christmas - we will devote a handful of episodes to movies one way or another connected to The Matrix. Thus, we gently dipping our toes in the world of hackers by discussing Michael Mann's Blackhat, a 2015 thriller that aimed to ensnare the audiences with Mann's signature tactile realism used to bring the threat of cyber-terrorism to the big screens. Over the course of our lengthy discussion among other things we are trying to understand why this movie failed at the box office, identify its many conceptual flaws, discuss whether Mann's subsequent director's cut addressed any of those shortcomings, argue over casting choices and suggest that maybe hacking is just too difficult to faithfully depict on the screen without sacrificing something in return.  Tune in and enjoy! Episode 40 - Rob Zombie's Halloween and Halloween 2
In this episode of the show, to somehow mark the 31st of October, we take aim at Rob Zombie's Halloween and Halloween 2, most likely two of the most controversial entries in the long-running Halloween film franchise. As we sank our teeth into these movies, which in and of themselves are unsettling to watch, we came to a realization that the conversation surrounding these movies ain't easy either. Therefore, we ended up talking not only about whether it is appropriate to humanize Michael Myers and focus the movie around him as though he was the protagonist, but we also came to question Rob Zombie's directorial style as a whole, the place of exploitation cinema in the current zeitgeist, Zombie's gratuitous use of onscreen violence and more. We also spent quite a while taking apart Zombie's 2009 sequel, its relationship to the series at large, the potent social commentary found beneath the narrative and a whole manner of other things as well. Be warned, the conversation in this episode contains commentary about violence and sexual violence found in the discussed films, which some listeners may find upsetting. In this episode of the show we are revisiting one of the most overlooked movies written and directed by John Carpenter, namely Prince of Darkness. Over the course of our discussion we gush over the craftsmanship of the film, its inventiveness, the overall mood and tone that sets it apart from not only movies of its time but even cinema as a whole and - naturally - delve deep into the thematics underpinning the movie, which is the grinding interface between science and religion. We might also, with our tongues pressed into our cheeks, postulate that Prince of Darkness and Christopher Nolan's Tenet might have more in common than meets the eye.  Tune in and enjoy! In this episode of the show we are discussing Ridley Scott's A Good Year, arguably a standout feature in the illustrious catalogue of this iconic filmmaker... but not necessarily in the conventional way. Over the course of our conversation we argue profusely whether this film is successful in what it is attempting to do. In fact, we also try to figure out what it is that it's attempting to do in the first place. We try to figure out if Ridley Scott's kinetic style lends itself to the type of storytelling this movie called for, marvel over the film's organic charm, its cultural self-awareness, and even attempt to identify who would be cast in the lead role if this movie was made today. Episode 22 - Vanishing Point
In this episode of the show we are travelling all the way back to the 70s to discuss Richard C. Sarafian's Vanishing Point, a counterculture cult classic about a man barrelling down the road at breakneck speeds in an iconic white Dodge Challenger. Over the course of our conversation we touch on the unique qualities of the film's main character played by Barry Newman, obsess over the film's vibes and its music and cut into the social commentary running beneath its narrative. And of course, we do end up sliding into a tangent where we try to list the most iconic movie cars in history. Tune in and enjoy! Episode 21 - The Cannonball Run
In this episode of the show we get into our fancy sports cars and race across America together with Burt Reynolds and his friends as we are discussing Hal Needham's 1981 romp The Cannonball Run. Over the course of our discussion we try to figure out whether the movie is about a race or not, we interrogate the quality of its comedy and identify its problems, all in addition to hatching a plan to take part in the modern equivalent of The Cannonball Run - Gumball 3000! Never mind the $100k entry fee, we are determined to do it. We only need a car, a rope, a parachute, some glue, roller skates and of course an alibi. Also, you will be able to hear another one of Ewan's personal confessions and find out what happened to him when his uncle allowed him to steer a lifeboat.  Tune in and enjoy! Episode 20 - Runaway Train and Unstoppable
In this episode of the show we are taking the train to Actionville as we are talking about not one but two train-centered action thrillers, Andrey Konchalovsky's Runaway Train and Tony Scott's Unstoppable. Over the course of this conversation we try to identify the layers of social commentary embedded under the edifice of genre schlock in Runaway Train, actively seek out the vestiges of Akira Kurosawa's involvement and scratch our heads as to why Eric Roberts and Jon Voight have such strange chemistry together. We also pit it against the chemistry shared by Denzel Washington and Chris Pine, deconstruct Tony Scott's characteristic visual aesthetic and discuss Unstoppable as an out-of-time blockbuster that survived well into the era of comic book movies. And of course, we slobber profusely over the magnificent stunts and physical set pieces both films are filled to the brim with. And we are having the time of our life while doing so! Episode 19 - 1941
In this episode of the show we are looking back at 1941, Steven Spielberg's WWII spoof that followed off the heels of Jaws and Close Encounters of the Third Kind and became one of the biggest disappointments in the director's filmmaking career. Over the course of the discussion we attempt to interrogate the reasons why this film was so poorly received, figure out if it is a satire, a parody, a spoof, or something completely different, take a few jabs at Spielberg's expense and maybe even pontificate over a possibility that 1941 could have worked if it was made by someone more suited to the material.  Tune in and enjoy! Episode 18 - mother!
In this episode of the show we continue revisiting Darren Aronofsky's cinema as we dig into his latest opus mother! Supremely controversial upon its release and eventually tragically unsuccessful, this film was powerful enough a catalyst for the gang to argue over its merits for nearly five hours! Over the course of this gargantuan discussion we left no stone unturned as we examined the film's intended meaning, a multitude of meanings Aronofsky did not knew were there in the first place, the film's troubled life span, its controversial imagery, whether it would have fared better if it was released today and much, much more! So, set aside a bit more time this week and join our odyssey of biblical allegories, unsettling symbols and chaotic nightmares! Tune in and enjoy! In this episode of the show we discuss The Fountain, Darren Aronofsky's follow-up to his immensely successful breakthrough hit Requiem For a Dream, which for some reason (and we get into the possible reasons why) ended up swept under the rug of history. We dig into the film's rich thematic headspace, appreciate its filmmaking craft, identify potential strands connecting the film to its creator and his larger body of work and even argue over whether it is a bona fide masterpiece or an over-confident ego trip.  Tune in and enjoy! Episode 16 - Miami Vice
In this episode of the show we venture back to 2006 and re-appraise Michael Mann's Miami Vice. Over the course of this long-winded and nuance-rich discussion we break down Michael Mann's directorial style, opine over his influence on cinema, share our own memories connected to the filmmaker and - most importantly - take a critical look at the film itself. We ponder over its multiple production issues, on-set animosities and other adversities that undoubtedly influenced the shape of the film, we discuss Mann's shift towards digital filmmaking and wonder if it amplifies or detracts from his characteristically immediate filmmaking flavour. In this episode of the show we talk about the most maligned and unfortunate entry in the Star Wars franchise, Solo - A Star Wars Story. Over the course of this epic discussion we talk at length about the troubled history of this film and its multiple flaws, though at least some of us try to make a positive case for it anyway. In this episode of the show we embark on an epic adventure leading us all the way back to the 1980s when the genre of fantasy was making a rapid resurgence and discuss Krull. We talk about how this film came to be, what possibly inspired it and - most importantly - try to understand why it became a spectacular box office bomb. We obsess over its lush production design, ridicule its ludicrous plotting and messy storytelling, and sing praises for James Horner's epic score adorning the film. Episode 13 - Alien 3 and Pitch Black
In this episode of the show we are (prematurely) celebrating Alien Day by talking about David Fincher’s directorial debut, Alien 3. We leave no stone unturned as we delve into the intricacies of the film’s production, controversies surrounding the evolution of Ellen Ripley’s character, as well as the way the 2003 Assembly Cut attempted to rectify some of its flaws. As an added bonus, we also talk about David Twohy’s Pitch Black, a low budget science-fiction movie that perhaps owes more to the Alien series than one could care to admit; however, some of us may see this claim as slightly provocative! In this episode of the show we are taking a deep dive into the world of swashbuckling adventure, corny romance, ancient curses, revived corpses and sand (lots of sand) as we are discussing The Mummy and The Mummy Returns, with a side order of adding our few cents about The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor and even a few words on The Scorpion King. We marvel over the chemistry Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz shared on the screen, identify the multitude of Spielbergian references peppered throughout the series, take a few swipes at the way the franchise developed and maybe offer a handful of comments about the way these films aged over time, while stating firmly that at least some of us are capable of seeing through any and all of their flaws thanks to the wonders of childhood nostalgia.  Tune in and enjoy! Episode 11 - Bringing Out The Dead
In this episode of the show we are indulging in a truly deep dive into Bringing Out The Dead, an underseen and underrated effort from Martin Scorsese, written by Paul Schrader and starring Nicolas Cage. Over the course of this rather long and twisty conversation we attempt to unpack the thematic richness hidden within this film which includes (among others) seeing it as a spiritual successor to Taxi Driver and a precursor to First Reformed, a deeply personal statement from Scorsese himself, a love letter to NY paramedics, a heap of biblical metaphors and much, much more. So join in for the cutting film talk and stay for the ancillary confessions and completely unsolicited tangential conversations that give this podcast its uniquely insane energy! Tune in and enjoy! Episode 10 - Congo
In this episode of the show we having an absolute ball discussing Frank Marshall's 1995 adventure romp, Congo. Over the course of the discussion, which got heated and eventually went completely off the rails, we tried to get to the bottom of whether this film is great, abysmal or so-bad-it's-awesome. We also pontificated over just how much high calibre talent was found behind the scenes, shared a few laughs at the expense of the film's exquisitely campy writing and (at least some of us) wondered if Amy was a real gorilla after all. So, as you may imagine, the conversation may have turned out just as bizarre and unhinged as the film itself! Tune in and enjoy! In this episode of the show we are taking a look at Mark Romanek's Never Let Me Go, an adaptation of a Kazuo Ishiguro novel penned by none other than Alex Garland. Over the course of our discussion we ponder how easy it is for this film to hide its science-fiction high concept backbone, ruminate over the film's multitude of interpretations, hail its great performances and even attempt to view it as a cinematic expression of veganism. Most of all, we scratch our heads as to why Never Let Me Go did not persist in the cultural consciousness for more than a minute despite the fact it would likely be a Film Twitter darling if it was released today. Episode 08 - Lonely Are The Brave
In this episode of the show we are discussing a mostly orphaned western from 1962, Lonely Are the Brave directed by David Miller and starring Kirk Douglas, Gena Rowlands, and Walter Matthau. We are trying to figure out if this film can still be classified as a western despite its modern setting, discuss the impact it had on movies that came after it and see if it can be read as an early tell-tale sign of the Golden Age of Hollywood coming to an end. In addition, we do manage to weave the theme of the currently ongoing pandemic into the conversation, which may or may not add an interesting wrinkle to Carson's difficult relationship with westerns.
